Being most improved isn't enough for Tannehill

In the aftermath of the draft and amid the preparation for the Dolphins rookie camp, I overlooked the words of Miami offensive coordinator Mike Sherman about second-year quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

"This young man will be the most improved quarterback in the National Football League from year one to year two this year – I promise you that,” Sherman told the team's website. "He’s working extremely hard."

At first blush, this seems like a bold statement. After all, it seems to suggest Tannehill will be better this year than Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, Russell Wilson and others. Right? It sounds optimistic and promising and confident.

But think about it.

Sherman didn't, in fact, say Tannehill will be the best among the 2012 QB class this season. He said he'd be most improved.

That's a completely different statement and, frankly, kind of an empty statement when you consider the facts.

What are those facts?

Of all the quarterbacks drafted in 2012 who became starters for their teams, Tannehill brought up the back of the pack along with Cleveland's Brandon Weeden.

Griffin III, Wilson, and Luck were not just better but way better. Even Nick Foles, who started games after Mike Vick went down in Philadelphia, had a better TD-INT ratio, better completion percentage and better quarterback rating than Tannehill.

So, if he was at the back of the pack among the 2012 class, it stands to reason that if he's going to be any good in 2013 he would improve the most. It's logical. Indeed, Tannehill could be the most improved and still be quite mediocre.

Seeing the jump from 12 TDs and 13 INTs to 18 TDs and 10 INTs is a huge improvement. But is it a great season? That's Christian Ponder territory.

Meanwhile, if any of the other QBs get much better that would put them in superhuman territory.

Yes, RG3 might get better. But is he going to throw 30 TDs and 5 interceptions instead of the 20 and 5 he threw last year? How much higher can he take his 102 QB rating? Is he going to complete more than the 65.6 percent of the passes he did last year?

Yes, Wilson might get better. But his 26 TDs and 10 INTs, his 100 QB rating and 64.1 percent completion rate were jaw dropping for a rookie. Is he going to be light years better coming off a season when he was already among the league's best?

Luck's numbers weren't nearly as impressive as Wilson's or RG3's. He threw 23 TDs and 18 INTS and completed only 54.1 percent of his passes. But he threw for a whopping 4,374 yards and led seven fourth-quarter comeback victories.

Is he going to lead 10 fourth-quarter comeback victories this season?

Sorry, Sherman's statement is kind of empty.

What I truly hope Tannehill does, other than improve, is climb past a couple of his contemporaries. Sherman should be looking for the kind of improvement that leaves us all saying, Tannehill was better than RG3 or Luck or Wilson.

Or better still ...

Luck took the Colts from the worst record in the NFL to an 11-5 record and the playoffs.

RG3 took the Redskins from a 5-11 record and last place in the NFC East to a division title and the playoffs.

Wilson took the Seattle Seahawks from a 7-9 record in the NFC West to an 11-5 record and the playoffs.

The Dolphins have spent over $178 million in new contracts this year to improve the team. Half of that is guaranteed money. The idea was to put enough talent around Tannehill to make him a better QB.

It would be great if he could match the seasons his three contemporaries had last year -- taking a losing team to the playoffs.

Now, that would be a feat.

I do have to give DASHI great credit for one thing.

Next to the driver himself, Dashi was easily head of his class on the "short yellow" school bus.

Damn that driver, if Dashi could only learn to drive!

Dashi,

Does the city send the "special public bus" to take you shopping?

3-13 for this expansion team....in year 6 of Irescum.

Dashi was the only student on short yellow bus that wasn't mandated to wear helmet. But he was required to wear a bib.

Scotty,

Please beam yourself into the NY Jets camp.

Hi Dashi!

Agree with DC and Dashi here.

All we care about is winning, I don't care where Tanny ends up in individual rankings.

Dashi, The comments about Marino are plain ignorant on this blog at times. It is a team game.

DC, I Know You Are Knocking Marino.

If Free Agency Was As Big Then As It Is Now. Marino Would've Either Had A Team Built Around Him Or He Would Be On Another Team Trying To Win A Superbowl.

Remember Marino Almost Went To Minnesota Before He Retired. But Retiring A Dolphin Meant Something To Him.

The truth hurts I know but you cant expect much with these clowns running the Miami circus....

Wallace and Keller.

Replaced Bess And Fasano.

L. Miller Replaced R. Bush.

Joe You Are Right I Should've Compared Wrs To Wrs And RBs To RB.

dashi,

writeS MOSTLY lies and STORIES WHICH DOESN'T MOUNT TO NOTHING LIKE THE POST@12;40 PM ABOUT MARINO....

Armando, Armando, Armando. :smh:

Let me make sure I got this right -
you built a whole column around ressurecting a quote that wasn't important enough to mention initially and you mention it now only to point out that it is empty, meaningless and, quite frankly, not worth mentioning?

Okay....

Seems most folks in here are guilty of the same shenanigans Dashi gets accused of.... double standards - engaged...didn't realize there were that many women in here...

Mando and I agree:

The weak link on this team is not the 2 rookie CBs, drafted after the top 5 CBs were already off the board, who will be starting this season.

The weak link on this team is not an OL that is bookended by J Martin and Tyson Columbo.

The weak link on this team is not the RBs led by D. Thomas and backed up by Gillislee and Miller in that order.

The weak link on this team is not the LBs where a guy like Koa Misi can be leap frogged on the deptch chart by a scrub named Hinds.

No siree.

The weak link on this team is the guy that got Mike Sherman fired at Texas A&M:

Ryan Tannehill

FF!!

Man oh man, is THIS the debate now? Sherman says 'he'll be most improved' and Armando and others are saying that's 'empty'. Jesus, man....what is it people are expecting? Jordan to be a star right out of the gate? Tannehill to be better than Luck, Wilson and RGIII? It's NONSENSE. Knock yourself out guys!! And then we'll wonder why you're complaining mid-season. Your expectations aren't realistic. Not even close. Listen I want to be a millionaire by the end of the year. NEWSFLASH: It's not going to happen (unless I win the lottery).

Why are we comparing Tannehill to Luck and RGIII? We were never going to be able to get either guy. So why compare? They're both better than Tannehill. Better today. Better tomorrow. Better, OK? In fact I don't think it will ever be close. A Wilson is a FREAK. 32 teams passed on this guy TWICE and some THREE times. He's a freak....the same way that Brady is a freak. I don't get the need to compare all the time. Let's compare him to Brady and Manning......why not?

If you want to look at a similar type QB take a look at Joe Flacco. He's improved ever year he's been in the league, so much so that he took his team to a Super Bowl championship last year. Would that be OK with some of the doubters? Flacco's numbers have never been great, but he's become better ever year. That's what we can wish for from Tannehill. I don't believe Tannehill will ever be Luck or RGIII. But where is it written that he has to be. I'll take a guy who can lead us to the playoff numerous times over the next 8-10 years. That's FAR better than anything we've had in Miami for a very long time.

But go ahead guys....set yourself up to be bitterly disappointed. I'll be right here laughing at you.

Tannehill was ranked this, Tannehill was ranked that.. he was ranked 19th by QBR. That is actually a fact, not a number pulled out of your collective arses...

The Dolphins drafted a QB and yes he is good. Yup he will get better, live with it...

Mando,

How about this....
Career TD's for the receivers the compared QB's were throwing too...

Hartline/Bess-18
Wayne/Hilton-85
Garcon/Moss-84
Rice/Tate-37

you kind of get the idea, no?

Disagree with Craig M @1:09.

Joe Flacco has won 9 post season games in 5 seasons. And he's won a Super Bowl.
Flacco is not only better than Marino ever was he has accomplished more than Marino, Ryan, Rivers, Romo, Stafford, Bradford, freeman, Newton and let'sot forget Jay Cutler.

In fact Flacco has more postseason wins than Aaron Rogers and Payton Manning.

Tannehill is nowhere near what Flacco is. Tannehill has not even surpassed Henne in any category.

Agree with JoseCuervo @ 1:15

Did you really just compare Flacco and Marino? That hilarious

JoseCuervo,

Last I checked bud it takes 53 men to win a Super Bowl. Next thing you'll be telling me is Trent Dilfer and Jeff Hostetler are better than Marino, right?

Flacco's had the luxury of playing on one of the best teams in the league ever since he's been there. Tannehill? He gets to start with Bess and Hartline and two top receivers. Little bit different, no?

JoseCuervo,

And please show me where I said 'Tannehill is as good as Flacco'? It's obvious English isn't your first language.

Maybe stop drinking yourself.....

Craig M,
So what.
Henne won 7 of 13 starts in 2009 throwing to Camarillo and Ginn.
Stop making excuses for Tannehill.
He's an adult and he needs to stop blaming his teamates and start to take responsibility.
He needs to start acting like a man if he wants to be treated that way.

The Comparing To Dan Marino Is To Make Sure How Ridiculous It Sounds When Some Of You Guys Want D. Jordan To Compare To Jason Taylor.

Dashi Will Be Happy With Something Similar.

T-Hill Should Improve. The Overall Talent And Depth Of The Offense Is Better.

Don't Want It To Happen. But Even If T-Hill Gets Injured This Team Should Still Manage To Move The Ball.

Even Matt Moore Could Succeed In This Offense.

What I Am Saying Is If We Want To Compare T-Hill To Any Qb In History. Or Improvement. He Has One In The Dolphin Record Book.

Marino Doubled His Production From His First Season To His Second Season.

Sherman And T-Hill Are In Possession Of All His Tapes.

If Philbin Talks To Shula. Why Can't T-Hill Talk To Marino?

You Don't Think Peyton and Elway Talk. We All Know Elway Is The One Listening In That Conversation. But That Is What Makes Elway Great. He Knows When To Give.

CommonSense,
If Flacco accomp[lished on the Phins what he's accomplished for B'more than he would've already leapfrogged Marino into 2nd most important all-time Dolphin behind Bob Griese.

CameltoeJoe,

You're right....

We should write Tannehill off, the same way the Chargers should have written Brees off, the same way the Broncos should ahve written Elway off, the same way the Giants should have written Manning off, the same way the Cowboys should have written Aikman off.

Fukking idiot!!

By the way, I read this morning that McKinnie will make close to $7 mil next year with the Ravens.

Eh.....NO THANKS. PASS!

CamelToe, problem is the Dolphins didn't have the Ravens roster....

Also Consider this...

19 Ryan Tannehill, MIA
20 Jay Cutler, CHI
RK PLAYER
21 Sam Bradford, STL
22 Andy Dalton, CIN
23 Matt Hasselbeck, TEN
24 Jake Locker, TEN
25 Joe Flacco, BAL

As for your terrible Henne arguement... And how many games did T-Hill win? oh 7 as well? Did Tannehill lead the offense or RR?

Brees, Elway, Manning & Aikman were all taken 1 or 2 overall. They all played for teams that knew how to manage a roster. They didn't go to teams that let thier first and 2nd rounders walk every season for no compensation.

Tannehill wasn't even considered to be a first rounder

CommonSense,

You're wasting your time wiyth this clown. It's some idiot troll whose just here to stir things up. Pay no attention to him.

Well Joe, I too probably could make an argument if I just made up facts as well. Tannehill was considered a first rounder, the debate was top 10. Not that it matters with the draft crapshoot, but if you want to make a point use facts not bs.

Agree with Craig @ 1:09, who cares about individual achievements ... you don't need the best QB, but you need one of the better ones.. top 15 is the meridian

Yeah, I know Craig. Just like to put down actual facts in the football blog occasionally.

What Round Did Matt Barkley Get Drafted?

The Writing Is On The Wall In The AFC East.

Brady Has 2 More Years Left And Their Roster Is In Shambles.

The Bills Took EJ Manuel And The Jets Got G. Smith.

Last Year's Draft Was The Best Qb Draft Since 83. Not This Years.

Mark, you know your college ball. What do you think of Geno Smith?

Dashi @ 1:23, because Dan would try to bang his wife ...

Don't get Armandos argument today. Methinks it's just there to rile people up through a slow time.

Looking forward to watching him backpedal if the Dolphins make the playoffs, Tannehill is in fact 'mose improved' and yet RGIII, Luck and Wilson are all still better.

Probably the same reaction as his post on Twitter the other night, during game one of Bulls/Heat: 'Does anyone honestly think the Heat aren't going to win this game'. Eh.....YEAH.

CS, I think Geno will be the besst QB from this year's draft ... but ... how good he will be???? that's subjective .. grading Qbs is more art and projection than the other positions. When grading other positions you can point at measurables and production and get a pretty good idea .. with QBs none of the measurables matter. heck, Marino and Peyton would need to stop for a burger and cigarette in the middle of a 40 yard dash.

As far as Geno goes, I think he needs to be in the right system ... coaching matters here .. and Rex Ryan is probably not the best coach for a rookie to break in with.

If I read Philbin right, he would be dissapointed if Tannehill carried this team. He did not want it last year, he doesn't want it this year.

Philbin wants Tannehill to play quarterback for a winning TEAM. No big bad heros. We will run the ball a lot. If we are good at running the ball, we will win. Same as last year. Hopefully, we will run when they are expecting pass and pass when they are expecting run, but we will run alot.

Philbin does not want heros. That is why Marshall, Bush, Smith, Long, Vonte Davis, etc, etc, are not still here.

Even that sap Flacco can win with a great team around him.

Ponder is a lower tier starter, for those wanting THill to "reach Ponder status"

I agree that he can get to middle of the road starter status this year, he's absolutely better than Henne.

I'd like to see him use his running ability a little more, when the play isn't there... make quicker decisions to take off and pick up yardage.

Then Defenses have to respect his dual ability.

You stole this entire article from other reporters(print and tv) who reported this after it was siad. really

The question of which team (Miami was one of those) would be most improved on NFL Channel a few days ago. And of course the first former NFL no-name guy goes on about the Colts who won something like 11 games(?) and in the playoffs....F'ing idiot. Did these guys learn anything in school?

The 2nd guy had enough sense to understand the question. MOST IMPROVED doesn't mean conference winner or making it to the SB...it just means most improved.

Alright, yeah Ryan is probably not good for him, but at least he won't have Sparano holding him down.

WILL T-HILL IMPROVE THIS YEAR ? HELL YEAH! THE GUY WAS NOT AS BAD A QB AS SOME MAY THINK! THE ORGANIZATION LET HIM DOWN LAST YEAR BY NOT GETTING HIM WEAPONS TO WORK WITH BECAUSE THEY WAS NOT SURE HE WOULD BE ABLE TO HANDLE THE SITUATION. HE SURPRISED THEM ALL AND BY MID SEASON THE SAME ORGANIZATION WAS SCRAMBLING TO FIND THE GUY SOME ONE TO THROW TO. BY THEN IT WAS TOO LATE. STILL HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR A OVER PAID KICKER BLOWING 2 GAMES AND A CB WHO CANNOT HOLD ON TO A INT. THIS TEAM GOES 10-6. SO THE BLAME CANNOT BE PUT ON A ROOKIE QB THROWN INTO THE FIRE. I DON'T CARE ABOUT WHAT RG3 OR THE OTHER QB DID THEY HAD MORE WEAPONS TO WORK WITH AND A RUNNING GAME TO COMPLIMENT THEM. T-HILL HAD NONE AND HAD SHERMAN AND PHILBIN PLAYED MORE TO WIN INSTEAD OF NOT TO LOSE THAM T-HILL WOULD HAVE EASILY BETTER STATS. SO LET'S FACE THE FACTS THIS OFF SEASON THE ORGANIZATION WENT OUT OF THERE WAY TO GIVE T-HILL EVERYTHING HE NEEDS TO SUCCEED. WHY? BECAUSE THEY SEE HE HAS IT TO BE A GOOD QB. RELAX FIN FANS BARRING ANY MAJOR INJURIES THIS TEAM WILL WIN 10-12 GAMES!! BET ON IT!

Truth,You state in regards to Tannehill that "if a pup don't bite, she never will"?? Tell that to HOF QB Troy Aikman whose stats where horrible in a 1-15 Dallas Cowboy rookie season. How did the rest of his career pan out...guess that dog learned to bite. You are an idiot!!

Run Ricky Run

Good Point Mark.

Dan Marino Was Brett Farve Before Farve.

Dan Marino Use To Fax Pictures Of His Pennsylvania To Women.

Bob Griese Always Sounds Like He Wants To Give Some Advice To Him.

Tannehill Needs To Move His Feet Better In The Pocket. Slide.

That And Having Someone Who Can Just Go Out And Get It(Wallace) . Is A Huge Plus.

With Keller As A TE Over Fasano. Would Be Nice To Be On The Other Side Of Keller Out Running LBs.

D . Keller Played Less Games But Averaged More YPC Than Fasano.

When Healthy D. Keller Has The Potential To Be A 1000yds Receiver.

I want to believe the Dolphins will be the most improved team. For us, division winner would silence the haters for sure maybe even wildcard.

Winning division as long as Tannehill's stats improved somewhat would probably do it.

Our schedule is tougher this year but still this team played well against just about every team they faced...

Coaching truly is the key and I feel we have the right coaches........FINALLY!

If you look only at the RBR rating for AFC QB's last year Tannehill was #6.
The only QB with a QBR lower than him: Joe Flacco

Case Closed.

Tannehill didn't have an offensive cast last year. Tom Brady would have lost with Dolphins' last year's offense.

One fact that you neglected to state is that Tannehill may not have had as many weapons to throw to as those other 1st year quarterback. Maybe if he had it would have been a different outcome.
He was also working with a makeshift OL which did not afford him the protection needed for a good passing attack.

All in all, it is very difficult to compare quarterbacks without factoring in the supporting cast.

Unless were going to hack saw off Tannehill arm and insert Luck arm, take the brain outta Tannehill head and insert Luck, we'll me mediocare, if the pup dont bite as a youngin she will never bite.

Posted by: Truth | May 09, 2013 at 11:38 AM

In their rookie seasons;

P Manning.....QBR 71.2
J Elway.......QBR 54.9
T Brady.......1 game played
A Rodgers.....0 games played
D Brees.......1 game played
B Farve.......2 games played
E Manning.....QBR 55.4
J Namath......QBR 68.7
B Griese......QBR 61.7
T Aikman......QBR 55.7
L Dawson......QBR 69.8
P Rivers......2 games played
T Romo........0 games played
R Staubach....QBR 70.2
R Tannehill...QBR 76.6

So these pups didn't bite so you would have deemed them all failures, right?

The truth is that Tannehill's rookie season was right in line with some great QB's and some not so great QB's rookie seasons. We will jut have to wait and see how he turns out.

If you look only at the RBR rating for AFC QB's last year Tannehill was #6.
