Dolphins making moves in advance of roster cuts

The Dolphins, and all other NFL teams, have until 4 p.m. on Tuesday to trim their roster to 75 players. This team isn't waiting.

Already this morning multiple back-of-the-roster players have been cut.

Two such players -- offensive lineman Jeff Braun and defensive tackle Chris Burnette -- already announced they've been cut on their twitter accounts.

[UPDATE: The Dolphins announced G Jeff Braun, G Chandler Burden, DT Chris Burnette, LB Alonzo Highsmith, and WR Kenny Stafford have been cut. More coming, folks.]

This was expected. Last year, for example, the Dolphins released nine players two days prior to the first NFL cutdown date. This is how they do business.

The Dolphins will have interesting decisions this year because the team has plenty of good players. Unfortunately for Miami, it has many more good defensive players than offensive players. So the truth is the Dolphins may keep some offensive players that are necessary to fill spots while cutting a couple of better defensive players who have earned a spot but got caught in a numbers game.

Having said all that, allow me to project your 2013 Miami Dolphins 53-man roster. This is simply a projection. It is based on opinion. Mine.

Quarterbacks (2): Ryan Tannehill, Matt Moore.

Analysis: And now you're freaking because Pat Devlin is not on the team. Well, I'm sorry, but he's not on my projection. He's done nothing wrong. He's had a solid preseason. But I think some of the sheen is coming off because he's had trouble staying healthy this preseason, his improvement is hardly eye-popping and if the Dolphins are down to their third starting QB this year, I simply don't see that person being Pat Devlin. They would bring in a veteran.

Running backs (4): Lamar Miller, Daniel Thomas, Mike Gillislee, KR Marcus Thigpen.

Analysis: Well, offensive coordinator Mike Sherman said this week the team is searching for a third running back. He didn't say a third and a fourth. But as Thigpen, who is working as a third-down back recently, is also the KR you can add him to this group. The third spot is up for grabs between Gillislee and Jonas Gray. The better player the next two weeks probably takes the spot. The loser? Dolphins will try to stash him on practice squad.

Fullback (1): Jorvorskie Lane.

Analysis: The club has sent Lane multiple messages this year. They flirted with Vonta Leach. They actually demoted Lane once in training camp. And they have given Evan Rodriguez plenty of opportunity to win the spot. Rodriguez is probably a better special teams player. Lane is a better blocker. Both need to be better pass-catchers. It's a toss-up but I'm going with the better blocker to help the running game.

Receivers (5): Mike Wallace, Brian Hartline, Brandon Gibson, Rishard Matthews, Chad Bumphis

Analysis: Marvin McNutt might still bump Bumphis. Saturday night truly matters for these guys. But I simply don't trust his inconsistent hands. I do trust Bumphis more. He cannot let up, however.

Tight ends (4): Charles Clay, Dion Sims, Michael Egnew and Kyle Miller.

Analysis: Offensive coordinator Mike Sherman loves tight ends. At one point in 2012, there were five tight ends on the Miami roster. Miller is a bubble guy and has to perform well Saturday to have a prayer, but if he's not on, I see the Dolphins searching the waiver wires or trying to make a trade to add a guy.

Offensive line (10): Jonathan Martin, John Jerry, Mike Pouncey, Richie Incognito, Tyson Clabo, Nate Garner, Will Yeatman, Joshn Samuda, Lance Louis, Dallas Thomas.

Analysis: The fact John Jerry had the knee injury will help Lance Louis because it is clear he's getting better as he himself recovers from knee surgery. Louis is going to be better in October and better still in December. And he's already better than Josh Samuda at the position. You keep him. The backup tackle situation is worrisome.

Defensive line (10): Cameron Wake, Olivier Vernon, Randy Starks, Paul Soliai, Jared Odrick, Derrick Shelby, Vaughn Martin, Dion Jordan, Tristan Okpalaugo, Kheeston Randall.

Analysis: Ten defensive linemen is too many, but the fact is Dion Jordan's shoulder injury makes for much uncertainty and that's why Okpalaugo is here. Antwan Applewhite might also be an option but he's a more expensive option because if you keep him, his salary is guaranteed. Maybe Miami cuts him and re-signs after the first week. Hate to cut A.J. Francis, but he's probably one of those good defensive players caught in bad numbers I talked about earlier.

Linebackers (6): Dannell Ellerbe, Koa Misi, Phillip Wheeler, Jason Trusnik, Austin Spitler, Jonathan Freeny.

Analysis: And you're freaking again because Jelani Jenkins isn't on the team. He might be, but the truth is I haven't seen him do much of anything. He has three tackles this preseason. I'd love to find a way to get Josh Kaddu on the team as well. Trusnik is on solely because he's a good special teams guy. Kaddu is better on defense, in my humble opinion.

Defensive backs (8): Brent Grimes, Will Davis, Dimitri Patterson, Nolan Carroll, Jimmy Wilson, Reshad Jones, Chris Clemons, Jamar Taylor.

Analysis:  Wilson can back up at safety and help in the nickel. I'd like to have another safety, however. I believe Kelcie McCray is pushing for a spot as well. Hate to lose R.J. Stanford.

Specialists (3): Punter Brandon Fields, K Caleb Sturgis, LS John Denney.

Analysis: Speaks for itself.

Patterson aint getting cut.....no reason to, with Marshall gone--he's a solid/average vet who theyll probably let walk when his contract ends, after the season--agree with a few others about Caroll, not a fan but its fine if he's our 5th or 6th CB....thats basically the level of every teams lower tier CBs (he's experienced at least)--Dallas Thomas isnt terrible, he's just an overmatched rookie at the moment who will eventually play guard--and I agree with a few others above.....consider trading from our deep DLine for a TE or Tackle--one or both of Starks or Soliai are likely gone at year end anyway--trade them for a decent player now.

Not impressed with Gilislee at all. I'm actually laughing at the people that said this guy would win the starting job on the team. Jonas Gray is a better player to me, hands down.

I'll also be shocked if Bumphis doesn't make the team as the 4th WR.

Bumphis doesn't need to be like Welker and Bess in the return game, all he needs to do is continue to catch passes and create separation and he'll make the team. He's essentially a bigger, slightly faster version of Bess.

I don't think you can trade players on a franchise tag? Can you or not? Anyone know for certain?

Well, the team taking Starks would probably want to sign him to a long term deal anyway so taht discussion may be for not anyway.

People seem to forget that Jamar Taylor will be returning for the reg season... He will be a beast this year.

Craig.....hard to get too impressed with just about anybody when most of these guys get limited opportunities, in sloppy play against other teams 2nd & 3rd teamers--Gray has looked good, agree, and he might be the better player, but Gillislee is another guy who is raw and just needs some polishing--not bad get in the 5th rd (I know Gray was undrafted) but the biggest issue for me is Grays ACL injury......plenty of guys recover just fine, but plenty dont--major issue, in my opinion.....cant see going with a guy who's had major knee surgery already, over another talented/young guy who hasnt

I still say that Pat Devlin is our best qb. Pat Devlin is responsible for 80% of our scoring this season and last season. Jeff Fuller is our best secondary deep threat. We had better figure out a way to keep AJ Francis. He could fill in for Soliai, odrick or Starks immediately if one of them get hurt.

Not impressed with Gilislee at all. I'm actually laughing at the people that said this guy would win the starting job on the team. Jonas Gray is a better player to me, hands down.

I'll also be shocked if Bumphis doesn't make the team as the 4th WR.

You laughing at people? Payback for every minute it's done to you?

Go back to Scotland you beatnick LMAO!

agree B33, that should not qualify as a major injury or be a big issue for Taylor by the time the season starts, or soon after--dont know why so many are making a big issue of it.

Carroll will prolly start til Taylor can get enough reps. Davis and Wilson in the nickel/dime. just my opinion.
I don't see the point in Richard Marshall being cut and keeping Patterson.

I have read several places and now here that Devlin will be cut. He's done everything asked of him and has looked much better than Matt Moore has. Only thing I can think of to let him go is he has some kind of chronic injury.

In the first 2 games I seem to recall hearing Gillislee's name a lot and Jonas-Gray also. Mysteriously the name that I've heard the least of is Miller.

In the TEs I recall hearing Egnew a lot but I don't think I've heard Clay's name called at all.

I'm not putting down any our players I'm just sayin...

b33, taylor will eb a beast this year but when will he catch up and actually start to excel? Wekk 5, 6, 7? And what are they supposed to do in the interim? Put out stiffs and not ready for prime time guys against some of the best passing teams in the NFL? Not happening bud. Get used to the good young Greek lad Dimitri out there...

Tampa is a middle of the road team, not a playoff team like Houston and not the worst team like Jville.

If we are at the next level (entry level postseason) then we should have our way with the Tampa's of the world.

My post wasn't directed at you. It's the numbskulls who spend 10 seconds thinking about something and think trading for a guy like Felix Jones is the answer. Its not.

You're an idiot, so I'm not really sure why I'm even responding to you.....but if you actually take the time to READ the comments you'll see there are guys who are suggesting this, it's a dumb move, I'll remind you in week 8 when Jones is missing his third game in a row.

@bond, david bond

That's a joke right? Devlin's also responsible for most of camp's interceptions, plays against third stringers and has a limp noodle for an arm. Tannehill is the future, don't get that twisted. Devlin is a decent third quarterback option. If he develops a bit more, he could even be a good back-up. Fuller is no where near our best deep threat or even really a good receiver. He hasn't been the same since he got hurt in college and, just like McNutt, can't catch the football to save his life. Vontae, Sean Smith and both Marshall's couldn't hold onto the ball and none of them are still with the team. And that's not even taking into consideration the scrubs we signed last year to play the third receiver spot like Armstrong and Naanee who couldn't catch the ball. What do you think that means for Fuller and McNutt?

If two guys are even performance wise, the position will be given to the one of them that plays the best in ST. I think it is possible that Egnew will be cut, maybe traded.

Try buying a name and a sense of humour before you respond to me next time. You're lacking I both areas? Beatnick? Do you even know what the word means? Try getting out of your Moms basement and enjoying life some time. It would be good for you.

I think Devlin goes because they're just not keeping 3 QBs, period.....if he's been great/dynamic then theyd probably re-think that, but he just hasnt (c'mon, if we're really at the point in a game when Devlin has to come in, we're shot already)--Fins kept Patterson over Marshall probably because of the same injury issue that applies to Gray....if Patterson and Marshall are even (I think Patterson is a little better anyway), then you keep the guy who didnt miss most of last season because of back injury (this is not complicated)--for RB, the reality is that Gillislee or Gray will get few carries unless there is an injury......keep Gillislee.

Craig Mouth,

Show me ONE post whre someone advocated in this blog trading for Felix Jones.

Steelers lose their RB, they trade for Felix Jones three days later. Why can't we do things like that?

Posted by: scourt | August 23, 2013 at 12:50 PM

Scourt, I am 99.99% positive was not advocating trading for feleix jones. He wasusing it as an example of a team with a need addressing that need.

So Craig, I'll wait for the post from bloggrs, multiple according to you, who advocate we trade for Felix Jones.

Learn how to read you moron! You're arrogance & ignorance are nauseating!

What makes you think he isn't ready to get in there and play? He has been in the meeting and practicing already and he's close to 100% from hernia surgery not a big deal. But I agree Patterson does add value but I'd look for them to try and move him by trade or dump him cuz of salary becuz of the depth.

Nobody said anything about trading for Felix Jones, it was a reference to the fact teams are wheeling-n-dealing guys before final cuts.

Fact is Felix Jones 1st Yr. in the NFL as the change of pace speed TB who could catch to Marion Barber 111 in Dallas worked great, guy was a homerun threat up and down the field! Same role in Arkansas as 2nd fiddle to McFadden just not very durable. If used out of the backfield on delayed draws used to catch D sleeping or as swing back it could work given skills.

The problem with Jones is he simply disappeared after that MONSTER rookie campaign! One of those happy to have made it and collect for a few before leaving or what strikes me alot have gone the route in NFL history and a big reason they like interviewing so much during draft process. Not just to investigate but to gauge Football knowledge. If you don't LOVE IT you don't really study it ect.....

They are being cautious w Jordan. Taylor is just getting back into things. He played a lil in houston I expect a lot more these next two preseason games gradually.

I don't trust Daniel Thomas staying healthy throughout the season. He's never been able to and he's just one more concussion away from early retirement. If possible, keep Jonas Gray in the mix.

and in whats quickly become a passing league, you keep the best cover LB of those fringe guys.....coverage was supposed to be Jenkins' strength, he's definitely athletic/quick (but undersized).....would seem like he'd be a good option to cover Gronk or any of other beast TEs in the league--every time I saw Trusnick or Spitler last year, it seemed like they were 3 yards behind the TE that just caught the ball, that they were covering.

SergeHimself | August 23, 2013 at 02:10 PM

It's obvious Craig cannot read or has gone completely mental. I just went through 2 pages of posts in this thread & didn't see 1 person wanting a trade for Felix Jones.

His usual counterpart Mark, eve told him no one said that yet, he continues to rant and rave about Felix Jones.

His usual PMS'sing, panty twisted tirade against something no one has even said.

Gotta love Craig "Can't read worth a lick" M.

Patterson isn't going anywhere. We were always going to keep only one out of Patterson and Marshall this year due to signing Optimus Grimes and due to both of their high salaries. If people kept up with preseason work and camps, they would know that Marshall has not played well at all and Patterson has excelled. Therefore, we cut Marshall. Patterson starts opposite Grimes while the rookies get used to the game at this level.

Come on Mouth!

Copy & Paste 1 of the posts you "supposedly read".

You don't have to show me the "guys" who want to trade for Felix Jones....I'll settle for 1 guy!

You love shoving your foot in your mouth constantly!

Go ahead, call me YG now that I have you beat! That's your usual schtick & he aint' even here anymore!

I'll buy a name when you get some glasses & a reading comprehension 101 book!

That's ok Craig, i was joking about putting down the Scotch, drink it up!!

Fuller, McNutt, Bumphis.....even Matthews.....we're talking about 4th-6th WRs here (mostly 5th & 6th if we assume Matthews is the 4)--again, if we're in a position where we're relying that much on a 5th or 6th WR (injuries), then it wont really matter--we'll make it or not with our top 3, and the focus will probably be on 1&2.....not sure why so much discussion over near practice squad level WRs.

Guy says 'why can't we make moves likes this'?......I say.....'because its dumb'.....that's why.

Go use a few more names to make your point. I'll go back and hang with the 'beatniks'......you fukking dimwit!

Nobody said anything about trading for Felix Jones, it was a reference to the fact teams are wheeling-n-dealing guys before final cuts.

Posted by: fin4life | August 23, 2013 at 02:17 PM

Amazing how you, I & truth is & Mark all told him no one is saying that yet continues to try to LIE & convince people otherwise.

It's obvious, Craig sees things no one else does.

Maybe in some walk of live that trait is worthwhile. On a blog, it just makes him look like a beatnick dumbkoff, know it all jackweed!

i actually like tyns over bumphis or mcnutt.

B33, no way, no how does patterson get cut. he will be out there evey play and can play inside or out and has great ball skills. he's way better than carol and the rookies are very green still.

b33, because he hasn't been in there in any significant preseason action. Besides QB, CB is the one positionwhere going with a rookie causes the most pain.

Davis? He got beat long by Billie jean in the last game. Not going to trust him against Julio Jones yet.

The truth is......you couldn't possibly be HAHAHaHaHa.....

Nah.....no one here thinking that. The reality is those aren't the only two names you're posting under, not a person here who doesn't know that.

Good luck with your continuous full time job moron.....

Craig is still at it in denial. The man has no shame! Cannot admit when he's wrong!

had nothing to do with the player they acquired.

God you are 1 patheticly stupid individual!

Plus, WHERE ARE THE MANY GUYS wanting Jones?

You have thus far posted NONE.

Yet, you continue to act as if you're not wrong.

You are a disgusting worthless human being.

Hey, I'm everybody's copunterpart - except for YG.

We're all Dolphins fans here ...

Having read plenty of CraigM's posts now and in the past, I can tell you one thing, the M in CraigM stands for Moron.
On a different note, having watched Devlin this preseason and last, he just keeps making bone headed mistakes at critical times, like the interception in the end zone that cost us a preseason win last year. So if they cut him, I can see why.

'Why can't we make moves like that'.......seems pretty simple to me.

Why can't we make moves like that? Because this is the type of crap that's plagued this franchise for years. These ate exactly the kind of moves this team shouldn't be making.

But great point though, scourt.

Stick to one name and you won't get confused by your posts. Until then you'll continue to have zero credibility.

Craig, drop it already. You're spinning it every which way to not appear as dumb.

Now you're only addressing the trade aspect when earlier it was about Felix Jones.

you said multiple guys said they wanted Jones. When asked to copy & paste where anyone said it, you declined & are now focusing on just trading.

You look small & stupid. Usually people quit whe tey're ahead. In your case, you should quit while you way behind.

Try reading what people type next time, not what you think you read.

Buy a life man......you're not worth my energy.

i actually like tyns over bumphis or mcnutt.

Why? What has he done in preseason? Their college stats are great next to his.

The two Players that Philbin said he liked, Devlin and Kaddu, might be cut. Hmm...

Right on schedule Craig Mouth accuses me of being Truth is.

Yet, fin 4 life agrees no one said what Craig read.
Mark does too.
Truth is does too
Mass Dolphan does too

Yet, we're all 1 in the same guy.

Keep living in that bubble you idiot! You shouldn't be so vain, you're not well received here. Sad but, true. No matter how much you deny it.

Some things never change.

I agree with the post @2:31.

Instead of addressing the fact that Craig can't read & has demonstrated it clearly in the blog again today, it always becomes about who is using whose name.

So, am I YG now? Tell me who I am..

Truth is? YG, MassDolphan? WHO MR> KNOW IT ALL?

HAHAHAHAHAHHAHA, my guess is that your YG

It was a for-gone conclusion the team would terminate either Marshall or Patterson the minute they invested 2 top-100 picks on DB's. The only real question was which one, that was debated adnauseum after the draft. I thought given Patterson's history playing zone coverage for the Eagles gave him a better grasp on what Coyle wanted but Marshall showed some promise before the back injury sidelined him. It was a toss up and Dmitri won, as far as J.Taylor's injury, it was a Sports Hernia or the same one that Milliner is recovering from. By the way after the trade up were we took Jordan in surprise pick was I the only one who thought if D why not Milliner who can press cover with ideal size for the bigger WR's running a legit 4.37/40

I'd like to get rid of Egnew and D Thomas. We dont need them.

is Patterson 4 mil better than Carroll?...nope
Carroll 26yrs old Patterson 30yrs
I don't see them keeping him while Stanford and McCray have been impressive as well.
Jamar Taylor and Will Davis will play this year a lot

stanford have been horrible

I know Jordan had a shoulder injury, but I think Millner had a huge list of injuries that could be reoccurring for his entire career. Dont you think a 15 sack a year(if he pans out) is more important to the defense than a good corner. I dont think there is any wrong answer to that, just a matter of preference

Bring back Nick Saban

HAHAHAHAHAHHAHA, my guess is that your YG

Posted by: Craig Moron | August 23, 2013 at 02:45 PM

Try again Beatnick! WRONG AS PER THE USUAL!

MassDolphan | August 23, 2013 at 02:31 PM

Everybody is on the look out for the next Kurt Warner but Kurt could throw every pass ripping the cover off or with touch. This is what you want to see out of a project QB regardless of Pre-Season #'s. IMO Devlin can't make every NFL throw and actually puts to much air under everything for my liking some here keep calling it touch but I don't see it that way at all!

Personally, never liked Milliner. Alwyas discussed Taylor and Davis as good cb prospects, not Milliner.

Wasn't surprised at all when he wasn't the pick.

Patterson is the #2 corner & in the nickel package the #3.

He's signed for this year & he's a goner next year. It's good to have experience back there while Taylor & davis learn. Carrol will always be the weak link in the back end.

The hope I think is that Davis & Taylor are ready to start next year while not resigning Grimes & Patterson. Ireland said he waned to get cheaper at CB. He did that by drafting to 2 hopefully starting future DB's.

Grimes may come back but, it'll have to be cheap. I am not opposed to inking him to a 3 year deal before the season ends to have a stable of 3 good CB's.

If not, you will see more CB's drafted next year in the hopes 1 has the skills to be the nickel CB behind Taylor & Davis.
