Clabo signed: Dolphins may NOT be finished

This morning the Dolphins seemed to cross the line of no return in committing to Tyson Clabo as their right tackle and Jonathan Martin as their left tackle by signing the former Atlanta Falcons player to a one-year deal.

The Herald's Barry Jackson was the first to have the story.

Financial figures are not yet available but Clabo was hoping to recover the $4.5 million he was scheduled to make with the Falcons in 2013 before he was cut as a cap casualty.

And now Miami's offensive tackle issues are fully addressed, right?

Well, maybe.

The fact remains that while the deal to acquire Branden Albert is at best on life support and probably will not happen, it is not fully, completely dead. Yes, the Dolphins have moved on with Martin as their LT. Yes, the Chiefs have gotten Albert to sign his franchise tender and have declared that Eric Fisher will play right tackle.

The clubs have both privately said this issue is over.

Have you heard of posturing?

Did you know that teams return to apparently dead trades all the time? Years ago the Saints and the Giants haggled for months about Jeremy Shockey and failed to consumate a deal by both teams' imposed draft deadline. The deal was dead -- until it wasn't and was completed in July.

So this may not be totally over and here's the reason:

The way it has been explained to me, the Dolphins needed to get over three obstacles to land Albert:

They needed to get him in for a physical and needed him to check out fine.

They needed to agree to compensation with the Chiefs.

They needed to agree with Albert on a new contract.

The Dolphins never got over the first hurdle. They weren't allowed.

This deal stalled dead on the tracks because the clubs couldn't agree on having Albert drive from his home in South Florida to the Dolphins medical team and get an MRI and do other tests to see the condition of his back. You'll remember the offensive tackle missed five starts last year with back issues.

Well, the Dolphins wanted to check that issue out prior to going forward with the trade. The Chiefs wouldn't allow it. They wanted the Dolphins to do the trade and a deal and have it all be contingent on the physical afterward.

That, I am told by a league source, is hurdle that tripped this deal.

So what if somebody changes their mind after the start of training camp? What if the Dolphins get on the field next July and suddenly feel queasy (a Joe Philbin word) about Martin at left tackle? Remember, Martin allowed more hurries than any tackle in the NFL in 2012, according to ProFootballFocus.com.

What if that great leap in ability most players make from their rookie year to Year No. 2 doesn't quite hit like the Dolphins hope for Martin?

On the other hand, what if the Chiefs suddenly decide that Fisher is so good and so capable -- he was, after all, the first overall selection this draft -- and start to believe putting him at left tackle will be better for his career and the team longterm?

The door might re-open from either side.

Maybe the Chiefs relent on the physical because they see Albert as healthy. Maybe the Dolphins relent on the physical because of need.

Then there is this: The Dolphins could use another left tackle. No doubt about that. Martin today is the starter. But what happens if he's injured? The fact is the Dolphins are a better team with Albert as the starting and proven left tackle and Martin and Clabo fighting on the right side for the starting job. And if Albert goes down, then Martin can swing over and start there while Clabo starts are right tackle.

As it stands now, if Martin goes down, the Dolphins don't have a starting left tackle and there's no easy solution for replacing him.

The Dolphins could still use Branden Albert.

The Signal, did you do any homework on Clabo or just shoot from the hip. Pro Football Focus the bible for rank NFL players, rank Clabo as the 5th best RT in the league last year. That may not be elite and your book. but it sounds like he's a pretty good tackle. BTW he was a pro bowler in 2010, so maybe not elite, but pretty good.

clabo very solid rt. pro bowl in 2010 i could care less about. your wife was prob 30 lbs lighter in 2010. but love the clabo deal

Fin 88, what, you just didn't say that. Did you notice the first phase of free agency, the draft, and second phase of free agency that Ireland has had. You really don't know much do you.

dusty bottoms,

Hopefully we get to see how well all of the "moving pieces" fit together "as a whole".

Many times greatness can not be defined as a whole, many times greatness can also be defined as the sum of all its moving parts.

Dave K. ditto for you on my post to to fins 88

dusty bottoms how about Pro Football Focus do you like that/

dusty bottoms,

=========================================

Ooh La La!

Dusty bottom,

Take for example the great early 70's Dolphin defense. It was very difficult to define its greatness in 1, 2, or even 3 players.

This defense was they very definition of "sum of its moving parts" defining greatness.

Aramando just put an article out to cause intrigue and stir conversation. The signing of Clabo killed any chance of bringing in Albert unless there is a season ending injury prior to the start of the season. The fins drafted Martin early in the 2nd round last year, I would think that Ireland is going to play it out this year before he declares him bust. Why would you put the ninth pick in the second roud on the bench behind Albert and Clabo.

The fins are going to roll the dice with Martin and Clabo at the OTs. The backups are going to be Garner, Yeatman, and Thomas. Martin actally showed better signs as a LT last year than RT. He filled in well for Long and should improve this year. Reports are he has really worked had and he is an extremely intelligent player (from Stanford).

This looks likes the right player at the right time. Beleive in Martin. He might not be Jake Long, but really in an era of caps you cant have pro-bowlers at every position. I really did not think Martin did all that bad when you factor in late to camp, spent all time learning RT, and then was thrown into LT when Jake went down.

To me it looks like Martin is the up and comer. Clabo fixes the other side, and that is the side Tanhill likes to jump early to so I think Clabo and Keller probably create Tanhills security blanket now our QB is going to have to learn how to be patient enough to get the ball to Wallace.

My next move would be to sign Freeney or Abraham to teach our young 1st round pick how to be the hybrid DE/OLB that Jason Taylor was. Maybe they should give Jason Taylor a job as tutor. You fix the pass rush and the rest of the D gets really good if not great. Especially if our D corrdinator can work his magic on the CB's like he did in Cincy.

For once we have the making of a very dominate team on D and O. My only worry is not having a proven bruiser that can pound the opposing teams D.

Good direction, to bad we will make the playoffs this year flying under the banner of this horid new logo.

Go Dolphins!!

Dusty Bottoms,

Also the early 70's defense invented the 3-4 defense with 53 Bob Matheson. The original name for the 3-4 defense was the "53 defense" originated in Miami.

Parcells just took the 53 defense, making it full time, therefore popularizing it to modern conception.

Orlando,

What happens in training camp and in preseason will truly decide if the Albert deal is dead or alive.

Until this happens, I believe it can be more appropriately looked upon as being on "Life Support".

Now that we have seen Ireland's total hand unfold. Signing a vet pass rusher this offseason would have served no other purpose but to take even more reps from a young and potentially growing pass rusher like Olivier Vernon.

Also, you wouldn't want to start him over your #3 overall pick Jordan, that would seem ludicrous.

That's why you have current guys like Wake to teach from a player's perspective, and lb/d-line coaches to do it from a coaching perspective. You aren't bringing in a vet in this case to become a player coach.

Wake has 2 or 3 more seasons with us. By then, Vernon and Dion will be in fine form.

YG is right. We already have Vernon and Odrick as RDEs, why bring another DE specially with our #3 pick? Either they are planning to move Odrick inside next year when Starks will not be here or they have plans for Dion to play without his hand on the ground.

not big on dion either way. hope im wrong and eifert doesnt explode

You remember Matt Roth, YG? In 2008, when he was playing the Sam LB, very few catches were made by the TEs. He used to bang them all over the place at the line. If Dion can learn that position, he would be great because he is truly a pass rushing danger unlike Matt was.

Of course, I remember now that when Roth played OLB, it was a 3-4. Now it's different. Dion might wind up with his hand on the ground.

Matt Roth!

heehee

It seems like we're pretty set with pass rushers at DE and LB. Think of the pass rush with Cam, Odrick, Starks, Vernon and Dion coming into blitz from the LBer position. That is going to give offenses nightmares.

Our DL is going to be sick this year. We should be able to put major pressure on the QB this year. I like what Ireland is doing there. He is tweaking and already good DL. If he strikes gold with Jordan and Vernon takes a step forward this year the fins could have one of the best defenses. Putting pressure on the QB is paramount in this pass happy era of the NFL. Our outstanding DL should cover up any deficiancies we may have in the secondary. I like Ireland's plan.

Of course, signing Clabo does not guarantee in the least that JMartin will be our LT. Only that Clabo will be our RT.

I also like what Ireland has done at the RB position. I think he found back to back nuggets at RB these past two drafts. Miller and Gillislee are going to make a great one two punch. The position is deep with Thomas and Gray backing up.

Depth at WR. TE, and OT will be a concern. Hopefully, Rishard Mathews can be a good # 4. Also, Dion Simms will have to step up as a blocking and zone catching TE. Clabo should be adequate at RT but that position will have to be upgraded next year. I have a feeling that we will all be pleasantly surprised with Martin.

Did Vernon play any LB last year? Really, Dion has the more prototypical frame for DE over Vernon.

I would be surprised if Martin is not our starting LT. He used to protect Luck's blind side and did a very good job at it. I actually think he played well at LT and struggled more at RT. That kid is going to be a good pro, he is a smart guy and looks like he will put in the work to get better. Listening to him talk, it looks like he has a good head on his shoulders.

It is deficiencies, Orlando, deficiencies. I know, I've been in this Country for a long Time.

Orlando,

D-line?

You guys are to busy trying dissect a particular unit or position, that you fail to see the entire picture of its moving parts.

Its not just d-line pressure. Its not just blitzing a lb. Its about creating havoc all over the place. Have you also noticed that the cb's brought in also have "sacks" on their resume?

With Coyle's defense it seems he's all about playing great against the run, great coverage, and wreaking havoc all over the place.

Folks, this is what causes a great turnover defense. Just like Coyle wants. Bring great confusion to the opposing offense.

The probabilities are that Martin will be our LT to start the Season, Orlando, but it's not a certainty at this moment.

I feel sorry for Tanny if Martin is his LT....

Yes, bring confusion and havoc, YG. Exactly.

Guys,

No matter how great an offense, if you place fear and doubt into the mind of its qb, literally the entire offense is dead.

If you cut of the dog's head, there great chance the tail doesn't waggle either.

Good point YG. Ellerbe is a great blitzer and the fins did bring a lot of speed to the secondary. However, it is also great to be able to put pressure with your four down lineman. Remember that if you cannot get pressure with your lineman and you have to blitz all the time a QB like Brady and Manning will make you pay but you are right they can bring pressure from everywhere.

I still think that our DL is going to be the strength of our defense.

Thanks for being my Spell Check Oscar. I usually don't proof read what I write and as you can tell I like to write more than one sentence when I post. Thus, there is more of a chance to make spelling errors with no spell check.

Thanks again! I hope that at least my thoughts and opinions are OK.

I still say if we kept Sean Smith he would have eventually gotten another interception.

YG you are absolutely right. It used to be that you would find two big guys in the middle to clog the run and that is how you built your defense. Now days, you need to put constant pressure on the QB. I am not saying that good corners are not important but with all of the rules favoring the offense there is no way CBs can stay with WRs for a prolonged period of time. Therefore, putting big pressure on the QB on every play is essential to disrupt timing and cause turnovers.

With Coyle's defense it seems he's all about playing great against the run, great coverage, and wreaking havoc all over the place.

This is nothing more than every DC's ultimate goal. It is just a question of if they can get there. Few do.

The great decision maker Stephen Ross now admits he never had any intention of putting up coin to improve Dolphin Stadium if taxpayers turned him down for funding. Great owner! Always looking at his bottom line instead of understanding a Sports Franchise ultimately belongs to the ticket buying public. Ross has $10 bucks and refuses to invest $2 back into his product or brand? He should sell our Dolphins' now!

Nahh, just playing Armando for a while here, YG. We, Paul and I, can afford to play with this as Salguero has been harmless up to now. We give you hits as we don't really want your Blog to disappear. At least for now. See how nice we are?

Hopefully, Clabo does not get Tannehill nailed. He gave up 7 sacks and 23 hurries last year according to reports.

Martin was the OT that gave up the most hurries last year according to some reports.

Goddarn!, is that true, Orlando?

Yeah, that is how he became a billionaire. You obviously don't know how to become one.

The team ultimately belongs to the owner, that is the way it works, sorry.

GREATNESS
GREATNESS......

HOVAC .......

HOVAC.......

YOU GUYS STILL THINK FOOTBALL AS STILL LIVING IN 1960'S.................

GREATNESS BY OUR GARAGE MANAGER.......................

Orlando,

What seasoned vet qb's like Brady and Manning are great at recognizing are traditional blitzes and disguise they pick up on tape. Then the know the appropriate pass protect to call for their oline that allows you to beat them.

With that said, let me say this. Defensive schemes used by teams are only as good as the personnel they have using them. You cant force square pegs into round holes.

Therefore, I love the speed, athleticism, skillsets and complimentary skill sets, plus the smarts of all of the defensive players brought in. These type players takes your defensive scheming to new levels.

And..... no, there isn't a dc in the league who becomes so predictable as to blitz x amount of times. At times you still blitz just because you don't want to give the opposing qb a steady diet of the same thing.

Also, it's extremely rare when a team gets consistent pressure with 4 down linemen. It doesn't happen very often. There was Doomdays, Steel Curtain, Purple People Eaters, and in the late 70's 80's the Colts had 4 downlinemen, that consistently did this. This is a rare thing though.

THE DOLPHINS LIVING IN THE CELLAR IN THE LAST 12 YEARS AS A RESULT OF THE WAY OUR LOYLE FANS LIKE YG,OSCAR THINK ....

WE MUST RESPECT THEIR WAY OF THINKING EVEN IF IT'S FROM THE OLD DAYS ,WHICH ISN'T WORKING NO MORE .

That's not even to mention what's in store for offenses when they do get a few seconds to throw the ball. This defense should be able to make pass happy teams pay from the secondary and LB corp. These guys are fast and can cover and hit too. It's going to be fun watching these guys bring it.

I told you guys that SOB Ross was a cheapskate. His true colors are coming out now placing blame everywhere but on himself. He is a terrible owner and will never build a winner. He wont pay for good players, a real GM, or even to fix his OWN business.

Orlamdo,

In a nut shell, Bradys and Mannings are great at exploiting defenses predictabilities. You've got to keep them thinking. You've got to keep them guessing.

Because if they have you figured out they will eat you alive.

I told you, ALoca, the Dolphins win Championships, Ross is going to have lots of our $, even to build a New Stadium(where We want, of course).

OSCAR,

WHAT HAPPENED TO THAT STADUIM ISSUE ?

AND WHY OUR ARMANDO WRITS A POST ABOUT IT ?

Hi ALoco!

O.K. I'm just a simple guy from W.N.Y.,but a life long dolphins fan.Something for you folks to think about down there. The Bills haven't put a winning product on the field in years. They needed stadium upgrades and not being in a tourist friendly area passed the cost onto the tax payers of Erie Co. & the state of New York with the Bills not paying a dime back. Plus they play 1 home game in Toranto Canada. So help me understand. Upgrades for Sun Life are 350 million.
Mr.Ross is going to pay up front 200mllion. TOURIST via (way of a 1% hotel tax)will make up the 150 million of which Mr. Ross will PAYBACK! How on God's green earth does this not make good business sense for everyone? For all you people yelling welfare. Do you knw anyone that collects welfare and if you do,do the pay it back? NO beause it's welfare. Not a dime comes out of your pockets unless you stay in a hotel and you make 150 million plus $'s I cant' imagine. Get on the phone to your local congress men and DEMAND a vote!!
