How the trades are playing out for the Dolphins

Within the last year the Dolphins have made three intriguing (some would say controversial) trades that exchanged players for draft picks -- the present in exchange for the future.

Well, the future has arrived in the form of actual people. So now we can look at what the Dolphins got in return for trading Brandon Marshall, Vontae Davis and Davone Bess.

In the spring of 2012, the Dolphins traded Marshall to the Chicago Bears for two third-round draft picks, one in 2012 and one in 2013.

The Dolphins used the pick last year in a trade down with San Diego but the outgrowth of that trade was the selection of tight end Michael Egnew with the 78th overall selection and the selection of receiver B.J. Cunningham with a sixth-round pick, the 183rd overall selection.

This year, Chicago's third rounder was the 82 overall pick.

The Dolphins traded that pick to New Orleans for two fourth-round selections, Nos. 106 and 109 overall. The Dolphins then picked TE Dion Sims with the 106th overall selection.

The Dolphins traded 109th overall selection, a fifth-rouner (146 overall), and a seventh-rounder (224 overall to Green Bay for the 93th overall pick, which is a third rounder. With that pick, the Dolphins selected Will Davis, the cornerback out of  Utah State.

Bottom line for the Marshall trade?

The Dolphins traded Marshall, a fifth-rounder, and a seventh-rounder for Michael Egnew, B.J. Cunningham, Dion Sims and Will Davis.

The Dolphins traded Bess, a staple at the slot receiver position since 2008, plus their fourth-rounder (111 overall) and a seventh-rounder (217 overall) to the Cleveland Browns during draft weekend. The Browns sent Miami a fourth-rounder (104 overall) and a fifth-rounder (164 overall).

The Dolphins used the fourth-round pick on linebacker Jelani Jenkins and the fifth-round pick on running back Mike Gillislee.

Bottom line fof the Bess trade?

The Dolphins traded Bess, a fourth-rounder and a seventh-rounder for Jelani Jenkins and Mike Gillislee.

The Vontae Davis trade is much easier to follow. The Dolphins traded their former first-round pick to the Colts for a a second-round pick. The trade delivered the 54th overall selection in this draft.

The Dolphins used that selection on another cornerback -- Boise State's Jamar Taylor.

Bottom linne for the Davis trade?

The Dolphins traded Vontae Davis for Jamar Taylor.

It's going to be interesting how all this plays out eventually.

Marshall went to the Pro Bowl in Chicago as he had the year before for the Dolphins. Egnew was a tremendous disappointment as a rookie and B.J. Cunningham was cut last year. It's seemingly up to Sims and Davis to redeem this swap.

But you must remember, the Dolphins got rid of Marshall because he didn't fit their culture. They didn't like him arguing with teammates (Chad Henne, Davis, Igor Olshansky) or coaches. They were concerned about his domestic violence issues.

So, I suppose, they would argue trading Marshall helped team chemistry and whatever talent it brings is a plus. I would say if Marshall, who has not had any reported problems with teammates or the law in Chicago, continues to be a solid citizen for the Bears, this deal will be judged solely on talent. So the onus is on Egnew, Sims and Davis to bring some sort of return for Miami's move because Marshall has so far done that for the Bears.

The Bess trade is interesting. He had an injury issue with the team at the end of last season that seemed to cause friction. He wasn't going to get nearly as many targets this year with the addition of Mike Wallace and Brandon Gibson. So the Dolphins were comfortable not having him.

Of course, that assumes no one is injured this year. Having Bess as a No. 4 wide receiver is a solid fall back option. It certainly provides more certainty than Rishard Matthews, or Jeff Fuller or Armon Binns. So there is a bit of a gamble here.

Meanwhile, the Dolphins got a solid special teams performer and perhaps passing-down contributor in Jenkins. Gillislee? He has the feel of a special teams guy at best. It's going to be hard for him to be on the 53-man roster, in my opinion, based on his play at the University of Florida. He is good injury insurance, however.

The trade I'm most encouraged about, believe it or not, is the Davis for Taylor trade.

People I speak with around the league seem to love the Taylor pick. Jeff Ireland really liked that pick, too. There are whispers within the organization that if Taylor is consistently for the Dolphins what he showed at times at Boise State, he can win a starting job in Miami and be better than Davis.

If that's the case, the Dolphins would be getting good value for the trade -- starting cornerback for starting cornerback. If not?

You know the answer.

Craig M = Village Idiot

CraigM,

Also, its reported that about 75% of Dion Sims catches resulted in either 1st downs or touchdowns. The kd's a beast once he has the ball in his hands.

YG,

I believe the guys who were comparing Simms to Algee Crumpler were spot on. Good comparison. I see it at least size wise and if his hands are decent we could end up with a pretty nice player here. Only thing is, I was a big fan of Virgil Green a few a years ago coming out and I think it was Atlanta who picked him and he's been a dud ever since.

YG, I Watched Gillislee.

What I Am Talking About Is L. Miller Has That Extra Gear.

Difference Between Wallace and Hartline.

Miller Doesn't Get Caught From Behind. Gillislee Does. Watch The Tape.

When L. Miller Is On The Field He Is Usually The Fastest Guy On The Field. Not anymore.

People With Angeles Miss. That Is How You Know If Someone Is Real Fast, Not Just Fast. Put The Tape On L. Miller. And Then Put The Tape On Gillislee You Will See The Difference. Miller Separates From People. Gillislee Doesn't.

YG,

It doesn't matter if he's a beast or not. Didn't you get the memo? Our season is over because we traded Devon Bess, our 4th WR. 'Huge mistake', I'm told. Maybe even bordering on 'disasterous'.....

Philbin & Ireland also said they had a plan for Bess. What happened to him? They said the same thing about a player last year too & POOF. Gone as well.

Certainly you can't believe everything you hear & read?!

Please, lay off the meth pipe & join the real world.

Yes, and we saw exactly what those "plans" for Bess were. They didn't say that they had "plans" for Egnew. They said that they are very excited about working with this year.

So, maybe you should try following the last couple sentences of your post to me yourself. Capiche?

I didn't read any of your other posts Mr. I'm always right. If you had noticed, I made ZERO mention of anything you said, just your pi*s poor attitude & overall douchebaggedness.

Like I said to Vegas, you can't read or if you can, you have no reading comprehension skills. You just provided evidence to back up that fact.

BTW, I'm not the only one to tell you you're reading is that of a 4th grader. Even that is a lil generous.

I'm polite. When people address me, I respond. That's why I responded to you now & earlier.

We all know you & your big mouth have to have the last word all the time. So, have at it blabbermouth. You proved my point anyway.

The court is yours...

I take exception with you being a loud mouthed buffoon.

I could care less what you think about anything. Only socially inept loser with no life or friends would actually read & take anything worthwhile from the constant bickering, nonsensical drivel you post here.

Cleared up for you hopefully? We know you don't understand diddly.

Mirror Mirror...

Obviously some random person on a blog knows exactly what the coaches think of Egnew...

He didn't make it on the field (much) year 1. It happens, if you don't see him this year then he probably won't be around much longer. Though I expect him to get a shot this year.

Don't write off a guy you haven't seen play...

Craig, if the first two picks pan out then it's a good draft. Those are the money rounds. If you get one more player out of the rest of them then it's a great draft. i personally think Davis will also be fine. Jenkins and Thomas have a chance just don't know too much about them. The kicker should make the team. Sims and Gillislee I think are too average.

I hated SD's draft and Tampa's pick of Johnathan banks was just awful.

Don't know what the Vikings did, ahve to look it up.

So, maybe you should try following the last couple sentences of your post to me yourself. Capiche?

You're sad. LOL

I bet you think strippers like you too.

IDIOT!

Posted by: Dashi | May 02, 2013 at 01:40 PM

I actually watched entire Gator games in which Gillislee played. So I'll have greatly disagree with you.

Im not going to hammer it home with you. Because as long as both are Dolphins, Im very fantastically happy with that. I believe Miller and Gillislee will be one of the best rb tandems in the league this year.

Enuff said!

heh, NFL already has power rankings up...

Jets are 27th... I have a feeling that is going to prove to be very generous.

"I take exception with you being a loud mouthed buffoon"

After this line I expected someone to be slapped with a white glove leading to a duel. At least that's how people used to settle things ...

They had the Dolphins rated 21st. We weren't even 21st last year. ESPN sucks the big bastone!!

HEY!! I will not stand for anyone besmirching the good name of strippers! They provide a necessary and useful service.

3 1st year starters(Jordan, Taylor, Sturgis) come from this draft, 4 if you count Gillislee as a costarter with Miller. Im sure that's what he'll play like.

There's great possibility Dallas Thomas is a starter at the og position in 2014. It will also be shocker if they allow this kid Will Davis to compete at fs and he takes Chris Clemons job away.

I'll also count Dion Sims as costarter as a 2nd TE. In the very least, Sims, Davis, and Jelani Jenkins will all be great impact contributors right away.

Ireland hit it out of the park with both draft and fa this year!

Craig. U can spew whatever garbage comes out of your mouth and some will buy it. My bet is that the majority of intillegent posters will not. Do I need to cut and paste Mandos breakdown for u? Or will u still argue that he is an idiot to and spin your ownbs agenda around how to defend Ireland every time . Read Mandos line about what the Marshall trade has netted so far. As he said, i said the same thing. Incomplete grade because 2 are this years rookies and the other is Egnew. I repeat once more for your feeble mind. Cunningham- gone. That would be a bust. Egnew- incomplete unless he doesnt make the team or fails miserably again this year. I can xcare less where he was drafted. Still a bust if he fails. The other two are rookies. So jury is still out. But lets not forget that Jeffy gave up two 2nd rounders for a guy we jettisoned two years later for less. Now go piss in somebody else's sandbox cuz thats what u do

THE DOLPHINS HAVE TALENT THIS YEAR BOTTOM LINE! NO MORE STACKING THE BOX WITH 8 DEFENDERS. YOU CAN NO LONGER DOUBLE THE WIDE RECEIVERS ON EITHER SIDE BECAUSE KELLER IS AN UPGRADE WHO HAS ALWAYS PRODUCED IN THIS LEAGUE. YOU CAN NO LONGER ROLL YOUR PASS PROTECTION TO WAKE SIDE AND NOT WORRY ABOUT THE OTHER PASS RUSHERS. OLDRICK AND JORDAN ARE BOTH CAPABLE OF 8-10 SACKS. YOU NO LONGER HAVE SLOW LINEBACKERS WHO CANNOT COVER TE(GRONK/HERNANDEZ)EVEN IN ZONE DEFENSE. YOU NO LONGER HAVE TO RELY ON N CARROLL AS YOUR OTHER CORNER AND YOU NO LONGER HAVE A KICKER WHO HAS A FAT CONTRACT AND NO COMPETITION. ALL IN ALL BARRING INJURIES I SEE 10 WIN SEASON EASY. WITH A LITTLE LUCK IN THE FIRST 5 GAMES MAYBE EVEN BETTER. THE DOLPHINS CANNOT AFFORD TO START THE SEASON 0-5 OR 1-4 BUT IT IS VERY POSSIBLE. ON THE OTHER HAND IF THEY SHOCK EVERYONE AND START 5-0 OR 4-1 THAN LOOK OUT. GO FINS!!!

A 2014 fa and draft like this one, and there's no reason the Miami Dolphins shouldn't be in sb talks consideration after a verrrrrrry long absence of being in even playoff talks considerations.

Great job Jeffy!

Pissing in sandboxes is not cool!!

Armando,
You also have to take into consideration the salary cap. The guys Miami traded makes lot of money compared to the guys we got in the 2nd or 3rd rounds. I agree CB Taylor is a great pic if there is no medical concern.

What is this point value crap? Only cheap People do that.

The more I think about it, the more I suspect Will Davis maybe allowed to compete for Clemons fs spot.

17 passes defensed? 1 pick in each of his final 5 games?

You have to allow a kid like this ample opportunity to crack your starting lineup somewhere. Even if he doesn't, its better you give him every ample opportunity, than coach like you've just arrived off of the banana boat.

I take this back, in Coyle's defense, there isn't a designated fs or ss. Still, Davis could be allowed to compete for Clemons starting job.

He seems more likely to get turnovers.

How Is Sims At 6'5" 265lbs 4.8-40 A Beast!!

And Egnew At 6'5" 255lbs 4.62-40 Not?

Please Explain.

Dashi Must Be Missing Something.

Oh and Can I Add Egnew Has 1 Year In The System. And In The NFL.

I Can See Sims Developing More Into A Future RT. Than Into The Future Gronk.

Algae Crumpler Is A Great Example Of What Sims Can Become. I See Him More Of A Fasano. Seriously, Ireland Didn't Hit On Every Pick. This Was A Pick More For Depth Than For Impact. We Need A Guy That Can Play Special Teams. Goalline. That Is How Sims Is Going To Make The Team His First 2 Seasons.

Add D. Jones In That Boat.

I Would Say Every Pick After The 3rd Round Was For Depth. Our First 4 Picks And The Kicker Are Sure Things To Make The Team. And Gillislee Depending How He Runs In The Preseason. At Best He Can Be The #2 Or 3rd Down Back. But He Can Easily Be Our 4th Or 5th Back. Behind Thigpen And Gray.

So there's chance 2013's defense could feature 3 new rookie starters(Dion Jordan, Jamar Taylor, and Will Davis).

Dashi,

Dashi doesn't understand because Dashi doesn't properly read posts.

I say Sims will be a load to bring down. What makes Gronk most beastly? He's a f'ucing load to bring down once he catches the ball.

Sims will be beastly in this respect, and will be a perfect compliment in contrast to the TE's we already have the roster. he will mostly be the greatest redzone enzone threat of the entire lot.

Yo..Mark....it's better than pissing in the pool......

tvegas,

Hey man, if you don't want to get into this either don't make IDIOTIC comments about 3rd round picks being 'disasterous' or instead of trying to cover your tracks, just let it go. You want to keep addressing me, then so be it.

Can you show me where I said Armando was an 'idiot' d*ckweed? I thought not. What I said was, what Armando didn't talk about was the plan to get Marshall's contract off the books and without doing that, without freeing up the capspace, they never would have signed Wallace. So therefore, you can't just look at the straight trade without taking Wallace into consideration.

You have a problem with me saying that, I couldn't really care. Trying to bring a lot more reality to the situation other than just players for players.

'Spew whatever garbage comes out of my mouth'? Like what? Like saying a third round pick who didn't perfom well last year has been 'a disaster' to date?

Ever think of holding a mirror up, bud?

I don't know about Will Davis as a S. Ireland described him as a pure outside CB and I see him the same way mainly because he lacks the strength. Taylor would be a S before Davis but that would also be a waste of Taylor's skill.

YG,

It's possible that Davis plays FS but I'd doubt it to begin the season. The talk is they want to use him 'outside' (CB), However, that's not to say that don't the road he might become the FS.

Don't forget about the kicker. Very good chance he's our guy next year too. I forgot him earlier when I was talking to Mark. I liked this move a lot.

Dashi,

Also, I have learned from 49yrs of watching pro football to ever expect anything from 7th rd picks. Occasionally a great one comes thru. Hopefully Jones can be this.

But to expect a 7ht rd pick to be a great one. You'll become disappointed far often than not. If he does geat, if not, I didn't expect it anyway.

If 7th rd'ers were so consistently great, well, they wouldn't get drafted 7th rd. Now would they.

Its better to expect nothing and get everything, than expect everything and get nothing.

Hi Dashi!

Pissing in the pool is also wrong. Repect your hosts .. don't piss in their pool ..

I just have one question...how can anyone, even the coaches, know at this point which player will play what position, who will make the team and who will not? It's ludicrous to even try and predict.

CraigM,

Unless Grimes doesn't hasn't rehabbed as smoothly as they think, Davis is unlikely to play outside. I don't see him beating out Taylor. Marshall moves to nickel where he was originally brought in to play.

So as a cb, all that's left for Davis to play is dime package cb. His best bet to start is to supplant Clemons at safety. It's not like Clemons is an untouchable, not even remotely close.

D. Jordan And J. Taylor Will Have An Impact As Rookies.

J. Taylor Reminds Me Of S. Madison.

W. Davis Should Challenge N. Carroll And J. Wilson For A Roster Spot And Playing Time.

D. Thomas Hopefully Challenges Incognito Or Jerry For A Starting Spot.

And Jenkins Should Be Able To Add Depth And Special Teams Play His Rookie Season.

Clemons was given a 1yr extension so he's literally out the door now, if Davis does a little pushing. LOL...

Mark....but is one permitted to piss in ones own pool?.....when alone?....huh?

....go ahead...I dare anybody to tell me they never did it.....

YG,

I Wouldn't Expect Anything From The 5th Round Down.

That Is Why I Actually Like Ireland Drafting A Kicker That High. You Try And Get As Much Value As You Can At That Point. Forget Need.

Ireland Did A Great Job All Around. I Expect 6 Out Of The 9 To Be Dolphins 3-4 Seasons. And Ireland's First 3 Picks All Had 1st Round Grades On Them.

Dashi,

Please don't ever fix your lips to compare Taylor to Madison. Madison was great in coverage but, Sean Smith against the run.

Taylor is great against the run. He resembles Vontae Davis in this aspect. I loved watching Madison in pass defense, but cringed watching him run way from tackles in run defense. Taylor will be a far more complete package than Madison.

Check the Fins "Ring Of Honor", you'll find Madison still missing. Jake Scott and Dick Anderson(safeties) are the only db's there period.

YG,

I don't believe Clemmons is untouchable either. I'm just saying I'll be shocked if Davis beats him out for the job, TO START THE SEASON. My guess is that Davis (assuming of course he makes the team), will back up the CBs and provide depth, at least initially. He'll have a ways to go to beat our Marshall and Patterson for playing time, IMO.

Had Sam Madison not been such a chicken s'hit against the run. He would be in Sun Life stadium as a ring of honor enrollee right now today.

DO YOU GUYS GET TIRED OF SAYING THE SAME CRAP ABOUT THIS TEAM ,DO YOU EVER GET TIRED OF PRETENDING ,YOU R SAYING SOME THING NEW ?

Posted by: Craig M | May 02, 2013 at 02:50 PM

I agree.

YG,

WHAT A PLAYER HAS TO DO TO GET INTO THAT CRAP CALLED ,(( RING OF HONOR ))????

BUster, we are nothing if not masters of our domain!

YG,

So You Feel Taylor Is More Surtain Than Madison?

I Would Say He Is More Cerebral Than Vontae. So Comparing Them 2 Is Futile.

I Don't Know If You Can Say Taylor Is Good In Run Support. Well He Is Good Not Great. So Agreed He Is No Madison. He Can Be P. Surtain.

Better Than What We Have Had In A While.

TODAY'S BLOG IS NOT GOOD ...

CRAIG M AND YG GETTING ALONG........NOT GOOD AT ALL .............

Had Madison not bee such a chicken s'hit against the run. He would probably be in the hof too.

Well, Mark...I guess that answers my question.....
