Dolphins enter decision time

Decisions, decisions, decisions.

The Dolphins have to trim their roster from their current 75-man limit to 53 players by 6 p.m. Saturday and that means the personnel department and coaches are probably making calls that will affect careers as we speak.

One key question is whether the Dolphins will keep two quarterbacks or three quarterbacks. Ryan Tannehill is the starter. Matt Moore is the backup. And then there's Pat Devlin, who was asked late Thursday night if he thinks the Dolphins should keep three QBs on the roster.

“Absolutely," Devlin said with a wry smile. "Absolutely. I mean, there are pros and cons to everything and the coaches have to take all of that into account."

Devlin (pictured below in a Joe Rimkus photo) has not been told one way or another what the decision will be. Basically, it will boil down to whether he's one of the best 53 or not. That's how the Dolphins want to look at it. They think there is enough room for adjustment within their decisions that they can vary the number of players at key position.

DevlinthrowIn other words, the team doesn't feel it must keep a tight end or five or six wide receivers, or four tight ends, or three quarterbacks. If, for example, the third quarterback is a better player and fit on the team than the fullback, then the QB makes the team ahead of the FB. If the fourth tight end is a better player than the fifth receiver, then the fifth receiver is in trouble.

“I think we’re open to any combination," coach Joe Philbin said of the wide receiver spot. "There’s been no decisions made as to how many we’re keeping."

Devlin had his best performance of the preseason. He completed 22 of 38 passes for 259 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. The night didn't look quite nearly so good when he first left the game late in the third quarter. At that point he was 17 of 30 for 167 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.

But then Aaron Corp suffered an injury (either to his shoulder or collarbone, it's unclear as the Dolphins do not report injuries) and Devlin was thrust back into the game.

He then completed 5 of his next 8 passes for 98 yards and a touchdown. The touchdown was a 56-yard connection to Marvin McNutt.

Now, that's the way to make a statement.

“I think there’s a lot of room for improvement," Devlin said. "I think it was fun to get out there in a game situation.  Not going against our defense, it was a lot of fun."

McNutt (pictured right courtesy a Joe Rimkus photo) obviously made a strong case to be the fifth receiver. Rishard Matthews seems to be the team's choice as the fourth receiver.Mcnutt td

“It’s definitely a great feeling to play like that, even though coaches have to make the decision," McNutt said. "I just hope that I proved enough today that I want to be here.  I want to be a guy that can step up and make a play when it counts."

The other side of the McNutt coin was in the locker stall right next door.

Chad Bumphis was clearly the most impressive young receiver in camp early on. He led the team in receptions through three games. Then something happened two weeks ago.

Suddenly, he seemed to be on the outs. He got only three wide receiver snaps in the dress rehearsal game versus Tampa Bay. And he didn't get in last night's game until late in the fourth quarter -- when he still caught two passes for 27 yards

"No idea," Bumphis responded when I asked why he'd been shelved suddenly. "I wasn't told anything. I just went in the game when they told me and did what they asked me to do. I was expecting to play more but, I mean, things happen. They got decisions to make upstairs and I just control what I can control."

It doesn't seem as if Bumphis will make the team. Perhaps the Dolphins bring him back to their practice squad. But it just seems Bumphis, exclusively a slot receiver, suddenly fell out of favor. Perhaps it's because he doesn't play all the receiver spots. Perhaps it's because he's only 5-11 and not 6-1 which the Dolphins prototype seeks.

No idea.

I do have an idea that you'll see Bumphis playing in the NFL at some point. Call it a gut feeling. Call it guessing. I just think the kid has what it takes to play in the league.

And so does he, even if it might not be with Miami.

"Either way, I was blessed just to be here," he said. 'I'm thankful for the opportunity and I'm going to continue to get better. But I know somewhere down the road I'll still be playing football. I felt I showed some good things when I got the chance to show. It will depend on team's needs and what they're looking for at certain times. We'll see how it goes.

"It will make my story that much sweeter when I do make it. When I find a home, I'll make sure I keep it."

What happened to Darryl D.........?

Anybody want to help me out here?

He took his kids out hunting while on morphine. What a senseless tragedy.

I'd like to know the inside scoop on Egnew. If he isn't what they thought, cut him already. He doesn't seem to have much awareness or improvisation ability. He doesn't seem to feel the game.

Egnew is atrocious. But Ireland wants to keep him on the team to save his own embarrassment after trading Brandon Marshall for him.

Monte, what do you take for hemorrhoids? Is it working?

Has Ireland been fired yet?

If he's not taken either off the wire or as a FA then I can easily see Bumphis selected to be on the PS. Granted he only has one skill set, that being a slot receiver. But if a WR gets hurt then sending Gibson out wide (providing he's not the one hurt, and if he's the one hurt.....) that sets up nicely for Bumphis to contribute. He's proven that he can create space and combined with good hands, less his lack of athleticism, could contribute when needed. I have a feeling that they saw all they needed in the first three games and shut him down. It's possible but unlikely, due to his limited skill set, that someone would pick him off the wire.

Odin,

Are you here to cut and paste for the next five hours?

I thought Bumphis shriveled under pressure. He bailed out on returns with room to run. Philbin asked on Hard Knocks if Gates was a football player. He asked the same of Bumphis and got his answer.

His Father past away just the other day and oscar posted it was no big deal given he isn't real, you see canosa makes Darryl for a troll name someone's been using for all these Yrs. on here. Never mind the fact the guys never given any reason to think it steadily posting about his life and restaurants through the Yrs. with no variation I could remember (and I would) while respecting everyone here! Kris really took offence making me scroll back and look for the post leaving only one conclusion that oscar's a real ch-it bag!

Being new on this blog it's hard to tell the players without a program.

Progolf667 | August 30, 2013 at 08:33 PM

Good point! I think given his skill set he may have been safer had Keller not gotten injured. Some feel that the injury opened up a spot for an extra WR but I happen to believe it actually saved Egnew. If not for what happened to Keller I think Keller and Sims would have been the only true T.E.'s kept on the roster with Clay splitting time at FB (taking the one spot there plus helping in the pass game) leaving space on 1st official Reg. Season depth chart for 6 WR's or BA player at one of the overloaded Positions (DL,DB,LB) with best ST's player probably winning out.

Prog,

Maybe there are 12 bloggers total here. At least 8 of them use many, many names...and they are the ones typically complaining about others.

The blog was better years back but the derelicts and lonely boys took over long ago. Stick around and you will see soon enough.

Armando rarely participates here, it is just a cesspool for jokers and he digs the blog hits no matter how they come.

Miami Vice pilot! Still one of the better TV Pilots I ever saw!

Watching the Canes game and man Duke Johnson looks NFL ELITE READY TO PLAY TODAY! This kid should be a top-5 pick in the 2015 draft easily!

If someone on this blog calls me an idiot, retard, etc. I take it with a grain of salt because I can't rule out the possibility!

Just popping in and out tonight looking for any news on the cuts and I come across this:

If I'm not mistaken, you fabricated the "Morphine" post about 3 years ago.

Yet, here you are, **ON A FRIDAY NIGHT** blabbering away about it - ROTFLMAO!

What a COMPLETE and UTTERLY USELESS Loser you are.

(This is definitely deserving of the "Ole" Patented):

Bhwaaaaaaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaaaa!!!!

Duke F. Johnson.

Dashi knows his RBs and I have said this guy is the next Barry Sanders. He is the truth. Best RB I have seen in a while. And I am a Connoisseur of running the football.

In the words of the infamous fat football coach Bill Parcells - "If they don't bite when they're puppies, they never will."

Prog,

Do yourself a favor and leave. Sooner or later you will see what I mean. Sooner.

Progolf667 | August 30, 2013 at 08:56 PM

There are a few on here who can talk some Football. There is also a couple on here who apparently use this blog as there form of 24/7 interaction, pay it little mind and can weed them out by writing style very easily!

Just reading the last few pages. Kris handed Mr.1001-his-ass-today.

Why does this guy even try to mess with the regulars still befuddles me.

We all know your schtick. Even down to YG and Oscar being Booty-Partners. Two 69 year olds giving each other Dirty Sanchez's on a Public Forum.

Duke F. Johnson.

We've discussed it plenty! You KNOW were I stand on Duke as well. Been watching Canes Football since Jim Kelly was under Center and there have been some GREAT RB's through the Yrs. None quite as explosive as Duke though and that's a mouth fool!

Dashi,

Anyone who says soccer players are not really athletes is a naive idiot out of touch with reality.

Your inflated opinion of yourself is shared by nobody.

You know nothing about anything.

I know it is only FAU but I like the way the U is playing.

I see The U in the BCS game this season.

F4L,

I see the Sfla Football supremacy back to how it was in the old days.

Yeah, Me and You have discussed this. Duke Johnson is the Truth.

Dashi,

Canes have dropped alot of passes in this one Fr. WR wearing #3 Stacy Coley has dropped 2 TD's and D has dropped at least 3 picks up until now. This game should be getting ready after the next score to go to half 35-3

The only question UM fans should be asking themselves is who is winning the Heisman? Duke or S.Morris?

And Dolphins should be asking themselves if T-Hill doesn't work should we draft S.Morris next season with our First Round Pick.

And Duke in 2015.

F4L,

Agreed. A lot of drops. But for first game of the season not bad. Not Bad at All. I Love what I See.

THE NCAA BETTER DROP THE SANCTIONS THIS SEASON.

Man, poozzzy is insanely good.

Al Golden is the TRUTH recruiting the backyard like JJ and Butch did! Erickson and Coker got cute looking to recruit Nationally, why? The players are in Fl, Tex and Cali, PERIOD! No need to go elsewhere unless looking at top QB's! By the way how about T.E. Walford for the U been looking good as route runner since last Yr. and a guy nobody talks about to much.

Why is it lations don't think gettign a bj from a guy is gay?

F4L,

Agreed. Golden knows that SFLA plays some of the best HS football in the Country. Golden is the Truth. I have liked him since Day 1. He understands what UM football is all about. The Fastest Athletes on Both sides of the Ball. Stack up on skill position players.

He has finally built the UM roster to his liking. Even the Depth is pretty good.

This guy reminds me of a mix between Butch and JJ.

Dashi,

NCAA (Corrupt Commission making MILLIONS on Amateur athlete's) already dictated a light tap on the wrist penalty for Manziel yet still have us waiting?! At this point with us excluding ourselves out of Bowl games I feel we have already been punished enough! NCAA (Notorious Canes haters) need to give it a rest already! Even with there BS investigation Golden is still killing it recruiting the ch-it out of Dade County.

Dade, Broward, Lee, Collier,Duval and Citrus Golden is recruiting the St. and killing the Gators and Seminoles.

F4L,

Golden has brought back the State of Miami. He has made it that all the HS coaches in SFLA go to him first with their best players. He has his Assistants talking to Freshman and Sophomores already recruiting the cream of the crop from the JV squad.

I just hope Ireland keeps that Pipeline open for the Dolphins. UM is about to be dominant again.

Ireland is the 1st GM or Scout Director, F.O. guy with the Fins to not ignore the U. I hated how after Jerry said that anybody could win in Dallas with the talent (back handed slap at JJ after the 94 split) Johnson felt the need to ignore Fl. talent and look far and wide for players from other programs to build his team. As good as Zach was and he was great, JJ F@KED up in 96 passing on Sugar Ray at pick-26 taking Gardner instead later ignoring former Seminole Randy Moss ect... Wannstedt was worse always drafting out of Schools like Wisconsin.

If Tanne fails S.Morris is a good place to start looking but don't lose sight of Teddy Ridgwater though!

Teddy Bridgewater is another Miami Product. He went to Northwestern.

But we won't be drafting the Top 5. Jacksonville, The Jets, The Bills, The Browns, and Raiders will have that pleasure.

Dashi out, have good night everyone.

I*n the Top 5.

Bridgewater is an Elite Talent.

But I Still believe T-Hill will succeed as an NFL QB. He has the Talent and Athletic Ability to be great.

OK now, Dashi Out.

Draft Johnny Manziel "Mr Football"

Wannstedt was worse always drafting out of Schools like Wisconsin.

Posted by: fin4life | August 30, 2013 at 09:57 PM

I wish we would've draftrd out of Wisconsin. Russell Wilson played right in front of Philbin.

Posted by: Dashi | August 30, 2013 at 10:03 PM

My very reason for reminding you to not lose sight of him when talking Fl talent. If your top-5 teams picking in the 2014 NFL draft hold I could see the Bills and Jets trading the pick away.

I wish we would've draftrd out of Wisconsin. Russell Wilson played right in front of Philbin.

Posted by: Gregg | August 30, 2013 at 10:12 PM

Very true but he trusted Sherman and his conviction on the bigger Tannehill. By the way Wilson just back from Baseball (MLB) was just as raw as Tanne who threw for close to 3,800 Yds and 29 Tds as a Sr. not like we drafted strictly on potential.

Gregg,

Johnny Football is a very sexy name but Manziel is fuggly !

Notice how most Pro Quarterbacks as real eye candy......

Rodgers,Brady & Eli are just dropped dead lookers !!

Why does it take so long for Ireland to get rid of his draft busts? Clay and Daniel Thomas should've been traded (first) or just released. Jerry is another, this guy has failed miserably and never panned out as a quality starting guard. Remember Chad Henne? What we fans went thru with that. Seems like Ireland is better in free agency than in the draft, at least this year.

tiredfinfan,

Agree. The way Ireland drafts we'd be far better off trading our draft picks for established players and using free agency. The problem is that Ireland wont admit he stinks at drafting.

SO WHAT WAS IT DOMINICAN OR PUERTO RICAN?

Fraud,

Kris was here earlier. He'll be back tomorrow to chat with you.

That's his problem.

Kris misses you. He was here earlier waiting for you.

Please don't feed the trolls...

They're already expecting someone to acknowledge them...

They lack self-esteem...

Their mother really wishes they'd move out already...

Tracy is boring. At best he can only post the obvious.

Tracy, what a gender confused name.

Russell Wilson is a Flash in the Pan. Pete Carroll put some talent together. But lets face it, he was desperate for a QB. Wilson just lucked out. It's easier when you have nothing too lose.

This year, DC's and particular Defenders will have his number. All of his numbers. It's all downhill from here. He's played his best football and it wasn't good enough.

Stick a Fork in him, He's DONE!

Besides all that, Tannehill not panning out will only be a temporary setback. Philbin has pretty much usurped Ireland's power and he's building a team that almost anyone can take to the playoffs. Soon we'll be good enough for John Beck to lead us to the promised land.

Posted by: tiredfinfan | August 30, 2013 at 10:49 PM

I would hardly call Clay a bust. He was a 6th rd pick who has made big plays on occasion. I don't think much of him but I think he has done better than most 6th rd picks.

Ummmmmmm...........Ahhhh........Why Gee..........

You've been posting this same post for YEARS now. And by years, I DO mean YEARS.

It's quite evident to the rest of us, I mean........being on THIS side of the screen and all. You might not realize how obvious you've made your preferences here. But.....**NEWS FLASH**......you HAVE.

We don't have a problem with your preferences Why Gee. We have a problem with how it manifests itself here on the blog. In laymans terms: Your failure to come to terms with your preferences torments only yourself.

Come on out of that closet and give the blog a break "Big Bu-oy(Wink, wink)".

It's 2013 Why Gee, you don't have to be embarrased just because you like to get the Ole Tonsils Tickled.

Not that there's anything wrong with that..........

odin who are your hotties boning tonight? the truckers at the stop?

Why Gee,

I know you're getting up there in years.

But can you actually remember way back when you actually had a "Gag Reflex"?

Don't worry, it's not like dexterity or memory. You didn't lose it because of your age. It's from getting your Tonsils Tickled on a regular basis over the years.

If you don't believe me, you can always schedule a visit with Dr. Canosa. I'm sure he'll give you a "Thorough Exam(Tickle, tickle....)".
