Dolphins enter decision time

Decisions, decisions, decisions.

The Dolphins have to trim their roster from their current 75-man limit to 53 players by 6 p.m. Saturday and that means the personnel department and coaches are probably making calls that will affect careers as we speak.

One key question is whether the Dolphins will keep two quarterbacks or three quarterbacks. Ryan Tannehill is the starter. Matt Moore is the backup. And then there's Pat Devlin, who was asked late Thursday night if he thinks the Dolphins should keep three QBs on the roster.

“Absolutely," Devlin said with a wry smile. "Absolutely. I mean, there are pros and cons to everything and the coaches have to take all of that into account."

Devlin (pictured below in a Joe Rimkus photo) has not been told one way or another what the decision will be. Basically, it will boil down to whether he's one of the best 53 or not. That's how the Dolphins want to look at it. They think there is enough room for adjustment within their decisions that they can vary the number of players at key position.

DevlinthrowIn other words, the team doesn't feel it must keep a tight end or five or six wide receivers, or four tight ends, or three quarterbacks. If, for example, the third quarterback is a better player and fit on the team than the fullback, then the QB makes the team ahead of the FB. If the fourth tight end is a better player than the fifth receiver, then the fifth receiver is in trouble.

“I think we’re open to any combination," coach Joe Philbin said of the wide receiver spot. "There’s been no decisions made as to how many we’re keeping."

Devlin had his best performance of the preseason. He completed 22 of 38 passes for 259 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. The night didn't look quite nearly so good when he first left the game late in the third quarter. At that point he was 17 of 30 for 167 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.

But then Aaron Corp suffered an injury (either to his shoulder or collarbone, it's unclear as the Dolphins do not report injuries) and Devlin was thrust back into the game.

He then completed 5 of his next 8 passes for 98 yards and a touchdown. The touchdown was a 56-yard connection to Marvin McNutt.

Now, that's the way to make a statement.

“I think there’s a lot of room for improvement," Devlin said. "I think it was fun to get out there in a game situation.  Not going against our defense, it was a lot of fun."

McNutt (pictured right courtesy a Joe Rimkus photo) obviously made a strong case to be the fifth receiver. Rishard Matthews seems to be the team's choice as the fourth receiver.Mcnutt td

“It’s definitely a great feeling to play like that, even though coaches have to make the decision," McNutt said. "I just hope that I proved enough today that I want to be here.  I want to be a guy that can step up and make a play when it counts."

The other side of the McNutt coin was in the locker stall right next door.

Chad Bumphis was clearly the most impressive young receiver in camp early on. He led the team in receptions through three games. Then something happened two weeks ago.

Suddenly, he seemed to be on the outs. He got only three wide receiver snaps in the dress rehearsal game versus Tampa Bay. And he didn't get in last night's game until late in the fourth quarter -- when he still caught two passes for 27 yards

"No idea," Bumphis responded when I asked why he'd been shelved suddenly. "I wasn't told anything. I just went in the game when they told me and did what they asked me to do. I was expecting to play more but, I mean, things happen. They got decisions to make upstairs and I just control what I can control."

It doesn't seem as if Bumphis will make the team. Perhaps the Dolphins bring him back to their practice squad. But it just seems Bumphis, exclusively a slot receiver, suddenly fell out of favor. Perhaps it's because he doesn't play all the receiver spots. Perhaps it's because he's only 5-11 and not 6-1 which the Dolphins prototype seeks.

No idea.

I do have an idea that you'll see Bumphis playing in the NFL at some point. Call it a gut feeling. Call it guessing. I just think the kid has what it takes to play in the league.

And so does he, even if it might not be with Miami.

"Either way, I was blessed just to be here," he said. 'I'm thankful for the opportunity and I'm going to continue to get better. But I know somewhere down the road I'll still be playing football. I felt I showed some good things when I got the chance to show. It will depend on team's needs and what they're looking for at certain times. We'll see how it goes.

"It will make my story that much sweeter when I do make it. When I find a home, I'll make sure I keep it."

odin you didn't answer the question.

I wonder why ;)

You didn't answer either.

I don't even want too know......(Tickle, tickle ;)

...I don't usually post this late(10:46 on the WC)read some of the blog tonight before going to bed. Funny that I was called out as a "troll" Not so much. I am who I am.

I love the Dolphins. This is supposed to be a place to discuss the team with like minded people. For some(myself included) the blog is a place to relax for a few minutes, and talk football, sometimes BS about matters of lesser importance. I cannot do anything except post my opinions. If someone out there thinks I am a fake, or has doubts about the authenticity of these posts..That is for him(or her) to decide)..Nothing I can do except keep posting my thoughts.

Nobody called you a troll, DD. We just said we are not sure you're a real person or just a nick. Put yourself in our place, I'm sure you have wondered the same as we have. Only one you can be sure of here it's me, as I post under my real name and being a Doctor I am on Internet profiles. That's one Internet disadvantage when posters are not required to use their real name. Sorry.

...DarrylDunphy is the tag I use here. Of course it isn't my real name. Darryl is my nickname..It means to error. Dunphy is a slang term for dummy(where I live) I was a recovering oxycotin junkie when I first started posting here 4 years ago.So my tag was a way to remind me at that time that I almost lost everything. I haven't changed it since, and have never posted using any other name. Not my style.

I also don't get caught up in the whole who is real, who isn't. I converse with the people I recognize, and any other poster that brings up good points. Football related or not. It is a football blog. That's it.

Some drugs have many great benefits...not useless oxy crap. Does nothing for a thinker, nothing for the creative mind. Useless drug for useless morons looking for a high, nothing more...and oxy makes people into thieves.
Seven billion people in the world...off with their heads.

I don't know who you are but I want no part of your bitterness. I have enough of my own.

I think its safe to say that Ryan Tannehill is not the franchise QB. And that doesnt mean that he cant develop into an average game manager with experience. But the Dolphins are asking him to do too much. To expect him to perform without a decent TE, RB, or OL is not going to make him look good. Shame on the Dolphins for not giving him decent players on offense to perform at even an average level.

There's no bitterness in my comments...only intelligent humor and my point of view regarding how to handle useless drain on society junkies. Excuse me for thinking...I know it's un-american.

Tannehill is a stud...and will be great...so wake up...

Tannehill already is our Franchise QB. Only time will tell how good he'll be. The guy has all the physical tools and intelligence. I do believe it's correct that they're asking too much of him with the talent around him like I said before the draft. But we'll have to see on that too.

this team is the same as the past few years.....more questions than answers.....
philbin can never seem to answer a straight question either....
WHAT'S THE BIG FREAKIN SECRET ABOUT........EVERYBODY already knows he doesn't know what the hell he's doing on offense (run or pass team?) and the team will not make the playoffs again...WASTING/WEARING DOWN a good defense as always

you have not been paying attention.

Congrats on the pub!

What's not answered that isn't obvious enough? Most coaches in the league now say next to nothing to avoid the media twisting their words and starting controversy. The rest of it is too vague to even answer. I suggest a cup of coffee.

Philbin says more than enough...and explains those things in detail...and with intellect...don't start whinning and following like our communist columnist...

Fins might stand pat at tight end????

A source told the Miami Herald that the Dolphins are content with the tight ends they have on the roster.

So after cutting Carpenter and Richard Marshall the Dolphins are now roughly 26 mill UNDER the cap. That means we could've kept both Jake Long and Reggie Bush. They fukked up again.

So happy the Dolphins are standing pat at the tight end position!

Now you're catching on.
We're being lied to by everyone, over and over.

What I want to know is where does anybody get the authority to mislead other people, for the same salary they would get for telling he truth?

Peter King sukkksssss!!!!

Devlin & Clay are overrated. We should give an opportunity to young players such as AJ Francis & Tyms & Bumphis.

Exposing yourself a fraudulent again today???

marcus trufant was cut...

Mark in Toronto, don't think you read this over the weekend, but the Dolphins brought in Da'Rick Rogers for a workout Friday.

Maybe Ireland does read this blog lol

Jonas Gray has been cut...

If anybody is clueless, it would be the idiot posting the above statement. 26 million under now, but how about next year when the cap numbers of Wallace, Hartline, Ellerbe and others accelerate all the while the cap stays flat? How much cap room do the Dolphins have then? Take off the blinders and realize that signing Long was not conducive to the long term cap plans as the Dolphins decided that 10 million+ a year for a left tackle was not getting them ANYWHERE! As for Bush, I wish he was still here but he's not. Get over it already!

UM. BCS Title Game. Can't wait til they destroy the Gators .

Duke Johnson, 200 Yds Total. In about 4 Plays in that game. One might be a Return.

Expect Coley to catch those passes. We shall let that one slide a True Freshman in his first game. I expect some Jitters. But the kid is fast.

S.Morris could've played better. If he plans on challenging The Duke for The Heisman.
Johnny Football?

The U has Barry Sanders 2.0!!

Next year?? ARE U FRIGGIN KIDDIN ME??? So we should stink this year because we're worried about next year?? IDIOT!! They could always cut or trade next year if they have to. Whats going to end up happening is the team will now stink this year AND next year!!

$26 Mil Under the Cap.

And The Dolphins don't have any more Major Cap Penalties for the Foreseeable Future.

(Plus, You can take your Extra Cap Space from this year and ADD IT TO NEXT SEASONS CAP.)

The only Real Big Contract on the roster are Wake and Wallace. You have a problem with that?

The Fins already signed R.Jones to a Long Term Deal. And They Still Have $26 Mil.

Next Year, with The Cap Space they have they will need to resign their 2 Key Free Agents. Grimes & Soliai. Plus, shop for 2-3 FAs at Key Positions that will come up during the season.

We have all our Draft Picks and should get a couple compensation picks. Bringing our total draft picks back up to around 10 picks next season. (You need them with Ireland)

This is The First Year Of The Rebuild.

Last Season was the Evaluation Season. The Cap was destroyed from the Parcells & Spo Era. Philbin had to evaluate the Talent on the roster and cut the dead weight at the end of the season.

This Year is the First Year Philbin was able to shop and make the team more to his liking.

Who would you rather have? Marshall or Wallace?

Henne or Tannehill?

Dansby or Ellerbe?

V.Davis & S.Smith or Grimes?

This is suppose to be Tannehills Rookie Season. He was suppose to sit behind somebody his first season. Tannehill shouldn't be so far in his development. He was suppose to get use to the speed of the game this year. We shouldn't have had to trade up to get Dion Jordan.

Me Personally I am Disappointed With Geno Smith. He Should be further Along. If he can't beat Dirty Sanchez. We Have a Problem. They might as well draft another QB high next season. Maybe Johnny Football!! ;-)

Or Trade for Matt Barkley with a 1st Round Pick.

The Fins will beat Cleveland 17-3.

Maybe Sanders 1.5, but the season is young.
Herb Waters gave us a big lift, and played like a star the entire game.
There is SO much offensive talent on this team. Morris needs to allow the game to come to him, let his guys do the heavy lifting. OC needs to make that happen, more slants, short routes in the middle of the field. Sideline stuff negates our receivers ability to make moves, restricts YAC.
Funny, Morris as Ken Dorsey 2. Short, short short, than BOOM, down the filed to anyone of 4 guys we have now!

This will also extend our time time of possession, and give our often overworked defense a breather.

We love Dashi!

Pat Devlin is better than Dan Marino.

Writer, don't want you to think I will ever Insult Barry. I will never insult The Great Barry Sanders. There was only 1 Barry Sanders. To me Barry Sanders is the Greatest RB Ever. Put Barry in any Era. Replace Barry with any other Great RB, on their team who would do better?

Put Barry On the 72 Dolphins. It would've been the 72-74 Dolphins, 51-0.

Agreed the season is young. But Duke is starting off where he left off.

He doesn't Juke like Barry, but Duke is Fast and has incredible Vision.

I also believe they need to let Morris Dink and Dunk a little more. The Kid has a Cannon though so I don't blame them for making everything a 20 yd route. But he has WRs and RBs that can take a 5yd pass and take it 70yds in a instant.

Heck, If I was OC I would make sure we give Duke at Least 5 Receptions a game in space.

Duke is a Weapon. You shouldn't have to give him 20 Carries a Game to get 100 yds.

Give Duke 15 Carries, 5 Catches, and 3-5 Returns a Game. (Punt and Kickoff Combined) Let him give you 200 all purpose yards a game. The kid is a highlight waiting to happen.

think about it, martin holding his own at left tackle, clabo on the right, keller demanding BIG attention in the middle, opening up gibson, wallace and hartline and then powerback EDDIE LACEY wreaking havok. ues, the fins could've entered the season with just that, a totally revamped offensive squad of playmakers, it would have been fun, and if it weren't for an unexpectedly horrible injury to keller the fins were actually ONE decision away from making all that possible. i still CAN'T they passed up LACEY 5 times! the running game might still have been surprisingly good with lamar miller had keller not been injured, the attention keller would have drawn would definately have opened up the middle of the field, but now as i see it, that big productive threat is gone, wallace will be doulbe teamed and the running game is going to suffer in a big way, but i still like to think...keller, wallace, gibson, hartline, and eddie lacey, and throw dion sims in there for the two tightend set. that would have been crazy if you look back to what last years offense looked like...

They apparently cut Chad Bumphis.

Brian Tyms also cut. Too many prospective WRs here.

Any chance in honor o cut down day you could cut a few useless, vile, idiot bloggers?

Kris Kry
ETF and his 8 other names?

This would be a fine start.

Has Ireland been fired yet?

It is surprising how few posters are here when Armando is busy as he is Today.

Bumphis and Tyms...

Grimes will be signed to an extension well before seasons end... I imagine...

On the posts about the Dolphins 26 Mil. CAP Space everybody needs to remember the team has some tough choices setting their core bunch into about 2016!

Seems to escape everybody here that Cogs is also a 2014 FA as is Clabo (1 Yr. deal) and J.Jerry is eligible for UFA. In other words we go into the 2014 FA/Draft without a LG, RG or RT under contract worth a damn on the roster. There is a reason Jerry showed up in shape this particular Off-Season and a BIGGER reason Dallas Thomas lived at RT & RG after the HOF game.

Everybody talks about resigning Solia and Grimes and I'm not sure you can secure 12 to 15 Mil. in those 2 till you address the OL! I bet my bottom dollar that the team is praying both Davis and J.Taylor are ready to take the CB spots next Yr. because they rather invest across both lines of scrimmage before giving Grimes on the wrong side of 30 big money.

It further escapes everybody that 2015 UFA M.Pouncey will command upwards of 8 Mil or so when we resign him long-term (the only sure bet to get BANK and when I say BANK I mean BU KU GUARANTEE) Had we resigned Long whose Rams Contract (like most deals today with back loaded cash and up front bonus)will be over 10 Mil. for the 2015 Yr. Here is a prediction the Rams (unless he regains 09 form which is very unlikely) will terminate Long after 2 uneventful Yrs. leaving Long a FA by then anyway for you Jake man crushers!

I think you see how Grimes is holding up for a good portion of the season...and if it is very good...you offer him a 2 year extension...too hard to find these types of DBs...and maybe we have a rookie or two like that on the roster and maybe we dont...either way you can not have too many in this era of pro football...

The Fins will let Pouncey go when its time to pay him just like they let all their good players go. Bank on it. Its the Dolphin way.
