John Offerdahl to the Honor Roll

Old-time Dolphins middle linebacker Nick Buoniconti is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Latter-day Dolphins middle linebacker Zach Thomas may someday be considered for the Hall of Fame. Both are in the prestigious Dolphins Honor Roll at Sun Life Stadium.

And in a couple of hours at the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce Kickoff luncheon, the Dolphins will announce that the middle linebacker who was something of a link between Buoniconti in the 1970s and Thomas in the 1990s is also going to be inducted into the Honor Roll.

John Offerdahl, who played for Miami from 1986 to 1993, will be announced as the 26th member of the Honor Roll.

He will be inducted on Thursday, Oct. 31 at halftime of the primetime game between the Dolphins and the Cincinnati Bengals. There are 24 individuals and one team -- the perfect season team of 1972 -- already on the Dolphins Honor Roll.

Offerdahl, 48, is a deserving choice.

Although his career was way too short for the liking of most Miami fans, Offerdahl was a five time Pro Bowl player from his rookie year in 1986 to 1990. He struggled with injuries throughout his career but when he was healthy, he was the anchor to a defense that definitely could have used more players like him.

Offerdahl went to the Dolphins as a second round pick out of Western Michigan. When he was picked (he was the first player the Dolphins selected in '86 because they didn't have a first-round selection) most pundits said, "Who?"

Offerdahl quickly made a name for himself with impeccable tackling. He was an excellent run-stopper and solid in pass coverage. So, yes, he was a three-down linebacker.

Offerdahl, who is a successful restaurant chain entrepeneur, is having a very good year. He was inducted into the Mid-American Conference Hall of Fame earlier this year.

D-Rod, I agree with what you posted.

According to Kollman from the Texans Battle Red Blog it is probable that neither Watt or Ed Reed will play. Shame. But on O their receivers including rookie phenom(up to now) DeAndre Hopkins + the great play action of Matt Shaub will severely test our pass D.

BAGELS!

Kris,

Me and You had this discussion before. But like you said this season will either prove me right, or prove you're Right on Flacco.

I believe Flacco isn't even better than Henne. Flacco just had one of the Best Leaders of this Generation on his team. Ray willed that team to a Superbowl.

Remember, Dashi wanted Kuechly at #8, but knew Sherman was going to draft his boy.

I believe the Most important FA we signed was Ellerbe.

Yes, The QB is the Most important player on a Football Team. But the 2nd Most important player on the Team is the MLB. And more times than not, The Emotional Leader of a team is the MLB.

QBs lead 4th Qtr Comebacks. MLBs Stop them.

Flacco was choking after the Blackout during the SB.

SOMEONE IS LYING ABOUT THE DOLPHINS

I just went back to that CBS Sports site and went to the the Phins page.

According to the site our defense was ranked 21st overall last season not top 10. We were 13th against the run and 27trh against the pass.

Why would CBS Sports lie about that when mando told us we had the #8 overall defense?

WHEN I HEAR OFFERDAHL I THINK OF BAGELS

D-Rod,
Are you really Dashi?
If so it is cool with me.

Stanfill is already in, but like your other inductees.

Sam Madison and Patrick Surtain also deserve the honour soon

Ed Newman is long overdue

ETF, CBS is often wrong....

No I am not D-Rod

Yes to Madison and Surtain, now that I thik about it, What about Troy Vincent!

ETF, those saying the Dolphins had a top 10 defensse (I was not one of those) is based on pts allowed, not yards.

Tim Bowens?

Glad to hear this for John. One of just a few former Miami Dolphins I have actually had the opportunity to sit back and drink a beer or two with and talk to about Shula, Marino and the team and Johns time in Miami with them. When he opened his second "Offerdahl's" he would be in the restaurant all the time. Make rounds at the tables and speak to fans while games were on. Offerdahl's is one of the better spots to catch a game if you've never been. GREAT Dolphin atmosphere and cheerleaders frequent the joint in they're little outfits (yummy).... Anywho... Glad to hear it for him... Career way to short because of a really nasty abdominal muscle tear in 89. After that tear the thing just kept coming back. Not a common injury, I don't think I've heard about a player with an abdominal muscle TEAR in years.

For Dashi the Best MLB in Fins History is Z.Thomas.

Z.Thomas played Mind Games with Brady, and Was on Par with Peyton as Far as Football IQ goes.

That was a Thing of Beauty. Peyton Vs Zach. Talk about a Chess Match. They would try and outdo each other pre snap.

Vincent should be a borderline NFL hall of famer but his best years were split between Miami/Philly. Was he a great dolphin or a great football player. I think he was more a great football player.

If you Vincent up there then you should consideer Keith Jackson's six pro bowls...

Marino,
If someone says the D is ranked 8th but it is really ranked 7th or 9th then that is a mistake or a typo.

But if one reporter says they are ranked 8th overall and another says 21st overall that is not a mistake or a typo.

That is an indication that one of them is lying.

Dolphins had a Top 10 Defense until Dansby started throwing games.

Does induction in Dolphins hall of fame get you VIP lobstertube access?

Bowens should be considered after you get Manny Fernandez up there first..

Manny Fernandez was legally blind when he played ... crazy..

Did anyone see that Lesean Mccoy run against the Panthers. That was a crazy run, 3 or 4 Panthers were tackling air.

I was yelling at the TV in excitement,I never do that unless its the Phins playing and that is usually cuz they are making me angry LOL

Breeze,
That sounds pretty cool.
I want to see some of these cheerleaders close up.
Does Offerdahl's have linguine and white clam sauce on the menu?
If so how much is it?

Zach was my favourite (because I was old enough to fully grasp the game when he played and a lot moe visibility due to sunday ticket as well) but looking at their accomplishments, Offerdahl should've been up a long time ago.

rdubs, you get to watch it in the vip box and they provide a gold robe and the i hear the softest wipes anyone has ever laid their eyes on

Offerdaul was a great player. No doubt. I can understand why many feel he was our best LB ever. Completely dominant when healthy. Personally though, having been a fan since the beginning, for our number one best linebacker I still go with Nick. He was not as physically dominant, although he was physically excellent. But the thing he had going for him was that he was so smart in watching the other team, figuring out what they were doing, instructing the other guys and in walking over to the place where he knew they would come and be there. Other people needed great speed because they had to react. Nick was so smart that he knew the play at the same time the offense did and could just manage to always be there. That said, Offerdahl would definitely have been a HOFer had he not gotten taken down by injuries.

Brien Griese made his NFL starting debut against us on MNF does anyone else remember?
Jeff Garcia did not complete a pass until mid 2nd qtr; even so the announcers could find no fault with Garcia and no praise for Griese.
Zach did the postgame interview.

Never saww Nick play but I look at his career accomplishments , among them 8 times All Star/Pro Bowl. That's more than anyone who ever wore the Dolphisn uniform except Dan (9 times). That has to be respected for both longevity and excellence. hard for a non-qb to be an all star 9 times.

My Miami/Havana vacation is really starting to take shape:
I will start at Offerdahl's and kick off the trip with a plate of delicious Linguine with White clam.
Then I will travel with Dashi to Hialeah and he will introduce me to the cheap hot Cuban chicks.
Then I will travel by raft to Havana and stay in a 5-Star hotel for $20/night.
I will smoke the best cigars, drink the cheap liquor and cavort with the steaming hotties.
Then I will simply raft back to the mainland and drive home in my F-150.

Stay off the drugs.

Mark,

Werent you guys talking about starting up a forum Fantasy football league? I would be interested

Looks like my comments are being deleted again. What gives guys?

....I think it is QB envy that has fans on Dolphin blogs yelling about how other QB's are over-rated, or over-hyped. So what? Those guys did some good things. They accomplished things at the position that we are begging for. Riddle me this. How in the world can you say that any of those guys are "over-rated" When our own guy is barely out of diapers..Has just dropped his balls. How can we sit here and say Tannehill is going to be this guy this year, and Luck or whoever will fall back to Earth..Simply over-rated? When the evidene is contrary to that?

If we ever get a quarterback that can be put in the same sentences as those other guys. Our fans will stop making these stupid comparisons. There will be no reason, because our guy will be spoke of in the same light as these others we so afraid, or jealous of. If we ever have success at the position. What other qb's do won't matter to us. But we all know that there is a chance that with Tannehill that we will not have this opportunity. My point is that do you think teams with quality quarterback play are whining about other teams qb's being over-rated?? Doubtful.

Keith Jackson was a star before he came here, meaning he was another teams superstar first.

Vincent was drafted by us and was incredible, but you are right... I think he only played for 4 seasons with us. He was incredible though.

Good call on that one Mark.

The Defense was dominant last season til Dans by started giving up 100yd rushers like it was going out of style.

About the same time he started faking the Injury.

Dansby threw at least 4 games last Season. Cards, Colts, First Jets Game, and 1 of the Bills game.

OK, so I know kickers and special team players do not get to the ring. But Reggie Roby was awesome! So was Jim Jensen when he was here as a Phin. The man did everything.

Just giving props to "other greats". :)

Craig,

Just one of my Dashi theories. But your Arch Nemesis might have something to do with it. Mando's IT guy.

NOT TRUE. ONE IS POINTS AND ONE IS YARDAGE!

remember Louis Oliver and Jarvis Williams?

That was fun also. Damn, re-living history again...

Dashi,

I wouldn't be surprised. No clue why it's happening. I'm not using any bad language or being offensive in any way.

Poizen,

If I am not mistaken, Roby and Stoyanovich are on the ring of honor.

REALLY???? My bad Dashi, I thought they were not, Now I feel silly, My bad again.

No I am wrong. Just double checked. They should be though.

Great LB Offerdahl was but I prefer Zach over all. Something little noticed, Zach Thomas was one of the greatest cover LBs in the History of the Game. Same with Troy Vincent over Madison and Surtain. Great blanket CB and probably the best at that position we've ever had.

Craig M....

no doubt what Dashi says is a possibility...same thing was happening to me quite frequently before the off-season break....

I suggest copying your words before you post them...and then just REPOST until the loser gets tired....

is there really any other option...

Dansby threw at least 4 games last Season. Cards, Colts, First Jets Game, and 1 of the Bills game.

LOL .....tell us more stories Dashi

CBS Sports has us ranked 23rd in power rankings, down from 22 last week.
WTF?
How can we have the top WR corps, the top RB corps and the top defense and be ranked 23rd?

ETF, Simple it is the Dolphins, and in recent history What can go wrong WILL go wrong. Until a year or two of that not happening, no one will rank us high besides us "the fans"

Maybe it starts this year!

WE CANT!! DUUUUHHHH!

Who can be so Self-Centered to call themselves "The Blog". None other than the King of the Blog himself.

I have this great little story on how someone's Wife left him for some Dominican Plantain want to hear it... Ah, you already know how that one ends.

Offerdahl does not belong on the Honor Roll at Sun Life Stadium. His career was too short and I'm a 40+ years Dolphin fan. From the HOF to the NFL's Honor Rolls throughout stadiums everywhere--we need to stop this dumb down system where we acknowledge former players just for the sake of acknowledgement. Yes! he was a good player, a very good player--however, Offerdahl was not special and does not belong among our greatest.

CRAP QB??

rdubs, if we get enough people interested, I will play commisioner ... or try to .. unless someone else insists on being commish

ETF, if you're going in late September, let me know, we can hook up, smoke one, drink some rum and lay a train.

Mark,

I thought you said "lay a tran" LOL

Need to get my mind out of the gutter

Kris,

Thanks. Good advice

John Offerdahl?

Just another reminder to look at the overall incompetence that has existed for well over a decade now.

Like another poster said earlier, Offerdahl maybe the best fins mlb of all. The many pro bowls in such a brief span of a very short injury riddled career says it all.

Why its taken sooo...........long for Offerdahl to be inducted into Fins Ring of Honor, is nearly "criminal", and "cupable" in the least.

Do not put Tannehill on your fantasy team!

I'd be interested in a fantasy football league if there was one. Would be a fun to hear the smack talk.

So Nemo,Mark in Toronto, Myself, just need 9 more!! Hey Mark I have no problem with you being commish, but I have dibs on calling my team

The Lobstertubes

Should we make it a pay league?
