The offensive line and how it can affect Dolphins O

This morning my column in the Miami Herald explains the state of flux the Dolphins offensive line is in since John Jerry's knee injury disturbed the relative peace of the unit. It explains how several players are moving around, including players you wouldn't have thought. It explains how offensive coordinator Mike Sherman sounds a bit uncertain about how such juggling might affect players.

But allow me to go a bit further here as we have more space to dig into the issue. (I'm so glad the Internet is not yet full to capacity).

One of the reasons the stability of Miami's offensive line is profoundly important this year is because the Dolphins are undergoing something of a transformation on offense and it greatly depends on the ability of the front wall to stay sturdy.

The Dolphins, you see, are apparently going away from their typical offense this year. So far this training camp the use of the FB as the lead blocker has been rare indeed. I think I've seen the Dolphins in a traditional I formation with Jorvorskie Lane leading Lamar Miller through a hole perhaps a handful of times in over 700 snaps.

Basically, the Dolphins are attempting to make the most of their offseason acquisitions of Mike Wallace and Brandon Gibson by putting them on the field with Brian Hartline. So the Dolphins may be transitioning to a three-receiver set team. Except that when you add a WR to the offense you have to subtract another player because, well, the team's request to play with 12 offensive players in 2013 was denied by the NFL.

So the fullback position has been practically eliminated. (Now we understand why the Vonta Leach chase kind of fizzled).

In a typical Dolphins huddle this camp you have Gibson, Wallace and Brian Hartline as the other starting receiver. No Lane. No fullback at all, really.

Yes, the tight end or H-back (depending on personnel) can serve as the lead blocker. But even that is hardly considered a hammering attempt to be physical because Dustin Keller often is asked to serve as the lead blocker. And if you are aware of Keller's histroy you know he's an accomplished pass-catching tight end. But as a blocker ... he's an accomplished pass-catching tight end.

And Charles Clay's blocking will never be confused with Leach's lead blocking.

So with less blocking from the fullback position and sometimes zero blocking from the fullback position -- because the formation is a one-back set -- the Dolphins would obviously depend on excellent blocking from their offensive line to power their running game.

Do you understand now the higher need this season to have good, stable offensive line play? Simply, if that unit doesn't win up front, there is no fullback reinforcement coming through the hole to help. It's win or the play loses.

Except that, as you'll read in my column the line is definitely not stable right now.

Yes, it's early in camp. Most clubs just opened camp this past weekend while the Dolphins have already been in camp since July 22. But Jerry will be out at least another week at best and perhaps three more weeks. He definitely isn't playing the preseason opener against Dallas in the Hall of Fame game. So time is precious.

Obviously, the Dolphins could decide to shelve their three-wide look as a base offense. (God, I hope not). But that would mean they're putting one of their better players on the bench in favor of a lesser player simply to make the running game better. It's upside down logic.

No, the Dolphins need the offensive line to step up so that the plans so clearly laid out this early in camp aren't scrapped and the 2013 Dolphins don't go back to the more traditional and boring and not as effective in a passing league I-formation sets we've seen in the past.

Thank you Mando for explaining to us the importance of the O-line.

Good post Armando...

I still am in the camp that you can get by with a "decent" line an above average QB...

My theory is that a dangerous QB keeps DL and LB at bay....we see it with Tom Brady and Peyton Manning (smarts)....and we have seen it most recently with RG3 (athletic ability combined with smarts)...even Tony Romo to a lesser extent

If the D has enpugh respect(fear) of the ability of the QB to overcome the pass rush...then the DC won't send as many...or won't be overly aggressive...

in short...

A QB can nuetralize a defense based on past performance...resume' if you will....

Tanne hasn't checked that blok yet....but if he does (can)...the line will appear better simply due to his play....

we'll see....

It's funny with all this o-line talk that the secondary is not getting much coverage right now. I'd like to hear about the whole team, but Mando seems focused on the offense.

Mando...What is the deal with Lance Louis?

We got him in FA from the Bears and know he's rehabing a knee that underwent surgery last Nov.

He was the insurance policy if Jerry went down...can you report if he's ready to go or needs more time to heal.

blok...lol.....

When Jake Long left to be the starting LT for the Rams I did not think that it mattered.
Now that Mando has explained the importance of the O-line I think we should have gotten some compensation for him.

The FRAUD is that there was NO POST @ 9:28....mine was the first one...

but oh well....

alot of weird stuff happens on this site.....

From 2009 - 2011 the only thing that mattered was the QB.
Anything that went wrong could simply be blamed on the QB.
Now Mando is making excuses in advance for Tanne by shifting blame away from Tanne to his teammates.
Mando we are not falling for this preemptive shift of responsibility.
Tanne is responsible for the offense period.
Not the O-line, not the RBs, not the WRs, not the secondary.
It's Tanne, Tanne, Tanne

Kris,
We need to get the North Attleboro PD to investigate the mystery at 9:28am.
North Attleboro can tell you what happened before they collect any evidence, forensics or witnesses.

ETF...are you saying that Hernandez did not participate in the murder in North Attleboro?

Your on a roll @ 9:46....

almost as funny as 9:40....

do you do stand-up for a living???

i'm being serious here....you are the FUNNIEST guy on the blog....

please type some more...I'll be waiting patiently...

signed,
Waiting Patiently for more FUNNY post....

Long was a free agent = no compensation

John Jerry should've been off this team this offseason. He simply is not good. WHat is the big deal now that he's hurt? Can't they bring in someone from another team? A trade perhaps. Albert? Anyone? This needs to get fixed this year for crying out loud!

NH,
AH never murdered anybody.
The police should have investigated first before they put AH's name out there.
ESPN published some catchy headlines but the body of the stories do not support the headlines.
The truth is:
- AH is not the member of a gang
- AH never failed a drug test in the NFL therfore
- AH is not a pot smoking serial killer hiding out in th Pats huddle
- AH did not maintain a 'secret' flophouse. His landlord, neighbors and employer all knew that was one of his residences
- AH never requested to be married in jail
- The victim was working as AH's driver
- If the victim faild to take instruction then AH simply would have fired him
- AH is a HS grad, College grad, owns real estae, owns investments, files a 100 page tax return prepared by a team of CPAs

Why has there been investigation of the 'bad' people the victim was talking to at the strip club. Perhaps they do things like murder people and that is why AH told the guy, "don't fckk with those guys".

so if martin gets beat nonstop, it's tennehill's fault?
if the RG lets guys get to tannehill before he finishes his drop, it's tannehill's fault?
hopefully if the line is not doing a good job they move tannehill around to account for that, but if it is rely bad there will be no running game and defenses can just go for the QB on every play. so i'm really hopeful they find an adequate line combo soon and get them to wok as a unit and stop changing up every practice.
most positions can freelance a bit or have a player miss an assignment without disastrous results but the oline REALLY needs to be in sync.

ETF @ 10:14

Meant to say, "...why has there been no investigation of the bad people at the club..."

jaison,
Are you really Mando?
I ask because now it sounds like you are setting up excuses for Tanne in advance also.

Moma I went to the pee pee room at McDonalds an when I went inside there was a man sitting on the pottie with another man standing over him like really close and I think he was doing pee pee in his mouth and Moma I think he really had to go cause he kept saying ohhh yeahhh YG!

Heeee Heeee Heeeee !!

lil Timmy,
This is a football blog.
In here we discuss football and the crimes that the players are falsely accused of.
We do not discus McDonalds.

Exposing the fraud is a complete idiot who obviously has no clue how the game of football is played. If you don't have a offensive line you have nothing. It's a team sport douchebag. Tannehill will prosper if they make the correct moves on the line

NH,
I left off 1 important thing:

The prosecution had no evidence to provide the court at last weeks probable cause hearing a month after they jailed AH and had to get a 30 day extension.

douche,
Around here the QB has to be man enough to take the blame no matter what.
It as nothing to do with how the game is played, it has everything to do with manliness.

Mando, someone feeding you a tub of ****. One linemen injured isn't the "end all" of a good OL. If your a football player you can play the line. Your saying Jerrys injury as put the entire OL in flux? What? Jerry wasn't given an even chance to make this club let alone anchor the OL. Yep 2nd yr guy at lft tackle, Claybo at RT. These guys have played before and haven't forgotten how. Maybe they just are not good enough. As I remember the OL wasnt that good last yr and four of last yrs players are returning again this yr. Apparently they are not improving. No OL, no winnie. No winnie no tickiee. EVERYTHING starts with the OL, everything.
Ireland has year, after year to fix the OL. He let go of J Long to FA,,no regret there, but we still have the fat man Jerry, two FA RGs, one injured,,,Martin at LT who looks like Colombos turn stile routine. Someone needs to kick someone's ass and get this train rolling.

No douchebag. It's about chemistry with your teammates and brilliant coaches.all this together and mayb u start to have a chance. It's all on the qb. Ha ha your a joke

ETF ... The University of Florida would not remove AH's all star granite slab in front of the sports complex if they did not think he had something to do with the murder.
I obviously live in NH and get all the boston media outlets...there is a preponderance of evidence that cannot be overlooked.
The police don't grab high profile suspects unless there is evidence to indict them.
Sorry dude, IMO he's guilty of participating in a homicide until I see new evidence exonerating him.

Meanwhile....WTF is the deal with Lance Louis at RG?

As far as Tannehill's development, let me add this nugget from a Redskins beat reporter this morning on the radio. He was commenting on how RG3 was missing a few deep passes (overthrows, etc.). He said he's a little rusty and needs to get in sync.

SOUND FAMILIAR?

Looks like you don't start Training Camp perfect and ready for the Season. You need the practice/Pre-Season time to get back in the swing of things. Everything I've read about Tannehill leads me to believe there's nothing to worry about, he's developing as he should. And we won't know any further until we actually see him in game situations. Then we can accurately judge his play.

NH,
AH never murdered anybody.

DIDN'T KNOW YOU WERE AN EYEWITNESS TO THE EVENTS SEEING AS YOU REFER TO THAT VERY MATTER OF FACTUALLY!

The police should have investigated first before they put AH's name out there.

THE DISTANCE FROM HIS HOME THE BODY WAS DICOVERED AT AND THE FACT AN SUV HE RENTED WERE ALSO LOCATED AT THE SCENE WERE WHAT THE PRESS INITIALLY REPORTED, NOTHING ELSE!
ESPN published some catchy headlines but the body of the stories do not support the headlines.

NOTHING ABOUT HIM BEING THE MURDERER WAS REPORTED OUTSIDE OF AN ON GOING INVESTIGATION IN THE DAYS LEADING TO AH'S ARREST.

The truth is:
- AH is not the member of a gang - AGAIN I SUGGEST YOU LOOK AT HIS LEFT HAND THE NEXT TIME HE'S IN COURT BECAUSE HE CLEARLY HAS A TATTOO IN RED THAT READS BLOODS AN L.A. BASED GANG WITH CHAPTERS IN BRISTOL

- AH never failed a drug test in the NFL therfore - ABOUT YOUR ONLY TRUE STATEMENT

- AH is not a pot smoking serial killer hiding out in th Pats huddle - DUMB STATEMENT GIVEN HE HADN'T BEEN ARRESTED OR INDICTED FOR ANYTHING YET.

- AH did not maintain a 'secret' flophouse. His landlord, neighbors and employer all knew that was one of his residences - HALF TRUTH AT BEST
- AH never requested to be married in jail - REPORTED HIS LAWYERS MADE THE PETITION ASTOUNDED YOU HADN'T HEARD APPARENTLY SHE CAN'T KEEP HER MOUTH SHUT AND HE'S LOOKING FOR SPOUSAL PRIVLEDGE

- The victim was working as AH's driver - WERE DID YOU GET THAT? NOT A FACT!

- If the victim faild to take instruction then AH simply would have fired him - AH APPARENTLY HAS A C H I T TEMPER FROM ALL ACCOUNTS

- AH is a HS grad, College grad, owns real estae, owns investments, files a 100 page tax return prepared by a team of CPAs

MEANS NOTHING GIVEN HE AQUIRED FROM BEING A PRO ATHETE AND TED BUNDY WAS A COLLEGE GRAD ALONG WITH THE GREEN RIVER KILLER, JOHN WAYNE GACY ECT...

Why has there been investigation of the 'bad' people the victim was talking to at the strip club. Perhaps they do things like murder people and that is why AH told the guy, "don't fckk with those guys".

AGAIN DIDN'T KNOW YOU WERE PRESENT FOR EVENTS THE WAY YOU ASSURE HOW FACTS WENT DOWN!

Posted by: ExposingTheFraud | July 29, 2013 at 10:14 AM

PS,,,Mondo, you think Philpin has ever heard of the "Olahoma" drill. Mano a mano.
one center to snap the ball to the QB who turns to handoff to a RB who runs between to large field dummies. Also between these two dummies is an OLmen who is opposite a DLmen,,,the RB has to run between the dummies,,,,This drill gets very physical and you gotta be a man to play in the "Olahoma" drill. It weeds out the men form the boys. And Im sure the entire Dolphin team would feint if they knew the "Oklahoma" drill was coming. Wusseys all..

lil Timmy,
This is a football blog. - CORRECT AND YOU ALWAYS DEVIATE

In here we discuss football and the crimes that the players are falsely accused of.- WRONG IT'S A FOOTBALL BLOG WERE PEOPLE LIKE YOU TURN IT INTO COURT TV OR SOMETHING

We do not discus McDonalds. LIL TIMMY WAS EXPOSING A BLOGGER ON HERE I THOUGHT YOU OF ALL WOULD JUMP ON HIS EXPOSÈ

ETF...sounds like you were there at the murder site otherwise how can you be 100% sure AH was not the trigger man?
Should the Attleboro PD pull you in for questioning since you you are sure AH is innocent?

Beginning to look that way he better hope there isn't a reward or something for info. leading to the case or there maybe a race among those here to try an collect!

Will YG Show Up With His New Sign-In Name At 1 To Talk with Mando?

Doubt It.

On The Post.

Yes And No.

Agreed, Chemistry Is Important. But To me What Is More Important Is Our Young Guys Getting To Work With The 1st Team.

We Are Still A Developing Team. The Most Important Thing Is That Our Young Guys Develop Fast.

Start
LT-Martin
LG-D.Thomas
C-Pouncey Or Samunda
RG-Pouncey Or Samunda
RT-Clabo For 1 Or 2 Season, Til We Draft His Replacement.

The Faster We Start Our Young Guys The Faster They Can Develop Chemistry Together.

Make Incognito The #1 Backup On The Interior And N.Garner The Backup Tackle.

The O-Line Is In Better Shape Than Last Season. WE HAVE MORE DEPTH.

LAST YEAR WE WERE PRAYING NOBODY GETS HURT. THIS SEASON WE CAN AFFORD 1 Or 2 Guys Going Down. We Have Depth.

Oh And YG,

I KNOW I AM IN YOUR HEAD. AND UNDER YOUR SKIN.

You Proved It Yesterday.

You Made 20+ List Yesterday And Dash-I Was #1 On All Your List. I Am Always On Your Mind.

You, YG, Have Dreams At Night Of Combing My Chest Hair, You Punk Princess.

Posted by: Dash-1(Won) | July 29, 2013 at 11:18 AM

Agreed. Unlike our past 4 coaches, Phibin & co actually believe in taking young talent and TEACHING them how to play. Its very important our young guys get reps. Veterans already know how to play their spot at the elite level. That is how you improve through the draft.

fin4,
One of the phony ESPN headlies read "Accomplice Told AH Shot Odin".
The headline makes it sound like Wallace told the authorittes that he saw AH pull the trigger.
However when you read the story it says, "...All 4 of them drove to industrial park in Altima. Wallace, AH & Odin got out to piss; there were 5 gunshots, then AH and Wallace got back in car. On the way back to CT Wallace told Ortiz that AH told him that he shot Odin...".

So if that statement is true then:
- There was no suv at the scene
- Wallace never turned around when he heard 5 gunshots, he waited for AH to tell him what happened
- AH brought in 2 accomplises from out of state to help him murder Odin and dispose of him but in fact did the shooting himself and disposed of the corpse a mile from his house. So what did he need Ortiz & Wallace for?

The statments being released by N. Attleboro PD are preposterous and inconsistent.

The prosecution failed to produce the evidence at the probable cause hearing, how do you explain that?

Who is Samuda?

OJ Didn't Do It.

A.Hernandez Did.

Don't Be A Clown.

Hernandez Is The Classic Case Of A Wannabe Thug Hanging Around Real Low Life Thugs. So To Validate Himself To His Crew He Has To Earn Some Stripes.

If Hernandez Was A Real Thug Thug. And Leader Of His Posse. He Would've Had Someone Else Do The Shooting And Report Back To Him. Real Dons Don't Get Their Hands Dirty. You Have The Lowest Guy In The Ranks Do It And Take The Rap.

And I Have Proved Many Times That OJ Really Didn't Do It. It Is Humanly Impossible To Kill Two People By Yourself With Over 60+ Stab Wounds. And Not Even One Ran Away, Someplace Else. Goldman Was A Dope Dealer That Owed The Cartel Money And They Went To Collect. Look At The Crime Scene, Not Just The Person.

Anyone Who Stabs Anyone Over 60+ Times Is An Impulsive Killer And More Than Likely Will Kill Again. And Will Kill For Anything.

Heck, If OJ Would've Done It. When He Went To Recover The Stuff That Was Stolen From Him. He Would've Emptied Out A Clip On The People Who Took His Stuff. That Is How Killers Solve Their Problems. By Killing.

Look At A.Hernandez Multiple Incidents Of Murder Or Attempted Murder.

Killing Becomes A Drug To These People.

I just learned from Wikipedia that the northernmost palm tree on the Atlantic Seabord is in Delaware.

Why the coaches didn't just replace Jerry with Samuda?. In my opinion, they are trying to upgrade the behaviour of the whole offensive line as a unit, taking advantage of the absence of Jerry. If the changes went from week to week I will be concern, but in just one practice day, is fine.

Woodshed,

Some People Think Real Football Is Like Madden. Give Me Instant Gratification. NO. Real Football Is A Process. And If You Can Mold Your Own Team With Young Guys That Develop In Your System Even Better.

We Have One Of The Best O-Line Coaches In The League. Give Him Young Guys So He Can Mold. Instead Of Guys That Only Have 1 Or 2 Years Left.

Jerry And Incognito Were Both Slow Last Season. Thomas And Pounce Or Samunda At OG Will Give Us A More Athletic Line. Guys That Can Pull For Sweeps Or Screens.

Tell that line of bull to the fans in Indy who saw their team improve to 11-5 last year when one Andrew Luck was inserted at QB

INSTANT GRATIFICATION !!!!

Thanks for the inside look at the new offense, Mando. Hopefully we've seen the worst of the injuries. Fortunately Tanny is mobile, so he'll buy himself some time when he has to.

Mando, I know you are not a Jerry fan. So why in hell do you act like the sky is falling when he is out for a couple of weeks??? Last year you advocated tossing him off the team several times.

Do you feel it is necessary to beat the hell out of the Dolphins because everyone else is so positive about them?I hope so.

If what your columns say is a true reflection of your opinion of this team, you should change teams.

Can they do it again? I see a fall back to mediocrity this year for the Colts.

good article Armando, and you are right the three wideout formation is the ticket this year, go fins , I can hardly wait till Sunday go Fins!

Indy Had Gone 11-5 "Ten Straight Seasons" Before Going 1-15. Heck, If Peyton Would've Had A Decent Back Up The Colts Would've Gone 8-8.

Dansby Sabotaged Our Chances At A.Luck Or RG3. (If You Want Me to elaborate I Will) Me, Personally I Have Always Been An RG3 Fan. Ireland Went To Baylor, RG3 Went To Baylor. See The Connection.

Now T-Sizzle Was The Solid #3 In That Draft, With As Much Potential As The Other 2. The Dan Marino Of The Draft.

R.Wilson is Good, But He Is To Small To Have A Long Career In The NFL. You Can Check The History Of The NFL. 1 Maybe 2 QBs Have Won A Superbowl That Is Under 6'.

You Guys Want A Superbowl Right?

What kind of incompetent fool would capitalize the first letter of every word in their sentences? What a stupid affectation.

Kris,

ETF (aka swallow my load) is around. I hope you have some fresh new compliments for him. Keep the good bloggers fed, nice work.

That Colts team started the Yr. with K.Collins at QB and were 0-5 before they knew it replacing him with Curtis Painter (maybe worst back up in NFL history or at the top-10 of any such infamous list) He was throwning for 3 picks per game at a clip and by Mid-Oct. the vets on that team packed it in. In that Season they were getting blown out by the Jags (with Gabbert) and Titans by 4 TD's plus in some Div. match us which tells you the D was already planning their Off-Season vacations along with the rest of the team.

The2011 Colts had the Core of a team that had won 10 plus Seasons and the AFC South for Yrs. and you really believe they weren't better than what they showed aside from Ownership and Managements dicision to do nothing to help before the trade deadline with some BS story about Manning maybe back by Dec.!! For what!! To risk re-injury on a 1-10 team!! They purposely tanked that Season (Conspiracy by owner) eyeballing the 2012 prize, ANDREW LUCK!!

1st of all Ortiz is the one yapping away not Wallace whose Attorney is being paid for by AH. If you saw the scared look on his face at his araignment it isn't surprising he's the one talking. His claim (or supposed claims) make little sense if he was at the scene, I'll give you that unless AH had a silencer on his weapon but even then he had to wonder were the hell Lloyd went?

2nd right or wrong there attempting to tie the double homicide into this case so they can introduce it at trial as the motive and later use the testimony from this case in the one which follows for that murder without bringing into account the case from Fla. which you can bet will be moved from Civil Court into the Criminal Courts now as well. Dashi is right on the money @ 11:41 regarding the stupidity of one Aaron Hernandez and by the way if his Girl keeps yapping they may not need anyone else because she and only she knows his mindset about what set him off when he left his home with a gun in hand.

We have 5 games to fix the O line. YEA!!!

You guys are funnier than an episode of the Daily Show. Please keep bantering about AH.

This is the 1st thing that crossed my mind as well, if my friend who happens to be the Boyfriend of my Fiance's sister is murdered a mile from my house after I picked him up the night before I would have cooperated with the Police from the word Go! If innocent Hernandez shure acts like a guilty person and no BS about some street code of honor about handling yours he was an NFL Player with 40 Million reasons to act at least in a more caring manner about the circumstances unfolding.

Woodshed,

Agreed. Indianapolis will have a 8-8 record this year, and for the Next Couple Seasons. Most of the Team is still OLD. Wayne was Great but he has maybe 2 more season left. The Defense Is Old. The O-Line Is Old.

How is their line? Both of Them? Is it as Complete as The Dolphins.

The LBs? The Secondary?

The Only thing Indy has Over The Fins are The TEs. That is about it!! And Not by Much.

Indy could've Easily been 9-7 Or 8-8 Last Season. They should've lost a lot of Them Close Games. A.Luck is Good but he was also Lucky.

AH has had legal representation since before he entered the draft, they are not allowing him to talk.

It's funny with all this o-line talk that the secondary is not getting much coverage right now.

Really? Because I've been reading Mando's posts & tweets, and it sounds like the secondary is doing pretty awesome.

Also - hey, Exposing the Fraud? You need a new handle. Because exposing yourself is a misdemeanor.
