Dolphins Tuesday practice: In pads for first time

The Dolphins brought out the football gear today as there was some, but not a lot, of contact for the first time this training camp.

Contact or no, this much is clear:

The Dolphins defense -- a unit with two new starting cornerbacks, two new starting linebackers and a new starting defensive end -- is way, way, way further along than the offense. Indeed, defensive tackle Jared Odrick said the defense's goal is to lead the NFL in sacks and be a Top 5 defense and the way they looked today, one shouldn't doubt that is attainable.

On the other hand, the offense ...

Oy.

Not good.

Put it this way, the first play of the first team drill in front of the fans who came to watch practice was supposed to be a run left but quarterback Ryan Tannehill tripped over an offensive lineman's feet and fell down.

It wasn't a good day for Tannehill. He threw an interception to Chris Clemons in team drills. And he threw an interception to Dannell Ellerbe in seven-on-seven work. He seemed to be holding the ball a bit. Yes, he completed a beautiful pass to Charles Clay down the seam despite good coverage by Phillip Wheeler. And yes, he did have a 30-yard completion to Mike Wallace on a broken coverage by the secondary.

But otherwise, Matt Moore was the superior quarterback today. Moore, by the way, also threw an interception -- which Jimmy Wilson collected.

"I told the team I thought for our first day in pads we had a very productive practice," coach Joe Philbin said. "Obviously, we have stopping the run on defense. We had a good team run period. I was glad to see we had some takeaways there on defense."

Understand that bad news on offense is good news on defense. So when the Dolphins worked inside blitzes from linebackers Ellerbe and Wheeler that would have collected multiple sacks on Tannehill and Moore, Philbin viewed it as both good ... and somewhat distressing.

"It's good we got in there," Philbin said. "Conversely, you don't like to see two guys running free up in the A-gap."

You don't like to see the offensive line not getting in synch. And that was the case today. Jonathan Martin continues to lose the battle against Olivier Vernon. The interior offensive line did mostly manage a stalemate against Paul Soliai and Randy Starks and Jared Odrick.

But stalemates are not great for the offense but very good for the defense.

When Tannehill connected today it was mostly to backs out of the backfield or tight end Dustin Keller or receiver Brandon Gibson short across the middle. I predict either Keller or Gibson will lead the team in receptions this year. It makes sense. Both are vets. Both make themselves available to the QB. Their patterns are easy ones to complete.

The best news out of today's practice is that rookie first-round pick Dion Jordan is on track to be full go in practice perhaps Wednesday but almost certainly the weekend after the players get Thursday off.

Jordan, recovering from shoulder surgery, was in pads like everyone else today. He didn't participate in any major contact work. He didn't participate in team drills or live contact. But he is clearly progressing and concerns his injury will linger are unfounded.

"We're teaching him the system, getting him acclimated to the schemes, concepts, teaching of that and then the fundamentals," Philbin said.

Philbin diminished the importance of the time Jordan missed during the offseason and the first couple of days of training camp. (I wonder if veterans who would love to miss minicamps would point the coach to his own words).

"He sat in the classroom. he's watched all the practice film and the correction. Obviously there has to be a point in time when he's got to do it for himself and feel it for himself and make a couple of mistakes and learn from them and move forward as a player."

Jordan said he's not worried about the shoulder injury.

"I'm trying to put it beind me, no sling or anything," he said. "The next step is getting out there and doing more live drills."

The step after Jordan is fully immersed is starting a competition with second-year veteran Olivier Vernon. Right now, Vernon is killing it. He has easly gotten the better of Martin at least once in each practice on pass-rushes. He is, in my opinion, much better than the player I saw last year.

Jordan is going to have to work very hard to take snaps away from Vernon.

"He's getting off on the snap count very, very well," Philbin said of Vernon. "He's got good leverage. I was down at the one-on-ones and he showed a nice spin move. He's doing some good things. He really is."

While Vernon is progressing, Jordan is obviously going through all the usual rookie issues. One of those is dealing with Paul Soliai, who had his annual hairdressing of the rookies Monday night. All of them along the defensive line are now wearing terrible color as part of their hairstyle.Dionjordan

"It's part of being a rookie. But I told him I'm a good vet," Soliai said of his conversation with Jordan. "I'm not going to have him do it the whole preseason. He's just got to wear it for two weeks starting today. I told him after that you can do whatever you want to do."

[NOTE: Come back in a bit for more practice highlights.]

Why does YG always talk to himself?

That Mark character, that was him trying to snake his way back to the good graces of this blog. Here is a hint everyone. When someone comes on here just posting more negative stuff about the fins than Armando Salguero, it is usually YG. Notice he is usually quick to agree with himself.

I prefer that though over his constant desecration of this blog.

YG is so in denial and just plain looney. That he won't go back to his sign in name YG. That is the only thing he doesn't flop on. How crazy do you have to be to think that just because you won't use your old name we will forget all the crazy stuff you say and do.

For someone who says that they lived thru the 60's and 70's. How come you act like a 5 year old?

Is it Dementia?

Is it Alzheimer's?

Lack of Social Interaction?

Please advise, because I would hate to end up like that at the end of my life. I wouldn't wish your life on anyone YG. Not even on my worst enemy.

May God bless you before you die. So you can find clarity and get rid of all the Negativity you live with.

"If you propose to speak, always ask yourself, is it true, is it necessary, is it kind?"

"Happiness does not depend on what you have or who you are, it solely relies on what you think"

Maybe this can enlighten you. Cause you need it. Open up your mind to positive thinking, maybe you won't be so mad and hostile all the time.

I'm getting a little worried about Tannehill.

Kristina never responded.

m m team mvp.

if tannehenne had any ballz he'd step aside and say i can't do this qb thing "that's y i was a wr",and let m m take over.
lol

It's the second day of practice, little early to worry. Defense usually can click faster than an offense, lets not forget this was already a good defense that got some serious upgrades.

Keep the info coming, actually football news....

sophmore slump = he " tannehenne " never was a freshman.
lol

yeap, heard the same lame excuses over and over and over and over and again now.

Last Year Was Dumb, This Year Is Straight Insane. Your Cries For Matt Moore. Give It A Break.

What Is Next? Draft Barkley? Yeah, I Know He Plays For The Eagles, But Your Dumbasz Might Still Want To Draft Him.

lmao again.

KEEP THE INFO COMING ARMANDO!!!

Please don't worry about Tannehill or the offense, its common knowledge the defense looks better earlier in camp than the offense. I'm not worried about the offense as whole so much as the offensive gelling and especially the progress of Jonathon Martin at let tackle. If nothing else we are going to have one hell of a defense for sure.

"It wasn't a good day for Tannehill. He threw an interception to Chris Clemons in team drills. And he threw an interception to Dannell Ellerbe in seven-on-seven work."

Can we say Chad Henne 2.0?

Geeeez!!!!! First day of practice in pads and we are already making predictions about the Tight Ends having a great year, saying Tannehill can only make the "easy" throws.
Anyone who knows football or has worn a jockstrap before knows that the defense will always be ahead in the beginning of camp, their roles are far simpler as the offense is as everything is based on timing...it's the first practice!

"It wasn't a good day for Tannehill. He threw an interception to Chris Clemons in team drills. And he threw an interception to Dannell Ellerbe in seven-on-seven work. He seemed to be holding the ball a bit. Yes, he completed a beautiful pass to Charles Clay down the seam despite good coverage by Phillip Wheeler. And yes, he did have a 30-yard completion to Mike Wallace on a broken coverage by the secondary."

Look How Positive The Negative Sounds, And How Negative The Positive Sounds.

Yes, He.. Yes, He...

If Mando Is Objective He Needs To Express Himself Better So He Doesn't Sound So Condescending.

If TsnneHenne has a sophomore slump we're looking at 1-15 again!

Sean smith has been killing it with the chiefs. The added him and dunta Robinson to a secondary with 2 pro bowlers. The chiefs writers are saying they have the best secondary the nfl has seen in years. I expect the chiefs to join us as wildcard playoff teams this season replacing Indy and cincy

Bench Tanny Start Moore!!!!!

Tanne has to improve his deep ball. I think our d will be great as long as we get solid corner play opposite grimes. With Wallace on the outside a few big plays will win us a lot of games. Moore throws a great deep ball but tanne isn't accurate with his. Tanne is much more gifted but we just need a few big plays and the d can handle the rest

Dear Mr. Ross:

Please sell the team.

Thank you.

Not a surprise at all the defense donated the offense in the first practice. If you read any story about any team, NFL or College, it works out this was 90% of the time. It's more difficult for the offense to get in sync than the defense. It's all timing on offense along with the QB trusting his guys. Defensively, it's know your assignments and beat your guy.

I won't be concerned unless they're still having this issue 2 weeks from now

Csn Tannehill slump any more then he did last year? He was ranked 30th for cryin out loud.

I was worried about our corners but Grimes seems to be in good form. The defense sounds very promising indeed now.

As for the offense, if Moore is the better QB we need to start him. Tannehill is increasingly sounding like he's not the guy. As long as Ireland is there Tannehill will start, but it could cost us years waiting for a mediocre QB to be something more than he actually is.

You Repeat The Same Thing Everyday.

The Funny Thing Is It Use To Be Irritating. Now, I Just Remind Myself. The Guy Has Serious Mental Problems.

You Need The Blog Just To Function. Part Of Being A Sociopath, I Guess.

Dear Mr. Ross:
Please sell the team.
Thank you.

Or at the very least FIRE IRElAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tanne problems, holds the ball too long, locks on one wr too many times, not accurate with the deep ball.

Please stop all of this criticism of Ryan Tannehill. He was hand picked by Jeff Ireland. With a few more years to figure out the "speed" of NFL games, it will all slow down for him and he will be fine. Just a few more years of losses, and then, the master plan of Jeff Ireland will become clear. For now, with the killer schedule of the Dolphins, any record better than 2-14 should be considered a validation of Jeff Ireland's efforts.

If the offense is tearing up the defense, you all would be crying about the defensive changes and calling for Irelands head! Let the practices happen, because the negative Nancy's (media) will mostly report the negative stuff. Besides, if the defense is going to be a top five defense as some players have proclaimed, then it must be hard practicing against them, right? The preseason games will be the barometer as to where the offense stands.

No Jay, Tannehill was the 7th rankked QB in deep ball completion.

GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT!

If Moore starts the season then I give the Dolphins a good chance for playoffs, Im sorry RT rooters, Moore was better last yr and he's better this yr. Why do you think Ireland signed him to a good contract?

Looks like Jordan will be spending a good deal of time on the bench. Thanks Irescum.

Tannehill was ranked lower then Henne EVER was. YIKES!

lol

Is Gillislee On The Team?

Haven't Heard Anything On Him Since The Draft. He Should Work On Kick Returns If He Plans On Making The Team.

L.Miller Just Got Pulled Away From That So He Can Only Concentrate At RB. A Spot Opened Up And For A Rookie Drafted Low The Easiest Way To Make The Team Is Thru Special Teams.

Thigpen Is Solidifying His Spot As The #3 RB/Returner. And From What I Have Read D.Thomas Is The 3rd Down Back. That Leaves 1 Roster Spot For 3 Guys Battling To Make The Team. My Money Is On J.Gray To Be Our #4 RB.

No, Tannehill was ranked 3rd in keeping his shoelaces tied.

GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT!

since '99
it's the same qb talk.
lol

And Of Course Moore Looks Superior He Is Throwing To 3rd And 4th Team.

How Do You Want Moore To Replace T-Hill When Moore Is Getting Beaten Out By Devlin For The #2 Spot.

Oh, Mando Forgot To Tell You Moore Isn't Even The #2 QB On The Roster At Camp Right Now.

Picked Off By J.Wilson. J.Wilson Isn't Running With The 2nd Team Anymore. He Is 3rd Team. Sometimes 4th.

"Sean smith has been killing it with the chiefs"

Jay, Smith always looks great in preseason. If he turns it around good for him, just wasn't working out with the dolphins.

Ross and Ireland keep shoveling you pathetic Dolphins fans the manure and you keep eating it.
LMAO@U Homers.

Very impressed from what I'm hearing about the "D" J.Martin getting manhandled by O.V.&Wake and Grimes&Marshall have M.Wallace on lock down !! Tannehill I hear looks alright, too bad he hasn't hit on a deep pass yet. He's in his Captain Check down routine of no fault of his on M.Wallace. The kid from Florida is looking good cause he can pick up the blitz and pass block !! And both tackles are getting their a**** kicked by our D.Linemen !! Turnovers will determine their fate, both creating and more importantly recovering them will either make or break this team period !!

I think there's a good chance Tanny will be benched near the bye week. And there's nothing wrong with playing Moore and bringing Tanny back after a year or 2.

not surprised.
90% of the teams cast offs turn all pro somewhere else.

Letting Sean Smith, Karlos Dansby, Jake Long, Brandon Marshall and Reggie Bush go was a HUGE BOTCH!

speaking of rinse and repeat/its draft the supposed promising qb ,then when they stink up the field its qb is not progressing due to no talent around him,and then we get more talent and qb still stinks up the field and then we wait longer and have paitence while qb still stinks up the field and then the f/office owns up to its mistake and (reaches)drafts another supposed promising qb.im not saying much becuase we all no its early still.if you look at last year all the all the opposing defenses hed to do was sit down on the short and med range routes as tanne accuarcy issuescontinued to be very clear specifically the long ball hence the 90 play touchdown drives and several times hartline running all by himself and being over or under thrown.which reminds me of well(dramitic pause) chad henne.out of all the good qbs drafted last year we were the ones who drafted todd blackledge.ugh miami's luck just plain terrible.

This offense will be okay, they'll score about 22.ppg and give up about 13.ppg if that's the case then 9-7-10-6 is very possible !! And for you delusional fools who hate on Tannehill and support M.Moore, how come Moore couldn't get a starting gig elsewhere ? Cause he's a back up nothing more !! Let #17 continue to grow into a good Q.B. please stupid a** Dolphinsfans geez !!

That's the big dilemma with Tannehil we saw coming. The guy has a gunslinger mentality just like Favre had and it would go against his nature to try to make him a Game manager, methodical QB. At the same time if you let him loose and take all his shots we are going to have turnovers. And the guy is x100 more intelligent than Brett was. Good luck on that one, Joe.

If reports are correct, Matt Moore is thoroughly outplaying Tannehill so far. Expect Matt Moore to wrestle away the starting QB job sometime in the near future.

sorry for type'o s didnt proof read//

I can see how Mando is making enough jabs in his writing and on the radio to create a QB controversy. The media creates its own stories.

It is the third practice of the summer for crying out loud.

Tannehill is fine what mando didn't say is how tanny was on fire the first part of practice he had two ints but so did Matt and pat i don't know what mando is watching but i know what i saw and yes he and Keller hook up deep every practice by the way yesterday the offense dominated the D wow tannys first int of TC and the sky is falling get real

Lets stop kidding ourselves. This is a crap team and has been for 5 years. Nothing is going to change while Ross-Ireland are calling the shots. Just an incompetent FO.

Just because Moore is a backup doesn't make him worse than Tannehill. Tannehill looks like a midrange QB right now. He doesn't look like a guy in the league of other young promising QB's...he just looks OK, and that's not good enough to unconditionally start him.

Rebuild mode is over; it's time to start trying to win, and that means you play the guy that is going to give you the best chance to win. If that happens to be Moore, then I hope the Dolphins go with him.

On yeah for sure. He completes what 50% on a good day and runs around behind the LOS taking sacks and fumbling. But he does throw a pretty deep ball.

Shouldn't you be more concerned about Sanchez and Geno Smith's QB battle?

Tanny was connecting with Wallace all day and hit Wallace in stride for a long TD

From all I'm reading on here, with the same reasoning, I think we should get rid of Cam Wake. I haven't read one single thing about him getting close to sacking the QB or putting pressure on him. He must be mediocre....according to y'all.

I throw batteries at frogs.

"Lets stop kidding ourselves. This is a crap team and has been for 5 years. Nothing is going to change while Ross-Ireland are calling the shots. Just an incompetent FO."

Wow. Exact same thing I used to read when Huizenga owned the team. Deja-Vu? Will anyone be happy with the owner?

Start Moore - Trade Tanne - Then bring back Chad Henne next year

It's funny, if you read the Palm Beach Post article it claims Tannehill and Wallace had a solid day working together.

Either way, I don't think today's results tell a lot. When you have new receivers and your matching up against a new defense mistakes will be made. The QB is still trying to figure out who he can trust in what situation.

That #32 looks very good running the ball.
