Fast start, sure, but Dolphins need more than that

By now you know Joe Philbin was asked what he's looking for tonight as the Dolphins play the Jacksonville Jaguars in their second preseason game. "Fast start," he said.

That was it.

Next question.

I sort of get it. Last week in the preseason opener against Dallas, the Dolphins got off to anything but a fast start. The starting defense gave up some yardage that flipped the field on the opening drive and then the offense, starting from their 9 yard line, fumbled on their first play.

The Cowboys then converted the turnover into a touchdown.

And that was after the Dolphins defense picked up a pass interference penalty in the end zone. And it soon became 17-0.

So, yes, the Dolphins don't want to make a habit of starting that slow anytime, not even in the preseason.

But as Philbin says he's looking for a fast start, I'm looking for more.

How about flipping the turnover margin? The Dolphins have invested a lot of time and energy and focus on winning the turnover battle every game this season. They preach ball security to the offense. They preach stripping and intercepting and taking the ball away to the defense. They even have footballs hanging in every defensive meeting room hanging from walls and alike so that players punch at them and get used to snatching them.

Well, last week, the Dolphins lost the turnover margin to Dallas. And two of those -- the Lamar fumble and an interception by Matt Moore that was returned 75 yards for a score -- led to points for Dallas.

So the focus the team has put on turnovers needs to start paying dividends.

From a team perspective I also would like better tackling. The tackling was bad last week. It was, as noted earlier on this blog, so bad that Dallas gained 93 rushing yards after contact on the Dolphins. That's got to get cleaned up before the season.

And then there is the rush defense. Last week the Cowboys gained 170 rushing yards. No, Randy Starks didn't play. Neither did Jared Odrick or Olivier Vernon or Dannell Ellerbe. I expect all of those except Starks to play today. With Maurice Jones-Drew not playing tonight for Jacksonville, the situation is set for the Dolphins to improve their defense against the run.

but u would love young guys doing it?

Amando indicates in his post that Philbins only wants a fast start and that Amando expects more of our Dolphins than the head coach. He expects improved tackling and turn over ratio. Clearly Philbin thinks that repeating the turnover mantra will only get him so far, at some point he needs to take a step back ("start fast") send the team out with a bit of encouragement so they can figure it out for themselves.

Amando needs to calm down a bit, he was almost hysterical on NFL AM the other day.

and suck balls he has.

That was the trade i would not have made... trading that much for a 38 year old pitcheer .. i don't care what pitch he throws ... is just assinine

they were ripping armando apart on twitter, nothing to do with fins just his opinions on everything calling him mr negative

Am I middle aged now? When did this happen?? Oh well, as long as my thingy this works and I can still attract women to play with it then I'm happy.

dusty, I've been doing that here for months ... guy is ultra negative.

yeah probaly why hes stuck at a paper making nothing. papers are about dead, most already gone or going. shocked they dont charge on here yet

So much hate

Will our #1 pick grace us with his presence as a starter tonight? Or is he taking some more time off?

Mark and dusty,

No question AA got taken to the cleaners in the offseason. Like Mark, I hated the Dickey trade from the get-go. I liked adding Reyes but not sure what else of value the Jays got. Johnson Is awful! Not sure how AA and Gibbons keep their jobs.

I don't think Jordan will be a starter at all thisyear.

Last night I had a dream where I was best friends with Ryan Tannehill. He invited me to his house and Lauren cooked me dinner and then we played Madden until 3am. I told him he needed to roll out to the right more and taught him how to not lock onto receivers. Then Lauren gave me a kiss on the cheek and said I was their best friend. Will anybody here be my friend?

This story puts way too much emphasis on a preseason game that the coaches never game planned for. Unless the players on the team are regressing from where they were last year (come on now) I don't expect the team we saw last week is the one that will be on the field against the Browns.

I see once again Kris got smoked last night. He should avoid trying to debate anyone over 5.

In June I met a guy at the store and he called me a loser. :(

Craig, heard some rumblings of Minnesota and Ron Gardenhire not exactly being ecstatic with one another this year. Now that's a man I'd love to lead the Jays. Dominican Resort Country Club days would be over in Toronto...

In August I feel that my life will turn around and will find a real friend. I think you all will like me if only you give me a chance. :(

I like you Billy

I'd love to see Gardenhire in TO. I never got the Gibby hiring in the first place. Didn't like him the first time. Gardenhire is one of the most under-rated managers in the game.

Me neither Craig. My initial impression of Gibby was that he was dumb and never held players accountable.

Having batista hit 2nd for the majority of the year re-affirmed my thoughts.

You started it loooong ago! Nobody to blame but yourself! You thought you can be condescending because (in your mind) you believe your knowledge of the game and intellect head-n-shoulders above everybody elses and you couldn't be any more WRONG if you tried! Your comparisons about how some of todays players compare to former greats is laughable as HELL! I told you before your a PARIAH to all here, a typing fool, the punchline! You are CYBER OJ and simply don't get that NOBODY cares for you or your BS!

We're all hoping that
several years from now...

Right now, lets just hope Ryan Tannehill can become the Ken O'Brien(1983) of this draft class(2012).

O'Brien was always pretty solid, but never overly spectacular. Even beating Marino a few times.

Posted by: LOVE FAKING 17-0-IN-YUR-ASS! | | August 08, 2013 at 01:28 PM

Again your STANDARD for QB play is LAUGHABLE! I remember O'Brien well! I believe he took the Jets to the Playoffs a GRAND TOTAL of 2 X's in his storied carrier!!!

LMFAO at your observations of what you consider steady to good QB play in history, let me guess O'Brien was another player snubbed by HOF VOTERS while not getting much deserved respect along with the GREAT Joe Furgeson, BWAAAAAAH HAAAAAAH!

I haven't looked it up but BET THE F'N HOUSE he lost more games than he won as an NFL QB. In your detraction of Marino's career you claimed that while Marino put up numbers his inability to win in the post Season made him a footnote historically then you make outlandish posts about who you'd LIKE TO SEE Tannehill's game mirror??

At this point POSTING in absolute cicles, one guy was GREAT because the #'s don't LIE another was legendary because while the #'s don't bare out he was a WINNER?? Can't seem to ever make up your mind, was it the #'s or was it the wins, guess it all depends on the argument your looking to make, sounds like alot of FLIP FLOPPING to me!

Listen BRAINIAC O'Brien was a SACK-MACHINE in the NFL, yes he beat Marino head-to-head given our D in the late 80's took the mantra from the early 80's Chargers about how really TERRIBLE D could KILL even the GREATEST OF OFFENSES, PERIOD! TJ Turner, Mike Charles and Co. had career games Vs. your guy cause he held the ball to long!

There's even a famous clip of O'Brien being sacked by LT were the camera's catch Taylor relling him,"Son your gonna have to do better than this"

In straight up competition the Jets won games were O'Brien managed to put up over 35 points if not they had no shot given Marino was always close to dropping 40 on them. The difference being their Defense was much better starting up front on the DL with Klecko, Gastineau, Marty Lyons and Abdul Salaam OR The N.Y. SACK EXCHANGE, MLB Lance Mehl was no push over either yet Marino scored on them at will!

Please do yourself a favor and go look up this guys stats before embarrassing yourself with such idiotic comments any further!! If you want to make a smart reference or paralell about a QB from the 83 Class whose name doesn't get mentioned with the BIG-3 (Marino, Elway, Kelly) an who you'd like to see Tannehill end up being like from the 2012 QB Class in terms of how they'll fair historically TRY Tony Eason who WON MORE THAN HE LOST and beat Miami & Marino at home in an AFC Champoinship game actually taking his team to S.B.XX.

Tannehill was ok for a rookie qb last season. That's the Tannehill I don't want to see this season. He needs to be better than ok this year....

Really??? WOW!! Unbelievable insight, your keen eye fr the obvious astounds!

It was one of you circle jerkers who said their wife changed the locks on them. But I can careless whoever, whatever... whatever....

Probably if said was in a quick passing statement and out of so many things debated here daily this is the one thing that sticks in your mind.

How can you be anything but negative whn the team loses every friggin year?

What's really funny is that Kristy, when asked, has never responded as to whether he'd want his grown up daughter to bring home an odinstank or dashIdiot.

He just evades the question, which is of course a firm answer.

So basically his blog buddies are nobody he'd ever want his daugher associated with. I don't blame him.

I want to Ryan Tannehill run an offense like Andrew Luck, decisive, accurate and in control.

How could anyone be positive when we have the worst owner and GM in sports?

thill isnt luck, luck is amazing. just need thill to develop into solid starter

Go Dolfan

I want to see this kind of monster that Jared Odrick has supposedly developed into. He's definitely in his right position now. If he can get that push in the middle, where's Brady going to hide?

"So basically his blog buddies are nobody he'd ever want his daughter associated with."

Certainly, the main thing *I* look for in a friend is whether I'd want him banging my daughter. Because I have serious, freaky psych issues.

Oh wait, sorry, that's not me; apparently, it's you.

Being positive now is like being negative after a Super Bowl win. Its ass backwards.

Let's see, there are only two people on the planet that would come to Kris's defense, but out of shame in a phony name.

Eenie meenie mynie moe.....

Lmao some of the idiots here actually think I care about what they think.

Dashi has no life, no family.

Oscar is a wino.

Mark should be watching the CFL.

Odinstank drives a tow truck.

Fin4life can barely read.

I'm better than ALL of you and the only one here who has a clue.

Our DE's Vs Luke Joeckle

2nd overall LT and player chosen in the 2013 draft.

Cam Wakes rushes vs the opponent's right tackle. So, it will be very interesting to see Vernon or Jordan vs Joeckle on the other side.

Tonight we'll find out just how good Vernon or Jordan really are....

FASTWAY are the s h i t !!!

Ryan Tannehill will be forgotten several years from now.

pinhead4life has got to be Odistank in blue. Every post has to takes an entire page. Signaling psychological imbalance:

"Look At Me", "Notice Me Please"........

These idiots change screen names(pinhead4life = Odistank). Yet the psychological imbalances still come "SCREAMING" thru......

The proof's in the pudding. Odistank takes an entire page with cut and paste posts. pinhead4life does it without cut and paste. If it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, and quacks like a duck.

bobby 20 bucks?? wtf rip off

Would you trade Tannehill for Gabbert? hmmmm

uh no gabbert blows, almost bad as henne

Hear it on the Radio. We grew up that way and believe me sometimes is better.

Sorry Dusty, I didn't realize it was pay. I just gave the info from an Adam Beasley Tweet. I wouldn't pay $20 bucks either for Pre Season games.

Sometimes, when Mad Dog was alive, I used to both see and hear the Game. Many of those TV announcers are incompetent and partial against Us.

This is all you got?? No Football related refute of any kind Hahhh?? Here I thought you'd give me a nugget from that high Football I.Q. og yours! I was soooo looking forward to it as well! The only thing I copy-n-post come from your enlightened writing but you choose the topic and off we go regarding things usually seeming what they are. Let's see you choose a handle refrencing male anus? Your innuendo usually sexual in nature is aimed at men? Your right if it barks like a dog??
