Dolphins camp Day Two in the books

I think I've figured it out. It took me a couple of practices and talking to a couple of people, but it is clear to me why the Dolphins applied the stiff-arm to fullback Vonta Leach late last week.

It's just that the Dolphins are going to use a one-back look with four pass-catchers (three receivers and a tight end) or an I-formation look with the tight end as the lead blocker look going forward. And none of that leaves a lot of room for a fullback on the roster.

It makes sense, really.

When you consider the Dolphins have three starting-caliber and high priced receivers in Mike Wallace, Brian Hartline and Brandon Gibson on the team, it makes sense to get them on the field as much as possible. When you consider Dustin Keller is an experienced and solid tight end and the Dolphins are heavily invested in the position with Charles Clay, Dion Sims, Kyle Miller and Michael Egnew, it makes sense to have an extra roster spot not occupied by a fullback and instead used on an extra tight end.

Voila, mystery solved.

So at the end of this camp, it is possible the Dolphins can keep either an extra tight end, or perhaps use the spot elsewhere such as cornerback or linebacker or receiver, and not feel the pinch of being lessened because the fullback spot has become marginalized, anyway.

I remind you the Dolphins still have two fullbacks on the roster: Jorvorskie Lane and Evan Rodriguez. But neither has gotten even one snap with the first or second-team offense in two days of camp that I've noticed. Both are in a deserate fight to merely make the team. I don't like their chances.

Now, I know at least a couple of you scoffed when you read Michael Egnew's name among the tight ends the Dolphins have invested in. Obviously, he was a disappointment last year. But today he had a relatively good day.

He caught a handful of passes (four actually) and that included a grab from Matt Moore between two defenders in tight coverage on a seam route that stretched 17 yards. It almost brought a tear to my eyes to witness. Almost.

Some other practice highlights:

Big men go one-on-one

I love the one-on-one pass rush drills when offensive and defensive lineman match wits, girth and physical attributes. Todays highlights?

Second-year defensive end Olivier Vernon, who is working with the starting unit and doing well in my opinion, schooled new left tackle Jonathan Martin on an inside move. Martin allowed his feet to get tangled. It was ugly.

Not surprisingly, veteran Randy Starks abused rookie Brian Thomas, a free agent out of Texas A&M, and he didn't even look like he was going full speed.

The Dolphins have an interesting situation working at defensive tackle. Jared Odrick has been impressive at the position which he's been playing exclusively so far in camp -- no defensive end work -- and so it could be Soliai and Starks on early downs and then Starks and Odrick on passing downs. Obviously, whichever player doesn't start will get plenty of playing time in rotation.

It's also possible Odrick might still be used at defensive end but, as I said, he hasn't worked at end yet in camp.

Devlin works with 2s

QB Pat Devlin got some second-team snaps today. Matt Moore worked some with the third-stringers. It was interesting perhaps only to me because I recall that Devlin has a reputation for being among coach Joe Philbin's favorite players.

I'm not saying Devlin is challenging Moore for the backup role. Moore's experienced, his ability to enter a game and win it (against the Jets last year) and his salary preclude such a sudden shift to Devlin. But it was interesting to see. Moore, by the way, had a good day of practice and was probably the best QB on the field today.

Yes, it is available

The read option is in the playbook. All I'm saying on that.

Talking RBs

Although Lamar Miller is the presumed starting running back, I was told today to assume nothing about that. Yes, Miller is getting the first-team snaps. But Daniel Thomas is also getting some of those. And as a club source told me, the team believes Thomas is ready for a big season if he can stay healthy. Yes, big if, I know. Just sharing what I'm told.

Tannehill-Wallace update

My column in today's newspaper examined the need for quarterback Ryan Tannehill and Mike Wallace to get in synch so that Miami's popgun offense of a year ago might show more explosiveness. Check the column to see what the players said about their work on Day One.

Today, I hate to report, we're still looking for the long TD bomb from the QB to the deep threat receiver. Has yet to happen. Tannehill and Wallace did connect on three sideline out routes. There was even a slant pass completed. But the bomb?

Not yet.

Kicking competition

Today was Caleb Sturgis day as the Dolphins apparently are alternating kicking days between he and Dan Carpenter. Today, Sturgis got only three attempts. He made two but missed on a 47-yarder.

[NOTE: The Dolphins do not allow updates to the blog during the major parts of practice thus I update on a real-time basis on twitter. So if you're looking for the latest on what is happening at practice, follow me on twitter @ArmandoSalguero].

Kris, how can you POSSIBLY be in so much denial after your chat buddy Dashi rampaged and polluted the blog with utter lewd and vile posts yesterday???

You saw it. You ignore it as though he was some innocent angel.

You have no balls to call out anything your favorite buddies do no matter how gross and unacceptable it is.

You sir are a fraud.

How come the Pats never have to play in the crappy HOF game and we do?

The only thing that can come out of the HOF game is failure.
We have everything to lose and nothing to gain.
Some examples:
1. Tanne hits Wallace on multiple bombs. Great but it doesn't count.
2. Tanne underthrows Wallace on multiple bombs and gets picked twice. Every headline will question Tanne.
3. Martin handles the Dallas rush with ease. Great but it doesn't count.
4. Martin dislocates knee out for season. For what?

So you see we have nothing to gain and everything to lose by playing in the crappy HOF game.

ETF,

Injuries are going to happen no matter what. The extra game is good because it DOES matter to some people currently on our roster. Mainly those guys fighting for a spot. There is always talent buried on the depth chart of every team praying for reps. Maybe we see someone step up and deliver a big play in the game and that gives the coaches a reason to give him some reps with the 1st or 2nd team and he excels there too!

You just never know.

Feel free to voice your opinions and defend them. This is NOT a forum for attacking others and using lewd language or profanities.

Consider this the preseason reminder of the old rules. If anyone breaks those rules, you'll be banned. Simple as that.

Armando has spoken. Did you hear that trolls who always accuse everyone else of being trolls, when you yourselves are the greatest blog trolls?

Says the "GUY" that uses(and I quote): "lewd language or profanities" in his most commonly used sign in name/alias. According to your "Gentle Reminder" at 2:41 Armando, YG's sign in name ALONE should have him banned.

This is not a personal attack Armando, but come on now. The ONE GUY causing 99.9% of the problems here is using a childishly disgusting sign in alias containing both.

I'm no Boy Scout when replying SPECIFICALLY to YG(ALL the rest of my posts to the regulars are neither lewd nor profane). The point being, YG's current alias breaks the rules you JUST reminded us of Right Off The Bat. If his sign in aliases are this bad Armando, I'm sure you can imagine the content of his posts.

Knowing that you won't make everyone happy by banning YG Armando, can you at least ban his childish and disgusting Alias..........?

Thank You!!!!

Odin,

You have some nerve bro. You have polluted this blog almost daily with lewd talk. I understand, it's ok for you and your boyfriend to do it, but you attack everyone else.

You are just as big a two faced hypocrite as Kriss...

Thanks for the reminder Armando, it's sad it has to be said but you jumped right on the feedback you got. Thanks again!

..The Lb's name was Micah Johnson. Everyone on the blog(especially myself..He was a hero for a few weeks)was fired up on this guy. Especially after that Tampa game(preseason. He was a hard hitting run stuffer. Problam was he was usually out of position, and proved to be to slow vs. the number 1's when he got his shot. But was he exciting v the 2's and 3's....

I wonder what happened to him?

DD, I watched the rerun marathon of last years Hard Knocks yesterday. Remember 7-11, man the hype machine was up on that guy. Reality hit against the number 1 defense.

4. Martin dislocates knee out for season. For what?

So you see we have nothing to gain and everything to lose by playing in the crappy HOF game.

Posted by: ExposingTheFraud | July 22, 2013 at 06:38 PM

Hey but Martin (or any one else) play the full game? so the probabilities of an injures are few, Don't you think.

The injuries just happen may be in that game may be not.

What is there to be gained from playing an extra pre-Season Game? Nothing except experience.

Notice not a single word from Odin or Kris about dashi's lewd and vile posting yesterday.

Not a word.

Gutless.

There will be no football season this year because of the comet that will hit Earth.

jeje, how you post before my post?

Me? I don't know. Hi Oscar, how are you doing?

Posted by: And you know it | July 22, 2013 at 07:14 PM

Ok it applies to everyone, so everyone grab a static screen name and let's talk football!

The extra game is an extra opportunity for players to get hurt, but I have to agree that it gives the players searching for a spot an extra opportunity to show what they have.

I'll agree with Kris and Odin. This blog would be SO much better if YG was gone. I'm sure Mark would say the same thing if he was here and not on his honeymoon. But you'll never do it Armando because it's all about blog hits and YG gives you the most hits by far. So it's great to make the statement but you'll never get rid of him.

So go ahead and attack me now with your multiple sign in names, YG because I couldn't care less. As Kris has pointed out numerous times to you now, this is how justify your miserable existence.

Odin,

You have some nerve bro. You have polluted this blog almost daily with lewd talk. I understand, it's ok for you and your boyfriend to do it, but you attack everyone else.

Sorry Pal, you're trying to deflect the guilt away from yourself and it's not working. That's not my fault and you should have considered this before you "Showed Your Ass", Attacked EVERYONE and just really trashed the place.

I BEG of you, I'll PLEAD for you too show us all just ONE Lewd or Profane post by me - TOO ANYONE, other than our "Resident Problem Child".

I attack everyone........? You are so far out in left field, you don't even deserve a response.

Please identify just **ONE REGULAR** that I was lewd or profane with! You can't do it. Ask any of them, other than "Monkey **BOY** of course. Ask any regular how I've interacted with them and I'll bet money they tell you "Polite and Courteous".

Now, PLEASE, for the GOOD of the BLOG, just GO AWAY with your Garbage Fantasies.........OK.......?

PLEASE..........?

YG/YG4L/LOL/DB/MILLON OHTER NAMES HAS NO HONOR.

Yeah, I have noticed the same thing. Whenever there's a practice going on there are practically no posters here besides myself.

ODIN,WHERE ARE YOU GOING TO DINNER TONITE,MCDONALDS OR WENDYS?

(BUFFET OF KNOWLEDGE)

Odin conveniently avoids yet again the lewd and vile posting of his best bud yesterday. Nary a contrary word about that.

Craig M too.

Hostile Kris too.

Fine. You all can't man up. You have excuses...but your selective reasoning is not enough to deny you are are in denial.

3 little mice won't change what we all see.

OPSCAR,DO YU HAVE INTERNET IN YOUR COFFIN??????

(BUFFET OF KNOWLEDGE)

I agree with Craig M. Armando will never be able to get rid of YG, et al, because they are an integral part of what he knows of. He deletes YG, he deletes himself.

Well, the one thing we know is Ireland cant draft a QB to save his life. Henne, White and Tannehill all stunk.

Hey Odin and Craig M, just let it go. Armando has chimed in and I think he will actively moderate the blog. The warning has been made so no point belaboring YG being a/the problem. Lets give him the opportunity to clean up his act, let everyone reciprocate, and just move on.

I doubt the hit count on here outweighs the linkage to the profane comments and the Miami Herald and his blog. It reflects poorly on Armando if it continues, so I don't foresee it continuing.

If Armando deletes anyone it should be Odin. He's disgusting.

The extra preseason game just puts more money in cheapskate Ross's pockets.

Ross doesnt care if the extra game causes more injuries as long as it pays him extra money.

What are you basing that off of JohnWPB, I'm interested in hearing a more detailed take on your opinion than a one liner.

Tannehill Jersey sales skyrocket past T. Brady to the sixth best selling in the NFL.

Lets all email Armando to delete Odin and get rid of him for good.

OK, Darkoak.

Nah Shula72 he needs to be given the chance to move on from the smack talk just like everyone else. Move on and let Odin change his ways, I'm sure he will.

btw, why would I need Internet after I'm dead? For that matter a coffin? I'm sure I won't need them by that Time.

Fine. You all can't man up. You have excuses...but your selective reasoning is not enough to deny you are are in denial.

3 little mice won't change what we all see.

=================================================

I'll step up and insert myself into ..........someone elses business.

I didn't see Kris, Craig, Mark or Dashi use any language that wasn't first thrown at them by our "Resident Problem Child".

He starts crap with everyone in any number of ways, they've simply responded in kind.

Find any instances where any of us have attacked or used the kind of language and/or "Dirty" tactics that YG routinely employs. This of course is in reference to ANYONE ELSE, BESIDES our Little Problem Child.

YOU simply can't do it, because **WE DON'T DO IT"!

Plain and Simple. So, one more time, PLEASE go away with your Garbage Fantasies! You........or I mean YG.......is the ONLY ONE that has PROBLEMS with EVERYONE and that's because he brings it on himself.

Buh Bye........Now!!!!

OK Odin you have said your peace, no point getting into it with him or the more abrasive trolls any more. It all falls under what needs to go, however justified it seems, doesn't make it OK anymore. Engaging in flame wars doesn't get anywhere, and people that don't have the integrity to admit when they are wrong aren't worth your time.

Let's not put an unfair standard on Dion. If you are expecting him to wak out on the field and immediately terrorize offenses and have a 10+ sack rookie season, that is just not very realisitic.

Judge him by his overall performance and what his potential looks like towards the end of the season.

It is a rare, rare rookie that starts off in his Prime.

He's already behind in regards to coaching at the NFL level and having his strength up to snuff (hard to work out that arm with shoulder injury recovery).

Marino may have been the only dolphin ever to reach his prime by his second season. Maybe even Jake Long.

Let's be realistic.

Darkoak,

Respectfully I think you're kidding yourself. I've seen this idle threats before and nothing ever gets done. Why? Because it's not Armando's job to babysit and he relies on the hits. He gets that from YG and at the end of the day that's more important than the lack of quality on the blog. At the end of the day the Herald cares more about quantity over quality, We've all seen that over and over gain on here.

Count me in as someone fed up with that guys antics. And I find it HILARIOUS that the second after Armando posted warning people about lewd language, that guy posted using his utterly disgusting sign in name. And then he goes on and on trying to deflect and blame Dashi and or Odin when they have never attacked or swore at one poster who wasn't this guy. He just brings out the best in all of us. I mean what do you expect guy? You attack people on a daily basis with profanity and multiple names and when they attack back you cry foul? Either you know exactly what is going on or you're ridiculously stupid. Either way everyone is on to you, please leave.

Ireland was looking ahead when he traded up for Dion. The guy is a freak of nature. Wake may have only 2 or 3 prime seasons left. By then Dion should be a force. Ireland is looking to keep the mojo rolling, not build a flash in the pan team.

Formula to make playoffs

Colts, must win

Must win both division games after bye week

Falcons Saints can be split

As well as Pitt Cincinatti

Four blind mice, four blind mice, see how they run, see how they run.

They would defend Hitler if he was part of their tiny CJ club.

Hey you have to set a baseline for what decent behavior is and that comes from taking away the argument that it is everyone else. Remove that argument on mass by the regulars and then the likelyhood that an argument to remove the offensive trolls has more leverage.

It's easy for all the regulars to not take part in the flame warring anymore, can the trolls?

Odinseye it's all a game to him and it seems Armando is in on it too right? He says no foul language or you will be banned. Then the very next post is this same guy using that sign in name and Armando does nothing.

It's just a big joke to him it seems. The warnings are useless and full of doo doo. If he was serious that guy would have been banned or there would have been a registration implemented like we have all requested. Just a huge joke on all of us. The only thing left is to ignore him and hope everyone does the same because Armando will not be taking care of this problem and that's really obvious. Peace

Darkoak, great post. Goodnight all

I see nobody is ready to move back on to football.

G'nite.

Woodshed mentioned the blog should police itself which is very true. As none of us wield a ban hammer we can only do that by setting a standard of treating each other with respect and not getting into the juvenile troll games that get played.

I choose to try to work toward making the blog better and don't see apathy as being an option going forward.

This is NOT a forum for attacking others and using lewd language or profanities.

I'd completely missed this post by Mando but as one keen observer already noted what's the point your trying to make when you already have a poster whose sign in name is profane to begin with and appears on every blog you post no less than 100 times a day???

LOVE FAKING 17-0-IN-YUR-ASS!

Analyze it! It's a male populated blog and this sign in name to me sounds sounds sort of like him saying he's punking the ohters here! I could be wrong but since 1st seeing the sign in found it disgusting and later couldn't believe it was a regular till I realized which one given that A S S CLOWN never could accept when he was wrong before and always resorted to personal attacks even when he kept it to another particular name his alienation from civil conversation or debate his own doing!

I've had differences of opinions on this blog related to Football and other topics that have gotten heated and gone the profanity route before. I think everybody has (odin remember Seminole Sam) and I can respect that (I'm not a Mormon) I believe the feeling from the others mutual given were all grown men and have a thick enough skin.

The line gets crossed when it becomes personal attacks at ones family or heritage ect... You Mr. Salguero know this well given your exchange with the Vietnam Vet who offended you before your comments which nearly cost you your Employment / Livelyhood. I by the way was on your side and could after reading the exchange see how your buttons were pushed there is a line and limit you don't cross.

Because it's not Armando's job to babysit and he relies on the hits. He gets that from YG and at the end of the day that's more important than the lack of quality on the blog. At the end of the day the Herald cares more about quantity over quality, We've all seen that over and over gain on here.

You right on the money so to speak!

Crap team = Crap blog

Fin4life,

You're one of the most level-headed guys on here. It's very clear from your comments that YG has pushed even you too far. That says a lot.

Phins78 is dead right. It's all a big joke an unfortunately the joke's on us. If Amando was really serious about cleaning up the blog YG would be gone. So it's just more idle threats. Armando makes those comments and then YG laughs in his face. That's what this has become. So don't hold your breath fellas.

I will follow what Darkoak has said who seems to be a mature not impulsive guy. But, at least from me, one last chance to clear children from here.

Take a step back and look at YOURSELVES!

You've all been a bunch of GOSSIP QUEENS for hours now!

If this trival nonsense hits you all that hard YOU HAVE NO LIVES!

Why even come here to bicker about what amounts to something of the severity of a teenage girl breaking a fingernail????????

Engaging in flame wars doesn't get anywhere, and people that don't have the integrity to admit when they are wrong aren't worth your time.

I'll honestly give it a shot. It get tougher each time though. I think that's the most difficult part for most of us.

Yeah, sure, we agree to let it go. But hardly any time passes at all and the Problem Child is right back at it.

It's supposed to be a Two Way Street. When we're the only ones making an effort, it gets old fast. Just saying........

But I hear you Darkoak and in the spirit of hoping things improve, I'll give it my best shot ;)

Well from what I have learned is being pro-active gets results. Like anything I doubt very much the Miami Herald administration would allow what has been going on if they knew how it negatively affects their search results. Search engine optimization is a field that is only really explored from a marketing standpoint, but something like what has been posted here in the past can come up in a search with Miami Herald as the tags. I doubt calling some one a multiple used prophylactic is the type of thing the paper wants appearing beside their business.

Email Armando to ban Odin.
