Dolphins enter decision time

Decisions, decisions, decisions.

The Dolphins have to trim their roster from their current 75-man limit to 53 players by 6 p.m. Saturday and that means the personnel department and coaches are probably making calls that will affect careers as we speak.

One key question is whether the Dolphins will keep two quarterbacks or three quarterbacks. Ryan Tannehill is the starter. Matt Moore is the backup. And then there's Pat Devlin, who was asked late Thursday night if he thinks the Dolphins should keep three QBs on the roster.

“Absolutely," Devlin said with a wry smile. "Absolutely. I mean, there are pros and cons to everything and the coaches have to take all of that into account."

Devlin (pictured below in a Joe Rimkus photo) has not been told one way or another what the decision will be. Basically, it will boil down to whether he's one of the best 53 or not. That's how the Dolphins want to look at it. They think there is enough room for adjustment within their decisions that they can vary the number of players at key position.

DevlinthrowIn other words, the team doesn't feel it must keep a tight end or five or six wide receivers, or four tight ends, or three quarterbacks. If, for example, the third quarterback is a better player and fit on the team than the fullback, then the QB makes the team ahead of the FB. If the fourth tight end is a better player than the fifth receiver, then the fifth receiver is in trouble.

“I think we’re open to any combination," coach Joe Philbin said of the wide receiver spot. "There’s been no decisions made as to how many we’re keeping."

Devlin had his best performance of the preseason. He completed 22 of 38 passes for 259 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. The night didn't look quite nearly so good when he first left the game late in the third quarter. At that point he was 17 of 30 for 167 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.

But then Aaron Corp suffered an injury (either to his shoulder or collarbone, it's unclear as the Dolphins do not report injuries) and Devlin was thrust back into the game.

He then completed 5 of his next 8 passes for 98 yards and a touchdown. The touchdown was a 56-yard connection to Marvin McNutt.

Now, that's the way to make a statement.

“I think there’s a lot of room for improvement," Devlin said. "I think it was fun to get out there in a game situation.  Not going against our defense, it was a lot of fun."

McNutt (pictured right courtesy a Joe Rimkus photo) obviously made a strong case to be the fifth receiver. Rishard Matthews seems to be the team's choice as the fourth receiver.Mcnutt td

“It’s definitely a great feeling to play like that, even though coaches have to make the decision," McNutt said. "I just hope that I proved enough today that I want to be here.  I want to be a guy that can step up and make a play when it counts."

The other side of the McNutt coin was in the locker stall right next door.

Chad Bumphis was clearly the most impressive young receiver in camp early on. He led the team in receptions through three games. Then something happened two weeks ago.

Suddenly, he seemed to be on the outs. He got only three wide receiver snaps in the dress rehearsal game versus Tampa Bay. And he didn't get in last night's game until late in the fourth quarter -- when he still caught two passes for 27 yards

"No idea," Bumphis responded when I asked why he'd been shelved suddenly. "I wasn't told anything. I just went in the game when they told me and did what they asked me to do. I was expecting to play more but, I mean, things happen. They got decisions to make upstairs and I just control what I can control."

It doesn't seem as if Bumphis will make the team. Perhaps the Dolphins bring him back to their practice squad. But it just seems Bumphis, exclusively a slot receiver, suddenly fell out of favor. Perhaps it's because he doesn't play all the receiver spots. Perhaps it's because he's only 5-11 and not 6-1 which the Dolphins prototype seeks.

No idea.

I do have an idea that you'll see Bumphis playing in the NFL at some point. Call it a gut feeling. Call it guessing. I just think the kid has what it takes to play in the league.

And so does he, even if it might not be with Miami.

"Either way, I was blessed just to be here," he said. 'I'm thankful for the opportunity and I'm going to continue to get better. But I know somewhere down the road I'll still be playing football. I felt I showed some good things when I got the chance to show. It will depend on team's needs and what they're looking for at certain times. We'll see how it goes.

"It will make my story that much sweeter when I do make it. When I find a home, I'll make sure I keep it."

Clay Harbor was released...

This will also extend our time time of possession, and give our often overworked defense a breather.

Great post! The sideline patterns aside from negating our best assets outside also exposes a lack of size in our WR Corp. The penalty Dorsett got on the left sideline inside the 5 was actually luck given he was the one committing the interference. Our 6'5" T.E. Walford should be taking those underneath corner routes forcing the LB's away from just sitting in the middle opening up crossing and slant routes to max speed with WR's and RB's.

Duke doesn't juke like Barry (nobody in history has) but he's definitely faster than Barry. He takes a pitch moving laterally and hits a hole faster than any I've seen in a Canes uniform before and that as I said before is a BIG F'N MOUTH FOOL! On the 50 plus TD run did you catch him actually leaping across the line, I was like WOW! I don't recall ever seeing anybody do that like a hurdle jumper before?

If he stays healthy he will exceed the promise of another former Canes great whose College career was lost to injury, Frank Gore! He was just that type of runner coming out of Coral Gables along with teammate Vilma to the U in 2000. He had to re-invent himself on 2 reconstructed knees with additional 30 pds on frame as power back and reason I can't believe Vilma actually told Saints players to target Gore's knees in Playoff game a couple of Yrs. back.

Pouncey and Tannehill will be starting for this team for close to next decade...bank it...
Just like Ellerbe and Jones...maybe not as long though...

Agree for the most part!

Nah. When players get good and deserve big contracts the Fins get rid of them. Heck, no one except the long snapper has more than 3-4 years on the team.

Long isn't on this team because he has become a broken-down player.

You will have to provide some examples of this ...because frankly I don't follow...

I fully expect Sims and Taylor to be starting for this team by the bye week...or when they come back from it...

Wes Welker, Brandon Marshall, Jake Long, Reggie Bush, Sean Smith.

Wes Welker=Tom Brady...Brandon Marshall=are you kidding me!!! Good riddance...don't want men on the football team I love that routinely BEAT WOMEN!!! Jake Long=got his big contract year 1...got worse and worse the last few years...Reggie is Reggie and I like me some Reggie but no big loss for us here...plus...we could pay anyone to break dance in the backfield...Sean Smith=SEAN SMITH HAHAHAH!!! Are you kidding me!!!

Terrible examples bud...

Sean Smith?
You gotta be kidding!

I watched that pro football talk show twice this past week. The dolphins were mentioned once for about 7 seconds.

Of the people that have been let go in recent memory I would have liked to see us keep 2 from the Cameron "era"...Ginn and Satele...Hell Ginn single handedly BEAT the Jets and that alone is worth a multi-year contract...and Satele would be a nice breath of sorely needed depth at this moment...

Satele could not handle anybody in the afc east.He is no better than any of our backups, maybe worse.

As a starting nfl center, Satele would sure look good on the 2nd team depth chart right now. I guarantee at this moment he's mile ahead Samuda.

Austin Collie cut by the 49er's, could be a fit if he still can play like his colts days.

With Jonas Gray, being a powerback, you want to see this guy become a north-south runner. With him it was far too much east-west. The game losing fumble was but final nail in coffin, not primary reason for being cut.

Gray does not have the speed to run wide in the nfl. Trying to continuously do it anyway is almost unforgivable. As we see with the final cut list today.

Anybody keeping count on where were at in regards to 53?

Too bad we didn't have an outlet that keeps us up to date.

I have a very unofficial Microsoft Word Starter List(LOL....).

9 out 22 to go, odin, including Aaron Corp.

Somebody probably will claim Gray. To my eyes, he runs pretty well.

Lookithat, Pat White made the Redskins.

When will you guys understand "cut players" are cut because they didn't look good against "fellow nfl talent" this preseason. Exactly like the garbage "we cut".

Sam thing this time every season. Dolfans clamor sign this or that garbage like we're stealing a pro bowler. At most they'll be 3rd-4th string depth. If they see any action it will be 8-15 plays per game.

They may make 1 note worthy play in those 8-15 plays, or totally do nothing at all. These players are cuts for a reason folks. No matter the position they play.

I would only sign those with PS elibility, taking a stab at developing them in our system. Even that isn't guaranteed to work out. But the risk vs reward is off the charts.

Ross is too cheap to pay good players. Thats part of the reason the team stinks every year. He wont even pay for a real GM, a team president, or to fix his own stadium. The paint is peeling off the walls for Christs sake! His HC wanted Vonta Leach and Ross was too cheap to sign him!!

Okpalaugo gone.

As a powerback, Gray is supposed to consistently run north-south. During preseason he seemed to always have the itch to run east-west. He does not have the speed to be a east-west nfl runner. But he didn't let that get in his way.

Exactly why he's cut today....

Even Sun Life Company is terminating their deal with the hapless Fins.

Are Eggnew and D Thomas still on the team?

I only said that if he doesn't make the practice squad here somebody will claim Gray. I agree with you he's a between the tackles runner.

So Ireland was right about Pat White. I wonder what happened to him down here?

So Johnny FOOTBALL threw a total of 8 passes and 3 went for TD's!! College QBR's are different but his was 297!!!

The type rb missing from our roster is a guy who can at times make the first tackler miss. I have not seen evidence from even one rb on our roster capable of this during preseason. First defender always makes the tackle on our otherwise lackluster stable of rb's.

Lamar Miller is a total unknown and D Thomas is a joke.

Well, we had Reggie Bush but we let him go.

What happened to Pat White is the same thing that happened to Chad Henne and Mark Sanchez: Tony Soprano.

When you put elite talent with a moron you get shhtty results.

When you put elite talent with an offensive master then you get masterful results.

Tony Soprano is back where he belongs, coaching the OL, however from the looks of things he has already phucced up the Raiders OL.

What sucks about our rb corps is that they maybe "OVERLY DEPENDANT" upon great oline blocking. They're not going to break any tackles or make the first tackler miss. Not going to run with any great power neither.

Reggie Bush did have a talent for at times making the first tackler miss. We totally lost that dimension in our run game when letting Bush go.

Didn't we cut Keenan Davis a few days ago?

Anybody know?

I know you know.

Our 2013 run game will live or die by the ability of our oline to have absolutely great blocking for an overly dependant rb stable.

No really good veterans let go for cap reasons yet.

I'm wondering the same thing, odin, I like Keenan. I'm not sure.

I watched the Pats preseason games. Their rb's did great job of making the first tackler miss. Probably why they finished 7th rushing, even though they had a top 3 passing game in 2012.

They have a couple rb's I saw that has ability to make the first tackler miss. This forces a defense to be very discipline in their tackling technique.

Well, we had Reggie Bush but we let him go.

FWIW, Gillisslee made the first defender miss a few times against the Saints. He beat a few guys one on one as well.

I just watched the replay again this morning. It wasn't like he was amazing or anything. But he did a respectable job **AT TIMES** considering the line he was running behind.

On md.com Keenan still listed on depth chart as of this moment. So are Tymes and Bumphis. Yet Tymes and Bumphis are the only cut names heard today so for.

If Davis is not on roster, then depth chart on md.com hasn't been revised for weeks.

Working on a trade, possibly.

Gillislee made team simply because, though not spectacular, he did always run north-south hole there are not. This is what coaches want to see. Not see a guy "free-lancing" trying to hit the homerun every play.

Coaches rather see 1yd gain than 3yd loss trying to hit the homerun.

As a starting nfl center, Satele would sure look good on the 2nd team depth chart right now. I guarantee at this moment he's mile ahead Samuda.

Samson Satele was the starting Center for the Raiders and a pretty good one from what I saw given for some reason in the Sparano ERA we played Oakland every Yr. and he held his own Vs. our very good interior DL. The Colts signed him last Yr. to replace J.Saturday were he's been a starter since or don't any of you actually watch the games given we played the Colts last Yr. and they were on TV plenty?

In any event you'll see him week-2. By the way Satele couldn't carry Pouncey's jock given we have the best POWER & PULLING Center in the NFL since Kevin Mawae played for the stinkin Jets! That said if we'd kept Satele maybe OL GURU Sparano (proved what a fraud he was given his OL's) could have thought of moving him to Left or RG? God knows he wasn't the most overly powerful (remember we traded him after 08 Playoff loss at home because he wasn't able to handle Haloti N'Gata but not many can) but he is very athletic and better at what we want in the OL these days.

The running game will be pitiful without Bush, Long, and Fasano.

Guys if you go to NFL.Com you'll see a window that says NFL release tracker were it's updated on a bunch of teams yet only lists 2 official cuts by Miami Dolphins in Tyms and Grey.

Austin Collie cut by the 49er's, could be a fit if he still can play like his colts days.

He was cut in favor of Marlon Moore who spent 3 Yrs. here and couldn't keep on the field. I did find it somewhat disconcerting though that NFL Networks AM Crew were RAVING about the job Moore and rookie Patton are doing with Kaep.

Go to Phins.com, they have a feed there with Omar, Armando, Beasley, others

Our complete cut list should be posted within the next 45 minutes.

It will be really interesting to see if Lee Robinson, Jelani Jenkins, Josh Kaddu did enough to replace Trusnik, Spitler, Freeney to land on st's.

Doesnt everyone improve when they leave the Dullfins? LOL

Kaddu gone. Disappointed me this year didn't do nearly enough.

Was Ireland cut?

Dolphins playing cute. Not announcing cuts yet.

Hi oscar!

What on earth could be going on that NE they said published final cuts last year at 9:22PM?
