Dolphins in fine cap shape (still)

The Dolphins are doing just fine with their cap space, according to the NFL Players Association numbers below released at 8 a.m. today.

The club has over $7.4 million in cap space and if you recall that after June 1 the club picks up another $10 million in space based ont he deferred cuts of Karlos Dansby and Kevin Burnett, there will be plenty of room to sign the draft picks, add a practice squad, do any acorn shopping general manager Jeff Ireland wants to do, and still have a bit of an emergency fund for the season.

By the way, Charles Woodson is still out there. He's eager to sign with a team. Yes, he's 37 years old, but he can still play. The Dolphins, as I have reported, had moderate interest in him a couple of months ago.

He could be a solid experienced leader of a young defensive backfield for one year.

Before that happens, however, the Dolphins could easily sign their later-round draft picks like other teams are doing. What are they waiting for? It's not rocket science.

WHY DASHI TALKING BOUT MALE GENITAL?

Davrula al imbiti da Miami Dolphins. Vashnu ambra glodde Ryan Tannehill e Mike Wallace, ven "otrana fibir molona!"

Banta har'avu trishnu homebar, a Miami!!

If Grimes cant go?

For starters, No one's going to look to Woodson to start cb at age 37. If Grimes cant go it may guarantee neither Patterson nor Marshall will be cut.

Also, don't completely rule out Will Davis challenging for a starter spot. I've been reading some pretty good things about him.

Best case scenario I see for Woodson becoming a Dolphin is if Clemons underwhelms or gets injured and does not start the season at safety.

Woodson at 37 yrs of age and starting at cb, I don't see that happening with any NFL team short of lose both their starting cb's. Then that's very "iffy".

Woodson Is A HOFer No Doubt About That.

But He Is At The End. Not In His Prime. Or In His Twilight. But The End.

Philbin Needs Players He Can See On The Team For More Than 1 Season.

Even Clabo. If He Plays Well The Fins Can Keep Him 1-2 More Years. While They Draft His Replacement.

Plus, C. Woodson Isn't Known As The Best Locker room Guy To Have Around.

The Team Is Set.

We Are Ready To Go Into Camp And Watch The Battles.

If Philbin Manages To Do The Same Thing This Year He Did Last Year. We Will Be Fun To Watch On Both Sides

Armando,

Why don't extend the contracts of important players that their contracts will expire next year (e.g. Paul Soliai). Jimmy Johnson used to do that because he said that these players become much more expensive when they hit the free agent market. If they are good core players and you have the salary cap, keep them.

Rule out Will Davis?? I was the one that posted his name in this blog a month + before the draft along with Jamar Taylor and several others. To me, the Dolphins drafted the best and CB in Taylor and another one in the top 5 (Davis) at very good value. These guys will be around a long time.

Ross, save the Dolphins. SELL THE TEAM!

I listened to Jason Cole's podcast on md.com. Was boring as hell, but, he brought up a very interesting point.

"Cam Wake hasn't ever played with a #2 pass rusher since being in Miami. All he's played with were a bunch of 3's and 4's. So, oc's have had the luxury of rolling paas protection his way without worry of anyone else."

He goes onto to say:

Dion Jordan is a #1 caliber pass rusher. Teams will no longer be able to consistently roll pass protection Wake's way. So, Dion Jordan doesn't necessarily have to be a pass rush terror himself. His presense on the other side will will free some of the double teams on Wake. Allowing Wake's pressures and sacks to go up."

When he awakened me to this, it more than makes sense.

So, if Jordan can get 4-5 sacks, and lots of pressures his first 8 games. This could free Wake up for a monster season. If this happens, I wouldn't be surprised in the least if Wake racks up 18-22 sacks and 2013 "Defensive MVP".

How much do you think we can get if we trade ZOnk and harmel?

YG, are you serious? You never thought what the acquisition of another pass rusher would do for Wake and the entire defense? Sure you have, you've posted on it quite a bit ...

Mark,

I agree. I believe the Taylor/Davis tandem will be everything we expected but did not get from the Smith/Davis tandem.

I expect that in the near future, the Taylor/Davis tandem will be the best since the Madison/Surtain tandem.

They have that potential physically ... but then again so did Davis and Smith ... they just didn't ahve it upstairs.

Cant trade what's worthless ,Mark.

Yo soy un homosexual Cristiano.

Mark,

Basically many here don't see so much in Dion Jordan. My reason for making that post was, even if Jordan only has 6-7 sacks his impact will be far greater.

Many here will think Jordan a #3 overall bust with a 6-7 sack total. Even if Wake has 19-22 sacks and defensive mvp. He should also have an impact in coverage against the Pats 2 TE's.

I believe what we'll possibly see from Dion Jordan can be equated to an NBA player having a "triple double". Or sort of like Lebron James, with points/rebounds/assts.

He may not always completely blow you away with a single stat alone. But, at the end of the day, you look at the overall totals and go:

WOW!

I cant wait till Dan Carpnter gets cut, that SOB cost us 3 games last year.

But, at the end of the day, you look at the overall totals and go:

WOW!

From listening to both Taylor/Davis rookie pressers, both have "BY FAR" more upstairs operating equipment than Smith/Davis.

!Hola! Me llamo Dashi!

Smith is a fuckin dumba$$

The Defense As A Whole Is Better.

Wake Will Already Have More Help From The LBs With The Pass Rush. Adding DJ Was Just Icing On The Cake.

Wake Will Also Be In A Bigger Rotation. Meaning He Won't Have To Be On The Field All The Time. Giving Him More Chances To Really Bring It On Passing Downs.

Wake
Jordan
Odrick
Vernon
Shelby

Not A Bad Rotation To Have.

And Starks And Soliai Occupy 3 Players On Every Play.

We Should Be Able To Bring A Good Pass Rush With Only 4 Down Linemen. While Also Defending The Run.

Bellichick may have made a grave mistake making TE the focal point of his offense. Ireland went out and got the "anti-venom" to this deadly snake bite over the off season. Better corners too.

Not that we needed better cb's against the weakest link on their offense, wr's. Our wr corps is now even greater than the Pats.

So if you have the anti-venom to their deadly poisonous TE corps. Brady's in huge trouble against a d like that in 2013.

Guys I will be jizzing my pants the first time I see Jordan and Wake sandwhich Brandy for a sack and he fumbles the ball, music to my ears

Yeah, you put a strong CB on the TE like Milliner did with Eifert in the Ala-ND Game. 0 catches.

If things go the way Ireland planned for them to, with the defensive fa and draft acquisitions. Plus what he has added on offense.

We may have closed the gap o the Pats more than the prognosticators and even we think.

Better pass coverage, especially against TE's, means Brady has to hold the football longer than he's previously accustomed to against a dolphins defense.

And better pass rush? Brady hold's the ball and he;s sacked or has to throw it away. We also know that whem Brady gets "rattled", he has a propensity to begin throwing picks too.

Armando,

The Washington Redskins name is offensive to native Americans. They should change their name to The Washington Foreskins. They should have a penis on the side of their helmet instead of the Indian. At worst they should have a profile of Liberace. This would satisfy the Gay movement in sports. Everybody, Hail To The Foreskins...

Truth, keep the Kleenex box nearby

Dawn Aponte is a goddess !! Joe Philbin is a Winner period !! Jeff Ireland better hope we win 9 games this year or Ms.Dawn Aponte in January 2014 will be the 1.st female g.m. in pro sports book it !!

Also, at Oregon, there were times when Dion Jordan was assigned to cover a wr. That's how confident they were in his pass coverage.

This could be a very interesting year on the defensive side of the ball 'fellas!

Acorn money? Music to my ears.

Naw Mark, inside of my pants what do I need tissue for?

The Redskins should just change their names to the "Washington Federals" and use George Washington's image as their logo.

This is long overdue.

I guess it also means you'll wait until halftime or game's end to shower and change. LOL...

Posted by: Truth | May 10, 2013 at 03:04 PM

If you're really quick, you can wait until commercial timeout. LOL...

Washington Generals

But The Patriots Already Have The Soldier Thing.

I see jordan causing alot of coverage sacks due to him covering up te's and backs most qb's safety valves who have eaten miami up when it counts for years. Why is he only judged by sacks? Int's and fumbles , forced or recovered, dont count? What about passes defensed?

We finally have a brilliant offensive mind as head coach. Could a brilliant offensive mind also have solid clue as how to also "slow down" brilliant offenses?

Seems this offseason "defensive haul" suggests so. Is it coincidence Ireland has what easily looks like his best defensive haul since becoming a Dolphin gm?

Is it coincidence, offensive genius hc Bill Walsh also had great defenses? The things that make you go.... hmmm..........hmm-hmmm..........hmmm-hmmm...........

The sb era 49ers were well known for their great db play. So, who does Philbin make his DC? DB guru, Kevin Coyle.

The things that make you go, hmmm............. hmmm-hmmm..... hmmm-hmmm........................

In one short full season, Philibin's magic makes both Sean Smith and Vontae disappear.

Only a Jests fan would support Ireland.

Philbin's magic act isn't quite done yet. Although many of the underperformers or players that held this team back have already "magically disappeared".

I see just a few more disappearing acts to come. Stay tuned to camp and preseason.

Only a Jests fan would support Ireland.

Now, if only Philbin's magic could make you disappear!

Philbin also seems to be the first post-Shula hc, that Shula himself has stamped his seal of approval on.

Philbin also seems to be the first post-Shula hc that actually has a brain.

Did anyone else notice how Texas A&M's offence improved dramatically after Tannehill and Sherman left?

Johnny Football caught NCAA football by surprise. Now, college Dc's have had a full offseason and defensive game tape to catch up with him.

Before getting too far ahead of ourselves singing Johnny Football praises. Let's see how well he likes these DC's in year 2.

YG, correctomundo!

cerrectamundo???

Aaaay!!

Go Fonzie!!

I do that every time I look down in the shower.

the best money miami could spend would be to give Jason Taylor some money to coach Jordan. Mentor him right and we could win for some time.

I like the idea of Freeney for a one year mentor also. Squeeze every last sack out of Freeney and let Jordan learn from a pro.

YG & Dashi,

How about "The Washington Guns" & an "AR15" logo!

Now, I don't think Woodson is needed. Our CB draft picks are faster than the previous duo of Smith/Davis and, together with our considered "good in coverage" LB/DE picks, should improve our Safeties TE coverage.

ya, squeeze Freeney's sack

Being a great player has absolutely no bearing on an ability to coach.

For example, Dwight Stephenson was a HOF center without peer, yet when Shula brought him in as an OL assistant he only lasted one year and later described it as an awful experience.

Jason Taylor is a different guy, I recognize, but there is nothing to suggest he could do anything special as an assistant.

Besides, would YOU take the paycut from having a cushy studio analyst job to toiling in obscurity in that July sauna?

Doubtful.

I just watched a rerun of the December 2 fourth quarter drive of Tom Frady that made our corners and linebackers look like minced meat. Hope you fellows are right in that we can now stop a 2 second drop back and pass for ten yards. I hope your right. I sure hope your right.

I predict Seattle will go no better than 8-8 this year.

Wilson is a one year wonder. He was a great college player, but this is the NFL. The league will watch how we beat them and it is a copycat league.

Since I dislike Pete Carroll, this is a good thing.

Thirty-sebem years old? Ray Lewis was 172 years old when they fought!!!!

Name that movie.

couch, it's Joe Louis and from coming to america

Dont worry about the cap. Cheapskate Ross wont spend too much LOL

Tannehill cant even score any points against the Pats YIKES!

Bob,

You do know that we no longer have those Linebackers and that our cornerback corp was decimated with injuries all year long.

Also, if we could score and put a little pressure on Brady to score more points we might get a turnover or two.

I think we added a few people this year that might give Mr. Brady and Mr. Bellichik some reason for concern

Is the movie ..

Invasion of Uranus?
