Dolphins start roster trim with starter Lane

It didn't look good for Jorvorskie Lane last March when the team signed multiple wide receivers, making the likelihood of a three-receiver, one back set tangible. It looked worse a couple of months ago when the team started actively pursuing fullback Vonta Leach.

And although Leach was not signed, it still looked bad when Lane, a starter in 2012, was demoted behind Evan Rodriguez at one point in camp.

Well, where there's smoke ...

Jorvorskie Lane was cut by the Dolphins moments ago.

Lane tweeted, "Great organization thanks for the opportunity much respect! *backtothedrawingboard."

He's among the nine players the Dolphins will cut by 4 p.m. today. Also among the group are linebacker Michael Clay and wide receiver Julius Pruitt.

Stay tuned as more cuts are coming.

UPDATE:

The Dolphins announced they have terminated the contract of RG Lance Louis.

I would not be surprised if the Dolphins revisit with Louis after the first game if he is still available. You re-sign him at that point and don't have to guarantee his salary for the entire season. Had he been on roster the first week, team would have had to guarantee $1.6 million.

They have also cut WR Jeff Fuller, DE Emeka Onyenekwu, WR Andrell Smith, LB Nathan Williams, LB David Hinds, and the aforementioned Pruitt, Lane and Clay.

Monte,

That's one THEORY....but doesn't mean you're right.

As I said, they've had 2-3 years to replace Jerry through the draft or FA.

Posted by: Craig M | August 27, 2013 at 05:03 PM

That because our GM is incompetent. 4 consecutive losing seasons.....AND COUNTING!!

If Ireland wants to save his job he will trade for a pass catching TE like Celek or Tamme in the next few days. He should be desperate enough at this point to give up a draft choice.

"bust" gets tossed around lately like the pundits use "elite" when discussing QBs--cracks me up.....elite?--there should be a small handful of QBs that are elite, and its not a short term measurement, something that should really change much year to year....and if it does, they're not elite--maybe "good", "very good", etc--consistently great QBs like Manning, Brady, Brees....Marino, Elway, Montana, Unitas, Stabler....they're elite.

Jake in PA,

I think you're dreaming getting your pass-catching TE. Why would any of those teams trade one of those guys? What were you hoping to give up? A third?

To me that's a waste of time. The loss of Keller is going to be tough to overcome but they need to find a way. Either one of the other guys need to step up or they need to get it done with their WRs or RBs. That's all there is to it I believe.

Craig were your born a Moron or did you learn it little by little?

Craig M is for MORON

I wonder if they'll keep Rodriguez or use Clay...

We all knew before Saturday night that Clay wasn't the most polished route runner but after 3 yrs. in NFL camps his efforts in underneath routes or seam (were he dropped a sure 6) make him expendable!! He makes the team by default but shouldn't get to comfortable!! He's a lousy run blocking FB and a below average route runner with IFFY HANDS making for pedestrian H-Back which equals the street in my book, no more space for roster filler on this team anymore!!

please pick up Vishante Shancoe TE from recently released Ravens,we need him, look what he did for brett farve in minnesota.please someone tell dolphins before someone else picks him up!!!!!!!

My that's a real side-splitter.....LOL.

Did you ever think of taking that material on the road? Or better yet, applying to be a writer on a sitcom and getting out of your Mother's basement?

Shancoe would be a decent addition. Agreed. Couldn't hurt with the other mix of guys we have. Surprised he got released to be honest. Tells me something must be up.

Craig M = out of touch canadien

Shancoe would be a decent addition.

Posted by: Craig M | August 27, 2013 at 05:24 PM

He was on NE last year. Guess how many passes he caught? None. They dumped him. The next team to pick him up dumped him fast.

Yet you in your infinite wisdom think we should pick up up. Got it.

or even Donte Stallworth WR just cut from the washington Redskins.someone with connect please inform Jeff "lame" Ireland to make a move that will save his job!lol

They cut the wrong Clay.
And they cut Lois Lane? Superman will be teed off.
Sorry, hurting for my web friend DD, sometimes I have to deflect with supposed humor.

DD, prayers to you and family from mine, and this group here, I'm certain.

Seems like they'll go with Dallas Clark as primary back up to Dickson, no surprise remember Shiancoe hasn't caught an NFL pass since 2011 while Clark played steady in Tampa last Yr. Given our need at Guard forget Shiancoe we should be looking at Norman Harewood who started 5 games at LG for Baltimore last Yr. Cogs can play either Guard and Harewood has an entire Camp under him. They let him go because 2012 2nd-RD pick Kelechi Osemele will start this Yr. for them there.

This is from the last blog.

"By the way, cornerback Will Davis, nursing what is believed to be an ankle injury, missed his second day of practice."
[Update 3: Head coach Joe Philbin declined to discuss Davis.]

Here's my question. Armando KNOWS Philbin doesn't discuss injuries so why does he insist on asking the question? If he knows the answer is not coming, that the coach has said MULTIPLE F%$#ING times that he won't discuss injuries, WHY ASK?! Just to waste time? Are you STUPID OR ARE YOU AN A-HOLE? Because it's definitely one of them.

Who is YG?

Arizona cut Dan Carpenter almost as soon as they signed him will go with Feely as Kicker

Boy Ireland has done a fantastic job of building depth hasn't he? The d-line is the only unit that can withstand an injury. I guess Jeff was hoping no one would ever get hurt because people don't get hurt that often in the NFL. lol

fin4life the Jets signed Carpenter today. Jets fans are already crying about it. :)

Phins78: the Jets are going to really need a FG kicker this year ... hope that's less true of us!

Bills pulled the plug on Da'Rick Rodgers.

I hope the Jets keep him.....we need him to push a couple of 44 yarders wide right when we play them

Carpenter is on the Jets.. Hooray

I thought they'd welcome him with open arms!! He was responsible for a puke green "W" in 2012, as he was in Tempe, Az. as well! Funny how he's been signed by the 2 teams he led to victory last Yr.?!

The guy who was cut today who may catch our F.O. attention is T.E. Leonard Pope.

Lance Louis, another free agent bust. I still can't believe Nolan Carroll is on this team. The Lane cut does not surprise me. Glad he had some time in the NFL, his was a good story.
Posted by: MassDolphan | August 27, 2013 at 04:24 PM

From what I've heard from Bear fans, Louis was the mediocre of an absolute terrible Bear oline in 2012. Being "best of the worst" doesn't qualify as being good.

Nolan Carroll. Timing isn't right to cut him now. Behind Patterson is Davis nursing an ankle injury. Then Jamar Taylor trying to get up to speed after missing nearly entire camp.

Meaning, we're a significant cb injury away from having a 4th corner right now. Davis is probably out for the final game. Meaning only 4 healthy corners going into that game. Everything after Carroll on the roster right now s worse garbage than he is.

Phins78: the Jets are going to really need a FG kicker this year ... hope that's less true of us!
Posted by: Anderson | August 27, 2013 at 05:55 PM

Jets need far more than a fg kicker, they'll need a missile launcher just to score 3pts. With their qb situation they'll be lucky to see within their opponent's 45 yard line with any kind of consistency this year.

NYC will launch a ticker tape parade everytime the Jets reach their opponent's 49yd line this year.

The Jets may break NFL's record for least amount of points scored this season. They may actually throw more picks than they score for the entire season.

It will be so bad Jets fans will pray for fistpumps and Tony Sparano is no longer around.

Jets need a fg kicker? That requires at least reaching your opponents 35yd line. I don't see that offense reaching their opponents 35yd line with tug boat in tow.

Boy I remember the good ole days of Griese Kick Csonka Warfield Buonaconti Fernandez Foley Mumphord Anderson the real #13 J.Scott Malone Little Langer Kuchenberg Stanfill The late great J.Mandich Fleming a real coach in D.Shula the greatest f ront office trio in pro sports history in J.Thomas G.Young and a very young bsach bum surfer boy name Bobby Bethard boy those was the days wow !! Now this franchise has gone to hell !! You had 2 owners in W.Huizenga and S.Ross who has no clue how to run or more importantly bring a winner back to Miami Gardens. You've had countless gm's over the past 30 years except for less than 1hand have drafted patheticly poor !! The fanbase has for the mosf part have no redpect nor care about those great men I'ved listed above. All I ask before I leave this planet is this once great franchise win 2-3 more super bowls that's all I ask Lord Jesus Christ that's it !!

You guys need to stop with signing scrub waiver wire te's. Even if brand name, their cut because teams no longer view them as "feature te's". We already have te's who can play behind other te's.

Best case scenario is pray Dion Sims develops in a hurry.

Same as Jonas Gray, he's a strong runner. How can we sneak him and Devlin into the PS without them being poached?

If we want a "real te" it will have to come in trade. In trade means we'll have to give up "something valuable".

We are not going to get a "real te" sifting thru everyone else's garbage. Nothing plus nothing doesn't equal something.......

I like Matt Moore. He's a decent QB. Sure, you'd like to have a proven #2 QB, but my confidence in Devlin is growing. You can see the talent and potential with him. I'd be surprised if Moore didn't make this team, but if I was the GM, I'd be shopping him for a TE and some offensive line depth. There's enough teams left that need a QB and Matt Moore would have some value in the present market.

Hate to stink on our rb corps, but.................

I have yet to see one Fin rb make the 1st guy miss this entire preseason. Not once!

Yet some of you are in delusion we have a decent rb corps. We have not one rb who can gain one single yard unless he clearly has a hole 100% of the time to run thru. Even te above avg rb's can make the first guy miss a time or two...

Agree, Shaun, but if they are going to trade Moore, please let it not be within our Division. He knows too much about us.

You know as well as I do that in this particular waive of cuts you either have over-the-hill or not-NFL-material! Very few CAP casualty cuts before Sat. at this point simply making conversation regarding who MIGHT get a looksy given obvious need.

I agree that Sims is best option, have read were some feel him Fasano type but even when around 15 Pds heavier still posted a 4.75/40 which is faster than Fasano's 4.8 (posted in 06 combine or a few Yrs. back looked slower) I hope team works on getting him into the mix by week-10 producing but what do we do till then?? Egnew is playing better in pass game but do you really start him?? Clay IMO should be let go, if for anything else to prove what underachieving will get you! In the mean time team in a pinch at position?!

Devlin's going into his 3rd season and cant unseat the backup qb(Moore). In today's NFL that isn't a very good sign.

Qb's are expected to be starters no later than their 2nd season. For Devlin to show any "real promise" he needed to at least unseat Matt Moore or cause "dead heat" in the decision at worst.

Right now, Devlin's absolute sealing maybe as a backup qb, or become a perennial 3rd stringer. #rd stringers are the qb's waiting for the phone call when starter goes down and backup qb becomes starter.

Therefore the "3rd string qb" is now the primary backup.

Yes, YG we don't have an exciting RB, those that can make something out of nothing, like Reggie Bush does. You and I know that. We'll see.

Fin4life,

I hope the team can have Sims in the mix by wk 4 at latest. By week 8 I hope he's our starter and never looks back.

Same as Jonas Gray, he's a strong runner. How can we sneak him and Devlin into the PS without them being poached?

I've been really pulling for J.Grey but in neck-n-neck battle with drafted rookie and fumbled away win in last game. The outcome didn't count but his fumble sure as hell did in his position battle.

We'll get nothing worthy waived, if any, before final cuts.

We have not one rb who can gain one single yard unless he clearly has a hole 100% of the time to run thru. Even te above avg rb's can make the first guy miss a time or two...

I'd say they can make 2 without a hole.

My concern with Miller is that he goes down easy and without a hole, he is going to take a beating.

Thomas I've always expected more from. For some reason I remember his few good moments when healthy, but he has been too inconsistent. Maybe the answer is to get Sims involved and take advantage of his blocking ability.

I can't think of any other team that has gone as long as we have without a true ace RB with the exception of Ricky's lone stellar season. Otherwise not since the the teams brief heyday back in the 70's.

It is dangerous to go with only 2 QBs and none in the PS, especially in these Times. Knees and shoulders more frail than Cranium.

There's enough teams left that need a QB and Matt Moore would have some value in the present market.

Posted by: Shaunhenesy | August 27, 2013 at 06:25 PM

Don't know who started the M.Moore talk but the ONLY WAY he doesn't make this team is if traded for starting caliber T.E., PERIOD! We gave him 3 Mil. in FA fully aware of his value to the team! Trading him gives Tannehill a sense of security the Coaches won't give him because he hasn't earned it!! Without discussing need if Tannehill (who pulled himself out last Yr. in N.Y. over a BOO BOO) got hurt. You guys feel Philbin benched him in a meaningless Pre-Season game because Matt took disrespect to mop up in Houston?? I doubt it because Philbin gets that if Tannehill (a running QB) got hurt his options without Moore could land him in the unemployed NFL Coaches scrap heap!

Fin4life,

I hope the team can have Sims in the mix by wk 4 at latest. By week 8 I hope he's our starter and never looks back.

Posted by: LOVE FAKING 17-0-IN-YUR-ASS! | | August 27, 2013 at 06:37 PM

My point is consistently, his talent should have him on field given competition in week-1 and YES! Not even looking back by late Nov. Would be nice to have a breakout player at T.E. again! Seems like forever!

benz @ 5:13

Everyone one you list of elite QBs won at least one Super Bowl, except for one - Marino.

Replace Marino with Flacco or Williams or Plunkett and the list is golden.

Bane, blow up doll #17 = YG

oscar canosa @ 6:30

You don't need to worry about Moore being traded within the division because he 'knows too much about us'.

First of all eveybody in the division knows everything about us already because Mando has published everything.

Second no one in the division wants Matt Moore because they know all that there is to know about him.

The Fins stink again this year.

Neither Devlin nor Josh Kaddu have shown nearly what they showed last year during pre-Season, reasons I know not. They have one last Game to show better. If not expect them to be cut or try to stash them on the PS.

The Best cut the Dolphins can make is to get rid of Jeff Ireland, He has no clue on football
personnal, He has made the Dolphins a good farm league team prepare them for two or three
years down the line. To play great for other teams. And get rid of the PRANCING DOLPHINS,
How low class can Ireland get, another one of his brainy ideas. He is the worst, wake up
Stephen Ross it is already too late.

The running game this year will be subpar as compared to last year. The Oline is more or less the same as last year's was except for RT. Mediocre at best in opening holes. But we have no scatback RB anymore that can get 10yds in a hurry or improvise some kind of long gain. Long Season for our RBs.

Depth? Did someone say something about depth? In Irescums 6th year the STARTERS STILL STINK!!

Packers need a RB, we have some.
Dolphins need a TE, they have some.

Gray for Finley???

If they had kept Reggie Bush, Jake Long, Anthony Fasano and Karlos Dansby they would have a little depth.

Just preparing You(and Me) not to be greatly disappointed. 7-9, at best.

What many fail to realize is that most of the teams better than us last year also got better, and they have players and coaches that have been together a lot longer.
