A look at Miami's tackle auditions

Eric Winston.

Tyson Clabo.

Bryant  McKinnie.

Winston Justice.

Let's play pick the offensive tackle!

The Dolphins have basically conducted an open offensive tackle tryout this week in order to try to fill their most glaring need remaining this offseason.

All of the players they've brought in to audition for the part have been excellent to good NFL players at one time. All of the players they've brought in are no longer the players they once were. All of the players they've brought in have been cast off by other teams now, some of them by multiple other teams. All of the players they've brought in want significant money -- at least $3 million for one season. All of the players they've brought in are probably just one-year solutions, in the Dolphins' mind. All of the players they've brought in had to work during their visits.

This is a tryout, not a classic free agent visit. Yes, there are meetings with the coaching staff and meals and so forth. But all the players have been or will be put through a work out on the field.

So which player will the Dolphins pick?

Which is the best option?

Obviously, we're not allowed to see the workouts. So assuming all the players are in relatively equal shape (probably a bad assumption) the Dolphins have to also judge a variety of factors.

Injury history.

Contract demands/desire.

Character/Culture fit.

Right off the bat if one of these players is willing to play for one year and relatively cheaply, he has an advantage. I don't know that any will do that, but that's out there. I would assume that the most expensive of the bunch would be Bryant McKinnie because he's the only actual left tackle of the group. Left tackles are more valuable.

The problem is McKinnie is clearly the worst character and culture fit. He's not Chad Johnson, as I mentioned in a previous blog post because he hasn't really been in constant legal problems. But he has been known to be a headache to coaches -- even last year in Baltimore. He is also an unrepentant partier. He has even recently hosted a party at a local club in Pembroke Pines as recently as two weeks ago.

Now, there's nothing wrong with partying. But even if McKinnie isn't the king of all partiers, he's royalty. And as the Dolphins are within 12 miles of Pembroke Pines and South Beach is down the coast a bit, this can lead to some distractions and negative example setting.

Just saying.

Winston, Clabo and Justice are not saints. But they're not in McKinnie's league at all.

Injuries?

McKinnie is clean in this regard. He didn't start a game last season during the regular season but that wasn't due to injury. He was overweight (another red flag) and out of shape (red flag) and it took him much of the season to get back in shape. He started every playoff game at left tackle.

Clabo last season managed a hip injury but continued to add to his 101 starts with the Falcons. He has not missed a game in five seasons. The chart below is missing a start in 2012.

Justice is not quite the iron man. He has started 16 NFL only once in his seven previous seasons, that coming in 2009. He was limited to 12 games last season with Indianapolis.

Eric Winston, like Clabo, answers the bell. He has started 16 games every year since 2007.

The age issue isn't really one. Look, the Dolphins know each man's age. They still brought them all in. This signing won't be a long-term affair. Even if the eventual contract signed is a multi-year deal, in all probability this will be a one-year rental.

Sidenotes:

The Dolphins are not the only team searching for tackle help. The Chargers need help at left tackle. The Ravens do also.

All are relatively interested in McKinnie. The Dolpins are really the only team trying out right tackles because they believe Jonathan Martin on some level can play left tackle. The Raven have Michael Oher and still would rather have a left tackle. The Chargers just drafted D.J. Fluker to play right tackle.

It should be interesting to compare and contrast how the three teams address the same need going forward. To me, however, this is starting to feel a bit like a Marc Colombo redo. I've seen this scenario before.

Arto...you may be correct...but they sure are spinning their wheels over it big time.....

It's called due diligence. It's really only the media spinning their wheels.

So you are saying that Martin may not be the sure thing in their mind that he is in yours, and they are hedging their bet....okay...I can appreciate that..

...I hope you're right; I thought he played pretty well last year , and I don't imagine it's easy to change positions mid-season like he was asked to do...

..so , hey, why not...

GO MARTIN!!! GO FINS!!!! JUST WIN!!!!!

Winston or Clabo!!!! But sign the Tackle already!!!

Plenty of options, plenty of time and plenty more to come. Have patience and be happy that it's may and we're concerned over one position.

Sign Clabo.

He's a pro bowler.

Martin played lt and switched to the right.

Just put him back on the left side.

Seems easy to me.

Buster do you understand what due diligence means? It means responsibility to gauge all options as thoroughly as possible. One can draw no other conclusions without first hand evidence.

The KC Chiefs are trying to cut a deal with the franchised LT Albert to retain his services and not trade him. (reported by PFT) This will be costly for them but their OL should be decent.

Oops,,,,,,,,he did it again.

Yesterday he was arguing with himself as oscar and nikT

Now this.

YG.........

SEEMS LIKE MR.ODIN DOESN'T LIKE YOUR GUTS ....HE SPOKE ILL OF YOU YESTERDAY

Posted by: ALoco | May 01, 2013 at 05:58 PM

He spoke ill of my guts...really !!! You're not just trying to get me riled up now, are you? Because regardless of what is said, it really doesn't count unless i'm around to hear it. And even then, I usually dismiss it out of hand. I generally don't emote.

Posted by: Buster | May 01, 2013 at 06:01 PM

How hard is it to remember what name you're trolling with, sheesh-lol.

Aloco Oscar buster and YG

all one and the same.

With the Albert deal dead, per PFT and NFL.com, the best thing to do is nail down Clabo or Winston and move Martinto Left tackle which is his natural position. Stop screwing around with this problem before it becomes a major distraction.

Duh ...if that's a reference to me...I've been posting as Buster for well over five years now, and none other...if you would have read my next post you would have seen that I apologized for misreading the salutation....but little things like that don't matter I suppose....

...and Arto...what's the difference between due diligence and hedging their bet...just two ways of saying that they are being attentive to it, and are busy touching all the bases...

.....but I thoroughly understand, so you don't need to ask

...and back to his person hiding behind the name "duh"

Y G and Oscar and I have had three way exchanges over the past few months...

...if you are implying that ONE PERSON is carrying on a three-way conversation.....then you are one sick s.o.b. and need professional help....

I'm pretty sure that Buster, YG and I are three different Persons. However, we are the only Posters here.

Yo Oscar...can you imagine...this guy thinks you and I are the same person....oh..and also YG

...everyone knows you and YG are not nearly as nutzo as I am.....

Well..I have to roll on down the road....ciao all...

I think we needed a a left guard in the draft and that is what we got ( plus he is versatile ). All of this tackle stuff is just insurance.
I will say it again, the only way we get Albert is if the Chiefs give him to us to take his contract off their hands.
We have all these veteran OTs jumping through hoops for a job. All we need at tackle is insurance.

I don't think you understand, Buster. I believe there is only you, YG, and I posting here at this time. Nobody else. I always write under one name, my real one btw, as I'm proud of it. So, all those other nicks that appear here must be coming from you or YG(probably YG as he has a history of flipping).

Why is it that whenever I enter the Blog posters here scurry away? Darn it.

And I thought it was me, Oscar.

There are a total of about 8 regular posters on this blog. They each have 8 different names. At any given time, it's only 2 or 3 of them talking to themselves.

Broward County was smart not to give charity to a 4.4 BILLION DOLLAR man. Will Dade County be dumb enough to do it again after the Marlins fiasco?

Posted by: Yesterday's Gone 4Ever | May 01, 2013 at 02:38 PM -- MY RESPONSES IN CAPS NOT TO YELL JUST TO DELINEATE:
3 Starters Out Of This Draft:
1. Dion Jordan (NO BRAINER)
2. Jamar Taylor (NOT A GIVEN BY ANY STRETCH, HE HAD A 5TH ROUND GRADE COMING INTO LAST SEASON SO HE COULD EITHER BE AN ASCENDING PLAYER OR A FLUKE OUT OF THE WAC)
3. Kaleb Sturgis (ONLY BECAUSE FIRELAND WILL ALWAYS GO WITH THE CHEAPER OPTION NOT NECESSARILY THE BETTER PLAYER AND HE COULD HAVE GOTTEN AN OT HERE)

4 High Impact Contributors: (BASED ON WHAT???)
1. Will Davis(St's, dime, safety) (WE'RE DRAFTING ST PLAYERS IN THE THIRD ROUND????)
2. Jelani Jenkins(St's, coverage packages)(HE COULDN'T HOLD CHASE THOMAS' JOCK)
3. Dion Sims(redzone, 3rd downs, 2 Te's, seam)
(HE COULD JUST AS LIKELY BE ANOTHER EGNEW-ESQUE BUST)
4. Mike Gillislee(could even challenge Lamar Miller) (REALLY? OR HE COULD BE DANIEL THOMAS 2.0. IF FIRELAND WANTED A RB ON DAY 2 THERE WERE MUCH BETTER OPTIONS AVAILABLE WHEN HE TOOK SIMS. LIKE JONATHAN FRANKLIN, MARCUS LATTIMORE OR STEPFAN TAYLOR)
Diamond In The Rough:
1. Don Jones( A slight project that could yield very high dividends shortl down the road). OR HE COULD BE ANOTHER KELCIE MCCRAY WHO COINCIDENTALLY ALSO WENT TO THAT ILLUSTRIOUS FOOTBALL FACTORY KNOWN AS ARKANSAS STATE. HOW'D THAT WORK OUT?

I don't know about anyone else, but, this checks out as a great draft to me.
THEIR NEEDS GOING IN WERE:
1) A LEFT TACKLE - DIDN'T GET ONE. DIDN'T GET A RT EITHER IF HE PLANNED TO PUT J-MART AT LT.
2) A STARTING CB - MIGHT HAVE ONE IN JAMAR TAYLOR. MIGHT NOT. IT'S 50/50. RIGHT NOW RICHARD MARSHALL AND BRENT GRIMES ARE YOUR STARTERS. ONE COMING OFF BACK SURGERY, THE OTHER COMING OFF AN ACHILLES.
3) A TIGHT END - GRABBED A SLOW LOAD IN DION SIMS.
4) A YOUNG DT - DIDN'T GET ONE.
5) ANOTHER SAFETY - DIDN'T GET ONE.

Once again, as above, we see one of the regulars forgetting to change his name. Those who cry wolf....

The only reason Ross changed the logo and uniforms is to make the fans pay him more. Havent Dolphin fans paid more then enough....for a terrible on the field product from Ross? For 4 years? And overall 16 years since a playoff win? The franchise is enept and run improperly if winning is the goal.

You took 16 minutes to reply to my last Post. Checking with Armando?

I will take Eric Winston he the best of all them.Clabo is the 2nd best.

Ross could get the money from 2 investors if he didnt want to spend his money.

And who needs a roof anyway?

What you say BusterDays Gone?

The way I see it; Philbin needs FOOTBALL PLAYERS with speed and athleticism ( not to be confused with fast athletes trying to play football ). There is a difference.

Cant believe there is so much debate on which FA RT is better.

Here, I'll tell you a true Story. In 2008, when We started attacking Fidel Castro with the cyberguerrilla, he gathered many students from the school of Informatic Sciences there and formed an operative called Operacion Verdad(Truth Campaign). Any body that so much tried to tell the truth about the Castro regime in any Cuban Blog was immediately attacked from many angles and tactics(discrediting the poster, deviation of theme, and many others) by the Wolfpack(la Jauria , we called it). They didn't succeed in their aim and now many members of that operative have been ordered to leave Cuba and are living in other Countries. Why didn't they succeed being so many against the very few? The Truth, the Truth, they tried to fight the Truth. You dig?

Tannehill is F'KKD at LT with any of the candidates.

9-7. Sounds good.

I, also like to watch Mission Impossible.

Follow LV better than you. Yes.

9-7 Sounds impossible.

The dolphins are trying to sign both a LT and a RT for cheap don't know were that leaves Martin they offered Bryant M a contract and would like one of the RTs too

===================

I only copied your stupid sign in name because the content of your post was even more worthless.

Post a link and let us know just exactly who had Taylor rankes as a 5th round talent?

Your post on Sims just as atrocious. Sims graded out as Mr. First Down/Mr. Red Zone. Quick and fast, especially for a Gargantuan!

Will Davis basically played CB for ONE year and set NCAA records. When the talent you play against is questionable, you should stand out as a Man among Boys. He did just that.

You're welcome to your opinion. But please, your attempted refutations above are laughable.

You must get awfully Dizzy spinning the way you do.

CYA--cover your assterrior.

You talk like you're in the room contributing to actual team decisions. You have no clue what their plans are/were.

If you can't see the depth on this roster and the players here already that could answer many of your questions then no one can help you.

Go build a Madden team and quit being such a Debbie Downer. Team looks good enough to get on a roll. Appreciate the youth which equals opportunity for development.

Posted by: odinseye | May 01, 2013 at 11:03 PM

Exactly

Why not, Steve in Ottawa? 9-7 is not far removed from 8-8 and LV has given Us a middle of the Road rating.

Well...O Line no longer weak link.

Looks like theres a new sheriff in town.

Dolphins defense finished #7. We just added arguably the best Defensive player in the draft. Upgraded LB's and secondary.

And you added the Fastest WR in the league and a guy who lead league in 1st downs.

Tony Romo first on hit list

Hireland,

We have an obvious problem at Left Tackle. But as far as the line goes, that's it.

This line is shaping up nicely with some key acquisitions complete with positional interchangeability-LOL!

Seriously though, we have the Best Center in football, with arguably the best back up Center in Samuda. He's very young and can play guard at a high level.

Garner has developed into a good player. He can also play Guard, Tackle AND Center.

Dallas Thomas has positional flexibility. Lance Louis was a great addition. Cogs may not be the future, but for now, he's great. Just made a Pro Bowl.

Martin is working hard, improving and fully intends to win the starting Left Tackle job outright.

The Lance Louis signing should have lit a fire under John Jerry's ass. At best, Jerry could be a force to be reckoned with. If not, some solid Depth. He even has versatility in that he can at least offer depth at guard and tackle.

Ireland and Philbin have done a lot in one and half seasons. They'll get this line situated and there will be some great competition during camp this year.

The extra Pre Season game is a Big Plus and Philbin will take fill advantage. This teams on the rise.......FINALLY!!!!

Oscar , I dont care what you say that LV says, I just cant imagine this team 9-7.

9-7 impossible?

That's Troll Talk!

Save for Carpenters misses, we were a 10-6 team ALREADY!

That was BEFORE all the OBVIOUS upgrades through free agency and the draft.

I didn't know anything about Gillislee.

So I spent about an hour watching everything I could find on the net.

I'm now fully convinced that this kid was a STEAL!

I think he's better than Daniel Thomas right now......TODAY!

It's Lamar Miller that needs to be watching his back.

I can imagine 9-7, in an extremely derogatory scenario.

odin , my grandma is better then Daniel Thomas right now....TODAY! SO WHAT??

I sent a memo to Mike Sherman yesterday. It outlines the new Redzone Jumbo package that I'll have him using inside the ten yard line.

It'll be sporting double TE's with Sims and Keller(both good red zone targets).

With Will Yeatman at Fullback and Javorski Lane at Tailback.

odin , my grandma is better then Daniel Thomas right now....TODAY! SO WHAT??

Nice Post there.......Stevie!

So, you're resorting to deleting my comments now? Your Blog is sh-t, no need to cover it so much. Who's paying you?

Stevie,

For future reference........

When trying to sound like a tough computer gangster, loose the "So What(makes you sound like a Poosy)"

Try: "Now What!" instead.

As in: My Grand Mammy is better than Daniel Thomas right now.....TODAY! **NOW WHAT**

See what I mean you Poos.......ah........I mean.......STEVIE?

Now What.......STEVIE?

Now What!?!?

The Elvis film 'Clambake' is the apex of cinematic achievement.

Forget about Citizen Kane or Sunset Boulevard or La Dolce Vita. The hell with Kubrick, Fellini, Scorsese, and Kurosawa.

CLAMBAKE towers over them all, with hands on hips and head thrown back laughing at these INSECT pretenders to the throne!

Thomas is loaded with talent. Other problems abound.

Dion Jordan played at 230 lbs almost his entire time at Oregon.

He added almost 20 lbs for the combine and got his body fat down to 3%.

Trying to add more muscle and weight under these circumstances will be nearly impossible. It will be a hard and slow process regardless.

Yet Armando is tweeting that his "Sources" are telling him Jordan will be a DE exclusively. Probably the same sources that told him Miami is in no way, shape, or form interested in Bryant McKinnie.

Coyle should keep Wake, Shelby and Vernon in the DE rotation.

With Jordan introducing the entirely new position of "Marauding OLB".

I still can't wait for the first time Brady has Vernon and Jordan coming off the weak side and Wake the strong!
