Maurkice Pouncey, Steelers give Dolphins a lesson

On the first day of training camp one of the housecleaning issues that should have been properly handled was putting the "Free Hernandez" issue in the rear view mirror for Mike Pouncey.

The Dolphins fumbled badly in the attempt.

After an internal debate on how to handle the issue of Pouncey wearing a cap that read "Free Hernandez" during his and brother Maurkice's birthday bash at a South Beach nightclub, the Dolphins decided not addressing the topic and definitely not apologizing for any lack of sensitivity was the best way to approach it.

Coach Joe Philbin wouldn't discuss it publicly other than to say he wants players doing the right thing. Pouncey did not address it in his first availability, saying he was only prepared to talk football.

This approach came after a debate that had multiple people within the organization saying Pouncey should apologize for the cap that asked for the release of jailed and accused murderer Aaron Heranandez, a former roommate of the Pouncey twins at the University of Florida.

But what set the Dolphins approach apart was its contrast to how the Pittsburgh Steelers handled the situation with Maurkice Pouncey, the starting center in Pittsburgh who apologized almost immediately.

Well, apparently the reason Mike Pouncey didn't apologize or even address the issue is because the Dolphins wouldn't allow him. Unlike the Steelers, who wanted the situation handled quickly, the Dolphins took the bunker mentality approach.

Even when Mike Pouncey felt bad about the situation.

"I talked to Mike, and his team handled this situation a lot different than (the Steelers) did,” Maurkice Pouncey told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “I'm sure Mike wanted to apologize, but that's how they handled it.”

So Pouncey wanted to apologize but the Dolphins prevented him. And, according to sources, Pouncey wasn't the only one who wanted this issue handled differently. I'm told several people within the organization wanted to have Pouncey apologize and let the issue simply die right there.

Those folks obvioulsy lost the argument. The winner of the argument?

Philbin.

He wanted the bunker approach and got it.

I assume the coach figured not saying anything and definitely not apologizing would make the issue go away quicker. He was wrong. It makes the issue linger because the question is still out there, new details now arise from Maurkice that Mike wanted to apologize, and there's the whole idea of the coach going against owner Stephen Ross's stated approach on how the club is going to be run.

You'll remember in March of 2012, Ross said that to the extent it didn't hurt any competitive edge, his team would be run in an open and transparent manner. He said the team had to emerge from "the dungeon" of the past tight-lipped football administrations.

He made this proclamation after hosting his football people -- including Philbin -- at his home in Palm Beach the day before and giving them marching orders about his new way of doing business.

Well, that is not how the Dolphins approached this. And the fact the Steelers, an far more successful and respected organization, handled the same issue in a vastly different manner makes the Dolphins look worse.

By the way, how does Mike Pouncey feel today? I mean really?

He's an open guy. He speaks his mind obviously. But he was clearly told to shut it down and not apologize for asking the release of an accused murderer. He feels he made a mistake, according to his brother, but the club won't let him make amends? You think he appreciates not getting that off his record, so to speak?

An apology makes it go away. Claming up makes it linger. Philbin, a second-year coach, apparently doesn't understand this. The Pittsburgh Steelers do. Maurkice Pouncey, a third-year player, does.

“I think manning up to the things you do is always important for any man with any position in life,” Maurkice Pouncey said. "I think I came out here and did that in front of everybody. I think it'll mean lot to everybody in Pittsburgh and all around  the country."

Except in Miami. Where Mike Pouncey was stifled.

Oscar!!!
Why so low on the Phins this week? T-Sizzle connecting with Wallace deep (and all over the field) and Armando cowers in his closet to write trash...
OL putting up good battles today as well...
RBs looking good...
Defense we know looks to enter beast mode...
The arrow is pointing up!!!

Oscar,

Are you also seeking membership in the Queens of the Round Table Club? No Problem:

Happy to oblige sir.....

It is very important to place a Player in his right position to excel. Sparano was not very good at this. Philbin seems he is.

Armando posts this garbage blog because he's very unhappy with the behavior of the Queens of the Round Table here:

You are not fooling anyone buddy...we know your face is as old and tired as your writing...

It is the coaches giving others snaps at center with the first team.

You know, it's called beiing prepared for any stiuation. Pouncey has missed some games to injury.

Definite proof everyone here isn't stupid!

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Mike Pouncey went to UF from 2007-2010 as a Fr. actually started 4 games at DE (flashing his athleticism and explosion) played from Soph. Yr. till Jr. Yr. at Guard before moving his Sr. Yr. to Center.

He NEVER missed a start due to injury! I suggest YG Ahhh I mean you people start to check your facts before posting seriously!

In NFL Mike Pouncey has been active for 32 games in career, he's started and played in all of them!

Displayed toughness playing through a slight injury to his Knee in 2012 extent of which not reported in Season.

If you youtube him at RG (were he played at UF most of career) you'll see his immense athletic ability lead blocking for his RB's down field from the 1st wave into the D-Backfield on alot of highlight reels (showing he could play either side as Pro)

He's proven at Center for us the ability to pull in front of the RB's around LT (Didn't you people remember him blocking all the way to the endzone for Bush from about 20 Yards out last Season were he makes the play given Long was on his keester) How many Centers in the NFL you think have the Guard like ability to make that type of play??

He's entrenched himself at Center since his rookie campaign out of need and is playing at a very high level, there's no doubt about it but me I see a guy who could be the best pulling Guard the Fins have had since Larry Little as well, it was JMHO back when drafted given what I saw in the Gators Champ. run IN 09.

By the way odin brought up the possibility of Samuda getting his shot at Center with Pouncey out at Guard 1st (so nice call on an under the radar player nobody outside of you reaaly mentioned last Season) and if Samuda he can handle it then I think were more athletic and powerful in the run game for it!

jus havin fun.

i gots to go now.

I cant take any guy named Armando seriously

I went to high school with a guy named Armando Cisneros. One of the coolest guys I've ever known.

Shula would've traded Pouncey and gotten the distraction off the team.

Coach said from the beginning they would be experimenting. This is what you do this time a year. Evaluate and keep an open mind. To not give any other player reps at first team center would be irresponsible.

Coach is doing is due diligence.

No player on the whole team is better at his position than Pouncey. That is not the player you want to change position.

You don't take your #15 pick star center and replace him with a merely adqueate player. That would be contrary to success.

Moving J Martin to LT to replace Long weakens TWO positions on the OL both LT and RT.

I have no doubt Pouncey would be an excellent guard. However, an excellent center is more valuable than an excellent guard.

I would not play Tannehill or any of the starting dline in this stupid HOF game.

If the idea were merely to get Samuda reps at RG then why not leave Cogs in there at RG as well to give him the reps at RG given he hasn't played there in 4 yrs. now??? The Coaches are seeing what they have in their future at OL and if Samuda and Thomas (2 big question marks undoubtedly) can handle the LG,C Positions with the athletic Clabo over at RT then ity gives us a young powerful very athletic group with only Martin's pass blocking an issue given he can also move very well for his size, again analyze before posting!

I mean giving Samuda reps at Center.

Armando is the worst.

Let me get this right. Because Mike choose not to say something you want him to he's bad.

But the Patsies never said anything and they're OK?

He choose to back his friend regardless if he done it or not.

I respect that.

As long as the communication and exchange btw C and QB are solid you can put an avg C in between 2 really good Gs and excel.

Besides planning wedding to fiancee Savannah Brinson, King James has done quite a bit of traveling. He flew back to his hometown Akron, Ohio where he lounged by the pool with his kids and watched re-runs of "Martin" and "Family Guy." In Las Vegas, he hosted the LeBron Skills Academy (where high school and college players learn how to improve their basketball techniques) and partied at hotspots such as Tao Nightclub (with his buds, Floyd Mayweather and Young Jeezy). In Asia, he promoted B-ball overseas in Guangzhou, China (where he stayed at the W Hotel and had his own in-suite DJ) and in the Philippines. But even superstars can run into vacay snafus. Before leaving China for Manila, his private jet had some trouble taking off and was stuck on the runway for one hour. On break, LeBron also kicked back musically. He released a rap song (set to Kanye West and Jay-Z's "N***** in Paris") and chose the sountrack for NBA's 2K14.

Trying to read anything into Pouncey getting reps at RG while Samuda got reps at C. IS CLEARLY GRASPING AT STRAWS.

Sounds if someone's so desperate to be right with a dumbass post a few days ago. He will grasp at nothing to call it something.

You hear that fins4losers?

BASKETBALL STARTS OCTOBER 17TH! CANT WAIT! 3 PEAT!

more media BS

no one cares

Gotta say, i agree with the majority here this time.

It *IS* and *WAS* a dead issue until you decided to try to breath life back into it Armando.

And why does Armando bring it up?

uh, because these sensationalist news rags make money by driving people to emotional reactions in order to feed the gossip monkey that is sitting astride the back of western society.

And the easiest emotional reaction in which to drive people, nowadays, with instant mass media and spoon-fed, popularity dictated principles, is self-righteous moral indignation! Duh!

Are YOU feeling indignant Mando, because it seems like most of us here - aren't.
=)

Pouncey wanted to appologize? For what? Is he really sorry? Did one of their idiot friends have the hats and they stupidly put them on for a Kodak moment? Or do the brothers really support an alleged murderer? Guess we'll never know and is it really all that important? Probably not. It is interesting that two vets were that stupid. Teams have seminars on what not to do in public places.

BTW, 'bunker mentality' was brought to Miami by that infamous P.O.S. Bill Parcells. I would hate to think Philbin thinks this is a good policy.

Why they didn't put Cogs here or there is irrelevant. They are a second year coaching team evaluating all kinds of things.

I'd say it is one huge flying leap to even hint that a second year UDFA is going to replace one of the best centers in the league picked at #15. Every single report I've read about Pouncey from inside our outside the team has said he has been stellar.

Steelers pouncy said "I'm sure mike wanted to apologize" he didn't say it was a definate apology... also, good to see armando had extra names on this site so he can throw in a few compliments his way... what a baboon... you would think a journalist could read & understand the point to comments & sentences... you want real journalism, may I suggest phinsiders.com? The best part is these journalists communicate with us... don't waste your time with this garbage writing... HERE WE GO DOLPHINS! HERE WE GO! HERE WE GO DOLPHINS! HERE WE GO!

I am trying to think of a scenario where you wouldn't play your best center at center, especially when he is the best center on the team by far.

I can't think of one.

He's entrenched himself at Center since his rookie campaign out of need and is playing at a very high level, there's no doubt about it but me I see a guy who could be the best pulling Guard the Fins have had since Larry Little as well, it was JMHO back when drafted given what I saw in the Gators Champ. run IN 09.

Fin, I just about lost it when Sparano put Pouncey at center instead of guard. I had hoped last year Philbin would move him back his natural position where he could be one of the best if not the best guard in the NFL.

don't waste your time with this garbage writing...

Posted by: Bones | July 27, 2013 at 04:56 PM

Isn't that what you are doing? Dang are people dumb.

they were the hat,so the apology is a joke just like the steelers are a joke.philbin did the right thing by not treating the fans like idiots.we all know the apology is a farce.only steeler fans buy this garbage.armando I never understood why people were so down on you .now I do.please pack up and take the next flight north

cocoa,

How can you say Center is not his 'natural' position when he is 'naturally' doing a stellar job of it?

Just because someone else played center for much of his college years does not mean he himself is not a natural center, he has proven he is, it just means they had two natural centers and moved one to guard.

This talk of Pouncey being a more natural guard is simply POPPYCOCK, if you ask me.

The OL Is Falling Apart Without Tony Sparano.

Mando,

If you keep writing garbage posts like this one while there's real football stuff going on, then you might as well get ready for another "extended stay" vacation...a very long one!

It's about time for the Herald to give this blog to another writer anyways...

Armando you are a sad little man. Typical yellow journalist who probably never played the game.

2015, not sayin' Pouncey isn't doing a good job at center, he is. But there is a difference between good and elite. Pouncey has the ability to be elite at guard and a perennial all-pro.

So, Barry Jackson, in his column, posted that he'd heard that Jerry had been seen on crutches with his knee wrapped up in a bandage, but no brace.
Which makes me wonder if he had to have it scoped. Anyways, that's a good thing because it means he shouldn't be out very long.
If that's what happened.

I wonder if we should start a pool for when the "Fire Salguero" signs start showing up at games? Do you think it'll happen in the Pre-season? Will it make bigger headlines than the "Fire Ireland" campaign did? Will anyone even care?

**Dumb Shyt That YG Says**
--------------------------

Last night someone was insisting that Pouncey be moved over to guard.

Isn't it interesting that he is the only lineman on our team that two different coaching staffs have decided he was best at center. They experiment with the others, with Pouncey they have no doubt where he belongs.

It was Odin, Darkoak, Dashi, fin4 losers.

======================

How IRONIC-LOL!

Thanks YG for pointing out how Dashi, Darkoak, Fin4 and I were RIGHT!

And YOU........as usual........Are WRONG-LOL!

So whose the REAL Loser here "In Yur Ass"?

ROTFLMFAO - For Real!!!!

Cocoa,

Well many consider Pouncey already better than his borther. I'd say that is elite. I have yet to read anything by a coach or pundit that hasn't praised him highly. The pro bowls will come.

Pro Bowls are name recognition votes. Long has gone to the PB when he shouldh't have just on that alone.

My question is, how do you not play your best Center at Center? No way UDFA Samuda is as good as Pouncey.

odin, what is it with you and what's his soup always so frantically trying to prove someone wrong? what is this a contest here to be right all the time? do you win something by being right? are you ever wrong?

why care so much? what are you trying to gain?

2015, you have your opinion, I have mine.

Well, Armando is expert on apologies.

He's still mad because he got a spanky for blasting a reader in an email...

**More Dumb Shyt YG Says**
--------------------------

fin4llife,

If a player can excell at LG and Center, and he would clearly be the BEST center on the team, where do YOU play him?

Sorry brudda, me things Philbin and Sherman know a teeny weensy bit more than you. I TRUST their judgement. AND...Pouncey has PROVEN them correct.

Posted by: Kemosabe | July 26, 2013 at 10:40 PM
===============================================

Ironically, YG, "Mike" and "Kemosabe" spent the entire night last night embarrassing themselves.

And for the record YG, Philbin just PROVED **US CORRECT** and you........well.........you know all the dumb stuff you posted for hours on end last night, you were WRONG.......AGAIN-LOL.

Matter of fact YG, you SPECIFICALLY jumped all over my post last night. The one where I said Samuda established himself quickly and how it would be an upgrade at Guard if Pouncey **WAS** moved over and Samuda played center.

I don't want to go on and on because it will just invite more pollution from YG(Your Momma Jokes, Crack Jokes, talking about my Privates, etc, etc). But I believe in giving credit where credit is do.

We were TRYING to discuss experiments on the O-Line under a blog titled: "Jerry injured, Dolphins experimenting with OL." Ironically Fin 4 was right on the money seeing how Philbin and Co did just that with Pouncey Today.

Of course YG made the convesation impossible with all of his usual uninformed, garbage posts. He couldn't have inserted his foot deeper down his throat on this one-For REAL. Simple as that.

Sorry YG, but there's a reason you're wrong about EVERYTHING. But let me guess........you'll point your finger and blame all of US........RIGHT?

Bhwaaaaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaaaa!!!!

Thanks for the Laughs(Fvcking Loser ;)

I know Dumb-Dash, the "most important" part of that entire paragraph flew right over your tiny brain.

Yawnn.............................

Awake us when Pouncey's made a permanent move to guard. Yawnnnnnnnn...............ahhh......

How typical. Nothing like changing the argument(point)calling some names and pretending like you didn't embarrass the shyt out yourself by showing your lack of football knowledge.

Your Momma Jokes suck, your Football IQ.........Even Worse-LOL.

Just calling it like it is...............

Great...CnP time...
Time to go....

Byeee

Today's report from Henne's practice; Gabbert is suffering from the same kind of trauma that Mallett suffered when he tried to follow Henne at Michigan: Henne set the bar so high that Mallett had to travel across the continent to try and continue his career. Same thing is happening in J'ville to Gabbert:

Final Thought:

There's NO POINT in even having the discussion with him go back and read his response after my post. Dim-witted YADDA YADDA YADDA with ZERO substance to substantiate his position on the subject. He's already reverted to name calling and soon will go to discussing your privates ( seems to have a creepy fixation)or call you a Crack head and me a Recist deflecting the subject all together. He'll then wait a few days and change the story completely around to suit his argument.
