Dolphins enter decision time

Decisions, decisions, decisions.

The Dolphins have to trim their roster from their current 75-man limit to 53 players by 6 p.m. Saturday and that means the personnel department and coaches are probably making calls that will affect careers as we speak.

One key question is whether the Dolphins will keep two quarterbacks or three quarterbacks. Ryan Tannehill is the starter. Matt Moore is the backup. And then there's Pat Devlin, who was asked late Thursday night if he thinks the Dolphins should keep three QBs on the roster.

“Absolutely," Devlin said with a wry smile. "Absolutely. I mean, there are pros and cons to everything and the coaches have to take all of that into account."

Devlin (pictured below in a Joe Rimkus photo) has not been told one way or another what the decision will be. Basically, it will boil down to whether he's one of the best 53 or not. That's how the Dolphins want to look at it. They think there is enough room for adjustment within their decisions that they can vary the number of players at key position.

DevlinthrowIn other words, the team doesn't feel it must keep a tight end or five or six wide receivers, or four tight ends, or three quarterbacks. If, for example, the third quarterback is a better player and fit on the team than the fullback, then the QB makes the team ahead of the FB. If the fourth tight end is a better player than the fifth receiver, then the fifth receiver is in trouble.

“I think we’re open to any combination," coach Joe Philbin said of the wide receiver spot. "There’s been no decisions made as to how many we’re keeping."

Devlin had his best performance of the preseason. He completed 22 of 38 passes for 259 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. The night didn't look quite nearly so good when he first left the game late in the third quarter. At that point he was 17 of 30 for 167 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.

But then Aaron Corp suffered an injury (either to his shoulder or collarbone, it's unclear as the Dolphins do not report injuries) and Devlin was thrust back into the game.

He then completed 5 of his next 8 passes for 98 yards and a touchdown. The touchdown was a 56-yard connection to Marvin McNutt.

Now, that's the way to make a statement.

“I think there’s a lot of room for improvement," Devlin said. "I think it was fun to get out there in a game situation.  Not going against our defense, it was a lot of fun."

McNutt (pictured right courtesy a Joe Rimkus photo) obviously made a strong case to be the fifth receiver. Rishard Matthews seems to be the team's choice as the fourth receiver.Mcnutt td

“It’s definitely a great feeling to play like that, even though coaches have to make the decision," McNutt said. "I just hope that I proved enough today that I want to be here.  I want to be a guy that can step up and make a play when it counts."

The other side of the McNutt coin was in the locker stall right next door.

Chad Bumphis was clearly the most impressive young receiver in camp early on. He led the team in receptions through three games. Then something happened two weeks ago.

Suddenly, he seemed to be on the outs. He got only three wide receiver snaps in the dress rehearsal game versus Tampa Bay. And he didn't get in last night's game until late in the fourth quarter -- when he still caught two passes for 27 yards

"No idea," Bumphis responded when I asked why he'd been shelved suddenly. "I wasn't told anything. I just went in the game when they told me and did what they asked me to do. I was expecting to play more but, I mean, things happen. They got decisions to make upstairs and I just control what I can control."

It doesn't seem as if Bumphis will make the team. Perhaps the Dolphins bring him back to their practice squad. But it just seems Bumphis, exclusively a slot receiver, suddenly fell out of favor. Perhaps it's because he doesn't play all the receiver spots. Perhaps it's because he's only 5-11 and not 6-1 which the Dolphins prototype seeks.

No idea.

I do have an idea that you'll see Bumphis playing in the NFL at some point. Call it a gut feeling. Call it guessing. I just think the kid has what it takes to play in the league.

And so does he, even if it might not be with Miami.

"Either way, I was blessed just to be here," he said. 'I'm thankful for the opportunity and I'm going to continue to get better. But I know somewhere down the road I'll still be playing football. I felt I showed some good things when I got the chance to show. It will depend on team's needs and what they're looking for at certain times. We'll see how it goes.

"It will make my story that much sweeter when I do make it. When I find a home, I'll make sure I keep it."

POT meet KETTLE

The reason I don't give my condolences is that I believe DD, as well as 95% of the posters here are fictitious characters, created by 2 or 3 real posters here and by Armando to create hits.

Posted by: oscar canosa | August 30, 2013 at 05:57 PM

This may not be very far off from realiy. It is truly amazing just how many regular posters here don't realize that most of the people they are talking to are not remotely serious about a thing they say. They just type to provoke and draw in the suckers.

Uh.....

that doesn't apply WHY GEE....@ 6:10....

Mark is right....You have a very tiny grasp on the english language....you rarely use a word or phrase on CONTEXT....

boy are you a DUMB @SS....

there is no doubt that WHY GEE is OSCAR....and you...and a host of others....

POT meet KETTLE.

How many times have you complimented ETF Ear Puller? On top of that you bond with the two most vile posters here, obsessed with spitting and swalling and meth and utter immaturity.

You are are a product of the company you keep, low class ignorant slime.

Jags cut Pat McQuistan, we need to get him back before he returns to work at Radio Shack.

why are you so hard up on who I COMPLIMENT....

do you admire me that much....are my praises like water in a desert....why does it matter to you....

are you obsessed with me....

be honest...cause i'm already flattered....

Make no mistake though, soccer players are great atlhetes with tons of stamina. Anyone who thinks otherwise should check out some youtube of Ronaldinho. It is amazing how much control he has of the ball with his feet.

You can't compare the athletes between these sports. Different requirements.

I don't doubt this I work in the Maritime Freight industry and have been stationed up and down Central and South America and have attended games live even following the Honduran Nat'l League some while there. Venezuelans and most of S. America for that matter outside of Colombia and Argentina (Soccer FANATICS!) are Baseball fans but in Central America there not FANATICAL but RABID! with Soccer!

Coincidentally I had this conversation with Mark in Toronto not to long ago about an experience I had in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. They were playing the U.S. in San Pedro Olympic Stadium back around 02 in a qualifying match for the World Cup in a tournament of the Americas. I was invited and was seated in what we would call skyboxes (they call them Palco) only without the air conditioned closed circuit high end setting U.S. fans enjoy and was avidly cheering on the U.S. team led by a player named Cobi Jones were the fans seated in the lower deck under me were all sort of looking at me but alright with it at 1st till U.S. took a 2-0 lead.

I kept cheering sort of messing with the People I was with and the folks underneath started screaming ch-it at me that would make a Sailor blush! Then some threw bottles at me, the people with me actually called security who had Los Chepos (Cops) escort me out of the Stadium, those f@kers take that game to serious funny thing is they called American Football uncivilized?! Go figure!

Kris

Can YOU remember the last time you made any kind of worthwhile post? I can't either.

You are way too stupid to realize that it is your feeding of the disgusting bloggers that keeps this place in the sewer. You promote this with your utter stupidity.

50 years ago boxing was the most popular spectator sport in America.
Today it is football.
50 years from now Football will be obsolete.

Posted by: ExposingTheFraud | August 30, 2013 at 06:00 PM

Boxing was done in by corrupt Commissions (Mobbed up like a Mo F'er) drug abuse ect...

The MMA so far hasn't dealt with that form of scandal and has blown up! Football is here to stay!

I'm sure you would know @ 6:30....

you keep track of EVERYTHING I write....

SO you tell me....

hell....tell us ALL.....

sicko.....

I challenge you to write your real name here. I do, maybe Craig Miller does.

Kris takes the bait like a fish in a bowl! Hahaha. He let's anyone and everyone expose him as a fool. Sad.

Please....

you write the name of a Dr. that you stalk....most likely you are a former patient of his....and you thought the name was so funny (Oscar Canosa)...that you still snicker when you write it....

am I right?

I'm sure I am DEAD ON.....

Looking at what has happened to the Jets and Buffalo with QB injuries, I would just as soon keep Devlin. He is not a starter. He does not have a great arm. He is pretty accurate and does not throw a lot of balls away. His best shot is to try to emerge as a Chad Pennington type QB - short throws, accurately thrown. An insurance policy for now. In the next draft I would likely replace him with a more talented QB candidate to develop.

Kris maybe you shouldn't debate anyone without odin here. You are not very good at it on your own. You need odin to distract everyone with 9 pages of cut and paste.

Whats really funny...and by funny I mean sad....is that...

you (by your own admission) believe that any one that replies to you is :taking the bait".....lol....

tells US everything we need to know about your self-esteem...you don't even believe you are worthy of a reply....so when you get your @ss handed to you....they were "baited...PATHETIC.....really...

but I got a few more minutes to kill....got some more names ready?

Kris,

Read enough of your stuff over the Yrs. to know you deal with a real life everyday grind as do I and and a few others. This place is your escape to talk Football yet your letting some get to you in a way that's going to give you a coronary. I was almost done with this place myself till I realized and remembered why I came here in the 1st place. Forget about it and get back to some Football related posting.

By my count...you are up to...5 since my INITIAL post to "Oscar's" disrespectful post....

i'll bet I can get you up to 10....

Fin4life...

i'm just killing time....i am really not upset in the least....watching BREAKING BAD (on DC's Advice).....

and allowing the TROLL to expose himself with as many names as possible....

its ALL fun and games to me @ this point....

Kris,

I got a Football related one for you! Who stays at WR, T.E., LB and will we keep a FB or does Clay get yet another reprieve?

Fin4life....

I think Clay stays....dude is to talented....I think Keller's loss ripples thru this Organization and changes the way Philbin and SHerman not only coach...but who they keep....

that is why I wrote earlier...that Delvin may be a Keller causality...due to us needing to keep more TE's...

Bumphis started the preseason like hot cakes...but tailed of recently.....is that because coaches saw enough....or did he just reach his potential to fast....I think McNutt pushes him...and that is great for next year....

looks like no FB...except for what role slash (Clay) provides.....

Posted by: Kris | August 30, 2013 at 06:58 PM

Agreed! I feel the D-side will get a few axes because of the hole left by Keller with a couple of guys kept at O-skill Pos. that otherwise may have gotten the ax.

I think Bumphis like Bess before him needed to show he could handle the punt duties and fair caught everything showing nothing!

Is the Hurricane game on tv?

According to Thomas Galacia on Bleacher Report (BR), here are the Expert Dolphins 2013 Predictions:
Chris Kouffman (BR) 8-8
Peter King (SI) 6-10
David Hyde (SS) 9-7
Omar Kelly (SS) 9-7
Chris Perkins (SS) 8-8
Elliot Harrison (NFL.com) 10-6
Bucky Brooks (NFL.com) Postseason
Ian Rapoport (NFL.com) Postseason
James Walker (ESPN) 8-8
Pat Kirwan (CBS Sports) 7-9
Pete Prisco (CBS Sports) 5-11
Hal Habib (PBP) 10-6
Dave George (PBP) 9-7
Brian Biggane (PBP) 9-7
Greg Stoda (PBP) 8-8
Andrew Abramson (PBP) 7-9
Greg Cote (MH) No Prediction

That's 4 for 8-8 and 9-7
2 for 7-9, 10-6, and Postseason
Only 1 for 5-11, 6-10, and No Prediction

Interestingly enough, Armando Salguero was NOT mentioned...

Whats up with the FINS putting the slowest guys on earth back to return punts....

I woudn't mind more of a FEAST or FAMINE mentality....Thigpen is Dynamic...sure he will muff one now and again....but he is also a REAL threat to take it to the house,,,,EVERY punt....

bring in sure hands when we want to secure a punt with 5 min left to end the game....give me a burner for the rest...

Your not alone here, I never have fully figured this out either. None the less Bumphis needed to show something here and hurt his cause with alot of fair catches with room to roam and also miss-judged one in Houston if memory serves that he was lucky to get back. Add in his limitation as exclusively a slot guy with this Coaching staffs requirement out of their Wide Outs and he looks sort of on the outs.

thanks fin4life

Hank Goldberg has Fins 5-11

Your very welcome!!

Go CANES!!

Looking @ the FINS last year losses....

man...we were 2-4 in the AFC EAST....according to the following website....

http://www.sportingnews.com/nfl/roster/15/miami-dolphins

Got to win more in the Division....have to be competitive....if we don't go @ least 4-2 in the Division....we will have many problems....

GO CANES!!!!!!!!!!

NATIONAL CHAMPIONS AGAIN!!!!!!!!

Tracy,
I too have become suspicious of what mando's 'official' roll with the team is.

When the team released thier first round of cuts hey did not give a copy to Mando, that is why he was dripping the names out slowly because he had to get the info from the janitor.

Mando acts like he is the beat reporter for the team but I no longer believe that he is. Guys like Greg Cote, Adam Beasley and Jeff Darlington are given the cut list. And they don't get laid off for 2 months every year and told that is the definition of the word vacation, only Mando gets treated like that.

C'mon, f4l, write your real name here. Don't be shy.

Mando is widely considered the best Dolphin writer in the universe. Thats why he has the biggest following.

Pats going 5-1 in the Division @ worst....

that means we will have to find another way to to make up games on the PATS....

11 wins is the ONLY way to the playoffs...only one team is coming out of the EAST....

31 other teams have cut thier roster already, what are the Dolphins waiting for?

There is nothing to talk about here only fukkking speculation. Nobody knows what Ireland and Philbin are going to do regarding the Players they like or not. Except YG, odin and I. We know. Devlin stays.

well...DUH @ 7:46....

a rocket scientist you are NOT....

The point of my post was that the arrow is pointing upwards for the Miami Dolphins and the sportswriters are taking note. Some of them still think this team stinks, some think we're still a middle-of-the-road team, but the majority are seeing a 9-7 or 10-6 team that makes the postseason. And, guys like Peter King (6-10) are the exception, not the rule. I try to post facts and where I found those facts at, not made-up stuff pulled outta my yin-yang! And, when it's my opinion, I say so. And, in my opinion, too many people post their opinions as fact on this blog either because it strokes their ego or because they're just "trolling" for an argument because they're lonely and no one will play with them anymore...
Maybe they should give up "trolling" and take up "twerking" instead! Hey, it worked for Hannah Montana!

My prediction: 9-7 season (with the possibility of 10-6) and Miami makes the playoffs, but I don't see a Superbowl this year...

Got to win more in the Division....have to be competitive....if we don't go @ least 4-2 in the Division....we will have many problems....

Posted by: Kris | August 30, 2013 at 07:35 PM

Duh. Is this the best post you can make? Do you ever say ANYTHING worthwhile?

Seahawks fan now...I'll leave you losers to cry in your beers over a 1-4, 0-5 start. New era, gay uniforms...s.o.s.

Tracyh474 is a vulgar fucktard...

Such a coward....lol....

Let’s answer the Jeff Ireland question here and now. 3 draft picks and all he has to show is Clay, Egnew and Sims and question marks for the whole 2013 season. In the meantime New Orleans drafted Jimmy Graham right out of our own backyard.

Ireland and his punk “I’m smarter than you” attitude has produced nothing but loser results in the drafting and on the field.

The fact that he makes beat writers get the cut down list from the league and not the team shows his complete hatred for the fans and the media partners. Hey Jeff, here’s a reminder, you havent had a winning season without Parcells.

How about injuries? Fans want to know what happened to players and when they’ll return. Ireland thinks it gives him/the team some competitive advantage not to disclose it. Do you think Bill Bellichick ever won a game because his opponent didn’t know a back up gunner on special teams has a strained thigh?

Hey Jeff, why don’t you concentrate on bringing players into the Dolphins that will help you win games and have less concern about acting like a jerk off to the fans. Or be a man and just resign.

Every year Tracyh474 says things are looking up and every year he EATS CROW! Its so old its laughable.

dont waste a roster spot on devlin. keep a guy that can help us

Dan,
I don't think Ireland makes the beat writers get the cut list from the league, the beat writers get the cut list.
Mando is the one that does not get the cut list, that is why I no longer believe Mando has any official connection to the team.

Devlin wasn't drafted because of two reasons.

1. He played against inferior competition in college
2. His arm is not very strong. He can't throw the outs and most of his midrange passes are too soft, easy targets for NFL corners.

He hasn't cracked 3rd string for a reason. It doesn't look like he is tradable either. Remember this coaching staff had a full year with Moore and gave him a pretty decent contract.

As they say, actions speak louder than words.

WHO WON THE ARGUMENT OVER WHICH WAS A BETTER PEOPLE CUBANS OR DOMINICANS?

I'd like to know the inside scoop on Egnew. If he isn't what they thought, cut him already. He doesn't seem to have much awareness or improvisation ability. He doesn't seem to feel the game.

WHO WON THE ARGUMENT OVER WHICH WAS A BETTER PEOPLE CUBANS OR DOMINICANS?

Posted by: ExposingTheFraud | August 30, 2013 at 08:13 PM

Cuba was a major influence on 20th century music. They have a history of culture. DR really has made no mark at all on society beyond trivial stuff like a few athletes.
