Studying the Vonta Leach situation

No, I'm not totally back yet. I still have a couple more days of vacation left. But I have some information I've shared with my followers on twitter -- you should follow me @ArmandoSalguero -- that I believe should be here as well.

Regarding Vonta Leach:

1. Today is a big day because it marks the first in which Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland is expected back at work after his vacation in, among other places, Australia. That return to work means he's able to actually talk to Leach agent Ralph Vitolo and negotiate a deal for the veteran if he's so inclined. The two have exchanged some text messages in the time both were on holiday during the past few weeks, but with training camp opening in less than a week and both sides at work, the stage is set for something to happen.

2. Is something going to happen at all? Well, the Dolphins want Leach for the right price. And Leach wants the Dolphins for the right price. (Isn't that always the case?) The Dolphins have made no secret of the fact coach Joe Philbin and offensive coordinator Mike Sherman seriously want Leach for an offense that could use some veteran leadership and also needs an upgrade at fullback. Leach wants to play in Miami because he sees the Dolphins as an up-and-coming team that has a chance to challenge for the playoffs this year, assuming everything goes well. Leach, by the way, also has a good sense of the Dolphins system. That should not be a problem.

3. So what do the sides want from each other? Well, the Dolphins don't want to spend a ton on Leach. Nobody does with fullbacks anymore. The position players there are endangered species. But for the Dolphins it means superior lead blocking and experienced pass blocking on early downs. That's important because presumed starting halfback Lamar Miller is inexperienced and could use some veteran help. It's important because any help the Dolphins can give LT Jonathan Martin on early passing downs with Leach blocking in the backfield on pass plays is good. It's important because Leach can be a stabilizing figure in the huddle. He's been there and done that. For Leach, he wants the opportunity of making one last solid contract. I've reported he wants a two- or three-year deal. He doesn't want a one-year deal because he wants some sort of stability. He likes the idea of being a leader. He likes the coaches and has a comfort level with them.

4. So what can get in the way? Well, Leach has a standing offer to return to the Ravens if he wishes. My sense is it's a low-budget offer and that's the reason he hasn't taken it. He wants to do better. But, the Ravens loom nonetheless because they are comfortable for Leach, familiar to Leach, they're defending Super Bowl champions, and they're proven. I remind everyone the Ravens have this way of swooping in at the last minute and re-signing players they value. Yes, they've lost talent this offseason due to cap constraints, but they have a way of pulling surprise moves  -- witness the Elvis Dumervil signing.

5. What does it all mean? The Dolphins have been trying to get better across the board at every position this offseason. They are clearly not thrilled with the work of Jovorskie Lane last year to the extent they can afford to offer him no training camp competition. If they sign Leach, Lane is in trouble. Leach would be the presumed starter and Lane's only chance of making the team is if Leach is a bust during camp or gets injured. Simply, Lane was inconsistent as a rookie. His weight, his knowledge of his assignments, his execution ... all inconsistent. It wasn't terrible. But the Dolphins simply want a chance to upgrade.

So we'll see what happens on this front ... See you later in the week.

Craig, we are going to Lisbon, lagos, paris, Santorini and Athens. Should be fun ..

Yo finsu, Tannehille ain't the head coach.
Vonta Leach would be a great improvement and he's more then just a FB.
I hope Ireland signs him, no time to get timid.

Everybody talks about Wallace, but Keller and Grimes were HUGE pickups for Miami...Very good moves by Ireland...

Mando, please post progress of Dion Jordan's contract talks. Is he going to sign on time?

Been waiting for one of your so-called reserve writers but none ever did. Guess they were too busy writing about ballcaps or plugging there own blogs to actually do any work.

Welcome back!!!

The mouth's wife left him. Hilarious! I'm sure she's justified too!

He probably acts at home like he does here. By that I mean:

Big mouthed, arrogant, stubborn, conceited, superior, with a reading comprehension problem.

Congrats Mark. Where are you guys off to? I'm off to Scotland in two weeks, so I'll be watching things from afar. Back just before the season starts.

DC, it's a no brainer really when it comes to Leach. Only way it doesn't happen is if he's playing the Dolphins to get a better deal from the Ravens or Giants.

Are you from Scotland? My father was from Edinburgh. I still have a lot of cousins there. You picked a nice time to go. About the only time I prefer their weather to the weather here in VA.

Agreed. It was important to get some guys in here that have been successful and have postseason experience. I would add Ellerbe to that list as well. You have to have guys that have tasted success so that we can build that winning culture up on this young team.

With that said, I hope we add Leach to that list above!

It looks like Leach's connections have paid some People here to promote him.

Looks like many here are Leaches. hehehe

To pickup on the ETF comments about double-teaming Wallace. Mark exposed that fraud by bringing up Keller. But allow me to also interject Gibson (and possibly Binns). We have big slot WRs that will be open if that happens. And if we got Leach, then add another weapon in the air. Vonta has great hands. So we have a lot more options than last year, and therein lies the problem (for opposing defenses).

Many of you have the same complaints before you even see how these new pieces will work. You have to collect the data before you can make a conclusion.

And DC who do you double him with....a LB?? Nope it will be a safety, so that means 7 in the box and opens the running game.

Craig M,
I haven't seen you posting in here for a while but I can assure you that I have not been posting every 15 seconds.
The discussion between MIT and I has been going on for a couple weeks.

Congrats to Mark on becoming an honest man and Craig for being single at the best time of year to be single.

When there are 2 RBs on the field there is no slot receiver.
That is the discussion.
If Miller can't pass protect and we need Leach also then we will be in 2 WR sets or whenever Miller comes on the field then the D will know it is a run.

regardless of whats going on in the defensive coverage, leach can block for tannehill when Martin drops the block or just flat out gets beat at the line.

If we have Leach on the field every down in a single back set then we will have our full passing game available but Leach will be the running game.

However the sentiment on this blog all offseason has been that Miller is a step up in the running game from Bush. That can only be true if Miller is on the field for as many snaps as Bush which was just about all of the snaps last season.

I'm not the idiot that let our LT, CB, RB all depart with nothing in return and then refused to replace those people in the draft.

Keller is too dangerous not account for him as a receiver. Also play action works great I'm obvious run formations. No formation is 100% obvious in today's NFL.

Keller will be covered by a LB. I'm not worried about him.

According to Kevin Coyle defense # 1 Priority is getting to the QB.

Multi talented Dion Jordan shows no set backs and

adds to a defense that finished 7th in points allowed

and #1 in the Red Zone.

Brent Grimes continues to ball hawk.

"It took years to build this defense but it's finally here".

Ok so Wallace is doubled and Keller is covered by a LB, half back draw, six in the box.

I'm not sold that Grimes will return to pro bowl form for a full season.
If he can hold up for the first 5 games that will help a lot and allow the rookie CBs to get some plays under thier belts.

Front 7 I have no complaints or criticsms about.

Most LB's can't cover Keller. He ran a 40 yd dash in the 4.5's.

Hopefully Lance Louis will be 100% when training camp begins...I don't really know the guy but if he really was Chicago's best player on their o-line that would be a huge upgrade...Time to get rid of that stiff John Jerry...

RG has been a major weakness for the Dolphins for quite some time now...

Lagos, Nigeria is the most populated city in the world now, no?

L.Miller Is The Best RB On The Team. Period. Even Pass Blocking.

That Egregious Opinion Came About So Reggie Bush Can Stay On The Field. Once Philbin Got Tired Of Reggie DWTS. He Put His RB In. L.Miller Got Redshirted Last Year. Brought Along Slow. Remember, R.Bush Promised To Gain 2000 Yes Last Season. And Philbin Gave Him His Shot.

All You Hoping For Gillislee(1 Cornball) Need To Keep This 1 Fact In Mind. L.Miller Got Drafted Higher At 20 Yrs Old Than M.Gillislee At 22. L.Miller Will Be Going Into His 2nd Pro Season And He Is Still Younger Than Gillislee. L.Miller Gained More Yards In 2 Years At UM Than M.Gillislee Gained In 4 At UF.

One Is A Prodigy At RB, The Other One Is A Good Role Player. A 3rd RB.

I never Keller mentioned in the same sentence as Gronkowski or Gonzalez.
I have heard Keller mentioned in the same sentence as Fasano.

This team is going to have to put all this together. Our fist 5 games are super tough!!!! Its going to take perfect play and coaching to avoid an 0-5 or 1-5 start. Yes it is that serious!!! Hope Ireland did what was necessary

Whichever running back can run, catch and pss block is the one that will spend the most time on the field.
Be it Miller or Thomas or Gilligan.

Really, I thought it was Mexico City.

The Fins Will Be Running 3-4 WRs Sets. On Most Plays.

We Don't Run A lot Of 2 TE Sets. Or Basic I Formation. That Was The Spo Playbook. Or Better Said The Henning Book. Or If You Want Go Root For The Pats.

Sherman Runs A No Huddle Spread WCO. With A lot Of Screens. The Problem Is We Didn't Have The WRs Or The Linemen To Run The Offense Last Season.

Mexico City was the most populated city for a long time. Now it is Lagos Nigeria by a wide margin.
I believe more than 50 million live there.

2000 yds

D.Thomas Is The 2nd Best RB On The Team. He Is The 2nd Best All Around RB Also.

The RB Position The Way Dashi Sees It.

Nice picture Of Pouncy wearing that hat...
Apperently he did'nt attend the NFLs rookie symposium..
Incredaby stupid IMHO,Ten again he did attend U.Fla.

7 million in the city of Lagos...Shanghai most populated city with almost 18 million...Followed by Istanbul and Karachi...

ETF, Lagos, Portugal. In the Algarve region. Sun destination in the country.

It's not even the most populated on the African continent. Kinshasa, Congo has 8.7 million people.

Wow lots of exposing ETF going on.

Leach Makes Perfect Sense On This Team.

One Of Our Biggest Problem Was Short Yardage Situations.

2 Problems Next To Suspect Guard Play On Offense That Philbin Fixed Or Is Trying To Fix. Deep Threat And Short Yardage.

Good news so far is none of our players have been in trouble with the law...And nobody got hurt in the OTA's...That's about all you can ask for when TC begins...

Now, we understand that playing pro football leads to a lot of hits to head. We understand that. We also understand that Florida doesn’t produce many Nobel laureates. However, these two brothers have apparently been swallowing stupid pills by the dozen..
Maybe those pills can be part of the drug prgram..
Then again if that happend all NFL team would find it hard to field a Punt return team much less then a full team.

Yep, football players for the most part are meatheads. Young men to be used up for our entertainment ... how's that for perspective?

LOL Mark, How true, Reminds me of the Roman Empire..

I hope Ireland wasn't vacationing in the same part of Australia that Ricky Williams a few years back otherwise Leach might be the highest paid (no pun intended) fullback in football.

Why do we want Miller blocking when he is as fast as Wallace and stronger? When he is not running the ball, he needs to be in the pass pattern.

Try covering him with a LB. Miller coming out of the backfield might be better than a receiver in the slot.

And by the way, Gronkowski might not have been a world beater on the Jets the past couple of years.

Yes, not counting the suburbs, Shanghai is the most populated city in the World(Wikipedia). Hell of a City from what I saw.

I love all these Shangaos and Shingaos. In Cuban they are most delicious sounding words.

A little too real for you, Oscar?

And fist pump, it is a little something like that - well these guys are extremely well paid at least.

Why not have we this? Of Cambodia nd other nation build theirr subway cars abd auto mobiles? Read of I this in Economist and other periodical news source. To see the Miami Dolphin also will travel by aeroplane to the Miami city of December. I am told it is cold then?

Opa-Locka is the most impressive city on Earth.

What are the Vegas odds for another Mark Sanchez Butt Fumble?

Mark = 2 watt= many others. Is this legal, Armando?

go finsssssssssssss lost a lot of respect for pouncey but oh well. huge year for this franchise

Lagos, Nigeria is the most populated city in the world and it has the most expensive real estate.
These figures that you posted are outdated.
Regardless population figures are not fraud.
-Putting a shhtty team on the filed under the guise of a great team is fraud.
-Putting a shhty team on the field and then blaming the QB for GM's incompetence is fraud
-Finding a corpse and then blaming it on the only Hispanic homeowner in whitey town, Mass and then trying tro priece together some evidence is fraud.

That is why I expose the fraud. I do not expose the population statistics because they mean nothing to me.

This Blog is heavily populated, by the same Person.

Thank God Armando's back!

Other than him and a very few good posters here.........this place is hardly worth stopping by.

It's amazing how much damage one or two tards can do.
