Dolphins lose, say they're ready

So the Dolphins lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 17-16. They're 1-3 this preseason.

So, of course, they believe they're ready for the regular season.

"Yeah, I'm ready," running back Lamar Miller said. "I just feel like I'm ready. I can help this team win. I'm ready."

He should feel ready because Miller thinks he won the starting running back job Saturday night.

"I do feel like I won the job," he said.

Miller gained 35 yards on eight carries. That's a 4.4 average. It included a 20-yard run. With Daniel Thomas gaining 3 yards on seven carries -- a 0.4 yard per carry average -- I do not disagree.

Lamar Miller is your starting running back.

WR Mike Wallace, who had three catches but dropped on pass, also thinks he's ready to go for the 2013 season.

"I hope so, it's two weeks away, so I hope I'm ready," Wallace said. "Yeah, I think I'm ready. I'm pretty sure. I'll be ready to make some plays when my number's called."

Quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who played well and delivered a 90 QB rating, believes the offense is "just a hair off."

"I think we're close," Tannehill said. "We've progessed each week and now it's exciting. Now it's time to buckle it up and play for real."

As for himself, Tannehill thinks it's coming.

"I'm progressing," he said. "I'm moving in the right direction."

Coach Joe Philbin wasn't quite as certain things are all set to go as the Dolphins have one preseason game left -- a game in which the starters aren't likely to play very long.

"We didn't play well enough in any phase of the game to win the game," Philbin said.

How about the red zone offense, Joe?

"Not good enough," he said.

Third down offense?

"I didn't think we were very good there. We have a lot of work to do."

The starting offense overall?

"I guess we were okay as an offense," Philbin said. "It wasn't great."

Michael Egnew didn't catch a pass nor was he targetted. Charles Clay had one catch on six targets. Dion Sims had one catch off his only target.

John Jerry started at right guard. Josh Samuda played with starters and on second team after Jerry left the game with approximately 16 snaps. Lance Louis played in the second half.

And then this:

For whatever struggle the Dolphins offense is having I refer you to the fact the Jets and Bills are a disaster offensively.

In Buffalo, neither E.J. Manuel nor Kevin Kolb can stay healthy. It is to the point the team will be working out multiple QBs on Sunday and one of those is former Dolphins draft pick bust John Beck.

In New York, Rex Ryan is seemingly trying to get fired. Rookie quarterback Geno Smith three three interceptions and actually stepped out of the end zone on a quarterback scramble for a safety. Bad night.

Mark Sanchez had a worse night. Ryan actually inserted the veteran into the game in the fourth quarter behind the reserve offensive line. And Sanchez injured his right (throwing) shoulder.

No words.

Hey jmike do you know how big of a nationally irrelevant punchline this franchise is now ? Hey jmike this team just blows period !! I'm just telling facts people's excitement level is always let down by this franchise !! And you wonder why people are so negative in here. Bottom line be a consistent playoff contender like the ravens. Hit some home runs in the draft, not welfare participants which the dolphins have been since 1985. Win Super Bowls damn it that's why they play the games !!

Vegas - the Patriots have been using washed up backs for several years now, and they look great because of Brady. Give RT a chance, it's preseason

Posted by:Dave

That's only partially true Dave, and a stretch at that. The Patriots have 4 good young RB's on their roster. 3 of them were either drafted or brought in as undrafted FA's. That's not finding washed up guys. That's the sign of a good Front office that finds talent. The bigger half of the equation that you are missing is that the Pats OL play is consistent.

The Dolphins have neither. So, it's not Tanny that is the key to the running game. You have to run the ball even when your opponent knows you are going to run.

Mark my words, the Fins will have trouble running the ball consistently this year. And that will help spell their doom if they can't.

Things that didn't work well last night.

1) Thigpen looked sloppy as a returner. He needs to get all the reps next week to shake it off.

2) Clay looked like he was too consumed with winning the starting TE role and not paying attention to details.....like actually catching the balls thrown his way. Wise up kid or Sims will be happy to replace you,

3) Jerry looked, as always, too slow. He caused many RB's to be hit in the backfield. Wiffed on several assigned blocks....he is Bad. Rather see Samuda learn.

4) Wheeler was non existant out there.

5) Clemons continues to worry me. First Tampa drive....3rd and 10....dump pass to the flat...Clemons is out of control...misses easy tackle...First down Tampa.

6) Gray is someone I like. I think he runs hard. He was hit too many times in the backfield due to poor blocking. But that fumble was really bad.

7) Nolan Carroll on punt disaster....that Buc would have pushed him to Tampa if Thigpen didn't get in the way. Toughen up Carroll!!

8) Incognito had a few blown blocks last night. Not a good night....maybe he should get more sleep and spend less time brawling in night clubs.

9) Backup receivers make a few decent catches but no YAC at all. Flat unit after top 3 WRs.

10) J. Jenkins? Anyone know where he is?

The Pats were god awful but they get a pass?

This team is on the rise and the Pats are declining.

I can't say I saw any of the Pats game but the stats and score speaks for its self

Posted by: JUSTIN CREDIBLE | August 25, 2013 at 10:43 AM

C'mon guy, really? There's always a couple of posters making this statement every year when the Pats lay in egg in preseason. It's juvenille and embarrasing.

Come regular season, we end up chasing them every year and they make the playoffs... AGAIN! That's why they get a pass. The Fins haven't proved squat and NE makes a run every year.

You understand now?

OKAY OKAY ENOUGH ALREADY!! C'MON GUYS DID WE GET ANY MAJOR INJURIES LAST NIGHT? NO! DID TANNEHILL LOOK AWFUL? NO! HOW ABOUT THE STARTING DEFENSE THE ENTIRE PRESEASON, DO THEY LOOK AWFUL? HELL NO? SO DO YOU ACTUALLY THINK THE STARTERS ARE GOING TO GO ALL OUT FOR A PRESEASON GAME THAT THEY DON'T EVEN EARN THERE"REGULAR PAY CHECK" FOR? ONCE AGAIN!! NO! WHAT ABOUT THE COACHING STAFF ARE THEY GOING TO GIVE CLEVELAND MORE TO PLAN FOR DURING THE PRESEASON? C'MON MAN!! HELL NO! THE ONLY THING TO JUDGE YOUR TEAM ON IS HOW THE STARTERS PLAY WHEN THEY ARE ON THE FIELD AND YOUR ROOKIES WHO ARE SUPPOSE TO PLAY.. SO THUS FAR BASED ON THAT IS TANNEHILL PLAYING AWFUL?? ONCE AGAIN NO DESPITE OL PROBLEMS HOW MANY INTS HAVE HE THROWN ?? NONE!! HAS HE MOVE THE OFFENSE DOWN THE FIELD?? YES AND HAVEN'T HE THROWN FOR OVER 350 YDS AND 3 TDS WITH NO INTS?? AGAIN THE ANSWER IS YES!! AS FOR THIS YEAR/LAST YEAR COMPARISON REMEMBER THE SECONDARY AND SLOW LBS FROM LAST YEAR?? HAVE YOU SEEN IMPROVEMENT?? YES YOU HAVE. SO MY POINT IS SIMPLE" GOOD DEFENSE AND GOOD OB PLAY WINS GAMES AND RIGHT NOW THAT IS WHAT THE DOLPHINS HAVE SO ALL YOU NAYSAYERS STFU UNTIL AFTER GAME #8 THEN YOU CAN MAKE A FAIR JUDGMENT OF THIS TEAM.. I'M SIMPLY GOING TO STICK WITH MY PREDICTION AND THAT IS 10-6/11-5 BARRING ANY MAJOR INJURIES!! GO FINS!! I'M A TRUE FAN EVEN IF WE GO 0-16!!

IMO, play calling has been unimaginative. Very few passes to the RBs, no designed rollouts by QB, no reverses to Wallace, no draws, quick hits into the line, didn't like it overall. There are myriad things you can do in the Red Zone, from QB draws, fake and run around the lines by the QB, quick traps, no corner fades to the WRs, etc.

Dolphins lose, say they're ready??

THATS HILARIOUS!

Philbin is certainly not building a winning attitude. He is now 8-16 after last night. Even Sparano was better than that.

Agree Oscar...it was vanilla and not effective, especially the runs but Sherman continued to try and pound it in the end zone against the #1 run defense in the NFL last year.

The Dolphins ARE ready! In Miami we lose with class and with our heads up high.

Oscar....it's PRESEASON.....Sherman is NOT going to shows his full game plan and break out trick plays or throw bombs to Wallace. They don't want to create any Tape for the competition to scout them on. Just watch how they become more aggressive when the games are for real. I don't seem them getting too crazy week one against Cleveland but they will bust it all out once they play top teams in the full season.

Losing to Tampa is very dissapointing. Seems we can only beat Jacksonville. Another poor season coming up folks.
5-11?

They're ready to lose. HAHA

How is D Thomas and M Egnew still on the team?

Keep D Thomas but let Reggie Bush leave?? WTF?? Is Ireland working for the Jests?

So that's a headline or something in the preseason when teams show as little as possible of their offense?

We are now past the dress rehearsal game. The most important preseason game. Next game versus the Saints everyone just wants to avoid injuries.

After reading about the Bills, Cards and Jets injuries...maybe the way to go with the last preseason game is sit all the first team. It's a long season let them all rest.

ok, can we make this somewhat productive here?.......chuck out some realistic trade scenarios for mid-tier TEs--I think our best bet is to sign a vet that gets cut.....not ideal, wont be great but should at least be able to solidify that position, and give time for Sims to develop

Our first team offense and defense has dominated the first team offenses and defenses of Tampa, Houston and jax. Things start to fall apart when our 2nd and third teamers ar in there which speaks to our lack of depth, particularly on offense. The only poor showing was against Dallas when 5 of our defensive starters and all our starting wr's didn't play. There is no reason we won't be in every game this year. As for our early schedule, ATL and NO have no defense and the ravens are a shadow of the team they were last year on both sides of the ball. Who is flacco throwing to outside of Torrey smith? (boldin and pitta are gone). We played Indy well last year in indy and should have won but for Sean smith. We will be in a lot of close games as we were last year but we are better on both sides of the ball compared to last year.

risky, but should we trade Matt Moore for a decent TE?

PLUS
- good rythm in the passing offense
- defense brought pressure and was stout overall

MINUS
- running game (but TB was by far n°1 defense vs rush last year)
- TE a non factor
- 3rd CB (Carroll)

Ireland drafted 3 TE's and they're ALL BUSTS!

Posted by: Fireland | August 25, 2013 at 01:11 AM

But I would bet that the fourth one will be REALLY good. We just need to be patient.

I love hulking black men. I take them in my mouth, and swallow EVERYTHING. They call me the basking shark.

I will let you poop and pee anywhere you want on my body for $12.00.

If I could get away with it, and not get caught I would put all of you losers out of your misery. All of you morons think your experts, and you do nothing but trash this team. Seriously, I would love to beat your brains in with a baseball bat. Get a life you losers.

Hmm..., the way QBs are going down you better keep all of them you have.

risky, but should we trade Matt Moore for a decent TE?

Posted by: benz | August 25, 2013 at 11:37 AM

I'd rather trade Tannehill for a TE before he becomes worthless just like Chad Henne was. Matt Moore is a top 12 QB and would've had us in the playoffs last year if he started.

Ireland drafted 3 TE's and they're ALL BUSTS!

Posted by: Fireland | August 25, 2013 at 01:11 AM

Ireland drafted 3 QB's and they're all busts too!

This is exactly what I am talking about hahahahahahaha. A.J. Dune would trade Tannehill for a TE because Matt Moore is a top 12 qb in the NFL, and would take us to the playoffs. If I could beat A.J. to death and not get caught I would. What a complete moron you are AJ.

If you would really trade Tannehill for a 2nd team TE because you believe Moore is a top 12 QB you should do the world a favor and hang yourself.

i think we have a great top 3 wr group. may have to change things up and use 4 wide more than a TE. mcnutt and tyms both looked way better than any of the TEs. or find a TE to play. i think sims we be good down the road. egger not so sure. cal needs to get his head straight. his route running is poor.

Name calling when your opinion isnt shared is childlike. GROW UP!

3) I didn't like Sherman's schemes in the red zone. They ran multiple receivers but they were all bunched between the hash marks. That allows the Defense to more eaasily guard the run (see point 2 above). If you go with multiple receivers you need to SPREAD the defense across the entire width of the field.

======================================================
You bring up a good point jpao. Sherman much better than we've had in recent years. But his job is to NOT make it easy for the D. Run a dig and a corner route. Overload one side, whatever. Point is, Sherman has had his head scratching moments in the past...hope it's not old age catching up with him.

as far as O skilled players go. i'd dump lane for sure. if they feel rodriguez can be an hack i'd keep him. he looked good in limited play. better than clay.
of what we have keep no more than 3 TEs. hopefully one will be someone not one the roster. keep 4 RBs 5 if you count the kick returner. 6 WRs of course the top 3. then i'd keep both mcnutt and tyms, the 6th would be matthews with bump his as an outside shot.

Hi everyone!

do you have half a brain??
just curious??

i'll use small words.
daniel thomas is still under his rookie contract so he is both fairly cheap. and UNDER CONTRACT!!!!

reggie bush is both old and he wanted both too much money and too long a deal for an RB WHO IS OLD and gets at the very least nicked EVERY YEAR HE HAS EVER PLAYED!!!!!!!

so sims is a bust after 3 preseason games???
wow we are getting a bit overzealous!!!!

jpao,

So now you know more about offensive coordinating than Sherman?

Did it ever occur to you he was trying some things for reasons well beyond your piddly tv tube ant hill of comprehension?

Ok, some things never change...like the trolls on this blog stirring things up. Ignore them!

This team is going to be okay. It's the Preseason for crying out loud! If Special Teams had cleaned their act up, and played better, and the WR's caught a couple of passes that they dropped, we'd have won against Tampa Bay...in a meaningless game!

Yes, there are lots of things to work on and clean up. I'm sure the coaches will work on those this week. But, overall the starters played a decent game. Look at what the Pats & Jets looked like this weekend! C'mon, man!

Miami goes 9-7 this year and sees the playoffs. Provided they stop looking like an adolescent boy on his first date with a girl!

2 against jets, bills, and new england.they split with the bills and jets.no way they win against pats yet though.thats 2-4. then you have cincy, ravens, pitt, and clevland.only clev looks winable and thats gonna be tough.1-3.then the saints, and falcons, potential blow outs.0-2.and the medicority of tampa bay,san diego, carolina, and indy.2-2(if theyre luck-y).and overall the fins are 5-11.sound about right

Tracy,

If this if that. You win or you lose for whatever reasons. It is always, well we wouldn't have lost if this or that. If only they didn't lose 3 extra games last year they would have won 3 more. That reasoning is senseless.

Keep D Thomas but let Reggie Bush leave?? WTF?? Is Ireland working for the Jests?

Posted by: WTF | August 25, 2013 at 11:24 AM

Ross is too cheap to keep Reggie Bush or Jake Long despite plenty of cap room. Winning isnt the priority to Stephen Ross.

but at least the jets are gonna be terrible and that means less trolls hanging here

look at the schedule and give me a good aurgumnet otherwise.keep in mind look at when and where they play becuse that factors in

The two most important stats the Dolphins have to improve on to be a winning team or better(9+)wins are two that helped them to lose against Tampa last night.
The turnover differential last night they were -3 and TD/FG ratio in the Red Zone last night they were there 3 times and their ratio was 1 for 3 .3333.
If they dramatically improve in these two stats in the regular season they will have a winning record.
They have enough talent on defense to pressure the QB and force him to throw early fumble or throw interceptions. Not to mention drive stopping sacks. The run defense might even be better than last season if the pass defense improves because they will be on the field for shorter consecutive periods of time.
The offense must capitalize on their possesions and score more TDs than Fgs in a lopsided ratio towards tds.
Having written this it is a lot harder to accomplish these goals. How many years have the Fins suffered from field goalitis when in the Red Zone.
Turnovers are the most unpredictable part of NFL football, why do you think the underdogs win so many games against the spread thats right its probably turnovers that play an important part in picking winners underdogs weekly in the NFL.

jpao,

So now you know more about offensive coordinating than Sherman?

Posted by: chna | August 25, 2013 at 12:28 PM

I have to agree wth this post. We have know way of knowing what their reasons are behind any of these plays. It could have been to evaluate the oline, or to evaluate how D would respond, or 100 other things.

I'm certain Sherman does not need a blogger with no experience to tell him that spreading out the receivers creates more open space for the defense to cover.

If you want to know who you are blogging with, just look at those jackoffs posting away on the live twitter feed during the game.

Do you really think any of them are someone other than who posts here regularly??? Did a bluebird whistle in their ears to inform them of the new blog format and they came here out of the blue? If this blog required fb or twitter sign on, thosee are the jackoffs you'd see.

We've been talking about the OL since Ireland arrived to this team, and during all these years despite of 1st and 2nd draft picks in this direction he simply cannot fix the problem. The guy is so incompetent. He picked Jordan, a bust-to-be. He got rid of Fasano, Long, etc. How can we build a team if the stupid GM let go the good players all the time, and bring mediocre ones.
Ireland is a virus to this organization, and Ross a weak, a very weak mind.

Saturdays's QB Ratings
Henne 94.9
Cutler 93.8
Luck 92.8
Tanne 90.1
White 72.6
R. wilson 47.4

Jags OL gave up 7 sacks.
Phuc that.
Gabbert needs to take that beating.

Ross is blind. The enemy is at home. As soon as he gets rid of Ireland the team will improve. It's like eating the same garbage all the time and getting sick, and yet you keep eating it.
It's strange how human mind works, stupidity seems to be part of the genes of that pair. We talk about the top heads of the team. No surprise that this team is sick every season.

Jet's have just made a trade for Henne. He could hurt us.

I'm concerned that we're not scoring more points against a crap team like TB.

We really n.eed 1 win out of first 5 for a chance at 9-7. 10-6 is the ceiling. 9-7 can win this division. If by a miracle we win 3/ first 5, we will be EXTREMELY lucky and in great shape. We Have to beat Cleveland! HAVE TO!

Posted by: AJ | August 25, 2013 at 01:23 PM

No they didn't.

Posted by: Liar | August 25, 2013 at 01:29 PM

Liar, liar, pants on fire. Fool is you under name 22...hehehe.

Every blogger is a troll here.

With the sudden double disaster to both the Jets and Bills 1 and 2 QB's, I'd expect our predicted win total to go up to 8.5. I will wait for the super computer confirmation before changing my name.

If we don't sweep those sorry teams, we haven't made progress.

After further review, the 7.5 prediction will stand. Things such as injuries, climate, penalties, suspensions are all factored in. Billions of rows of data are processed. The predictions are made in May and stay put.
