« Longest practice of the season (officially) is over | Main | Jerry injured, Dolphins experimenting with OL »

The Dolphins address various issues of note

What are the Dolphins saying their first full week of practice. Here are some snippets (love that word) on various topics:

Coach Joe Philbin on left tackle Jonathan Martin: “We saw a lot of progress, we saw developments there. His technique is good, he needs to work on his punch a little bit better, the consistency of the punch, but I thought overall he played well. He had five games roughly that he played at left tackle last year, so he needs to have frequent snaps but we’re expecting a lot.”

Is Philbin comfortable with the depth along the OL? “Not necessarily, I don’t know that I’m comfortable with the depth of any position yet. We’re still in that initial phase of camp, still a lot of teaching going on, not overly concerned with who’s getting a rep against who at this point in time. We’re more concerned about the volume of work that we can get done, the amount of things we can teach, get a look at it on the practice field, then go back and reinforce some of the things in the meeting room.  We haven’t really gotten to that stage yet, but I don’t know that I’m comfortable at a lot of positions yet."

What are John Jerry's thoughts on the OL? "We are going to be alright up front. We have five preseason games, so that will benefit a lot of guys."

Jerry on the eventual challenge from Lance Louis for his starting RG job: "I’m a competitor. Lance is a competitor. We are going to compete. We are going to help each other. We are going to make each other better."

But, but, but John, Lance Louis wants your job: "You know, I think he has that mindset, and I’ve got that mindset. At the same time, we are just trying to get better."

New receiver Mike Wallace and quarterback Ryan Tannehill haven't connected on any significan deep passes in live team periods yet. Is that a product of the installation of the offense, Mike? “We have different days where we do different things. I have all the confidence that Coach (Mike) Sherman is going to put it in how it is needed to be put in. I’m not really worried about that. I think that will come in due time. It is only day (four at practice). We have a lot more days to go at camp and especially before the regular season. I think everything will fall in place. I think they have a good plan in place for us."

Cameron Wake sort of took Olivier Vernon under his wings, so to speak, in the offseason and the two defensive ends -- one accomplished, one wanting to accomplish -- spent time together in the offseason.

What happened during that time, Cam Wake?

“He’s one of the guys I was talking to some of the guys earlier, he’s probably one of the most improved guys on the team.  I spent a little time with him in the offseason. He’s a guy who’s hungry and from the day he got here, you knew he was one of those guys with that mindset, being a small defensive end like me and some of the other guys on the team, you can’t go in there timid.  It’s not for the meek and mild. You have to go in there, throw your body in there, doesn’t matter if he’s 6’8 and 400 pounds, you have to go after him and tackle him.  It’s that pit bull mentality. It’s not the size of the dog in the fight; it’s the size of the fight in the dog. So he’s that kind of guy."

Does Wake like Vernon's approach?

"He came here with a lot of that, and I don’t want to toot my horn too much but, I like to think that I’m a guy that he can learn some things from and take some pieces of my game and incorporate his own style too.  He brought a lot already when he signed up here, but that guys is a hell of a player and I know he’s only going to get better."

"This my kind of QB", Joe Philbin last year regarding Pat Devlin. I know you won't like this but the Truth is that Joe said it.

Always follow the Truth. You might be better directed.

Everybody disappeared from here. No sense of Humor.

There used to be great Humor in this Blog. I remember somebody saying, "this is better than Comedy Central". Petrograd and his moisture, the Empress of Pineapples, the incontinent Rabbi, etc. Anybody bearing down on you?

So he also said Lane was the most talented FB he's coached and we know that's not true.

I could Coach this team to the Playoffs THIS YEAR! I would HOPE Philbin can do the same.

1. Taylor and Davis get every opportunity too start along with Grimes. Marshall for depth.

2. Shelby, Vernon and Wake play DE. Meaning Jordan joins Ellerbe and Wheeler to form the best Linebacking Crew in the League. Misi, Trusnik and Spitler.....? LMAO-Thanks, but ah.......NO!

3. Jonathon Martin......? Maybe for depth. Slide Clabo over to Left Tackle, put John Jerry at Right Tackle and Lance Louis at Right Guard! Clabo is Clabo, but at least he'd be better than Martin. Jerry's in the best condition of his LIFE and always looked better at Tackle too me.

Oh yeah.......almost forgot.......

4. Bench Tannehill NOW, before it's too late. Hand the job to Devlin and get the Hell out of the WAY!!!!

Yep, GUARANTEED 12 wins Baby!

I gracefully disagree with that entire comment Odin.

So he also said Lane was the most talented FB he's coached and we know that's not true.

He meant too say Leach. He Coached Leach in Green Bay for a year.

I gracefully disagree with that entire comment Odin.

Are you doubting ME........?

You know, I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express **TWICE**!!!!

I didn't know Philbin had Coached Vonta Leach.

Yep, GUARANTEED 12 wins Baby!

I fully agree! Problem is that it would be for the opposing team. 4-12 here we come.

Thanks coach Odin!

Yep, Sherman too.

Odin,

Its just that the team has so much talent, even you couldn't f-ck up 4 wins.

Philbin wanted Leach but Ross was too cheap.

Fins will go 4-1, their 1st 5gms. say this because Odin isn't hc.

odin,

Agree 110% on point #1

Point #2 is a winner!

Point #3 would not be the best thing that could happen there is a reason nobody would pay over 5 Mil. a Yr. for him and I'd be willing to bet it has something to do with being put on he left Vs. speed rushers.

Agree though on Jerry being a better fit at Tackle. I always felt we should go get a Center and kick Pouncey over to LG but that's just me given I've never been a big fan of Cogs slow feet in any blocking scheme associated with the 21st Century NFL.

I am hoping the best with Tannehill and reserve judgement on your 4th point already posted my views on that on the last page

Odin,

Even if you were hc, there's still great chance we will sweep the Bills and Jets. There's your 4 wins baby!

Darkoak, shame on you. You lying. Why?

And exactly what do you base these things on, itchy feeling?

When being paid millions a year, a hc has to base it on the facts, not itchy feeling. You'll have extremely short hc career allowing itchy feelings to be your final analysis.

Man are you fools STUPID.

Can't you see that is NOT odin?

SHeesh! You guys are blind forking idiots! Clueless!!!!

Politicians love people like you!!!!!

They LOVE your empty manipulative heads!

Posted by: odinseye | July 25, 2013 at 10:44 PM

Sherman/Ted Thompson siged Leach as UFA in 04 but McArthy cut him when Philbin was OL Coach.

Why don't we just get a center and move Mike Pouncey to fb. It only took nearly 20yrs to find a great center once Dwight Stephenson was forced to retire due to injuries.

Great centers are falling from the trees.

The fact it's the Pos. he played throughout his College career until twin brother (the one who played Center) left UF for draft moving him over his Sr. Season! You were to stuck in that draft telling us all how Mark Ingram's 40X didn't matter it was the 10 Yd. shuttle we should pay attention to while this Emmitt Smith clone blew up the spot in the NFL remember!!

I will never be able to trust Darkoak again.

Fin4,

That post was really tongue in cheek.

I do feel Taylor and Davis should get all the opportunities to develop quickly.

I also want to see Jordan as an OLB/Pass Rush Specialist.

The rest is just tongue in cheek-thinking outside the box on our two biggest issues. Tannehill and Martin.

Clabo has NEVER played on the Left as far as I know and I'm not ready to give up on Martin just yet. For the record, I would like to see Jerry play some tackle now that he's in such good shape. He could always fill in for an injury/contingency plan too. Get him some reps!

I like Devlin tons and think he could be developed. But I'm all in on Tannehill for this year. We have too much time and trouble invested to change directions at this point.

I actually had Pouncey in my mock draft along with a host of others while you beatched and moaned about drafting another OL was wasing the pick ect...I also posted AD NAUSEAM about playing him at LG trying Incognito at his old College Pos. of Center were he played for the Cornhuskers! Some questioned if Mike could play Center in the NFL given slow delivery and move back to Guard at NFL level.

fin4,

Pouncey's a pro bowl calibre center. Vince Wilfork would probably agree with you about moving Pouncey to center and replacing him with a sewing thimble.

Your suggestion would be more plausible had awe a pro bowl caliber center to replace Pouncey with. Until then, we're only robbing Peter to pay Paul with that logic.

odin,

I'm glad your here given you remember DB's Ingram man crush 2010 and am sure remember having the conversation with me about Pouncey at LG. Do me a favor and read my posts @11:01 and 11:06 and tell me if they don't ring a bell for you. To bad Rob ísn't here but maybe Darryl will drop in given I know he remembers given he kept score on the mocks.

And "Mr. Itchy Feelings" was questioning my Coaching abilities-LOL.

Pouncey played Guard and played it very, VERY well.

What's more, Mr. "Hollywood" Samuda quickly established himself as one hell of a Center himself.

Not that I would do it, but the options are feasible. Samuda could play Center and Pouncey would be an upgrade over Cog's, Jerry and/or Lance Louis!

Jamar Taylor seems to still be experiencing post surgery issues with the sports hernia. As a rookie, that doesn't bode well with his chances to become a day 1 starter. Marshall's very solid, and would have to have a terrible preseason for Taylor to over take him.

Davis? Lets be realistic here. Expecting a 3RD RD cb to win a day starting cb job is a little "Dorothy Youre not in Kansas any morish".

Posted by: odinseye | July 25, 2013 at 11:13 PM

Uhh..........

Tell us Mr. Odin, exactly how many games was it that Josh Samuda started at center for us last season?

Based on a thimble 's worth of evidence youre ready to anoint him starter quality. If Philbin thought Samuda was that good. He would be lined up as the starting center and Pouncey at LG.

Until you see that, you and fin4 failure ned to put a muzzle on it.

Fin4,

I remember the Man Crus.....er........LOVE for Ingram. YG posted about Ingram non-stop from late december to mid April-LOL!

I remember him also condemning the Pouncey pick without a doubt.

To be honest, I remember him deriding Pouncey so much, because initially I kind of, sort of, a little bit, maybe did it too-LOL.

Anyway, to be specific, YG kept harping on how you never should use that high of a pick on an interior Lineman. And how Ingram was going to be re-writing the record books and destroying our Run D every time we faced him.

Your suggestion would be more plausible had awe a pro bowl caliber center to replace Pouncey with. Until then, we're only robbing Peter to pay Paul with that logic.

Posted by: LOVE FAKING 17-0-IN-YUR-ASS! | | July 25, 2013 at 11:08 PM

I see you remember who played what in College leading up to draft now that you were enlightened before you dropped some outrageous post about his numerous 1st team All SEC selections at Center or him being a finalist for the Outland trophy for best Center in College Football.

Your prospective regarding him at Center is not mine I feel he's a perennial Pro Bowler at LG one of the most dominant in the NFL if placed there day one seems it escapes you the trouble he had and still sometimes has on shotgun snaps. I personally would have chased down Houston Center Myers in FA who incidentally signed for about the average we'll be giving Clabo this Yr. There are a host of things we could have done just cause you didn't have a justifiable argument for your brain lapse on which Pouncey played for us doesn't mean your right about were he would be best used.

Posted by: fin4life | July 25, 2013 at 11:10 PM

Yeah, and Ingram was 1st in line of present era Bama rb's. It better known now they are more a product of their great olines, than just their talent alone.

Dashi's still the only Bama rb homer left. That ship has sailed with me long ago. Great try, using the past to defnd yourself when losing a "present" debate.

Didn't work very well, now id it. LOL...

It is a fair assumption that we won't see the moniker Darkoak around here. If we do, we know we can't trust it as it lies.

Until you see that, you and fin4 failure ned to put a muzzle on it.

Ha Ha, you Tard. I was quoting Joe Philbin in regards to Samuda. Take it up with him Mini-Me!

To be honest, I remember him deriding Pouncey so much, because initially I kind of, sort of, a little bit, maybe did it too-LOL.

Posted by: odinseye | July 25, 2013 at 11:21 PM

Wake up Dorothy, there wasn't a poster here that wanted a 1st pick used on an olineman. Hell, as a fan, once the pick's made you just hope it works out.

No one here wanted Pouncey as a center. They thought he would suck because of his snap issues at UF. I think some of you are still sore he wasn't originally placed at LG.

I never said Leach Oscar.

Regarding CB's- I would expect Taylor to be brought along slowly this year with his hernia recovery. Will Davis is a very interesting guy. He is very raw but he shows a knack for locating the ball when following in coverage. I believe we could see him overtake Carroll at some point this season. He could play the boundary with Marshall moving inside in the Nickel.

Oline- It's interesting that Samuda is getting called up to RG. I think it's an excellent move! We have spent way too much time trying to play Jerry there. I think Jerry should be our backup RT. Dallas Thomas is comfortable anywhere on the left side. I believe he was brought in to replace Incognito next year (ala the Martin pick last year). For now though, he needs to learn both LT and LG in this system because if Martin fails, he will be the choice at LT.

Posted by: fin4life | July 25, 2013 at 11:22 PM

Well, guess what? No matter what your perspective is, its pretty safe to say Mike Pouncey will end his playing career as a CENTER.

Get the f-uck over it!

Pouncey is easily in the top 5 centers of the league, maybe top 3. That tells me he is playing in the right spot. Jeeezz. You don't tinker wtih excellence!

Pouncey always said he was a center. He wants to play center. He is playing the position at a pro bowl calbiur, and some fool wants to slide him over????

In todays game, there is no better place for your best lineman than Center, if that is what he does well.

Pouncey's a Pro Bowler in my opinion. That's all there is to that.

Fin4 and I are simply talking outside the box/contingencies and MAINLY our OWN thoughts and ideas on the matter.

Thoughts, ideas and opinions that we're not ashamed or afraid to post under our one and only REAL names.

Until you can man up enough to do the same, I have to suggest that it is you and all your multiple personalities that need the muzzle.

Cheers ;)

Ha Ha, you Tard. I was quoting Joe Philbin in regards to Samuda. Take it up with him Mini-Me!

Check my posts to you. I've yet to call you one name.

Darkoak, I know youre watching. These are the types you love to associate yourself with.

As I've said many times here, I don't start the name calling, but then circle-jerk club loves to call me out for defending myself.

Hillfuckinglarious!

Where do people come up with this nonsense that Pouncey is not a center? He sees himself as a center, two pro coaching staffs see him as center, yet some bloggers with no pro experience want to move him.

Ridiculous.

Saying Pouncey is not really a center is like saying Lebron is not really a basketball player.

Didn't work very well, now id it. LOL...

Posted by: LOVE FAKING 17-0-IN-YUR-ASS! | | July 25, 2013 at 11:23 PM

Using the past to justify and argument, ROTFLMFAO! Your kidding right? You were talking about were anybody could get a notion of Pouncey playing LG given he's a Center and when shown up for the clown that you are try to flip the script with a story about how he couldn't be replaced at Center (weak by the way)

By the way your Football knowledge is suspect, do you even pay attention to the types of schemes teams run and the fit certain players are in them???? Ingram is lost on the Saints because they're a pass blocking OL that uses the run mostly on quick draws or quick traps requiring speed he doesn't possess. Not the best fit for Ingram in New Orleans who could use a change of scenery to the Giants maybe but a great fit for Ivory.

When does the Dashi personality take over?

That's the way to eliminate YG from here, discredit all the nicks he writes under.

Posted by: fin4life | July 25, 2013 at 11:33 PM

Its not just me, see what another poster has to say about your crazy idea. Mike thinks the idea is asinine too.

Oh, yeah, you'll exlain that way by saying Im using the Mike screen name to. Anyone disagreeing with you twinks is always me using another screen name.

De-Nile isn't a river in Egypt you know. LOL...

I don't think it's a matter of who starts it. Stick with a name, admit when you are wrong, and don't play into their games. Case closed. Then what you say about those guys is true but until then the name changing saps any credibility you have.

I never said Leach Oscar.

Posted by: Darkoak | July 25, 2013 at 11:28 PM
==============================================

Yeah, I said LEACH. I was making a Joke, as in: Philbin MEANT to say Leach, but Lane's name came out.

Hope this helps.

PS: YG, almost NONE of your posts above make any sense at all.

It's you and your lack of reading comprehension skills "doing you in........AGAIN-LOL". I say this jokingly YG, but FOR REAL, re-read your posts above and check.......check........well......CHECK YOSelf!

Oscar,

You should be ROTFL your ass off. These aliases Im being accused of are really you. I've uncovered a many times you being the king of aliases in this blog.

I've warned the idiots here many times in the past. Still theyre too dumb to realize its you.

Will someone please tell DARKOAK that I made a post to him earlier I will no longer post or reply to him.

I really don't think he gets it.

Saying Pouncey is not really a center is like saying Lebron is not really a basketball player.

Posted by: Mike | July 25, 2013 at 11:33 PM

Your either one of Flippers many personalities or a very mis-informed fan! Pouncey didn't play Center till MArquise went PRO! (the one who plays for us is Mike) In every outlet there was talk about which Position he plays when in the NFL before that draft. I happened to be making a point about it when other mis-informed bloggers chimed in.

Mike, I mean YG-ROTFLMAO, I mean Mike and YG,

If you have any reading comprehension skills, go back and see if Fin4, ORIGINAL COMMENT was in the PAST Tense(if you know what that means).

He was talking about how he felt back THEN, you know......2010, after we drafted Pouncey and word came out that he would be tried at center.

Sheesh and God Almighty. Don't just learn the Language, learn how to use it and understand it as well.

Posted by: fin4life | July 25, 2013 at 11:42 PM

Why of course, anyone not trapped in your own stupidity mut be me. That explains everything.

Denile isn't a river in Egypt, you know?

odin are you following this? I feel like I'm in that Abbott and Costello bit about whose on 1st!

Will you please just stfu while youre already behind. Please? LOL...

fin4 losers,

You lost all blog credibility when you decide to side with Odin. If you think Odin has blog credibility, then youre dumber than any of us ever realized.

"Birds Of A Feather, Flock Together".

fin4llife,

Put the nonsense aside. Who cares about where he played when his brother was there? The fact is the guy is a damn good center and we are not likely to find a center of equal calibur if we look for ten years.

He said himself coming out of college he is a center. Wouldn't he know what position he is? Two completely separate coaching staffs have seen him as not just a center, but a great center. Who the heck gets more praise at his postion the fins roster than Pouncey? NOBODY!!!!

So you want to take the guy that excels the most at his current position and replace him with someone inferior.

You are bonkers DUDE.

Odin thinks all of Dashi's suck and swallows are cute.

Fin4 losers, these are types you have decided to pleasure in the company of. Birds of feather truly do flock together.
