Dolphins making moves in advance of roster cuts

The Dolphins, and all other NFL teams, have until 4 p.m. on Tuesday to trim their roster to 75 players. This team isn't waiting.

Already this morning multiple back-of-the-roster players have been cut.

Two such players -- offensive lineman Jeff Braun and defensive tackle Chris Burnette -- already announced they've been cut on their twitter accounts.

[UPDATE: The Dolphins announced G Jeff Braun, G Chandler Burden, DT Chris Burnette, LB Alonzo Highsmith, and WR Kenny Stafford have been cut. More coming, folks.]

This was expected. Last year, for example, the Dolphins released nine players two days prior to the first NFL cutdown date. This is how they do business.

The Dolphins will have interesting decisions this year because the team has plenty of good players. Unfortunately for Miami, it has many more good defensive players than offensive players. So the truth is the Dolphins may keep some offensive players that are necessary to fill spots while cutting a couple of better defensive players who have earned a spot but got caught in a numbers game.

Having said all that, allow me to project your 2013 Miami Dolphins 53-man roster. This is simply a projection. It is based on opinion. Mine.

Quarterbacks (2): Ryan Tannehill, Matt Moore.

Analysis: And now you're freaking because Pat Devlin is not on the team. Well, I'm sorry, but he's not on my projection. He's done nothing wrong. He's had a solid preseason. But I think some of the sheen is coming off because he's had trouble staying healthy this preseason, his improvement is hardly eye-popping and if the Dolphins are down to their third starting QB this year, I simply don't see that person being Pat Devlin. They would bring in a veteran.

Running backs (4): Lamar Miller, Daniel Thomas, Mike Gillislee, KR Marcus Thigpen.

Analysis: Well, offensive coordinator Mike Sherman said this week the team is searching for a third running back. He didn't say a third and a fourth. But as Thigpen, who is working as a third-down back recently, is also the KR you can add him to this group. The third spot is up for grabs between Gillislee and Jonas Gray. The better player the next two weeks probably takes the spot. The loser? Dolphins will try to stash him on practice squad.

Fullback (1): Jorvorskie Lane.

Analysis: The club has sent Lane multiple messages this year. They flirted with Vonta Leach. They actually demoted Lane once in training camp. And they have given Evan Rodriguez plenty of opportunity to win the spot. Rodriguez is probably a better special teams player. Lane is a better blocker. Both need to be better pass-catchers. It's a toss-up but I'm going with the better blocker to help the running game.

Receivers (5): Mike Wallace, Brian Hartline, Brandon Gibson, Rishard Matthews, Chad Bumphis

Analysis: Marvin McNutt might still bump Bumphis. Saturday night truly matters for these guys. But I simply don't trust his inconsistent hands. I do trust Bumphis more. He cannot let up, however.

Tight ends (4): Charles Clay, Dion Sims, Michael Egnew and Kyle Miller.

Analysis: Offensive coordinator Mike Sherman loves tight ends. At one point in 2012, there were five tight ends on the Miami roster. Miller is a bubble guy and has to perform well Saturday to have a prayer, but if he's not on, I see the Dolphins searching the waiver wires or trying to make a trade to add a guy.

Offensive line (10): Jonathan Martin, John Jerry, Mike Pouncey, Richie Incognito, Tyson Clabo, Nate Garner, Will Yeatman, Joshn Samuda, Lance Louis, Dallas Thomas.

Analysis: The fact John Jerry had the knee injury will help Lance Louis because it is clear he's getting better as he himself recovers from knee surgery. Louis is going to be better in October and better still in December. And he's already better than Josh Samuda at the position. You keep him. The backup tackle situation is worrisome.

Defensive line (10): Cameron Wake, Olivier Vernon, Randy Starks, Paul Soliai, Jared Odrick, Derrick Shelby, Vaughn Martin, Dion Jordan, Tristan Okpalaugo, Kheeston Randall.

Analysis: Ten defensive linemen is too many, but the fact is Dion Jordan's shoulder injury makes for much uncertainty and that's why Okpalaugo is here. Antwan Applewhite might also be an option but he's a more expensive option because if you keep him, his salary is guaranteed. Maybe Miami cuts him and re-signs after the first week. Hate to cut A.J. Francis, but he's probably one of those good defensive players caught in bad numbers I talked about earlier.

Linebackers (6): Dannell Ellerbe, Koa Misi, Phillip Wheeler, Jason Trusnik, Austin Spitler, Jonathan Freeny.

Analysis: And you're freaking again because Jelani Jenkins isn't on the team. He might be, but the truth is I haven't seen him do much of anything. He has three tackles this preseason. I'd love to find a way to get Josh Kaddu on the team as well. Trusnik is on solely because he's a good special teams guy. Kaddu is better on defense, in my humble opinion.

Defensive backs (8): Brent Grimes, Will Davis, Dimitri Patterson, Nolan Carroll, Jimmy Wilson, Reshad Jones, Chris Clemons, Jamar Taylor.

Analysis:  Wilson can back up at safety and help in the nickel. I'd like to have another safety, however. I believe Kelcie McCray is pushing for a spot as well. Hate to lose R.J. Stanford.

Specialists (3): Punter Brandon Fields, K Caleb Sturgis, LS John Denney.

Analysis: Speaks for itself.

Does Brady Quinn sukkk or what. Seattle has no adequate backup to Russell.

Final stats.

8 rushes for -5 yards.

Lex Hilliard > Lacy

oscar whose Jermaine??

Finley, Finley, the TE from GB that preferred to go there.

Good question! Every blog in Miami was lit up with Kaep talk and I was on the bandwagon!! Truth is though everybody had Kaep pegged late 2nd to early 3rd with others even talking RD-4. So give Harbaugh his credit he moved up and took Kaep in CBA draft at the top of RD-2 we of course traded back in at the bottom of RD-2 for another Wild Cat trigger man in former H.S. QB turned College RB D.Thomas!!!

The name is JerMicheal not Jermaine and he was franchised then signed to 2 Yr. extension at 15 Mil. We couldn't sign him if we had wanted this is the final Yr. of his deal he hits the market in 2014.

There goes Christine Micheal again for big yards!!

Does anyone remember we beat Seattle last year? Philbin said the read option could be handled. We were on SF too until our middle linebacker lost contain.

If Tanne can play a little and help score a few points, Philbin, Coyle and our defense will get us in the playoffs.

If Tanne can play well, this is a serious team.

JerMicheal, come back, why did you abandon us?

Seattle has some players at the bottom of their depth chart with RB Micheal and WR Williams whose just the BIG target we were looking for, SHEEEEEEESH!!

Dolphins also skipped over Rothlessburger

I don't doubt it for a minute!! The question in Miami starts ans ends at QB!! I was just making a point about the players Pete Carroll has found for the Hawks cause their back up skill guys look leaps-n-bounds better than the scrubs were discussing keeping at the 4th and 5th WR spots.

Tannehill is pure garbage. Worse than Henne.

In the 04 draft we took Carey with pick 19 that was the Hurricane draft with 6 in RD-1! We passed on Wilfork for Carey which was pretty unforgivable as well!! He was a RG his whole Canes career outside his Sr. Yr. were he played RT and Wannstedt drafted him thinking he had a LT, just pathetic!!

Tannihill MUST improve his accuracy.

Reviewing the Texans game...
He puts the ball in the wrong location far too often.

Your probably thinking Drew Brees who we passed for Nickle Back Jamar Fletcher out of Wisconsin! The Stache was an ARSSSS!

I think our 4th and 5th WR will look better this week. We will hopefully try to give our backup QB some time to connect with them.

I know Philbin was trying to evaluate players last week, but that was not a cool way to treat Moore. That is why those 2 Ol guys were the first cuts.

fin4life (@ 11:09PM)

Sorry about that....you're right. For some reason I thought they had a shot at Rothlessberger that year.

Wanny was the last decent HC we've had. All crap after him.

but that was not a cool way to treat Moore. That is why those 2 Ol guys were the first cuts.

Your right, he nearly got his 3 Mil. QB KILLED!! I found it odd Corp wasn't taking those snaps cause were one good hit away from Moore being the guy. I found Tannehill a little soft last Yr. with some of his injuries, especially in N.Y.

Wanny put his stock in Jay Feely.

for that he can NEVER be forgiven.

Duhe your kidding right? It's his tenure that started this teams very steep fall without mentioning the 3 drafts he oversaw which brought the likes of Eddie Moore, Jamar Fletcher as our top picks ect.... It's leaving the former Bears Coach in charge that slipped UM ICON JJ down my RESPECT-O-METER

He finally gets to start after 5 years on the bench and Tony Soprano is one of his coaches.

Nobody phucs up a young QBs career like Tony Soprano.

Innacurate Quarterbacks LOVE big targets.

Not kidding. Wanny was a good coach.

Dennis Allen hired Sparano in Oakland??? He might as well sign his death warrant!

Want couldn't even coach at the college level! How was he a good coach in the NFL?

We could've/should've had Matt Flynn but Ross was too cheap.

I meant Wanny. Damn autocorrect!

3/6 19yds 2int

Haha ha ha ha

Sparano might be able to get a gig as a lineman coach in High school after this season, if he is lucky.

You remember so many CATASTROPHIC blunders under Wannstache that you added one during his tenure in Miami, LOL!

Yeah Brady Quinn loves that Williams WR given that was a pick that kid scooped away from the DB on that long TD pass. By the way you got to really like the prototype Carroll is putting together in Seattle, I'm really impressed!

Gawd I wish we would have drafted Wilson. I told everyone that and everyone said he was to small.... Tanne scares me... I think he will be another henne... Hope I'm wrong

Sparano has a much better record than Philbin. Philbin is not a good HC.

Philbin isnt too bright. R Wilson was playing right in front of him in Wisconsin. On a positive note I do like our kicking and punting games.

You really wonder if anybody from the F.O. to the towel boys will survive in Oak. after this Yr. They dumped alot of big salaries off their CAP while eating a ton of DEAD MONEY this Yr. I think Mark Davis (Big Al's kid) gets that the old man went nuts at the end throwing away CAP space on INSANE FA signings and will EAT IT all this Yr. moving forward to 2014. Flynn is smoke-n-mirrors keeping butts in seats!

Aside from the fact Terrell Pryor should be the QB in Oak. that was some opening 2nd half drive!

Wilson will be a has been when Tanne is a very good QB.

Yes, I said it, and under my regular name so you can find me if I am wrong.

Wilson is running on guts and drive. That will take you so far. After that you need some tangibles. Tanne has them, wilson doesn't.

I think there are more qb's out there with the tangibles you speak of...

Seems as though it's the intangibles that make the difference.

My compliments Armando. I would do a few things slightly different. But that's what makes the world go Round!

It's been just a very few players released so far, so nothing to really be concerned with. Nothing surprising.

Having said that, my first thoughts are on Alonzo Highsmith. Apparently he hasn't done anything to distinguish himself. He does however have the NFL Pedigree **AND** managed to stand on his own two feet throughout his somewhat unspectacular collegiate career.

Personally, I think we should try and stash him on the Practice Squad. He had tons of information, tips and Coaching through his Daddy. He was learning lots of this stuff from a very early age and just might be a late bloomer. I think he's worth taking a "Practice Squad Chance" regardless.

Well, knock me over with a feather! I just read Mando's column piece for Saturday, and he actually had PRAISE for the Dolphins! Talking about the improvement in the Offence! From the Tight Ends! And, Wallace & Tannehill!

I'm starting to worry that it's the end of times as we know it...

I have to take exception with Armando on Pat Devlin.

You seem to be putting a lot of emphasis on Devlin being injured and that's hardly the point at this stage of the game.

If you're trying to make room for another player or trying to justify parting ways over something like skills or a lack of, that's something else altogether.

But to simply point to a minor scrape...........?

I just can't buy into that, sorry. This is a youngster at the most important position there is and we have some time, effort and resources invested.

You'd have to do better than that in my own personal opinion.

OK Tracy,

We'll knock you over twice.

Armando this team better trade for a tight end or its going to be the same offense from last year. Because even thought we have a deep threat now. We had a tight end last year. Now we have nothing.

The seasons over for all practical purposes without Keller.

stink bomb, I dont watch the fish they are to sorry for words. Ireland, who, i was begging to warm up to has had all off season to ad a couple of GOOD OL-men and has failed miserably. Sorry OL? Sorry team. Take it to the bank. 6-10 season.

Si se la meten grita si se la sacan llora. Suppose Ireland had drafted an Olinemen, the outcry would have been tremendous. He drafted Dion and now the outcry is the same. ???

Gameday...Looking forward to seeing if we can have another good game this week. Last week went mostly when unnoticed due to the Keller injury.

Ohhh....in my espn magazine Pro Football focus has the Phins in first place. That was a bit shocking. Not sure that's going to happen but with this defense anything is possible.

jordan pick could haunt us for years

the ONLY blown pick that haunts you for years is a BLOWN top 10 QB pick....and with the new CBA...that doesn't even sting as much....

Jordan pick is fine....

and if Tanne is above average....then the FINS are fine....

Why are you complaining so early on such a beautiful Saturday....

havent blown the qb pick. jury easily still out, hes played one year. be real. jordan will haunt us for a long time when we watch eifert tearing it up and b albert playing solid lt for 5 years

This coaching staff is seriously devious. And they keep secrets.

Last season, several players made it through training camp w/o having their name mentioned but they made the practice squad. Kaddu, Samuda are a couple.

This year I would expect the same. They tried to ignore Francis, but that did not work. He just played too well.

Hinds is a player who plays quick and hard to me. No mention of him in camp. They are hoping he makes it to the practice squad. Trying to evaluate a raw young player and still keep him off everyones radar is hard.

you must still be asleep....

I didn't say the blew the QB pick....and besides...i know NOTHING is definitive on this BLOG until DUSTY says so....with a patented ONE SENTENCE...."blah..blah..blah....awful...or horrible" reference....

You cry for what could have been....I will live with what is....

Jordan is the PICK...deal with it....

if we had picked somebody else...you would be crying about us NOT having Jordan....

If you thought our defense was good last week. Think about this...it's going to get better with Randy Starks on the field tonight. Can't wait to see at least a half of football with our starters chasing Freeman.

sure kris. since jordan wasnt even on any fin fans radar. the trade up was another awful move by ireland. sorry u cant accept it. we shall revisit the deal down the road when u see for yourself. fair enough

Like I said....

Its not a BAD MOVE until Dusty declares it so....

so it is written...so it shall be....

I think Jordan is our best shot to get a Clowney. Unless of course we decide to "suck for Clowney". Or how is "collapse for Clowney". Don't think that can happen.

Seriously, If Jordan puts on weight he is identical to Clowney, body wise. He seems to have the motor, he was just used differently in college.

Anyway, I think his upside is awesome.

Hate to tell you Dusty...

but IRELAND (not you).....IS THE FINS RADAR.....

Just cause he didn't email you in advance to ask for your consent...doesn't mean he wasn't considering the pick since last NOV....

your method of thinking is"hilarious"....

Any compliments for ETF the ear-grabber this morning?
