Reshad Jones not at offseason session today

Safety Reshad Jones, the Dolphins most productive and promising defensive back, did not attend Monday's offseason conditioning session according to a team source.

The club spent much of the morning trying to locate Jones, who until Monday had near perfect attendance in the offseason program. The Dolphins start their first set of OTA days Tuesday and will continue on Wednesday and Thursday with on-field drills. The work Monday was closed to the media but the club is scheduled to open the OTA workout Tuesday.

All offseason conditioning and OTA activities are voluntary and players are not subject to fines for missing them.

The reason for Jones' absence is not completely known to the team's front office and coaches but there has been speculation among some teammates that Jones is unsatisfied with the progress -- or more accurately, the lack of progress -- in talks to extend his contract.

It is known Jones' representative and the Dolphins have had intermitent discussions about a new contract for Jones but those have obviously not been fruitful to the point of getting an extension done.

Jones was unavailable for comment. Agent Joel Segal, who represents Jones, did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.

Whether Jones plans to attend the OTA sessions Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday is unclear. Missing those would be a more clear and obvious sign that Jones is unhappy.

[Update: A source close to Jones tells me he is not planning to show up for OTAs Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday unless contract talks begin.]

This season, Jones is scheduled to be in the final year of his rookie contract which he signed as a fifth-round draft pick out of the University of Georgia in 2010. But Jones has largely outperformed that deal, starting 28 games the past two seasons. On a team looking for defensive playmakers, Jones has been second only to defensive end Cameron Wake in that department.

Aside from leading the team with four interceptions last year, Jones also forced two fumbles, recovered two fumbles, had one sack and three quarterback hits. Jones was also third on the team with 74 solo tackles.

Jones is scheduled to make $1.323 million this season, according to figures filed with the NFL Players Association. That would make him the team's lowest-paid starting defensive back and among the club's lowest paid starters -- depending on which players win starting jobs in training camp.

The Dolphins have had other players show their displeasure by staying away from the offseason program recently. Defensive tackle Randy Starks, Miami's franchise player, skipped the early portion of this year's offseason program. Last year, Wake skipped part of the offseason program as well as he was looking for a contract extension because he was enterring the final year of his first deal with Miami.

The Dolphins eventually rewarded Wake with a five-year, $34.53 million deal last May.

This offseason the Dolphins have spent $91 million in guaranteed money and approximately $204 million overall on new contracts.

Bottom line.

The defense was tailor made for Jones last year.

Players knew it, the pro bowl voters knew it, the coaches knew it, AND his agent knows it very well.

The year before when her had more assignments he struggled.

The defense is going to change a bit for him this season and Ireland has no idea if he will excel or fall back to his old self.

You DO NOT sign this kid to a multi-year contract until at least week 8 even maybe waiting until the end of the season. No good GM with all of the facts presented would jump to sign him now. He will play better if he's playing for a contract. The end.

If I were his agent I'd tell him to give Miami back money for his first 2 seasons, when he stunk.

Holding out only hurts the team. He better not hold out long or he's going right in Joes doghouse.

Rosengas...hehhhhhh

Thank you for that useless post Remembers. Perhaps you didn't remember that this blog is full of opinions based on analysis that we do on the fly from our homes? Or did you miss the multiple other posts where people drew conclusions on this story all by themselves?

Not one person brought up the fact that the defense was designed for Jones to roam and that helped him inflate his numbers. I made an excellent point and you have said nothing that anyone would want to read and certainly nothing anyone will remember. You add zero to this blog so thank you and go f%$k yourself.

to all the dumb poster...........

I SALUTE EVERY PLAYER FOR NOT SHOWING UP TODAY AND GER INJURED LIKE LONG 2 YEARS AGO.....

WAKE DIDN'T SHOW UP LAST YEAR AS WELL THIS YEAR AND HAD A BETTER SEASON THAN ALL OUR CELLAR PLAYERS WHO SHOWED UP ....

SALUTE TO YOU JONES,

Philbin doesnt like this attitude. I dont either. Go play good football, and then you will get a new contract. Dont give me attitude!

I cant do that at my dayjob when I am overperforming. Just special boys do that. Be careful.

Now, now, be reasonable...

Mr. Jones get your contract taken care of today. The Dolphins can cut you immediately and they wouldn't have to "honor" the million or so dollars that they "owe" you.

One post and I'm immediately talked down to by some douch* who has never made a good point in the history of this blog. Have fun stalking everyone tonight you freakin heap of human waste. I'm out

Wow, phins78. You sound like a really mature guy!

For the record, anyone else's opinion here (including mine) is just as valid as yours.

Futhermore, what you may think is an "excellent" point or some kind of insightful commentary may not dovetail with the opinion of others.

Apparently, though, any disagreement with your opinion on the matter is grounds for some kind of infantile meltdown.

Oh, and just to be clear on one thing: I'll post whatever and whenever I damn well want to here. You're just another guy here, sorry. And it's not your blog.

jones needs to stop crying about money, the tears are gonna ruin his jerry curl!

Funny you say that, but I get overly excelsed whenever I consider I did great work. Of course, I pay myself, and I don't last 4 years.

PHINS 78 IS A GREAT POSTER,IF JUST ALLOW OTHERS TO WRITE THEIR CRAPP AS THEY ALLOW HIM TO WRITE HIS CRAP .....

TO
BE
OR
NOT
TO
BE

Phins 78 is just another self important crybaby here. Trolls like him are why I hardly even look at this stupid blog anymore. Pay him no mind, remembers, your point about contract squabbles was dead on.

It's a common occurrence that players hold out in the nfl and then eventually get signed? Oh please tell me more all knowing know nothing. Thank you for enlightening me, I never would have known that had it not been for your post. Thank God I have you here to teach me about football. That's the best you could do? You couldn't comment further than to point out something that is obvious to even a newborn infant? My God you are the smartest guy in here. Hey Remembers, is it also a common occurrence when players get hurt that they ride on stationary bikes on the sideline to keep loose? I've seen this many times and can't figure it out. Please help. Also, why don't the coaches wear uniforms like they do in baseball? Is this a common occurrence? (LMAO on the way out)

Well, yes, Armando has it in his heading, No subject is Taboo. Dominican or not, you have balls, pal.

OSCAR........... WHAT DO YOU DO FOR LIVING ?

I divine People.

Man, you seriously seem to have issues.

You getting all that (and almost comically angry and defensive) simply from pointing out that the Dolphins in the past had MYRIAD contract disputes and holdouts or that I commented that perhaps you might be overanalyzing this particular situation?

Jesus, dude. Take a valium or something!

Posted by: Remembers | May 20, 2013 at 05:27 PM

Listen you stupid idiot. I made a comment about the story. You made a stupid comment about my comment.

DO YOU SEE THE DIFFERENCE DUMMY?

No crap your opinion is as valid as mine, I DIDN'T CHALLENGE YOUR F%$^ING OPINION!!

You challenged my opinion so don't act like a f^%$ing sissy when you do that and someone comes back at you. You want to challenge my opinion I'm going to defend myself especially in the face of someone talking down to me. How do you not understand this, are you from a different planet than the rest of us?

I didn't challenge your opinion on the story because as far as I could read back,,,,YOU DON'T HAVE ONE. yOU OFFER no OPINION OF THE STORY, SIT ON YOUR HIGH HORSE AND OFFER AN OPINION ON MY OPINION, and then tell me I don't have the right to defend my opinion to someone who treats me like that? You're f%$#iong crazy, plain aND SIMPLE. You are certifiable and certainly have no place telling others how react in the face of stupidity.

OK, now I'm actually enjoying this meltdown.

Please don't go!

I divine People. Yes.

Im sure Jones will gas up the Harley and ad some Morosso so that he will be on time tommorrow, or the most probable scenario is that Jones agent will open conversations, or already has on the topic of a new contract for Jones.Remember Smith the corner Jones played a lot better than him in 2012 and since injury is always possible in this business dont count om him being there Tuesday unless the bargining has started.

Phins it's the troll boy and if you noticed he just agreed with himself in another new sign on. He's just trying to get you going so you stay here and talk to him all night. Ignore him , he's not worth your time. Great point about Jones having a different assignment this year by the way.

Nah, he's an Adult(or supposed to be). Leave him to his own means.

Sorry, 'Troll Hunter,' but I'm not here to 'agree' with myself--whatever the hell that means.

By the way, is that your 'regular' screen name?

Too damn funny here.

OSCAR...IS THAT MEANS YOU DON'T HAVE A JOB AND COLLECTING MY TAX DOLLAR ?

Jones should refocus and handle it professionally...show up at all offseason workouts and camps..go the extra mile...this will only help him get that new contract..hopefully he has improved even more than last season..show ireland your no drama quenn..your a workout beast..thats football..

Pay the Man!! Ireland. End of Story!!!

Hell, I don't remember any disputes for $ among those SB Dolphins Players and Joe Robbie, or Edwin Pope never reported it.(there must have been some, for sure)

IRELAND SHOULD PAY JONES BEF0RE HE SABOTAGE THE TEAM ////

Football players cry a lot, remind em mcdonalds is hiring...see if they apppreciate the fat money they already make! greed

OSCAR,

IN THE OLD DAYS WERRE NO MONEY,SO THE LITTLE MONEY TEAMS HAD WENT TO THE OWNER ,BUT TODAY THERE'S A LOT OF MONEY ......IT'S OUR MONEY ,WHICH PAY FOR THE PLAYERS ....PLUS PLAYERS IN THE OLD DAYS WERE KIND OF DUMB .

Here's a "common occurrence" in the NFL: You DON'T get a new contract (read lots more money) for one good (not great) year. You DO however piss off coaches and GM.

Chad johnson in jail, wont even be on any nfl team at all now...

----------------------------------------

Seriously, Oscar? If you were around back then I can't imagine not remembering how very common it was.

Csonka, for one, was in almost perpetual battle with Robbie and management. Jim Langer left the team because of a contract dispute--so did Jake Scott (who Shula traded after a holdout).

Most famously (and I know you remember this) the guts were ripped out of the franchise when Csonka, Kiick, and Warfield signed with the WFL after Robbie refused to meet their contract demands.

Happened long after that, too. Marino and the team had some monumental contract disputes.

WTH! Ireland has been true in paying whoever is worth it his due. Forget it.

By the way, I'm not taking "sides" in this particular dispute.

I can see why Jones (and his agent) feels he's outperforming his rookie (5th round) contract and I also presume the Dolphins would prefer that he further cement his position with another solid year.

That said, we may be forgetting the Miami may well WANT to get something done and lock Jones up long-term sooner rather than later. He gives every indication of being a rising young player who can be part of the answer.

No reason for me to like ANY holdout, but as I said ultimately I think this is mountain out of molehill stuff in the bigger scheme and won't last long/be quickly forgotten and resolved.

You don't understand, I pay myself according to how I consider how well I worked.

COULD RESHAD HAVE ELOPED WITH THE LOVELY MARIA?

ONCE YOU GO BLACK..................................

((BUFFET OF TEENIE-WEENIE ALOCO WEENIE))

I do remember that one, Remembers, but that was partially set up by the League. No?

Ross is too cheap to pay good players

lawlz

Okay, so Remembers were you aware that the defense was designed to help the safety free roam because Coyle's true design would have been too tough for a rookie safety to pick up? And that Coyle is going to force his full defense on the team this year which means more assignments for Jones, more thinking and less reacting?

That was the point that I thought was a good addition to the blog. I don't believe anyone brought that up and it is very important when playing armchair GM. It's very easy to figure out what is going on behind the scenes when you know those facts. I don't know why (when you were telling me my thinking was off) you didn't also point that part of my post out.

Your post to me was snarky. Read back and admit it. You posted three minutes after my post and didn't have anything to add. I wrote it tells me and then you copy my exact words ("it tells me") as you're telling me I'm over thinking the issue. It was condescending and I should have just ignored you. I shouldn't have been upset because I can't control how people are going to talk to me in here. I just have to learn to ignore it. It bothers me though that you don't realize there was a better way you could have debated my post with me. You seem like an intelligent guy from what I've been able to read of your posts. There's no reason for you to not understand how that came off.

I own up to my over reaction. That will happen when every time someone makes a point in here there is someone lying in wait to be mean just for the sake of being mean. It causes people to get defensive. I reread your post, it wasn't as bad as I took but ehhhhhhhhh, definitely a little condescending in tone. No biggy, moving on and sorry for going overboard.

Thank you for the kind words Troll Hunter!

ALoco?

Phins 78 is a JACKASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Saying people hide while being hidden:

Hey, what happened to my Post? jeje

cocoajoe, I agree 100%.

That was part of the point I was making. He did well for ONE season and now we know the defense was slanted to his side of the field.

My two cents is that you don't give him an extension until he can show he is able to handle more of a workload. No more babying him, he either does what is expected or he can be replaced.

Who cares About the crappy Dolphins anymore?

yesterday's gone asks armando if he switches names.....double life is revealed as aloco....but yesterday's gone will still exclaim....

Oscar,

Mi mucho gordo de grande mas cu-lo neccesitos a su besa al labias.

YG.......

I WILL NEVER FIGHT WITH YOU .......

OSCAR...IS THAT MEANS YOU R NOT GETTING MY TAX DOLLARS ?

WHAT ABOUT YG ?

YG suck my D'ck

Phins78.....

Clearly the dude you were arguing was the same dude that used the Jack handle....

did the same thing with me the other day Phins....I had an opinion on Dijion Jordan...Jack's only opinion was about me....a case of the classic "try and start a fight".....

Don't let this guy rile you up Phins....that is how he get's off...don't give him the satisfaction....he even admitted to as much during the argument with you....

Hand this guy his @ss....but keep your cool doing it....

Hell, I wrote something that whenever a White Woman beds a black Man she never forgets it and this comment was deleted. ?

Dude if you're going to steal Dashi's sign in why not try to write like him to be convincing. Are you telling me you seriously can't crack his code? lol
