Dolphins react to Dustin Keller's knee injury

HOUSTON -- Dolphins coach Joe Philbin, who has a curious habit of not even fielding questions about injuries, had no choice late Saturday but answer questions about the right knee injury to tight end Dustin Keller.

Philbin said it is too early to determine the seriousness of Keller's injury, although sources within the team are fearing the worst. Philbin said he's hopeful the club gets Keller back sooner rather than later.

The mood in the locker room wasn't nearly so upbeat. Players saw the replay. Some heard Keller writhe in pain when he took defensive back D.J. Swearinger's helmet to the side of his knee. They saw Keller have to be helped up to get on a cart and leave the field via that cart.

"Really painful," receiver Brian Hartline said. "Guy worked his tail off. He was going to be a big part of our offense. It hurt. It's a shame. It's part of the game. There's not much you can do. It's part of playing the game. I'd like to see a higher tackle but you can't blame a guy for trying to make a play."

"It's just an unfortunate thing that happened out there," receiver Mike Wallace said. "Big part of our offense, but that's football. Things happen all the time but it's unfortunate. He's a great guy. Great player. I hate to see that happen. It looked pretty bad. I'm pretty sure he'll be out for a while but it's next man up. Play for him, through him. He's going to watch us, I know that. We just have to keep playing."

If Keller is out for a significant time, perhaps even the season, as expected, the Dolphins might turn to rookie Dion Sims. Or they could go with Charles Clay, who is more a hybrid H-back type player but is closer to the seam threat that Keller was. He may have to move to tight end now.

Clay says he's ready.

"It's been something I've worked on a lot, not only last season but this offseason,"Clay said. "It's something that I feel comfortable doing. But it's something I also feel I need to work on as well. If I'm the next guy up, I'm going to go out there and give it everything I have."

Clay says he benefitted from Keller's presence the last few months in that the veteran gave him tips on how to do his job even before the snap of the ball.

"I've been learning the little things that separate the good players from great players," Clay said. "That's the things I've learned from Dustin -- reading coverages, knowing what to expect before the play starts, things like that. I'm still working on it but that's probably where I've made the most growth so far. I've been working really hard on my blocking. I feel like I've come a long way."

Quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who quickly built a good chemistry with Keller, was optimistic other players would fill the role.

"Those guys are going to have to step up and fill the void," Tannehill said. "I think we have guys that can do it. Now, it's just a matter of making it happen."

cause in your MIND...

and KriS

are all different....

LOL indeed....

even though the ONLY difference in my name is a capital K....or sometimes a lower case....

but I know when your off your meds....everything looks "all crazy man"....

Next sign in name please....maybe you can set the record today....

I am really sorry you guys. Its just really hard to have a good attitude about the Dolphins when my life is so bad. I really don't know what Im talking about, I'm just really jealous of Tannehill. I really am pathetic.

I watched the game twice and about to see it again now. I saw some really good things and some bad things.

This is what I saw......

1) First team defense looks pretty solid. Especially the front seven. Odrick and Solai look really good. So does Wake. I am not sure about Vernon. I see why they took Jordan and I hope the kid gets back healthy and can help out. I think he will. The LB's played well. The back up DLINEMAN look really good....happy with depth there. I don't like our backup LB's.

2) Martin, Incognito and Pouncey played great. I really think Clabo was solid...not great...but solid. Samuda is killing this group right now. I had hoped he would replace Jerry easily but he can't do it. I liked Yeatman as backup Tackle. He made few mistakes. I wonder if he could try RG? He seems very athletic. Louis seemed to play pretty well with the 2nd team. I am holding out hope he can start for this team.

3) Thomas looks good and should be given the first RB spot. I am supportive of Miller but he is too inconsistent and seems to go down easily. I think Gray and Gillisleee should both make the team as solid backups and special team contributors.

4) I already said Keller's loss is huge but I actually like what I am seeing from Clay and Egnew. Sims has potential. I would support taking on a VET TE but I am actually confident in what we have to replace Keller. Not ideal but I'm OK with it overall.

5) THILL played well. Not great. But good enough to win. His overall rating was good. He created chemistry with Wallace. Hartline and Miller had two important drops that cost the team progress. My only real problem with THILL was inconsistency handling pressure. He ran well on one play but then took a sack or two that he should't have. But no turnovers is a big point of progress for sure.

6) Secondary was inconsistent.....again. Grimes looks great. Clemmons and Jones were OK but not great. They will be fine overall. Patterson looks good. Marshall was OK but I am not very confident in him. Carroll is not good....never has been. Davis is playing like a rookie and getting picked on. Looks good one week and not so good another. I wonder how Taylor will be? The backup safeties and CB's not mentioned are not worth mentioning. Their play is poor and their time here is limited.

7) Sturgis looked good again. Happy Carpenter is gone. Just wonder how Sturgis will play in the cold and snow late in the year? Off to a good start though.

Kris, lying won't make others forget. It wasn't just K or k. We all saw several variations and your explaination was a faulty mouse and keyboard.

That takes the cade for stupid excuses LOL.

Cheapo Ross wont even pay to fix his OWN STADIUM!!

Harmel....please shut up on Ross. He has been spending like a drunken fool since he got here. He is willing to invest in the new stadium with huge amounts of his own money. If not for corrupt politicians the stadium plan would have been approved.

Ross is not the best owner in the league but he is not cheap.

I have no panic button. It might benefit some you not to get so antsy in the pantsy when the crap hits the fan. All teams face adversity with the loss of players. The season is not over and I haven't changed any predictions for the team.

T-hill’s ball placement is bad on most passes to put it as kindly as I possibly can. Players get hurt so, I won’t put the Keller thing squarely on T-hill but, he definitely contributed and, I’m guessing Keller won’t be the last to suffer unless something changes. I don’t see the ‘QB presence’ in T-hill like I do in a lot of his peers. Could he improve? If I had to bet, I’d bet against. Prayers for Keller. I hated his guts when he played for the Jets and, was thrilled to have him on the Phins. I would also have to agree with the people that didn’t like the Jordan move. I could think of at least 10 better ways to go with that first draft pick.

yeah id go 7 so take the under. i put couple grand on cincy over 8.5. only play so far

How you morons blame Tannehill for the Keller injury mind boggling.

jpao, Ross is the cheapest sports team owner on the planet. Thats just part of the reason the team stinks. He wont pay for a decent HC, GM, QB or even pay for a team president! He wont fix his own decrepid stadium for crying out loud. He was too cheap to get the players his HC wanted, Matt Flynn and Vonte Leach. Ross is a horrible owner from a fans perspective. He will NEVER EVER win!

flyn, loooooooooooooooooooooooool harmel how dumb can u be.

If I knew that I wouldn't get caught I would honestly put about 50 of you morons out of your misery. I'm dead serious.

Matt Flynn? Really? He couldn't beat out a rookie QB in Seattle?

Votae Leach would have been a good pick but I assure you that had nothing to do with Ross.

Ross spent more than 85% of the teams this offseason acquiring talent.

Ross tried signing Manning. He tried luring Harbough. But he is a new owner and they went elsewhere.

He will fix the stadium if not replace it. Watch and see.

Ross is not a perfect owner but again, he is NOT affraid to spend money. Open your eyes and pay attention to the realities around you.

Steve Ross save the Dolphins. SELL THE TEAM!

When Keller went down, my jaw dropped! Blame this one on Ryan Crapenhill and his inaccurate passes. Sorry guys but we still haven't found Marino's replacement and with Ireland picking, we probably never will. I am extremely worried about something now after Keller went down. If Crapenhill goes down, they might as well throw in the towel. Matt Moore is pathetic and who else is left? And with this weak O-line that seems to get bullied by every team so far, if they don't fix it, Crapenhill surely will leave a game on a cart too. The D-line also needs to improve with rushing the passer. Opposing QBs are given way too much time in the pocket to throw, this while Crapenhill is pressure on almost every play. Meaning the battles are being lost on both sides of the lines.

Matt Flynn is way better than Ryan freakin Tannehill. Philbin knows that.

Todays final post.

For all you self proclaimed experts than always know whose assignment was blown, whose fault each mishap is, and where the play was obviously supposed to go, take some advice from a REAL expert.

T-hill is deer-in-the-headlights chad henne. don't buy the hype. watch and what do you see? Keller's injury is a direct result of chad t-hill not being able to throw a five yard out. Irland picks a guy number 3 and what does he bring? NOTHING. By the way we can't block anybody.

yeah irelands draft looks horrible, ill agree there

Well, it is confirmed what most of us knew. Keller out for the Season.

The 70 plus year old shut in is going to "put people out of their misery"....

That is an LOL....

And I have no doubt you would stalk us all...if had the chance....

You Internet stalk now...

I'm sure you would wheelchair stalk if giving the opportunity......

yup keller will never play a down as a dolphin. man what a huge loss, just cant get over it

I agree with guys that have posted here on this years draft picks. Should've stayed at 12 and picked Eifert. I really thought that was the going to be the pick. Then the best right tackle with the first of two seconds they had. This is a young team, odds are we will not make the playoffs again this year, and they need to be thinking win but also build with talent for the near future until they finally get the quaterback they've been looking for since Marino's departure. Moving up to get a thin defensive end/linebacker with a chronic shoulder injury was a big mistake. A lot of fans were surprised with that move, I know I was. During the combine did any of the draft analysts ever mention D. Jordan? I watched the NFL channel and don't remember it.

Ireland must go!!!! Does somethings well but then screws up majorly like in the past. Ross is an idiot!

funny that everyone on twitter is saying Keller out according to someone else then you look at their page and they say it is according to someone else. It's like listening to the pretend fans on here. If the Phins know why don't they just put out a press release? They have to know by now.

dusty you sound like an old lady. come back when you are done sniffiling, wussy.

One of Tannehills peers in 30 years old and the other 2 been playibg QB since they were 5 years old.
And after last nights game Matt Moore is definitely not starting.

It is all this media that want to be the fir$t in reporting it. I think it was PFT or ESPN.

Why is Armando NEVER first on a fins story?

We can consider ourselves lucky in another aspect that Ireland signed him for only 1 year.

I just saw Egnew working on his celebration dance at the beach.

still looking for Dr BOBBY12

Mando is on a plane. According to a source (which is me) I can report the reports are really nothing more than rumor until we hear some official word. It's like finding a needle in a haystack trying to find out what is going on really. I know the tone of T-hill and Philbin have to be considered but it's kind of a joke.

Also according to the source (me again) the Phins are going to surrender the season due to the big/huge/enormous/massive hole in the roster. (sarcasm)

Whatever Everybody knows, it is the Truth.

YG, time and Place.

I will even let you get the first two hits in. If you have a gun. I'll let you take the first shot.

It would be my pleasure to beat you to a Pulp. And then stomp the Chit out of you afterwards.

I don't want to shoot you, just give you the Beating of your life.

You troll Dashi 24/7. Even after I told you take my name out your mouth.

Dashi has never posted about you, unless you start talking trash. And over the last couple weeks I don't even respond to whatever you say about Dashi.

Unlike you, Dashi isn't a Coward or come from a long line of them. Your Daddy is a Coward, if you have kids, They are Cowards to. You can tell by the way you act here how much Cowardice you have.

OK...I looked at every offensive snap again just now. Here are my ten observations on the offense.

1) Tannehill had a good game. Held the ball too long on one play. Overthrew Hartline on one play. Other than that he looked good and led the team to two TD's. All those dumping on him are just frustrated fans who are not watching closely.

2) Matt Moore is horrible. I think Devlin is better.

3) Samuda only had two bad plays with the starting Offense. Both were costly...allowing a sack and busted running play for a loss. But when you REALLY watch him every play, like I just did, you will see that he plays pretty solid. I was wrong on my initial assessment. I think he can be a starter. He will make mistakes but so does Jerry. He also serves as a solid backup Center.

4) Martin, Clabo, Pouncey and Incognito really did have solid games. The starting OLine did a nice job overall.

5) Sims, Clay and Egnew all had penalties during the first team offensive snaps. They caused problems by killing momentum. The early drives that were busted up were usually caused by these penalties.

4) Gibson can really catch the ball. I was a huge Bess fan but I think Gibson will serve well.

5) Wallace is a complete WR and I can't wait to see the numerous plays he will make. Also like that he is not a big mouth like Marshall was. He is the real deal.

6) Yeatman played pretty darn well as a backup T. I think Martin played well and so did Clabo but it's nice to see Yeatman step up as a viable backup...especially with Garner hurt for a few weeks.

7) Allowing Bush to go was the RIGHT MOVE. I saw the combination of Thomas and Miller being effective overall. Both made some good plays for the team last night.

8) Hartline is just OK. He did nothing last night. Not sure paying him the way they did makes a lot of sense. We'll see.

9) McNutt and Mathews should make the team as backup WR's. The rest are mediocre and make little impact come game time.

10) Lance Louis looked pretty solid. I think he, Samuda and Jerry all have a shot at starting LG and will all serve as quality backup G's.

Overall there were a few costly penalties. One sack due to Samuda. One sack due to THILL holding it too long when nobody was open (he should have ran). Other than that the STARTING OFFENSE was pretty solid. They scored 14 points during the first half and would have had more opportunities if the starting defense played the entire first half. They D was pulled midway through the first quarter and the Houston offense was allowed to stay on the field far too long.

I am CONFIDENT at this point.

go finsssssssssssss

Another loss for the Dullfins...YAWN!

now who we gonna pick up for te. nobody on roster worth anything

Funny how the Complainers Chest Puffs Out after a Loss. How they were correct. These fans are smarter than the Coaches.

Clowns. AssClowns.

Real tough guys behind those keyboards.

Switching names when they are wrong, and taking credit for claiming they know who was a good prospect.

Yeah, everyone predicted Keller will get Speared on his knee in a Preseason Game.

You idiots wanting Eifert, Think about this. It would've been Eifert getting carted of the field. The Starting TE got hurt.

If we would've drafted a TE, we wouldn't have signed Keller. And That Player would've been the one catching the pass.

So we would've had our #12 pick out for the year.

But yeah, you guys are geniuses and know more than the coaching staff. Plus, you guys are never wrong. GTFOH!!

You F'ing Hypocrites.

Everybody knows who I am Talking about. If you feel offended by this post. Then I am referring to you and the Coward who is on here 24/7. To the real fans that are objective and come here to talk football you know I am not referring to you, but to the Select Few Degenerates that come here just to B'tch and Complain.

We lost a great seam threat in Keller but let's try to look at the positives. Dion Simms is a great blocker which means that our running game will improve and Simms will also help our weak OL in pass coverage. For as good as Keller was as a receiving TE, he could not block his way out of a paper bag. With Simms blocking Tannehill will have more time to throw the football to Gibson, Wallace, and Hartline. Those three will have to pick up the slack for the loss of Keller (more receptions for them). So there may be a silver lining to the Keller injury.

Tannehill threw the ball behind Keller, forcing him to turn around. It is the QB’s job to keep receivers out of those situations. If Tannehill’s pass had been out in fron tof Keller, where it was supposed to be there would not have been an injury to Keller. Those are the facts that this marketing department disguised as a football team don’t want reported…

Dashi's Depth Chart since the Start of Camp

QB- T-Hill, Devlin, Moore

RB- L.Miller, D.Thomas, J.Gray, Thigpen, Gillislee

TE-Keller, Egnew, Sims

dashi u cant assume the same play would of been called at the same time and the runner would of run the same amount of speed and the pass the same. get real

Ross is like a used car salesman selling us a bunch of hogwash.

tell em like it is jpao. I don't believe Samuda did that well though. He may have only gave up a sack but his guy was constantly getting around him. He does play better as the game goes on but we can't afford for T-hill to get killed early in a game either.

Yes, you can.

The only difference is the person in his place would've been the one getting speared.

The guy who made the Tackle said he went Low On Purpose. He meant to hit him on his knee.

You can't "Imagine", that if someone else was in his place he wouldn't have gotten hurt. Cause that is what some of you are doing, Imagining if it was someone else he wouldn't have gotten hurt.

Now if Keller blew his ACL like how Revis did without contact. Then yes, you can't assume. But to say someone else in Keller place wouldn't have gotten hurt is Asinine.

Dashi isn't a Coward

Yellow (I see you dropped that from your name)

You cowardly refuse to admit Thomas had a way better game than Miller. It was you that swore he was the #1 back before the game, then you ran and hid from me when I asked you to concede who was the best back last night.

Was that bravery or cowardly?

I don't see the Fins signing another TE. It would be a huge waste. Nobody worth signing. And the TEs on the Roster already know the playbook.

Good thing Ireland has drafted a TE for 3 straight years. Let the young guys play.

Miller is a huge dissapointment. I was wtrong about him.

Paul I could not agree with you more. If that pass is thrown where it was supposed to Keller would still be playing. You do not see the Manning brothers, Brady, or Rodgers doing this to their receivers. Good QBs deliver the ball in stride, lead their receivers, and make sure they throw the ball where the receiver is not going to take a huge hit. I am really concerned about the other receivers on the team as I don't think that Tannehill's inaccuracy can be corrected (at least not this year). I hate to put this on Tannehill but that was a bad and dangerous pass that he threw to Keller. He basically hung him up to dry.

Hey Dad - I think there are a few realistic fans who post on this board and we are not seeing the negativity most of these dolts see.

Please here me correctly, I think LG and now TE are the two biggest question marks on offense. But I watched EVERY play Samuda had last night and he really only had 2 bad plays. They were costly and surely commanded the negative attention of coaches, sports writers and fans. But he really wasn't that bad when you look at all his work. He is the young and unproven guy on the OLINE so it's reasonable to assume he will make mistakes. But it's important to remember Jerry was also inconsistent and far from being a Pro Bowl Guard. In the end I PERSONALLY feel Samuda and Louis will be fine if Jerry doesn't return and earn back his spot.

The loss of Keller is really unfortunate because I see him as a reliable player for THILL and he would have made some big plays with teams doubling Wallace. But I just reviewed the "available" veteran TE's on the market. Most are OLD and/or Injured. Some are really blockers only. I would take Clay, Sims and Egnew and go with that for now. Maybe another young TE free agent rookie for depth. I am not too worried about that right now. Shame to lose Keller but it's not catastrophic.

You still talking about me, or to me.

Are you looking for acceptance from Dashi?

Funny, how Dashi shows up and you magically appear. F'ing Clown.

I already explained myself. Yet, you are right. Thomas killed it yesterday and L.Miller did Nothing. Never mind L.Miller had more than 20yds called back on penalties. And scored a TD.

Like I said, Funny to see so many D.Thomas Fans. When Dashi was the only one saying he is the #2.

You are bringing up a mute point. You Clown. While you have been calling D.Thomas a Bust with your other names. I know what he is capable of.

Trust me, Dashi will believe himself when rating RBs. Than some Coward on some blog.

E.Lacy doesn't look that bad either, does he.

I'm not saying I am better than everyone when determining talent. But I am better than most, and Definitely better than you cowards.

Samuda will probably be cut. I see 4 backups kept for the O-line. Dallas Thomas because he was a third round pick not because of his play, Will Yeatman as he is the only capable back up LT, Lance Louis, and Garner. No room for Samuda at this point. We don't have a lot of depth.

Posted by: jpao | August 18, 2013 at 01:01 PM

It's only because you guys refuse to see the negativity until seasons ends. The last 3yrs its come in the form of:

2010-- 6-10
2011-- 7-9
2012-- 7-9

For any of us, we no longer need load of bricks crashing overtop our heads at seasons end. We're learning greater respect for truth.

I'm afraid this isnt the last time Tannehill screws a receiver with a horrible pass.
