Bad day for consistent Dolphins offense

I'll say this for the Dolphins offense: They're being consistent lately.

Problem is they're consistently not very good.

Today was simply one of those days in that Mike Sherman's unit looked bad. They kind of resembled the same unit that didn't do much against the Dallas No. 2 defense on Sunday night in the Hall of Fame game.

Mike Wallace, who is getting closer to practicing but isn't quite there yet, did not work in full drills again today. On the bright side, John Jerry, who has missed two weeks and is about to start his third week away, seems to be inching toward getting back on the field. He was on the side early in practice rehabbing his knee. He will not play Friday against Jacksonville, however.

As for the people on the field, think Ryan Tannehill bad and Chad Bumphis increasingly good.

Tannehill threw three interceptions to defensive backs (two to Will Davis and one to Brent Grimes) and then had another ball tipped at the line of scrimmage, which Kheeston Randall intercepted and then fumbled away. So four interceptions on the day for Tannehill.

"Frustrated by today," Tannehill said. "It wasn't a very good day. It was frustrating. But I'm definitely moving in the right direction if you take out today. Frustrated with the day but we'll go back and make the corrections and go forward."

Although he recognizes Tannehill is assigned all the interceptions, offensive coordinator Mike Sherman said they're not all his fault.

"Offensively as a group we didn't have a good practice today," Sherman said. "I wouldn't put, even though they all go under his name, I wouldn't put them all on him. We had some young receivers out there. We had a lot of pressure today. But he'll have better days and today wasn't one of his best days; it wasn't one of our best offensive days."

Despite the offensive struggles, Bumphis is thriving. He caught no less than six passes in team and seven-on-seven drills. The kid led the team in receiving in the scrimmage and the Hall of Fame game and he's continuing the trend to the point he was working with the second unit today rather than the third string he was on last week.

Bumphis has obviously caught the coaching staff's collective attention.

"When Chad was in college, he played the inside slot receiver," Sherman said. "People's observation of him is he's not the fastest guy in the world. He's not the biggest guy in the world and so that's why he ended up an undrafted free agent. I do think he understands how to play that slot receiver. You have to be nifty and crafty and he appears to be that.

"He's done some good things. He has some things he needs to correct. He was on the back end of the interception for a touchdown when he kind of floated into a route instead of defined it a little more but that's part of being a rookie. We definitely can fix that. He's shown some out here and has a ways to go but he's a good guy to work with."

(By the way, I thought Jeff Fuller also had a very productive practice. He had four receptions that I saw. He was today's next most impressive of the receivers vying for the No. 4 and No. 5 jobs at WR.)

Asked if there were any other first-year players that caught his eye in the HOF game, Sherman said there weren't any. Yikes! The OC did volunteer that Josh Samuda, who played both guard and center in the game, distinguished himself with good work.

Ironically, even though Samuda played well, the Dolphins used Lance Louis with the first team offensive line during a couple of practice periods today. Samuda was in and out, suggesting he was nursing some physical issue.

Speaking of physical issues, running back Lamar Miller limped off the field toward the end of practice and didn't return. A trainer was looking at his lower right leg. He did say afterward he was fine.

The Dolphins got only limited work from backup Pat Devlin today but he is not seriously hurt to the point the club is about to sign another QB at this point. Randy Starks (knee) continues to miss practice while Jared Odrick (groin) was back on the practice field today.

Coach Joe Philbin, talking for the first time since he studied the game tape following the HOF game, said he was not pleased by either the offensive or defensive line in the game.

"I was a little disappointed in both offensive line play and defensive line play," Philbin said. "You don't play defense and average 5 yards a carry for an opponent. That's not good run defense. Were there some good flashes of play? Sure, there were good flashes. There were some signs but we have a lot of work to do."

It has been abundantly clear that Jonathan Martin is among the offensive linemen needing to improve. Well, for the second consecutive practice he did not give up a sack today. And Sherman seems upbeat about the team's prospective left tackle.

"Any left tackle in this league in his second year is a work in progress and Jonathan Martin is as well," Sherman said. "It's a premier position and I don't know any left tackle outside the Jonathan Ogdens of the world and Richmond Webbs of the world can walk in and effectively do the job play after play.

"I'm pleased with his progress. Does he have a ways to go? Yeah. But I expected that going in. He's working to get better and he'll be a fine left tackle in this league if not a really good one."

On the defensive side of the ball, Will Davis had two interceptions today, as mentioned above. But he has to do some work on his tackling technique before he makes Philbin happy.

Philbin is quite pleased with the work of Derrick Shelby but as to the team,  the coach said, "There's nothing we don't need work on. It's not uncommon this time of year."

The Dolphins today announced the extension for Reshad Jones, who seemed relieved the negotiation is over.

"It feels good to put it behind me and do what I do," Jones said. "They said they were going to do it and it just proves how much these guys trust and believe in me on and off the field."

Android 17, you are an idiot.

The purpose of showing the stats was to prove if it wasn't for pick 6 or fumble, Dolphins played a decent game.

Matt Ryan struggle to win one single playoff game and that was with the best receiving corp in football.

Just how well do you think he'd have looked on our sack of woe team for the last 5 years?

Posted by: Think about it | August 06, 2013 at 11:18 PM

Matt Ryan would have had us deep into the playoffs every year.

Wow! I'm not accusing, just wondering.

Is this PROOF that this Troll actually "Pre Fabs his Trolling posts with multiple windows open and got it backwards? Got confused trying to have a conversation with himself?

ROTFLMFAO at this pitiful, pathetic Human being........I mean, **IF** that's the case. Again, I'm not accusing, just pointing a few things out.

Ireland's Dolphins ... nuff said...

We just did not realize that Tannehill was so far back in his development as a QB. Still, he has all the physical tools and is very smart. We are just hoping that that confidence moment happens sooner rather than later.

What I don't understand is, why all of the whiners don't just switch teams. I'm sure the jests would be more than happy to take all of you "fans" in.

This season is OVER!!!

Not really! A 4 int practice is definitely not good no matter how you slice it but Tannehill had 5 straight practices and a scrimmage without an int. He was due for a bad practice. He is not a finished product, yet. He will have practices like this he will also have games like this. I am still a believer he will have a good season. He will have some ups and downs but he will hit his stride where he goes 3-4 games in a row on fire and then hit a bad game or 2.

Have patience guys. He is still growing as a NFL QB. He also didn't have his #1 WR and his #2 just came off the lamb and isn't taking all reps yet. We weren't at practice to see who did what wrong. Maybe Tannehill was over confident and was throwing at Will Davis (2 ints) and Davis made him pay. Maybe the WR didn't cut his route off. Regardless, 4 ints is ugly but there will be days like this. Just have some perspective on the growing pains of a 2nd year QB.

What I don't understand is, why all of the whiners don't just switch teams.

The majority have switched teams. Thats probably why the stadium is half empty on game days.

Should have drafted Russell Wilson or Colin Kaepernick when we had the chance.

Tannehill is good but not great

I'm hoping we can copy the Ravens 2000 season...crushing defense & average offense with Trent Dilfer at QB

So far in camp & HOF game, Tannehill has tossed more INT's than TD's

....nuff said

I'm not worried about T-hill one little bit. It's kind of tough and possibly unfair to judge his play with a patchwork Oline and without his best WR's. Not to mention this defense is pretty darn good. Can't be easy to play those guys everyday.

The simple reason I believe in this team? The defense. I have a lot of faith in this veteran defense and very promising young players to keep us in a lot of games even if T-hill has some bad games. Which he will.

@ 8:34, that is completely untrue and if you only listen to Mando, this is what he will lead you to believe.

But fact is Tannehill went almost a week straight of practice without throwing an intercpetion and you know what, he didn't mention it once. he proceeded to put up blogs about 2nd team guards and a hat our centre wore when he was drunk off his arse.

For those that wonder, this is my problem with mando. he's not objective, he's overly negative and only inceites the negatives.

Does anyone really expect him to be a top 5 qb this year? he doesn't need to be for this team to be good if everyone is healthy and plays just their career average season...

Honestly for me, if he can finish somewhere around 15th in NFL rankings for QBs then that will be sufficient. Keep the turnovers to where they were last year and increase his passing by about 7 tds and 700 yards and I will be a happy fan.

What about the defense you know the other half of the team? Are we missing the story about them and not giving them their due credit? It's quite possible these guys can just be flat out dominate and one of the elite in the game. A lot of those guys are having great performances this preseason. Grimes, DJ, Shelby, Davis, Odrick, Vernon...

@ 8:55... now you should know better than that ...

nobody on the Dolphins is capable of anything good according to our beloved writer... or our great trolls..

What I don't understand is, why all of the whiners don't just switch teams.

Posted by: Bill | August 07, 2013 at 08:08 AM

The defense gave up 4 first downs and 96 passing yards to the cowgirls. Could that be a reason T-Hill has struggled passing against this defense? Maybe they are very good?

Markie Mark, Tannehill was the number 8 pick in the draft so eventually he has to to be a top 10 QB or will be considered a bust. This is a QB league and the Dolphins will go as far as Tannehill takes them. Luck, RG3 and Wilson are far ahead of him look on the bright side he's right there with Weedon.

This is a bad football team.

speaking of football,
hey,the stadium was full for once last nite,

don't matter if u'r the '85 bears, if u on da field fo 40 minutes u lose.

hmmm. who was shermans qb at a + m again?
and what happened 2 sherman at a + m again?
and who is shermans qb at the nfl again?

Truth, I do agree but who says that it has to be in year 2?? A qbs career is long hopefully and he has plenty of time. The list of qbs who took time to develop into top qbs is also long. Even Dath Vader himself - Tom Brady didn't really become a stud qb until his 4th or 5th year. As long as Tannehill isn't singlehandedly blowing games ans shows signs of progression, isn't it in everyone's best interests to see where he can take it??

as long as thenne is playing against the other teams 7 + 8's,
he has a chance.

Disagree with the copycat of my screen ID above. This team will go as far as this defense takes them. Isn't it obvious that this is the strength of this team? T-hill only has to manage the game at this point. Maybe they are asking too much of T-hill with this patchwork line and without his best WR's?

Another thought too what about the running game? Miller and Gillislee were breaking off some pretty sweet runs. Maybe this should be a run first offense and pass second?

mark the joe is gonna b empty,

don't worry, it was a 1 pm practice and that's why tannehenne threw 4 pix,
the Phins always play bad in 1 p.m. games.just don't play at 1 pm.

truthhurts, Ive been commenting on this blog with "Truth" for years lil buddy. Anywho, unless the Dolphins have the 2000 Ravens defense (ah No) or the 2001 Bucs Defense (Nope!) to say youll go as far as the D takes you is nutz. Tannehill will determine the type of year the Dolphins have.

Mark, QB's are given at most 3 years at the relams of QB if they dont get there team to the playoffs or at least a 500 or better record they will be on the way out. What did the Dolphins give Henne 3 or 4 years?

I expect this Defense to pitch a couple shutouts this Season. They are that good.

With that said, I don't believe T-Hill will be throwing picks like crazy.

Out of 16 games last year. T-Hill only had 2 games with 3 INTS. While he had 9 games with ZERO INTs.

And I expect him to get better.

But to keep repeating the same negative nonsense everyday is like a ritual here for some.

So switch names 50 times and repeat the same thing 100 times. Since you have nothing better to do than hate.

And Yes, it is called hate when every other word out your mouth is something negative.

And Don't give me this Decade long losing BS. That just makes some of you sound like Vengeful little B'tches.

Has Ross owned the Team 10 years?

Has Ireland been GM for 10 years?

Has Philbin been coach for 5 Years?

This is Philbins 2nd Season as Head Coach. But then again, some of you are still mad the Dolphins lost in 73 when you were 8 yrs old, or was it 83. Who cares, you are still mad about what happened in 93, and then in 03. Maybe 2013 will be the year you can stop being a fan. For all us Real Fans.

Everyone check this out. Dashi thinks Spo is a bad coach because the Heat have been to 3 str8 championships and won 2 but thinks Joe Philbin is the second coming of Don Shula, take about having your rose colored homer glassess on, you lose all credibility with your post writing ish like that. Thats the TRUTH!

Truth, I do agree with you on the amount of time given to a qb. however, we are only one year into the Tannehill era so can we at least see where this goes. 7 wins on a cripple offense in year one including a comeback win on everyone's favourite Russell Wilson wasn't exactly horrible. is there room for imporvement? lots .. but can we at least give it a chance first??

Mark, I hope Tannehill turns out to be a stud. I really do. Some of you may dislike Armando but you have to realize he's been covering this teams for what 20 or 25 years, he's seen Marino in his hey-day in practice. Mando talked about in Marino practices the ball rarely touch the floor and Marino was the superstar of practice since his rookie season in the league. So if anyone can tell us if Tannehill can be great its Mando, cause he's seen one of the best to do it.

Dashi, WELCOME to Fantasy Island.

Anybody could've coached the Heat to 3 Straight Titles. Yet, somehow he couldn't.

Spo is a bad coach because the Heat are in Year 4 of the Big 3 and they still have ZERO IDENTITY and are HIGHLY INCONSISTENT.

The Heat have no reason not to go 72-10 this upcoming season. Yet, watch them Underachieve.

You don't think hey underachieved last season? 29 game winning streak and they barely Win the Title. They should've cruised thru the Playoffs.

Some of you don't have standards. Or Never watched Greatness Before.

Jordan and Phil did More with Less.

LeBron is more Talented than Jordan. He has just never been given a Real Coach to Teach him and to Lead him.

The Heat should be going on their 4th Title in a Row.

When the Heat lose it isn't because the other Team was better. They lose because they got out coached.

And That's the Truth, Truth.

The blueprint is there for how this team will succeed. It's the Baltimore Ravens, they did with defence unlit Flacco got better.....and he did every year, culminating with a Super Bowl victory last year. Now can we do it the same way? I think we can. I like this defence a lot. What has to happen now is for Tannehill to keep growing and getting better with this offence. I think he's good enough, smart enough, athletic enough and hard working enough. Now lets see him do it.

or 0-5
the phans will diktate to what ross will do.
moore in after the bi.
deal wit it u f'n homers.

Truth, players do improve and for a while Tannehill was ripping it up in proactice. For some reason, mando never mentioned it. he had a bad practice and within a couple of hours there's a blog topic up on a bad practice. now if this becomes the norm, I won't be happy. But it hasn't been the norm. but yet this is the story Mando has painted.

Really, 5 passes and one bad practice is all he wants to talk about. For some reason the 6 practice days in a row where he was playing well simply get lost for some reason...

Dashi, your making yourself look dumber and dumber by each post....

The Heat identity is "SMALL BALL" you know when they put Lebron at the 4 and Bosh at the 5, they spread the floor so Lebron and Wade can have the lanes to themseleves so when they drive they can kick it out to the shooters, the opponent cant leave the shooters cause Lebron and Wade will make them pay or if they dont leave the shooter no one can stop Lebron or healthy Wade one on one.Do you even watch the Heat play??

Who cares avout 72 and 10??? Its about titles so your going to over exert yourself at work everyday???

So now barley winning the title is a bad thing. THEY WON THE CHAMPOIONSHIP, what more can you ask for who cares how many games it took. THEY WON!!! BTW wasnt Wade playing with one kneee??? Maybe that had something to do with it

So Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, Grant, Kukoc, ROn Harper werent decent NBA players??? You call that less??

When and if they lose its not because they got outcoached its because the other team have a dominant big man, I doubt the Heat would win against Shaq Lakers of the 2000's just because Shaq was soo dominant.

Dude seriously you know nothing about basketball, give it up, I seriously doubt your football knowledge as well.

Around the League

2 more days, so we can get bombarded with the same trolling. Well they will be crying for Chad.

With that said, Has anyone seen a young Mando in the Haines Commercial.

The one he is in the Movie Theater and Jordan rips the Tag off his neck.

I agree with you 100 percent. I appreciate Mando's blog but sometime I just don't get his motives. He never gives credit where it's due and on the other hand he rips guys every chance he gets. It must be a media thing. Maybe his blog hits are much higher when he has negative reporting. It has to have something to do with it. He post's columns on twitter with different wordings but the same columns hours or a day apart so when you click the link thinking it's something new it ends up being the same. So I guess hits is all he cares about sometimes.

Henne is an UFA after this season.
If Tanne fails then Ireland, Philbin, Sherman & Tanne will be gone and our other favorite QB will return to fulfill Ross' prophecy.

At some point...if the offense keeps stalling with Tannehill under center, we'll need to discuss Matt Moore.

Seriously...if we start 1-6 do you insert Moore?

I hate jumping to conclusions, but we need to have a plan in case Tannehill fails.

Dashi, your posts remind me of that old Jim Carey movie "Dumb and Dumber"

The Heat identiy is "SMALL BALL" you know when they put Lebron at the 4 and Bosh at the 5, the reason for this is the Heat dont want to clog the lanes with big men. The lanes are open to Wade and Lebron so they can either choose to dish it to a shooter or take the opponent one on one if the opponent doesnt choose to help.

Do you even watch the Heat play??

Also so Pippen, Rodman, Harper, Grant, Kukoch werent decent players for the Bulls?? Are you serious??

They wont the championship!! Who cares how many games it took or how close to losing they were they WON!! BTW didnt Wade have a bum knee the whole time in the playoffs?

If the Heat struggle its because the opponent has a dominant big man killing them not cause Spo gets outcoached, I doubt the Heat win if they would go aganist the Lakers in the early 2000's because Shaq was sooo dominant.

Im not sure whats worse your baketball knowledge or football knowledge, lets just agree there both putrid at best.

Sorry man, I put no stock in your 'Armando's seen Marino, so he'll know if Tannehill has it' theory......NONE. A monkey could have told you Marino was a star player. Armando's a beat writer who covers the team, not an NFL scout, he knows as much or as little as the average fan. It's his job to make the words on the page look good, not to analyze players. I like Armando but lets not get confused thinking he's Ron Wolf.

No comments on the Phins right now because the same arguments are being made and there's no new blog up. But I will comment on this because I've seen you two argue about it for a while now and I can't bite my tongue anymore.

"Everyone check this out. Dashi thinks Spo is a bad coach because the Heat have been to 3 str8 championships and won 2"

It seems to me your contention is that Spo is a great coach because he has been to three championships? You know what? Lebrons sneakers have been to three championships as well does that make them the best sneakers in the sneaker world?

Meaning, come onnnnnnnnnnn already are you serious? The guy isn't a horrible coach but he is along for the ride on that team. A great coach takes a bad team and makes them better, has them contending for the playoffs. Spo was handed the best team in basketball with a player SO dominant he will go down as the best player in NBA history when it's all said and done. And you want to credit Spo? Too funny. When Lebron leaves Miami in two seasons we will see just how good this guy is. Until then enjoy the ride, just like he's doing.

Craig...I recall having the "it" discussion with you regarding Henne a few years back.
Everyone on this blog knew Henne did not have the "it" factor and I'd argue we all feel the same about Tannehill.

Russell Wilson, Colin Kaepernick, RG3 & Andrew Luck have 'it' and guess what, they all bought their teams to the playoffs last year.

I have a saying: "Talent shows up early and often".

Craig M, your wrong, Mando been at practices he's talking to his so called sources inside of the orgainziation, the majority of us have never done this. Is he as qualified as a NFL scout prob not but more than you and I for sure, have you been to a practice?? Did you see what Marino looked like in practice?? I doubt it, the reality is his seen greatness before we did.

I'll predict that Lamaar Miller won't be our starting RB all season. I think he'll prove to be too inconsistent. Great in flashes but he'll disappear at times when needed. I also think if the team struggles that we might see Moore at QB at some point, he's a ver capable backup and has shown he can get the job done. It's important that Tannehill and the offence get off to a good start to the season.

hey 78, an italian salute ~ just 4 u. " ..!.. "

Phins78, do you realize Spo got the Heat to a number 4 seed with a pothead in Beasley and broken down Jermaine Oneal prior to to Lebron coming to Miami??? I swear some of you are so clueless!! Im not saying hes the greatest coach in the world Im saying he's a good coach.

How many championships did Lebron prior to Miami???? A big fat 0. Please name a great coach who took a bad team and won something with them without a SUPERSTAR? The NBA is a superstar league you need them to win all championship teams had them.. YOU guys are so idiotic I cant believe Im wasting my time responding to you nimwits.

When the Lakers had Shaq, Kobe, Gary Payton, and Karl Malone did they win the championship. No just cause you have a great team doesnt mean every other team lays down.

SMH at some of you imbeciles

1-6, 0-7??

Why are we talking about these things?

The team is 0-0 and has only played in the most useless football game outside of the pro bowl (HOF game).

And by the sounds of it from everyone other than Mando the team is markedly improved over last year. Tannehill has matured (how much only time will tell), we finally have a deep threat that can play, a TE to stretch the seam (may actually have three of them), a pass rush that can match the dominance of the NYG of a few years ago in terms of depth, and we may have stolen a Pro Bowl CB off the scrap heap.

But people are already pointing at 0-6, and 1-7? A bit premature I thnk.

Ok, man....you stick to your theory, he's a beat writer who puts stories together. He's never been trained to be an NFL scout. It's a talent bud.....those guys work very hard at what they do. If you believe that watching practice and 'talking to sources' qualifies you, then so be it. I don't feel the same way.

Again I'd say your comment is a bunch of hogwash. Did it show up early for Drew Bree's? For Kurt Warner? Tony Romo? Tom Brady? Did they have the 'it' factor right from the get-go? I think it's clear they didn't. Lots of people missed on these guys.

And for the record (for the millionth time), I never said Henne had 'it'. For the same reason, I gave above you have to give a QB time to show what he has before moving on. So many were ready to move on after a few games. How did Thatwork out with Brees?

I think we'd all agree the talent is improved on the field. But like the Jays this year and the Eagles from a couple of years ago it doesn't mean the team will be improved in the win column. A lot is up in the air right now and it will depend on how the team comes together. A lot of question marks right now.

if Russell Wilson has "it" and tannehill doesn't....then how is ryan 1-0 vs Russell....hmmmmmm

Small Ball?

Then why did they sign G.Oden?

Why aren't they running a Fast Pace Offense?

From game to game they switch identities. It was the Finals and the Coach was still experimenting with Starting Lineups. When everyone knew Birdman should be starting at Center with the Big 3.

The Heat offense is Lebron at the Top dribbling the ball for 10 seconds and then he decides what to do. Do you watch a Heat game?

Lebron is the Coach. The Players run the Team. The HC does what the players want, not Vice-Versa.

And No, Jordan's team were never this stacked. The Heat roster has earned over $1B off basketball contracts alone. Jordan only played with 2 other HOFers/Allstars. The Heat had at least 8 guys on the roster that made the All star game at one point in their career.

Grant, wasn't with the Bulls on their 2nd 3-peat. And he was average when he was.

Was Jordan's #3, C.Bosh?

C.Bosh is being grossly misused.

Actually all the Heat players have been Grossly misused. Bosh went from a 25 and 10 guy. To a 15 and 5. You can spot 4 other guys who numbers also decreased dramatically with the Heat. So UD and JA can see minutes and Miss Shots.

D.Wade is being ran into the ground. They should be pacing him better with the talent on the wings the Heat have. Else he won't make it to the end of this Contract.

I could keep going. But I will only get Mad from the Incompetence from the Heat HC.

This is a Football Blog. I know you want to talk basketball with Dashi. But that is another blog. And A couple months away.

I tell you this though. J.Goodman will do a better job covering this team than Mando will.

Craig M, never been trained to be a NFL scout??, whats so hard about observing a QB to see if hes doing good or not if a QB goes 24 for 28 at practice with 4 TD, thats good 15 for 30 with 1 td and 2 int thats bad, you guys make it harder than it looks its a stupid game. Now trying to program a drone is difficult not being a NFL scout. Dunce I tell ya.

Truth not trying to pile on but you kind of lost me too with the Mando has seen Marino so he knows good qbs thing.

Some of you guys must post so much simply because you get some weird, visceral thrill seeing your name there.

It can't possibly be because you think you're writing anything even remotely interesting or intelligent.

Except 2watt, of course. He comes across as an absolute genius.
