Live blog of Dolphins vs. Cowboys here

CANTON, OHIO -- Welcome to the 2013 season. Well, welcome to the preseason.

The Dolphins take on the Dallas Cowboys tonight and everyone is on the edge of their seat waiting to see if Ryan Tannehill and his new toys -- receivers Mike Wallace and Brandon Gibson, tight end Dustin Keller, and running back Lamar Miller -- are on the same page.

Well, Wallace will not play. Neither will Brian Hartline, as you know. And Tannehill is only expected to go a quarter at most and most likely much less than that.

[Update: Philbin told the NFL Network, Tannehill would play 10-15 plays.]

Some things to watch tonight:

Josh Samuda: He's starting at right guard tonight. If he plays well, suddenly the concern about the John Jerry injury and the mixing and matching that has been going on for a week is addressed. Suddenly it won't be so urgent for Jerry to get healthy quickly and be in shape. If he doesn't play well? The search for a RG alternative continues.

The back end receivers: Yes, the Dolphins have a solid plan for their No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 wide receivers. There are jobs open at No. 4 and No. 5. Marvin McNutt is obviously everyone's choice at the moment. I like Chad Bumphis and Jeff Fuller. We'll see if Kenny Stafford, Brian Tyms and Julius Pruitt will also get a chance.

The first round pick -- Dion Jordan: Is he going to get off to a fast start? Is he going to take some time to warm up before we see something exciting? The bottom line, folks, is Jordan needs a lot of work and he's expected to get plenty of that tonight.

The other CB competition: Veterans Dimitri Patterson and Richard Marshall are the presumed candidates fighting for the starting job. We'll see. Personally, the future of the position is either Jamar Taylor or Will Davis, or both. And so I'm watching them. And I know they're going to get a lot of snaps.

By the way, as always, we are live on this blog during a Dolphins event. Except that starting tonight, the way we do it will be different. The Herald is employing a cover-it-live application going forward. I don't know if you'll like it more or less. We'll cross that bridge later. But that's how it will be.

So join me in the live blog by posting on the application.

Matt Moores INT...terrible throw for pick six

Posted by: superPHIN | August 04, 2013 at 11:31 PM

Watch the replay again! Bumphis (or however you spell it) let up on the play eyeballing the LB (#57) baring down on him.

Really Hank

Then explain to me if dallas was so great at moving the football tonight , they could only get in the endzone once on offense the first 3 and half qtrs. of play (1 off of a bonehead play by miller in redzone) not to mention Miami almost getting a TO themselves by sacking the QB.

Are you telling me that was a flawless performance by Dallas???

Miami played sloppy and dallas was so dominant they only won by a 4 pt margin. REALLY HANK???!!!

Yea yea heard that before!! But going against backup players and still sucking that's bad it's not rust, so why Dallas didn't show rust?
Come on man. This team still lacks talent on offense, no OL and no real QB assurance, in other words we don't know if any of these QB can't really carry this team or even win games when it's time for them to make plays, like the top 10 QB in the league. Understand!!! No QB play no playoffs period!

Safe to say Dallas Thomas won't see anymore action at LT after making that Cowboys back up DE look like a Pro Bowler. I'd love to tell everyone about George Selvie out of S.Fla but truth is he was picked up by Cowboys on Jax trash heapan dominated our 3rd RD pick all game loooooooong!

I did watch it Fin4life, yes it was catchable ball but the ball was thrown too high and over the shoulder....for a guy that was wide open it shouldn't have been that bad!!!

Over,

Forget the scoreboard. What did your eyes tell you? We were dominated on every level. The last two quarters were all scrubs and even theirs looked better.

Yes, Dallas won by 4 points and that deficit felt much larger. Miami played awful once again and still have no O-line, LT or RB. Sad.

After the game i jumped off the 17 street bridge, i landed on a dolphin who saw the game and was so embarressed he was going to beach himself, thanks Jeff another great job.

They didn't even play there starting QB, we did, and we looked like the three stooges on an off night.

This team still has no depth on offense. You won't get anywhere if you can't score points.

The beat writers for the PHINS stated it best on their blogs. Horrible offensive line play, they should know their at practice all the time
And hear coaches yelling cursing at the OL and OL players. So they are right on, anyone reads. Sun sentinel Miami Herald?? Or hear Joe Rose the Big O show? Well they are right on!

There is no difference between losing by 1 or losing by 100. The troubling thing is that we never looked like we were in the game right from the start.

Where are those girlie boys telling me that Pouncey won't play center. Ha.... I'll lay my money on it, will you?

As if changing the logo wasn't bad enough... then putrid offense happened.

O great, now the scrubs are greater than ours, o my, what will we do now that our 3rd and 4th strings look like sh%t.YEP alls lost SEASONS OVER.
Wave in the white towel, guys that will probly never see the field after the preseason are making us look bad.

LMAO---u guys really are some sad @ss backward fans, in fact your not even REAL fans just a bunch of crying guys who get all bent out of shape when they lose in preseason and happen to look unimpressive in one showing

superPHIN,

Bumphis wa eyeballing the LB and alligator armed the ball IMO. On the fumble series to start seems to escape everyone the D held but rookie CB W.Davis was flaged for obvious P.I. Like all rookie CB's he needs to learn in the NFL he can't sheild the WR without getting his head on a swivel. I thought given all the new pieces there were a few things to hang your hat on. Seems when people critisize the run D they forget Trusnick was in there at MLB (HE REALLY IS TERRIBLE) and it got so BAD that if you payed attention Wheeler moved over from WLB on the 4th or 5th play and replaced him in there. The low point was how badly V.Martin played Vs. suspect Cowboys interior line and shelby was victimized as well but in his defense he's purely a pass rush specialist and showed it on that bull rush were he tossed the OT into the QB getting his sack.

The injury to Binns may be more of a deficit to the team than I originally anticipated-- Collins also. Hopefully the other nick-nack injuries will be easily overcomeable.
I saw nothing at LT tonight to be optimistic about. I hope this performance is just an anomaly, but I am concerned.
I am not so worried about RT being out of time with Mc Nutt or the Miller fumble, these are just comfort issues. And our starting DL and LBs are a whole different game.
I think however, we have issues at LT and depth at WR at this point. We'll see.

Than they let Bess go JI pucks up a DE instead of replacing Long. Didn't want Winston didn't sign no F/A LT because they wanted to much. I guess RT is no worth protecting? Oh that's right he is not the future franchise QB I get it...just don't understand. JI must go like 5 years ago!

I went to my first Dolphins game in 1968 as a six-year-old with my Dad.

I had season tickets for over a quarter century and have been to at least 50 road games over the years.

Nobody here could ever beat me in a 'Dolphins Trivia' contest. Trust me on that. Nobody.

I'm not saying any of that to brag, only to say the following as someone who has been following this sport and this team for a long, LONG time:

Calm the eff down.

Do you guys know what preseason means? NOTHING.

These are glorified practices and nothing more than pretend games. Their only value in any tangible sense is to see how 10-12 raw players do in game conditions. Attaching any meaning to something more than that is quite simply moronic.

Nobody not fighting for a roster spot last night could give a crap less who won or lost that game. You shouldn't, either, not unless you are nuts.

All you want to do this time of year is avoid injuries and (hopefully) see a few of your rookies flash. The Dolphins hopefully accomplished the first phase of that and certainly saw some of the latter from Dion Jordan.

The way some of you are carrying on about other things as if the world is ending makes me wonder if you just started watching NFL football two weeks ago. Seriously.

Miami looked awful at times? Well, guess what. It's August. EVERY single team in the league looks like a discombobulated ball of stupidity and pratfalls in August.

And as for the "importance" of preseason, here's two things to chew on:

One of the smartest guys to ever coach the game--Marv Levy--was so disdainful of these meaningless practice games that he routinely sat nearly everybody out and was even fined by the NFL for publically calling them out as nonsense.

And then he would lead the Bills to 12-4 seasons and Super Bowl appearances once the games actually counted.

In terms of the Dolphins? Well, here's the preseason results of a Dolphins team you may have heard of, back when they played SIX of these dumbass practice games (you can scroll down if you don't know):

8/05: at Detroit 23-31 L
8/12: Green Bay 13-14 L
8/19: at Cincinnati 35-17 W
8/25: Atlanta 24-10 W
8/31: at Washington 24-27 L
9/10: Minnesota 21-19 W

That 3-3 team was the 1972 Dolphins.

Like I said, calm down. :)

Where are those girlie boys telling me that Pouncey won't play center. Ha.... I'll lay my money on it, will you?

Posted by: Mike | August 05, 2013 at 12:31 AM

Like you were told earlier nobody said that. Mike played a RG and DE in College. His pulling ability makes him our best Guard as well as the Center, that is a fact! He pulls on plays getting around the Tackle sometimes cleaning up and don't know how much Football you watch or get but Center's don't usually do that. If he played either Guard spot he's a perennial Pro Bowler there as well. Neither here nor there given he's our best OL and mans the Middle but you were told you were late to that discussion this afternoon and decided to respond by calling people names, so drop it already.

Mis-tackling was pretty much everyone on that first series Fin4life...not to mention the rest of the night...it wasn't just trusnik Tanner and randle were running over tonight

and moores decision making tonight proved time and time again that he is truly just a backup QB

Hey dumbass, no one said preseason matters or the play of the scrubs matters.

Jonathan Martin matters. Awful all last year, all offseason, and awful tonight.

tj turner | August 05, 2013 at 12:39 AM

Hey tj,

Been a few! You know I'll take you on in a trivia competition going forward from 76 till present but back to 68 need to look t up myself! I thought there were a few things to hang an early hat on liked the play of Jonas Grey early but on one of the goal line situations were he took a delayed hand off he needed to put his head down and get to the 2 he stopped at about the 6 and danced a little letting the Dallas D close but he'll learn and I liked what I saw from him. On D thought we would overmatch the Dallas OL more especially inside but our guys were out however depth is an issue because neither V.Martin nor Randall looked very good. Was watching the CB's and outside the P.I. call in the endzone I felt Davis did all right but needs to learn to get his head around and finally now that I've seen Jordan on the field I would give him every chance to unseat Misi at OLB in this 4/3 scheme.

Ray--

We could have a conversation about that (and I agree Martin is a huge concern) but here's a tip for you:

If you want to have an ADULT conversation you don't start out by addressing someone as "hey dumbass."

That's what a 14-year-old barely past the bedwetting stage would do.

I can assure you I'm anything but a dumbass. The jury is still out in that regard with you as far as I'm concerned.

Would you care to hit the reset button and engage another Dolphins fan as an adult?

Posted by: Ray Finkle | August 05, 2013 at 12:46 AM

With all due respect what game were you watching Finkle? Martin didn't play Vs. Ware but more than held his own while in the game outside of stunt Dallas ran with both the OLB and DE on one play were he needed to take one and whiffed but outside of that tell me what he did wrong? The problem was rookie Dallas Thomas who came in mid-1st Qrt. and made Selvie look all world making depth an issue tonight because Jerry closed 2011 at LT and Garner has played as well meaning so far so good!

Probably the most concerning observation for me tonight is that, after all our offseason efforts, tonight we did not play quick.
I know it was a scrub fest, but I expect this to be our mantra. The Cowboys were the quicker team tonight.

superPHIN | August 05, 2013 at 12:43 AM

I was disappointed in the Tackling as well, I bet Koyle keys and cleans it up by our 4th Pre-Season game this Yr. (usually 3rd) not overly worried about that side of the ball although depth is an issue! I want to see Kaddu get more reps with the regs moving forward before giving it to Trusnik anymore while developing Jenkins but again trust Koyle.

fin4life, nice to see you as well!

Also good to see you have perspective with this preseason nonsense. Like any RATIONAL fan.

Yes, the OL concerns are real. Like many, I'd feel better about it if Jake Long was still there manning LT but that also comes with the huge caveat regarding his health---and from what I've been seeing and reading it remains an issue with him in St. Louis, with Long being held out of a LOT of practices.

So we'll see on that one I guess. The team rolled the dice (slightly) by not overpaying---they did NOT lowball Long despite what some think---but it was still a gamble. And an important one.

If Long gets healthy and performs for the Rams at a high level while Martin sinks in Miami, then obviously a mistake.

If Long can't perform because of injuries and Martin merely plods through an unremarkable season and both teams are seeking upgrades next year, it's a wash.

If Long just gives out physically and Martin grows into the position, then Miami did the right thing both on the field and with the cap.

So we'll just have to wait to find out. Glad at least one other fan here gets how that works rather than running around like Chicken Little.

Dion Jordan was fun to watch. I see why they traded up.

This caught my attention as well and your right on with that observation!

Good night all!

tj turner | August 05, 2013 at 01:06 AM

Was going to go but your posts make picking this practice appart objectively more fun to stick around for a few.

I follow the Training Camps aroun the League on NFL Net. they featured the Rams Friday and found it interesting they had a player wearing #60 in at LT in live contact. When they were shown running drills Long came on the field. Not a great early endorsement and they guaranteed 16 Mil. which makes him a Ram regardless for the next 2 Yrs. minimum.

I'll be honest that I'm kinda pissed at Long.

From what I read the Miami offer was close or equal to what the Rams put on the table. And I certainly never saw ANYTHING even remotely suggesting the Dolphins "lowballed" Jake.

I could certainly be wrong but I keep winding up at this point of viewing Long as kind of a petulant brat that negotiated as if he deserved extra compensation and "cuddling" from the Dolphins.

No question he WOULD have received all that had he been the same player he was a few years ago but he imply wasn't.

Part of me loves the Dolphins doing the prudent, fiscally responsible thing in not caving in to a guy like Long that THEY cannot count on.

The other part has his fingers crossed BIG TIME that it wasn't a huge mistake.

Thankfully, we get to watch it all play out on TV and won't be fired over it!

I have no problem with not paying the ransom for Long. He is no longer a premium commodity; I am just concerned about our LT situation. I don't want to have our RB not being able to get into his route all year.

tj,

I believe the team wanted more insulation in the form of his guaranteed portion being pro-rated over his starts. The Rams gave him only 5 Mil. to sign with a base of 3.5 for 2013. As I'm sure you know the bonus is spread over the life of the deal which is a 4 Yr. contract making him a very friendly 4.75 CAP number this Yr. The problem lies in "IF" Long get hurt or break own ALA Tony Boselli which killed the Texans when they signed him is the guarantee of the 16 Mil.

With a poultry 4.75 CAP number in 2013 the Rams can't move past Long in 2014 without taking an 11.25 Mil DEAD MONEY CAP hit. In fact with a CAP number of 4 Mil in 2014 plus 1.25 of his original bonus figurin into 014 tey still couldn't let him go without a still very considrable 7 Mil in DEAD CAP money. Here is were I believe we BALKED given Ireland remembers all to well dealing with the 11 Mil. we took in DEAD CAP money over Grove in 2010.

On a positive note, I thought our young showed much promise. Shelby, although he had problems setting the edge, showed very good pressure.
Davis lost on the pick play, but played solid the rest of the game.
Robinson looks like the kind of tackling machine MLBs are made out of. Remember Zack--about his size.
Francis played strong, as well as Jenkins.
And I don't have to comment on Jordan.
I think the rotation will reflect these and others performances.

Well said fin4life. How much to do my taxes for me?

Ok well first game done and I am glad it's over!!! I know first game!!!! Our O line is terrible right now. Not that it won't get better but right now terrible!!! No pass protection AT ALL!!! I don't know if it's just me but watching that game it just looked like we were young , very inexperienced!!! It just looked real bad!! Tannehill not throwing good at all!!! Passes were behind the RECIEVERS not good accuracy AT ALL!!!!! Dallas didn't play any starters on defense I really don't want to hear after every game that "we have to look at film and correct things" again this year!!! And I have to say and it's just my opinion that I just don't like our offensive CORDINATOR He is calling plays where our QB's are rolling out to the left and throwing with their right!!! It just doesn't look right!! And Moore on a 14 yrd loss when we r in the red zone???? Come on man really? Throw the damn ball away!!!! I don't know !!! But it Might and I said MIGHT be another long season!!! But lets give it some time and cross our fingers!!!
