Clabo signed: Dolphins may NOT be finished

This morning the Dolphins seemed to cross the line of no return in committing to Tyson Clabo as their right tackle and Jonathan Martin as their left tackle by signing the former Atlanta Falcons player to a one-year deal.

The Herald's Barry Jackson was the first to have the story.

Financial figures are not yet available but Clabo was hoping to recover the $4.5 million he was scheduled to make with the Falcons in 2013 before he was cut as a cap casualty.

And now Miami's offensive tackle issues are fully addressed, right?

Well, maybe.

The fact remains that while the deal to acquire Branden Albert is at best on life support and probably will not happen, it is not fully, completely dead. Yes, the Dolphins have moved on with Martin as their LT. Yes, the Chiefs have gotten Albert to sign his franchise tender and have declared that Eric Fisher will play right tackle.

The clubs have both privately said this issue is over.

Have you heard of posturing?

Did you know that teams return to apparently dead trades all the time? Years ago the Saints and the Giants haggled for months about Jeremy Shockey and failed to consumate a deal by both teams' imposed draft deadline. The deal was dead -- until it wasn't and was completed in July.

So this may not be totally over and here's the reason:

The way it has been explained to me, the Dolphins needed to get over three obstacles to land Albert:

They needed to get him in for a physical and needed him to check out fine.

They needed to agree to compensation with the Chiefs.

They needed to agree with Albert on a new contract.

The Dolphins never got over the first hurdle. They weren't allowed.

This deal stalled dead on the tracks because the clubs couldn't agree on having Albert drive from his home in South Florida to the Dolphins medical team and get an MRI and do other tests to see the condition of his back. You'll remember the offensive tackle missed five starts last year with back issues.

Well, the Dolphins wanted to check that issue out prior to going forward with the trade. The Chiefs wouldn't allow it. They wanted the Dolphins to do the trade and a deal and have it all be contingent on the physical afterward.

That, I am told by a league source, is hurdle that tripped this deal.

So what if somebody changes their mind after the start of training camp? What if the Dolphins get on the field next July and suddenly feel queasy (a Joe Philbin word) about Martin at left tackle? Remember, Martin allowed more hurries than any tackle in the NFL in 2012, according to ProFootballFocus.com.

What if that great leap in ability most players make from their rookie year to Year No. 2 doesn't quite hit like the Dolphins hope for Martin?

On the other hand, what if the Chiefs suddenly decide that Fisher is so good and so capable -- he was, after all, the first overall selection this draft -- and start to believe putting him at left tackle will be better for his career and the team longterm?

The door might re-open from either side.

Maybe the Chiefs relent on the physical because they see Albert as healthy. Maybe the Dolphins relent on the physical because of need.

Then there is this: The Dolphins could use another left tackle. No doubt about that. Martin today is the starter. But what happens if he's injured? The fact is the Dolphins are a better team with Albert as the starting and proven left tackle and Martin and Clabo fighting on the right side for the starting job. And if Albert goes down, then Martin can swing over and start there while Clabo starts are right tackle.

As it stands now, if Martin goes down, the Dolphins don't have a starting left tackle and there's no easy solution for replacing him.

The Dolphins could still use Branden Albert.

It was the beginning of the end when Ross bought the team.

No matter the owner, the renovation issue would have eventually come up. It's all politics, concessions are eventually made. This only means the right "hands have not yet been greased".

That's how politics have always worked. That's how politics always will work.

Obviously winning is not a requirement for a Ross GM.

YG

Maybe you should just make believe they already moved the team out of state.

Very great point. That's how I view your mother, works great!

Jonathan Martin like any NFL player can be injured on any given play but his injury History suggest he's a durable Football player and one with the ability to ascend. I for one would like to see if he ups his game and comes in ready to compete in 2013 to find out what we have in the former Lombardi finalist, 1st team Walter Camp and Coaches association All-American who at 6'6"/305 Pds has the physical gifts if committed to be a solid LT in the NFL.

He was thrown in as a Fr. in 09 garnering honorable mention as All-PAC-10 player at LT which he followed up gaining All American honors as a Soph. before a host of other accolades from there on before declaring after Jr. Yr.. Went to to the combine with alot of hype given he protected Luck's blindside at Stanford before his 20 reps on the 225 bench had teams questioning his strength (with good reason most OL post 30 or over) His atribute is his natural ability and mental mack up, after all he could have been only one of a handful of Harvard students in History to become scholar athletes at Stanford.

I read were in order to better his strength conditioning he spent this Off-Season pulling Tractor trailers in Cali. If this translates could become a great combination of smarts/athletics for us on the Leftside. This is the type of individual that could have done anything with his life and scholastically has which tells me he loves the game and has the passion and smarts to work at his craft. In other words the type of individual I can take a gamble on just MHO!

Hey YG, Martin is a good gamble from were I sit for the following:

Hey YG I take the gamble on Martin for a variety of reasons!

You know you are talking to an adolescent mind when they think a joke or comment about your mother is funny or clever.

It's just plain boring to those who have already grown up.

YG.......

YOU SHOULD GIVE LOL HIS APOLOGY ........

IT'S VERY UNCALLED FOR ,TO INSULT HIM THAT WAY ..

Trolls Inc is still too much of a Pansy to use his regular name instead of his Troll name.

Trolls Inc = Pansy = Shrinking Violet

What I would say about Clabo is, he's 'serviceable'. He's not one of the top tackles in the game. He's not elite. He can get the job done. The possibility exists, and I'll say it here, that he performs at the same level as Colombo.

LMAO at you,

You tell us to give a rookie time to prove what he can do, and then tell us a guy who has already proven to be a success at this level may be no better than Colombo...

I see Clabo signed for 3.5 million with 1.5 million guaranteed. Seems like a fair price, nice move by Ireland.

you guys are a bunch of cry babies as always in Miami..... wee wee wee...
Martin has done a great job!!..... 2 sacks in 4 games against some of the best pass rushers in the league and you are still bitchin and complaining please get a life man!!! learn the sport first and then GO TALK SOME B.S. you guys are clueless as to what a good player is!!!!!! CLUELESS!!

J Watts,

For about $1.25 more you can get the non-scratchy toilet paper. It will improve your demeanor greatly.

Oh, and so your unprovoked adolescent and childish comment to me isn't a "qualifier"?

Ask and you shall receive.

Martin was last yrs second rd pk. So why cant he play left tackle? He was picked as a LT. Remember all the bur-ha-ha about Martin replacing, the oft injured Long, at LT. Can the guy play LT or cant he. Clabo was a good sign. Really thought they would sign Winston. Can Winston play LT? Can Clabo play LT?

The #5 tackle in the league sounds elite to me. I don't think that qualifies as just serviceable either. He's a great signing. How many games straight has that guy played? In this league he's almost an Ironman. I'd bet money fat Albert would have missed some games. No one would have been clamoring for a vet back up for that guy.

Let's see if we can keep on this Tackle talk until midnight. I'm loving it.

Why buy Dolphin gear if Ross is moving the team?

Shula 72

Why even continue living? Isn't life so awful?

Join me next Sunday in a FinFan mass suicide picnic.

Martin played LT last year....AND HE STUNK!!

Why even continue living? Isn't life so awful?

So kill yourself.

i can't believe philbin &ireland consider albert better than johnson. so please, mando, stop talking about albert!

It amazes me how Ireland keeps making great moves, and we still have a bunch of morons in this blog that still don't get it!!!

Mando, lets start deleting these morons!!

I'm not sure if people are for getting that Alex Smith is the Chiefs QB and that he is left handed or if I am looking at this wrong. Being Smith is left handed, wouldn't that make his blind side the right tackle position? If that is the case, which I'm pretty sure it is, wouldn't that make Fisher, the named RT, the more important part of the line? My question is, would this make KC want to pay Albert the type of money that a right tackle would make on a team with a right handed QB?

On Finsiders radio Tyson Clabo says he's already experience in "zone blocking". Was also a pro bowler in 2010.

The number "77" returns to Miami, and it isn't Jake.

Yes! That's the guy I was hoping we would sign out of the OL'men brought in. Martin will be just fine at LT. He took his lumps last year. I think this whole off season has played out very well. On another note, I am 39 yrs old, I have pictures of me decked out in dolphins gear in 1976, I was 2. This year, I will be taking my two boys(7 & 5) to their first dolphins game. Win, lose or draw, phins forever baby!!!

Bleacher Report has an article about signing Clabo being the final piece in an amazing off season. Even if Martin is "serviceable" at LT.

It's a shame Bleacher Report is rarely right about anything.

huge getting clabo, hate the fact that martin is our lt but clabo very good. and no more garbage discussion about awful winston or mckinnie

Right or wrong, other avenues than just Dolphin homers are seeing a positive change in our lineup Ollie.

It is obvious that Ireland does not want to give a long term contract to older or hurt FAs this year.

Does this mean J Martin is a bust?

Probably

pez smith is right handed

The 4 teams that made it to the NFC and AFC championship last year all had first round draft picks at LT. Not that it's a requirement, but it does show that they invested in the position. The Dolphins just went from overvaluing LT to low balling it.

dusty, you are up in kc, any word on how Albert's physical went?

And it's a shame youre such a pathetic loser troll ollie. Its great just knowing how bad your life sucks. Thank you for that.

all radio here in kc is chiefs now acting like they are glad they are keeping albert, but nobody is buying it

I can't believe the number of arm-chair GMs out there. Better people think you're stupid than opening your mouths and proving it to them. So many people out there with NO football backgrounds trying to convince others of their brilliance in choosing a roster. What CRAP!! Be a fan or go away. That especially applies to all you Logo haters. Are you kiddin me? It's over you morons in case you haven't noticed. I hated the old cartoonish logo but, who cares? W's and fielding a competitive team are all that matter. I've never had near the problem with anyone in the organization as I do with all you whining a__holes. Get a life!!!

Probably not

Darkoak ollie is the jets fan who hangs out in here night and day uses different names and pretends to be a fan. A real stupid pos.

DUSTY BOTTOMS:

Gypsy loves you VERY much. You are my sweet pea!

ill agree, no way u can argue this entire offseason about ireland. on paper looks like one of best ever. i loved most of it, not excited about the overpaid lbs' and would of taken eifert at 12 and kept second rd pick instead of dion, other that that i loved it

Thank you Florida. I'm so happy you won't lend the money to the Dolphins because I will be taking it from you as soon as Weatherford is elected. Dont worry we have your best interests at heart so I will use the blackmail money to build you more car dealerships.

Ross changed the logo just to extract more money from fans on Dolphin gear. Hasnt he ripped the fans off enough with his crap on the field product?

ross cant force u to buy new fins gear. ill wear my much better old school stuff now anyways

Braman was right about the Marlins and the Dolphins.

Dusty Bottoms:

Thank you for for making me double check that. You are right, he is right handed, but the first time I checked, Scouts .com said he was left handed. After your post, I doubled checked and fond a picture of him throwing and he is right handed. Thanks again.

Norman Braman threatened to move the Philadelphia Eagles to Phoenix unless taxpayers built him a new stadium.

You follow that hypocritical fraud all you want. I know better.

Mando, you seem to love writing intrigues. You are like the TV series 24: never ending. Just because you were sleeping all Sunday morning and was LAST to report the Clabo signing, you now want to introduce the Albert trade as needed and still cooking. You all get a life and finish up all these fruitless comments doubting our OL. The OL and the backups are all set and will be a good one, whomever starts. Martin has always played LT and excelled at it in college. He will will be solid playing his second year, after a late start last year because of graduation. Clabo will become a mainstay in our OL. He was, by far, the best candidate for RT and a proven veteran that did not miss a game for 5 years. I forsee he will be resigned for a couple more years.

Let's all be honest. Ireland has done an excellent job this offseason, contrary to what we all expected. Give the man credit. He deserves it. Now is Philbin's job to have all these new people working good as a team and with chemistry. The ball is in Philbin's hand now and I am sure he knows how to run with it.

GO PHINS.

To hell with the car dealerships, put more pain management clinics up.

Ross and his republicans need to stop their assault on the middle class.

I think Michelle Obama would make a better GM than Jeff Irish.

In a brilliant FA and Draft Ireland has filled EVERY holes AND given us a group pf talented young athletes as backups. Consistent with the CBA he has dumped expensive mid-range vets and replaced them with cheaper young players with more upside - and used the money freed up to bring in great playmakers. All in all this is the most talented Dolphins team in 15 years, a team whose talent will naturally improve as our young players benefit from coaching and experience.

The situation is fundamentally changed. No longer is talent our rate-limiting step. At the is point the rate-limiting step is whether Philbin, Sherman and Coyle can to two things: (1) devise an offense and defense that takes full advantage of the speed and versatility of our personnel to present a bewildering array of fronts and stunts to make life Hell for opposing coordinators and (2) can they coach our young team to understand that playbook, learn it to the point where they can automatically and effectively execute it and work together as a coherent team. If they can pull this off, even with our much tougher schedule we will be 10-6 and in the playoffs with our fate in our hands.

Looking good. Go Phins!

dusty bottoms,

I really don't consider the fa lb's overpaid. Especially when considering how much more the cost was to keep Dansby and _____. Plus we got faster, younger and more athletic, while increasing play making ability.

In a year or two, if we don't feel like we're getting our money's worth, there can always be another redo again. So relax.

i am relaxed. said i loved the offseason, those were just the moves i disagreed on

YG,

What is with your obsession with telling people to relax or not overly worry.

People are just blogging. You are the one that should relax and not be overly worried.

I think Michelle Obama would make a better GM than Jeff Irish.

Posted by: Fin 88 | May 05, 2013 at 06:57 PM

Heck, she couldnt be any worse!

If Ellerbe and Wheeler are overpaid, then rhere hasn't been a financial term invented yet for was Dansby and Burnett were.

Ellebe is a 2.4 million 2013 cap hit, so is Wheeler. That's a combined 4.8 million 2013 cap hit.

Dansby alone was going to be a 2013 11.3 million cap hit.

exactly yesterday, those guys sucked and were way overpaid and came in here much more proven. again im not excited about the lbs. but team overall, go fins!
