Here's what's new at Dolphins camp

The Dolphins today worked out a couple of free agent defensive tackles as both Randy Starks and Jared Odrick missed practice with unknown injuries that the team will not report until prior to Sunday's Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio.

Starks, who missed practice Thursday but was present on the sidelines, was not even on the field today. He appeared to be nursing a leg injury of some sort Thursday. Odrick, who was healthy at the beginning of practice Thursday but had an issue midway though, worked with trainers on the side today. He similarly appears to have a leg injury of some sort.

It's obvious neither Starks nor Odrick will play Sunday against Dallas in the HOF game.

Receivers Mike Wallace and Brian Hartline were the other starters to miss today's practice due to injuries. Wallace (groin) and Hartline (calf) are making steady improvement with their issues. Wallace said as much today and Hartline was no longer wearing the compression sleeve on his calf that he wore for protection on Thursday.

Although coach Joe Philbin said he has not made up his mind whether the injured players will play or not, it seems unlikley the club will risk either aggravating their minor injuries in the first of five preseason games. Both Wallace and Hartline want to play, however, with Hartline going back to his home state and Wallace potentially making his Dolphins debut.

The Dolphins will take a tour of the Hall of Fame in Canton Ohio Saturday. And on Sunday when they play the Cowboys, they'll be using a rudimenary game plan coaches cooked up and installed on Friday.

"Play speed is really the thing we've been talking to our guys about," Philbin said. "It's not really about Xs and Os although we have a good sound plan in. I'm sure our opponent has a good plan in as well, but it's more about our guys playing ball the right way. The things we've been practicing every single day have to show up on tape."

If the Dolphins are hoping to play "the right way" Friday's practice didn't offer an example of that.

"A lot of dropped passes and maybe some sloppiness on kickoff returns," Philbin said. "You saw the same things I did."

This is what I saw:

First, Jonathan Martin did not give up a sack today. That bears prominent mention because he's been singled out every time he loses pass-rush battles against Olivier Vernon and Dion Jordan. Today there was none of that.

And it merits mention that Martin looks very good in run-blocking drills and has looked good for several days in that department.

The well-chronicled offensive line mixing and matching was not an issue today. Josh Samuda played at right guard with the staring offensive line and that's how the unit stayed throughout practice -- although Samuda also got work as a center with the second team.

Expect the starting OL Sunday to be LT Martin, LG Richie Incognito, C Mike Pouncey, RG Samuda, RT Tyson Clabo.

Dallas Thomas, a left guard part of last week, was back at left tackle with the second unit throughout practice. Nate Garner, who has played guard and tackle in games for the Dolphins in the past, worked at center today. He had one high snap and also short-hopped a shotgun snap.

On the special teams sloppiness:

It began with a kickoff walk-thru in the Nick Saban Memorial Bubble (NSMB). Special teams coach Darren Rizzi told undrafted free agent rookie David Hinds he had to shift over on one repetition and Hinds failed to do it.

And Rizzi lit him up.

"I just got done telling you to shift 10 seconds ago," the coach yelled. "We went over it in meetings and I just told you 10 seconds ago to do it so why aren't you doing it?"

Hinds did have a nice practice moment later when he batted down a potential TD pass in the end zone in 7 on 7 drills.

Rizzi's special teams had other issues. Reserve kickoff return man De'Andre Presley flubbed a kickoff return. Then starter Marcus Thigpen let another kickoff bounce in front of him. The ball then bounced away from Thigpen and was free for the kickoff team to scramble for. Then Presley followed by allowing the same exact thing to happen to him.

The Dolphins got a very good practice out of wide receiver Keenan Davis. Davis had the catch of the day when he rose above two defenders who were bracketting him 30 yards downfield and caught a pass from Pat Devlin. Davis paid the price as the safety playing behind hit him high and the one in front hit him low. The blow was so hard it caused the crowd watching practice to groan in unison.

General Manager Jeff Ireland, standing only feet from the play on the sideline, clapped excitedly as Davis ended up at his feet.

Everyone else had their difficult moments. Those dropping passes today included Dustin Keller, Michael Egnew, and Kenny Stafford. Julius Pruitt caught one pass and then fumbled it. Kelcie McCray, who had an interception in Monday's scrimmage, dropped an interception. Rookie Jamar Taylor also dropped a certain interception.

The kicking competition continued today with rookie Caleb Sturgis connecting on all his kicks, from 42, 47 and 52 yards out.

I see problems developing. Injuries on the interior of the D-line tisk tisk. This team won't be able to stop the run or the pass. Dolphins get blown out this year several times. Prepare your paper bags sperm whale fans.

Thanks again for your ludicrous comments. Keep them coming please!

Keller was signed to a one year contract for a reason...same as Grimes. No one in the league wanted him, including the Dolphins. That's why he was only given a one year deal. You people talk as if these two are pro-bowlers. Take off the rose colored glasses. You're unrealistic expectations for this team will leave you bitterly disappointed.

Btw, no player has ever made it through a full season after having Grimes' injury and subsequent procedure. Enjoy Nolan Caroll as your #1 corner. Lmao and some of you are talking playoffs...PLAYOFFS !

Yes, more of this! BTW, what part of the new logo speaks to the homosexuals in your opinion?

Delusional Dolphins fans, so pathetic and desperate for a winner. Clinging to hope, waving Obama signs...tears in their eyes I guess...cinderella team. AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN...can't wait.

What does a 25 year old virgin and a Dolphins fan have in common ? They're both pathetic and desperate.

Phins78 only nmakes two types of posts

1. rag on the trolls
2. agree with one of his CJ buddies

nothing more.

Since he changes his name once a year, he is do for another one.

I worked in marketing for years. The logo was designed to have its appeal with females. Studies have shown that it is women who buy most of the clothes for a family. The Dolphins purposely chose a logo that would have its appeal with both females and non-football fans. Their interest is in winning over people who have a casual interest, thus expanding their market. This comes at the expense of those who could be considered hardcore...the team's loyal fan base. They know that the product on the field will sell this faction...so they're not interested in pleasing you much at all (see circus sideshows, penguins at the stadium). This was all a part of Mike Dee's "Aggressive Marketing Strategies"...and it's an approach that's all too common nowadays. The Dolphins attitude, Charlie Sheen "I've got your money dude." The Dolphins logo is effeminate by design. Like me, those of you wanted a tough logo were just dreaming. The Dolphins were never going to go that direction. Look at the Eagles logo, or the Seahawks. The new Dolphins logo is embarrassing and an utter disgrace. Ninety plus percent of the comments on the internet have expressed disappointment and outrage. Lose and the logo will flop same as it is in its picture. Btw, you asked how it looks homosexual. The Dolphins look like a bunch of dudes with flowers behind their ears. Look at how goofy the asymmetrical design looks on the helmets. Wait til other fans see this logo on Sunday and throughout the rest of the season. Scroll around the internet and see what fans are saying. The logo is effeminate, it's gay...wear it on your sleeve and you may as well put a rainbow underneath it.

It also happens to be semi-pro amateur (Google Boston Breakers). Ross is a USFL man, he now has a USFL team.
Some of you have been calling the Dolphins a laughingstock for years. The laughing has only just begun for this joke of a franchise. Wear that logo to an opposing teams stadium lmao. You'll want to get back in your car and leave. At least you can always take comfort in knowing that you're helping to do your part for Florida's economy...by advertising for Sea World (also done by design). An effeminate Sea World logo replacing tradition and an NFL icon. Wear it with pride...gay pride.

...I think it is great that fans-bloggers are excited or this team. For this new crop of players. Especially the rooks. But I think it is a bit over the top to claim that this class is going to be the "best Ireland class" before we have seen any of them play.

Every draft class, on every team has this chance. So sure we have a shot. I hope these guys do play as well as most of you who have made this claim say, or project. IMO last years draft class has the best shot to be Irelands best. In fact if last years crop fails. IMO Ireland isn't going to be around to see this years class develop.

Think about it...Tannehill. The most important player on the field. If he flops then what? Jon Martin? He has been trusted to take over a huge role in this offense. We passed on plenty of quality vets in favor of Martin(for whatever reasons the team had) He is a HUGE question mark. Lamar Miller... Can he be the feature back? I love the fact we went this direction because IMO we have an opportunity to be better. Reggie Bush was Ok..Miller has a shot to be better then ok. There is also the possibility he is a complete liability. Running back not nearly as important as tackle or quarterback..But an Ireland pick none the less.

I haven't even mentioned this years group.. I don't know who Dion Jordan is. I'm not sure any of us do. He will not be graded on this year. Although I think there is some pressure for him to contribute. I just don't believe you move up into the top 3 to grab a player that is purely there for development .The thought has to be contribution day 1..In my mind.

There are a lot of young guys that will be asked to play. We will see how they fit in, how they can contribute right away. Add the mix of high priced free agents. And I think there is a ton on the line for our GM this year. I think before praise, or critique. We should see the product on the field. You may love what he(Ireland has done) your gut may tell you...He nailed it. And you may be right. Lets see before baking a cake.

Will Davis will be the #2 cb because he is making turnovers

...@ 12:35...Boston Breakers..That is hilarious. Youre right though. It looks just like it.

For me I could care less about the logo. I don't buy fan gear. I don't put much stock into the new style uniforms. All I care about is ease of the eyes on television. And these new uniforms are easy to watch. What I mean is some of the college uni's..the way out there kits. Make the game hard to watch. To me the most important thing in this new era of football is how does it translate to TV..The unis definitely do. Better then those freakshow orange, and green wtf's that they wear on Monday night. They look like pumpkins. Better then the red field at Eastern Washington, or the blue turf at Boise...not uni's but gimmicky attention grabers..Just like most new unis.

These are neutral. They won't take away from the game. So why the issue?

Dear NEW LOGO IS GAY,
If you hate the dolphins so much get off this app the fins will go 11-5 or 12-4 and you will have to watch them do it and know that you are just a hater

New Logo is gay,

How do you feel about them Jets uniforms and all the great talent they have added?

If this were "Ireland's best draft class" would that be something special. Ireland has never drafted anything other than busts and mediocre players. Like Tannehill, Pouncey was a reach to fill a need...and because he can't block at the point of attack he's a guard not a center. If you can't run behind your center on 2nd and 1, 3rd and 1...he's not a center. Jake Grove was better...he just couldn't stay healthy. Yet health issues aren't important to Lil Jeffy. Enter feature back Reggie Bush, Justin Smiley, J Odrick (injury prone in college, he missed his entire rookie season in Miami) and his latest unhealthy players Dion Jordan, Brent Grimes. Dolphins will never win squat with Jeff Ireland. Privately Bill Parcells would agree at this point.

Pounce is the best center in the NFL and just because a player is injured like Jordan doesn't mean he is injury prone if that was true then RG3 is injury prone and so is dee milliner and almost all other NFL players

Brent grimes did great in OTA he is a pro bowl caliber CB

Elite prospects from 2013 Draft

D.Jordan
J.Taylor
D.Thomas
W.Davis

That is future franchise DE, future CB duo, and future LG.Maybe LT next year if Martin does suck.

Elite Prospects from 2012 Draft

T-Hill
L.Miller
O.Vernon

J.Martin fringe player. Let's let this season play out.

But we got our Franchise QB and Franchise RB in the same Draft. Plus hit on a DE.

Parcells sucked, Spo sucked, Ireland was the only one that actually did his job.

He "Scouted" a Good Coach. Who in turn has given him better direction so he can scout better players for said coach.

On the Parcells-Ireland rift story:
"...it is assumed that he is referring to the trip with Ross to try and hire Harbaugh...".

That was also around the same time Henne told the Phins to go phuc themselves. Remeber Parcells only drafts QB's that have at least 25 wins in college (Henne & Pat White). If Parcells were still with the team then Tanne would not have been drafted here.

Maybe that is the real rift.

Always sad when you have Jets fans trolling a Dolphins blog and it's only preseason. Speaks volumes about they feel about their team this year.

How many years without a championship guys?....yep, thought so.

Craig only a buffoon would think jet fans spend their time here. Once in awhile maybe, all these posters here are just the regulars taking out their frustrations.

Parcells-Ireland rift

So once again we have a so-called journalist making a guess as to what the truth of a situation is and then spinning a fictional account and topping it off with a headline that leads the reader to believe that it is the truth.

How trivial a mind those have to accuse every negative blogger of being a jet fan. So childish.

You are a jet fan, neh neh neh neh.

Grow up.

Craig,
I lived in Long Island/NYC area for a total of about 33 years.
I never heard anyone, Jets fan or otherwise, mention the Dolphins at all. Even when the Jets played them they never talked about the Phins.
If the Jets won they talked about some good plays that turned the game.
If the Jets lost they talked about some crap plays that turned the game.
They never mentioned the Phins or Bill or Pats or Steelers or Cowboys or Raiders or anybody else because they simply don't care.

Clarification

I moved out of New York a month before 9/11.
At the time I was rooting for whatever team Brien Greise played for.
Then my real hero Chad Henne came along and here we are.

D Thomas is no elite prospect. He looks at best and average starter or long term back up.

I think the two CB's will be the key to judging this draft. We need two young CB's for the future. That will let us cherry pick the next draft.

Speaking of Brien Greise:

Everybody remember when Peyton was at Tenn and all we heard over and over were the great football 'genes' that Peyton had?
Not once was were Brien Griese's 'genes' mentioned.
Griese won the Nat'l Championship, Peyton never did.
As a rookie Griese was Elway's backup when Elway won his 2nd SB so Griese has a Super Bowl ring, a Rose Bowl ring and Nat'l C-ship ring and still no one, other than me, ever mentioned his 'genes'.

2015,
Are you referring to D Thomas RB or D Thomas G?

Lmao Weldon is the smartest bolgger here. I was a Phins fan 1982-2012. Now I despise this model of corporate greed. Twelve dollar beers, nine dollar pretzels, forty dollars to park, two hundred dollar tickets, T-Pain fight songs, Enrique Ilgasius (at a frikken football game ffs !!!), minority owners, orange carpet nonsense, paid celebrity appearances, Jimmy Buffet...I could deal with all of that crap. But put flowers behind their ears (new logo) and expect me to invest my time, money and emotions...I'm done. The logo change was the last straw. Yeah, I'm a Jets fan now...and a Bills fan and a Patriots fan. I find a moron with a Free Hernandez hat hard to root for as well. Even the Quack's Hospital patches on the practice uniforms should be enough to upset people. Next it'll be the regular uniforms. Corporate greed won't stop spreading like the cancer it is until people first take notice of it (anyone here like Publix's prices ?) Also, those of you who see an 11-5 or 12-4 season are on crack. Phins haven't been 12-4 SINCE 1990 (and they overachieved that year). They were 11-5 in 2008 (overachieved that year as well). Best case scenario for this team would be 9-7. It's considerably more likely that they'll be 7-9. I will be here laughing.

Gay,
If you're going to rrot for another team why does it have to be an AFC-E team?
Why can't it be another FL team?

There are no Jets fans here. Dont flatter yourselves. Its PISSED OFF DISGRUNTLED DOLFAN FANS THAT HATE THE FACT THAT HE TEAM STINKS!!!!

Dude,
Why the bad mood?

Craig only a buffoon would think jet fans spend their time here.

CRAIG IS A BUFFOON!

Dear GAY,
The dolphins would of gone 9-7 if it wasn't for carpenters missed field goals that is why the dolFANS here se us going 11-5 or 12-4

It was Sparano tha drafted Pouncey not Ireland. It was well publicized that Sparano badly wanted Pouncey and had been given more say by Steve Ross.

If you are going to root against a FL team and call their logo gay it should be the marlins they have a hate able owner that traded away all the good players exept Stanton

D, Thomas Guard.

I like D Thomas the RB even if nobody else does.

If, If If, If If, LMFAO!! If my grandma ad balls she'd be my grandpa!! LMAO!!

Are you talking about Carpenter's misses in 2012?

Or are you talking about the 4 misses in the 2010 game? The non-called fumble in the end zone against Pitt was also in 2010 so that season we should have been 9-7 also.

The Vegas Line is 7.5 wins. There is no better prognosticator.

We still get to have our opinions though.

"How can a man be so insecure about their age?"

If he admitted he was 61 he would then have to admit he spends most of his free time in a blog with random guys and I don't think he's ready to come out to us yet. AND, he would have to admit to childish behaviour you would see from a thirteen year old. I don't even think he wants to admit that to himself. Can you imagine this guy might be someone's Grandfather? Holy cripes that's scary!

In the 4 missed FG game we lost by 2 pts I think.

If Carpenter makes one of those kicks and the Pitt fumble is called correctly the we would have been in the postseason that year. And Henne always has big games when he is on Nat'l TV.

Oh well.

That 7.5 was published before the injuries to Wallace and Hartline; it was also issued before they started shuffling the O-line.

As much as I like this team I have to take the under.

STFU New Logo...NOBODY gives a flying FK about your opinion. NOBODY! Nor do they give a chit that you obviously have homosexual fantasies and frustrations pent up from years and years of dreaming of the knob. not that theres anything wrong with that. Im jsut saying, no one wants to read your garbage. Go back to slapping your wife around because she doesnt have a PENIS.

LOSER

Hey guys! If we played perfect we could've went 17-0 last year!!!

Jack! (ETF)

Yest these bloggers are really freaking dumb and gullible.

It's UNREAL!

Politicians LOVE people like this.

I've never seen a worse RB then D Thomas.

Really, don't give this guy a hard time. His life obviously revolves around a football team. When they win his life has meaning, when they lose his life is horrible. That's why he's in here screaming about it. A normal person would accept it and hope for the best. This guy lives so vicariously through other peoples accomplishments that he absolutely loses it when anyone questions his posts. You shouldn't dislike him or accuse him of being a Jets fan you should just feel pity for him.

The Dolphins do the exact same thing getting rid of their best players. Brandon Marshall, Jake Long, Wes Welker, Reggie Bush, Karlos Dansby. At least the Marlins have 2 recent WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS to none for the Dolphins. And the Marlins stadium is state of the art compared to the dump the Dolphins play in.

You can't use a hundred sign in names and claim them all as your own. Also, you get banned for impersonating people who actually bother to register and sign in so their name appears in blue. How many of those names do you see here? All names in black and white are fair game and if you want a name to yourself start signing in, otherwise don't complain.

Are you a broken record?

You see Tony Nathans post? Meaningless drivel trying to incite a gullible poster into pages of worthless debate. Taking bets on who will bite!

Steve Ross, save the Dolphins. SELL THE TEAM!
