Bad day for consistent Dolphins offense

I'll say this for the Dolphins offense: They're being consistent lately.

Problem is they're consistently not very good.

Today was simply one of those days in that Mike Sherman's unit looked bad. They kind of resembled the same unit that didn't do much against the Dallas No. 2 defense on Sunday night in the Hall of Fame game.

Mike Wallace, who is getting closer to practicing but isn't quite there yet, did not work in full drills again today. On the bright side, John Jerry, who has missed two weeks and is about to start his third week away, seems to be inching toward getting back on the field. He was on the side early in practice rehabbing his knee. He will not play Friday against Jacksonville, however.

As for the people on the field, think Ryan Tannehill bad and Chad Bumphis increasingly good.

Tannehill threw three interceptions to defensive backs (two to Will Davis and one to Brent Grimes) and then had another ball tipped at the line of scrimmage, which Kheeston Randall intercepted and then fumbled away. So four interceptions on the day for Tannehill.

"Frustrated by today," Tannehill said. "It wasn't a very good day. It was frustrating. But I'm definitely moving in the right direction if you take out today. Frustrated with the day but we'll go back and make the corrections and go forward."

Although he recognizes Tannehill is assigned all the interceptions, offensive coordinator Mike Sherman said they're not all his fault.

"Offensively as a group we didn't have a good practice today," Sherman said. "I wouldn't put, even though they all go under his name, I wouldn't put them all on him. We had some young receivers out there. We had a lot of pressure today. But he'll have better days and today wasn't one of his best days; it wasn't one of our best offensive days."

Despite the offensive struggles, Bumphis is thriving. He caught no less than six passes in team and seven-on-seven drills. The kid led the team in receiving in the scrimmage and the Hall of Fame game and he's continuing the trend to the point he was working with the second unit today rather than the third string he was on last week.

Bumphis has obviously caught the coaching staff's collective attention.

"When Chad was in college, he played the inside slot receiver," Sherman said. "People's observation of him is he's not the fastest guy in the world. He's not the biggest guy in the world and so that's why he ended up an undrafted free agent. I do think he understands how to play that slot receiver. You have to be nifty and crafty and he appears to be that.

"He's done some good things. He has some things he needs to correct. He was on the back end of the interception for a touchdown when he kind of floated into a route instead of defined it a little more but that's part of being a rookie. We definitely can fix that. He's shown some out here and has a ways to go but he's a good guy to work with."

(By the way, I thought Jeff Fuller also had a very productive practice. He had four receptions that I saw. He was today's next most impressive of the receivers vying for the No. 4 and No. 5 jobs at WR.)

Asked if there were any other first-year players that caught his eye in the HOF game, Sherman said there weren't any. Yikes! The OC did volunteer that Josh Samuda, who played both guard and center in the game, distinguished himself with good work.

Ironically, even though Samuda played well, the Dolphins used Lance Louis with the first team offensive line during a couple of practice periods today. Samuda was in and out, suggesting he was nursing some physical issue.

Speaking of physical issues, running back Lamar Miller limped off the field toward the end of practice and didn't return. A trainer was looking at his lower right leg. He did say afterward he was fine.

The Dolphins got only limited work from backup Pat Devlin today but he is not seriously hurt to the point the club is about to sign another QB at this point. Randy Starks (knee) continues to miss practice while Jared Odrick (groin) was back on the practice field today.

Coach Joe Philbin, talking for the first time since he studied the game tape following the HOF game, said he was not pleased by either the offensive or defensive line in the game.

"I was a little disappointed in both offensive line play and defensive line play," Philbin said. "You don't play defense and average 5 yards a carry for an opponent. That's not good run defense. Were there some good flashes of play? Sure, there were good flashes. There were some signs but we have a lot of work to do."

It has been abundantly clear that Jonathan Martin is among the offensive linemen needing to improve. Well, for the second consecutive practice he did not give up a sack today. And Sherman seems upbeat about the team's prospective left tackle.

"Any left tackle in this league in his second year is a work in progress and Jonathan Martin is as well," Sherman said. "It's a premier position and I don't know any left tackle outside the Jonathan Ogdens of the world and Richmond Webbs of the world can walk in and effectively do the job play after play.

"I'm pleased with his progress. Does he have a ways to go? Yeah. But I expected that going in. He's working to get better and he'll be a fine left tackle in this league if not a really good one."

On the defensive side of the ball, Will Davis had two interceptions today, as mentioned above. But he has to do some work on his tackling technique before he makes Philbin happy.

Philbin is quite pleased with the work of Derrick Shelby but as to the team,  the coach said, "There's nothing we don't need work on. It's not uncommon this time of year."

The Dolphins today announced the extension for Reshad Jones, who seemed relieved the negotiation is over.

"It feels good to put it behind me and do what I do," Jones said. "They said they were going to do it and it just proves how much these guys trust and believe in me on and off the field."

Jake Long has to be laughing.

T-Hill 25+ TDs
L.Miller 1200+yds
Wallace and Hartline over 1k yds rec. Each
Ellerbe over 150+ Tackles
At Least 4 Defensive Pro Bowlers

Oh no...a bad day for the offense. It must be the end of the world and the trolls must be giddy with excitement. Make all you non fans a deal you do all the worrying and panic. I'll just wait sit back and laugh at your silliness.

For Jake Long

Hey dashi,

I saw you waiting at the bus stop today but I couldn't offer you a lift because I just had the car cleaned and you were awfully sweaty. Pretty darn hot out there waiting on the street corner.

Both you and Odin are diminish in cranial capacity to the point of no return. Both you are totally out of your skull to think "ONE PERSON" is so obsessed with ou they would use 50 aliases in a week just to torment you.
You both need to wakethefuck up. You aren't nearly that important to anyone here. Especially not me. I only come at you in "ONE SCREEN NAME". Kiss my ass if you don't believe me.

Odin and Dashi think you're the only one that hates them??? LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is good that Jeff Ireland has directed his laser-like attention to the Dolphins offensive line needs. Word around headquarters he is hunting acorns like a hyperactive squirrel. When a man send out for lunch and cancels a massage, you know he is serious.

I guess some of you have NOT read the review of J. Martin on the AFC East Blog. Too bad you are not interested in the facts. The guy did a solid job in the HOF game and was the least of our worries. Not surprised though.

Posted by: Dashi | August 06, 2013 at 09:17 PM

Good thing you dont bet, kid.

That is a very good point. I hadn't really thought about it that way but you very rationally explained your position and explained it well.

I hope that you are right. It would be good to see that happen this year, especially if it results in further success.

Thank you.

Miami is 1 pt favorite over Cleveland in the opener and this next exhibition game is pick em vs Jax

I dont know about the LEAST of our worries but certainly the QB position looks just as bleak.

All of the stats from the HOF game would indicate that Miami played better than Dallas did except for turnovers! That's where Miami lost the game. And, poor blocking and tackling didn't help any.

I think Tannehill & Co. will do better against the Jags. And, I believe we'll see a better Miami Defence as well.

This team surprised the pundits last year by going 7-9. We were expected to only win 3 games! Not thinking about the playoffs!

Our WR's are young. Hopefully they can get in the same page with Tannehill soon and stop making mistakes. THAT is one of the Offense's biggest problems right now. And, having backup O-linemen that can't block yet or are playing out of position.

The Dolphins are going to do fine this year. Just be patient.

Can someone tell me why these multiname trolls are so cowardly? Why is it they can talk crap all day/night long and as soon as someone challenges their BS with some facts and reality they slink away and go crawl hide under a rock? Same MO everyday. Spineless and clueless.

Mark, Mando didn't throw those 4 picks in practice.

Whatever problem you have with Armando, you obviously didn't read what he wrote, as I found out straight-forward, balanced when need be, and informative.
What do you want, a CHEERLEADER?

Posted by: IMAWriter | August 06, 2013 at 05:50 PM

It's pretty peculiar which sign in names tend too stick up for Armando and it what manner..........?

Nonetheless, IMA, this has to be about the most one sided, most absurd defenses of Armando I've ever witnessed.

We had plenty of news to be reported when Armando went off on his Pro-Steelers/Anti-Miami "HatGate Post". Besides being ridiculously LATE TO THE PARTY, **NOBODY** wanted to hear more about the Pouncey's HATS!

BTW - Mando completely missed out that day on reporting Tannehill's first Deep Hook Ups with Wallace. Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww Shucks! But there was this MONTH OLD Hat thing to Blab on about-ROTFLMAO!

Today, Armando had no shortages of negative things to report. The Team Stunk It Up, fair enough.

Ya think it was just ANOTHER coincidence that Armando failed to mention Tannehill's Two Deep TD Throws.....?

You can translate this into anything you'd like. Fact is, I'm just being honest. The thing that really bugs me though, I used to come here for news and updates. Now I go to Jackson, Dolphins.Com and God Forbid, even the SS and the PBP.

Like Mark and Phins78 have mentioned, a lot of good, intelligent fans have just up and left this place. There used to be quite a few good posters that would come here and post news reports. I also took up that practice. It made this an even BETTER place for news.

But now that Armando's vendetta has gotten him "Persona non Grata status" with most team insiders, his news worthy reports have become fewer and further between. As has a lot of those good old posters that just up and left.

Sorry if this hurts anyone's feelings. Like I said, I'm just being Honest on a very important issue. Between this and the Two Drag Queen Trolls ruining the place, it's become insufferable just clicking the link.

Lots of Trailer Park Trash here..........Substance........Not so much.

Please, don't kill the messenger.

This begs the question of what kind of drooling moron would actually bet good money on a freaking EXHIBITION game where the end result is totally meaningless and a good portion of the contest is played by guys who won't even make the team?

That would have to be a very special level of sick. Seriously, it's amazing they even put point spreads out for this practice crap.

Posted by: odinseye | August 06, 2013 at 10:32 PM

Very true. I'm ashamed in the so-called fans of this team. My guess is that their defeatist attitude carries over to their personal lives. I'd be surprised if any of them can hold a job at anywhere other than a gas station or fast food joint!

Good Post Odin. I'm with you on your thoughts. I gather my info from many different sites. I'll take any criticism of anyone on the team IF it's fair. I saw no breakdown of the T-hill passes from the game or J. Martin. But the bottom of the barrel trolls here rave and carry on with their lies and BS daily.

And odin doesn't carry on with lies and BS daily?

I guess the truth hurts you. It certainly doesn't hurt anyone else.

Lets see.............

Tannehill is God Awful Garbage. Got it.......Check!

Hartline is God Awful Garbage. Got it........Check!

Hartline didn't have any talent around him. Now-Now, BEFORE YOU "START", Remember the Dolphins are just as terrible and rotten as last year. If not worse. Per **YOU** Protein Shake ;)

You have made that PERFECTLY clear. So Tannehill stinks, the team stinks and Hartline stinks.

Yet, going against double coverages most of the time with a stinking rotten Rookie QB and only stinking rotten players around him, he puts up 74 catches for 1083 yards.

Hmmmmmmmm.......That puts him up there according to NFL.Com.

I know **YOUR** "TYPES" aren't into labels(Ahem......LOL)and **YOUR** "Types" like to "Have It Both Ways". But that's for the Rainbow Room Protein Boy(sounds like a Gay Super Hero-LOL).

If Tannehill and the entire team Sucks Dic......(Oops, bad analogy, these always get **Him** distracted). I meant to say, if Tannehill and the entire team was as putrid as you say, how on earth did Hartline Log In 74 catches for 1083 yards?

Riddle me THAT......Simpy Simpleton-LOL........

I think Mando wants to be a Football "Critic" rather than a Football "Reporter"!
He is chomping at the bit to really unleash against the Dolphins right now. And, it's killing him that he can't because you, and I (along with some others), have called him out about all of the negative garbage he was spewing before Training Camp even started. I wonder how long he'll stay "handcuffed" to having to report more than just spew his opinion? Slowly, his bias against the Fins is starting to show itself. But, it won't be long until he's back to his "The Sky is Falling" ways...

Tannehill has become adept at the pick six as well as the batted pass.

This team is stocked with potential talent at every position. But, the problem is getting all of that talent on the same page early in the season. That's on the coaches as much as anyone. However, different people learn at different rates. And, consistency is at a premium this year. Consistent players will make the final 53. That's Philbin's plan. Unfortunately, a lot of talented players won't make the roster for Miami. How many times have we seen a player cut only to go to another team and tear it up? Lots!

Tannehill has become adept to throwing perfect passes on the run.

Comedy Gold!

Fireland Now!!!

Cmon Tracyh474, you have no clue what Philbins plan is.

Yes, that is true. It is a good point as well.

Did you find the opposite to be true previously? I did, lol!

Remember RBs can no longer lower their head downs. They can get kicked out the game for that.

But for someone who hasn't played in a game since 2011, Gray looks better than Gillislee if you ask me.

Posted by: Dashi- | August 06, 2013 at 02:03 AM

I know this post is from late yesterday but wanted to clear up a misconception of the new rule.

The crowning rule has been in effect for 20 Seasons now but in the last few Yrs has been very strictly enforced(1 game suspensions, BIG fines ect..) given the media coverage of old retired players (Merill Hoge amongst them from his ESPN post) and other high profile guys going before Congress to talk about the life long ramifications.

The amount of suicides linked to this has made the issue a REAL HOT BUTTON TOPIC in the NFL today. The thing is you NEVER saw it enforced on O always n D till Trent Richardson used his helmet (as a weapon) stricking Eagles Colman under the facemask with the crown of his.

The new rule states that the Offensive player cannot use his helmet to strike the Defender around the head area at anytime either during an attempted tackle by the D, really has been coming Richardson's play just put a magnifying glass on it next will be the stiff arm under the facemask as well.

You can however put your helmet in someones gut or shoulder area just fine which is what a strong but diminutive player like Jonas Grey should do when seeking out the tough extra Yd. and should have done on the delayed hand off inside the Cowboys 10 yardline were he stopped looking for a crease allowing the LB's & DB's to close on him instead of lowering the boom to about the 2 given his innitial head of steam.

So Tannehill stinks and we still went 7 and 9 with the worst receivers in the league.

Face It
TannePUKE sucks

Has accomplished nothing but embarrassing low neg records for our beloved Dolphins franchise

0 points the last game of the 2012 season against the worst defense
0 points

0 points again in preseason game national televised

4 INTS today
Tannehill SUCKS

Get over ur self

Moore has always been better

Although Walkaah went to one practice last year and knows it all. lol

TanneFAIL is a bust
Dont see the other 3 rookie QBs that led their teams to the Playoffs sucking in preseason
and then throwing 4 more INTS the following day in practice

Home was right on TannyREACH, Martin and freakin Egnew

Home knows the Fins!

Matt Ryan struggle to win one single playoff game and that was with the best receiving corp in football.

Just how well do you think he'd have looked on our sack of woe team for the last 5 years?

Matt Ryan would have had us deep into the playoffs every year.

Too bad you wouldn't have seen any of it at the asylum.

Jake Long graded out pretty poorly last year and has serious injuries the past few years.....not sure about Martin yet but dont think Jake was the long term answer either, not for that money at least--said from the beginning that Philbin will need 2-3 drafts/years to rebuild this roster.....2 optimistically and 3 most likely--and now we're seeing "most likely"--not a shock, and I think Fin fans expectations were too high recently.....maybe lower today--they're getting there, younger and more talented roster, but they'll need another year to compete for the playoffs.....sorta sucks, but thats the reality.

How good can the offensive line possibly be if they are looking forward to the return of John Jerry? If he is the good one then this team is in BIG trouble and it's going to be a LONG season!!

Ok, enough about Long.

Can we start talking about JT now?

He was really great.

James Taylor?--yeah, he's sort of old and bald, but pretty good.......wanna talk about Tony Bennett too?

Both you and Odin are diminish in cranial capacity to the point of no return.

-OK, this is not even a complete or coherent sentence, so I'm not quite sure how to respond. How about: Yeah, sure, fine, whatever floats your boat.

Both you are totally out of your skull to think "ONE PERSON" is so obsessed with ou they would use 50 aliases in a week just to torment you.

-I never thought "it's" been just ONE person. I was just saying that I'm quite convinced you have multiple personalities ;)

-For the record, you **WISH** you could Torment Me(More Delusions of Granduer-LOL?). Neither does anyone else. You guys just make it tough to get to any competent and/or coherent Football Posts. I mean, lets be honest, it's an UNDERSTATEMENT to say you guys pile up the Garbage.

You both need to wakethefuck up. You aren't nearly that important to anyone here. Especially not me.

-Well, I hate to break it too you, but I don't come here to be "Important"-LOL. I have this thing you call "A LIFE" - LOL! This is a HILARIOUS example of just how delusional you are and just how important this place is to **YOUR**........ah.......LIFE - ROTFLMAO!

-Really YG.......I mean Really(snicker, snick). You just let the proverbial Cat out of the Bag! You come here because it makes you IMPORTANT? BRILLIANT!

-If it makes you FEEL SPECIAL YG, I now pronounce you: "King Important of the Blog"

Bhwaaaaaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaaaa!!!!

Hey Guys, YG thinks Dolphins In Depth is a popularity contest. A word to the wise, don't go getting in Snookie Ookums way either, because "He Means To WIN!"

This blog will never improve until you all start eating pea soup 3 times a week. Regular bowel movements, like great sex, is a key component to your physical well being and overall happiness.

Few if any of you here are happy. It's like you suffer from constant irritiable bowel syndrome,

just got back from the crapper.....what did I miss?

Wouldn't it be nice if we could filter out all posters who use the moronic and chilidish ROTFLMAO?

Benz, crapping at this hour is a sign of a poor diet. You should be crapping first think in the morning.

Eat more pea soup. Also oatmeal is good, but not the instant processed sugary crap. Steel cut oats.

3rd crap today.....flowing just fine.....love pea soup, but unfortunately its not easy to find......not "good" pea soup anyway--you know, thick, hammy....pea-y. Not sure about steel cut oats......does not sound very good......dont think "steel and cut" should be going down the old gullet.

hoping for 10 wins.......would take 9.....thinking 7 or 8

I see everyone from the Taint Club is here. Man do does know how to throw a Partay. 2 Snaps and a Twist.

Remember the rules my loves, Bears on one side, Twinks on the other.

P.S.- Remember to eat your Pea Soups. We don't want no mishaps on the Conga lines this year. I lead the way like back in Havana. Hands on Shoulders, Not Waist.

ALoco is the pea soup master.

ALoco serves pigeon peas and lima beans. And home made aju from the bull in his back yard.

The Miami Dolphins suck. The new uniforms are not TIGHT enough.

And I look like a Retro Buga rrón with my Rainbow Dolphins Kickers helmet, the new logo isn't gay enough. The guys no longer want to play Hike with me. Now they only want to long snap with in-yur-ass. He is always up on the latest fashion. He was the first to rock the Daisy Dukes with the Jock Strap on the outside.

I find it offensive I can't say buga rron on a Cuban Blog. I am what I am. And Proud of It. Fidel would let me say it.

You know we run everything. We are the Bosses of Miami. We know more football than everyone. We are just smarter and tougher than everyone.

I use to own a Hospital back in Cuba. I even made myself a Doctor. Now I work at Navarro.

Must amit, last season Tannehill didn't have much receiving talent around him........

However, wth does that have to do with how wildly he missed his receivers on those slant patterns Monday night? He keeps that up and all of our recievers last names will have to become "GUMBY". Its the only way they'll consistently catch those kind of passes, no matter how great they are.

Making things worse, 1st practice after the short hof game outing he "THROWS 4 PICKS". Do some of you need to be hit over your dense lead skulls with a 50lb sledge hammer to connect the 2?

With some here its like being caught by the wife or girlfriend in bed with another woman and saying:

"Honey, are you going to believe me or your lying ass eyes."

We have tv sets and watched the game too you know. It aint our lying ass eyes.

Some here throw the "STATISTICAL NUMBERS" from the hof game into our faces. No, they don't lie, but you fail to include the most important stats of all:

Fumble at the 8yd line = 7pts

Pick 6 = 7pts

The most important stat of all say the Cowboys won. We marched up and down the field, but, it was never enough to overcome getting out of our own way.

Same script the last past decade. Yet some of you say be optimistic. Many of us have, but after a decade of the exact same results, we choose to become wiser. So whats wrong with becoming WISER homerales?

I hope you are not insinuating Tannehill was responsible for the pick 6.

Right Sweet Cheeks.

With some here its like being caught by the wife or girlfriend in bed with another woman and saying:

Its not 2 questions, it only one question idiot:

Which one are you, the wife or the girlfriend?

You struggled with English class, didn't you pal?

I hate when they use Real numbers from the game, also. I always like to make up my own Stats, In-yur-ass. I don't even know why they keep score. I usually pick the Team with the TIGHTEST pants. And looking at the new Uniforms, the Dolphins will do a lot of Winning this year.

How do you feel about playing Hike later, In-yur-ass. Shorts Vs Skins.
