Concerns about Lance Louis, Jonathan Martin

Ryan Tannehill is an optimistic guy. He thinks everything is going to work out with his running backs, his wide receivers, his tight ends, and his offensive line.

That's a good attitude to have because a football season is a roller coaster ride and players rise and fall, so keeping a bright outlook is good. But right now the offensive line is at a low point rather than a high point so the starting quarterback seems to be stretching credibility when he says the guys charged with protecting him are doing fine.

"I think they’re doing a great job, like I said there’s a couple guys banged up," Tannehill said. "There shifting around, a couple new faces bumping in while John’s (Jerry) out, moving Mike (Pouncey) over to guard a little bit, put (Josh) Samuda in at guard as well. They’ve done a good job at handling adversity, handling the change and just preparing for whatever is going to happen, you never know what’s going to happen."

Well, unless the line gets its act together what's going to happen is that Tannehill is going to get hit this year. A lot.

To wit:

On Wednesday, the offensive line added a new twist to the guard search with Nate Garner getting first-team snaps at right guard.

Suddenly, the experiment with Josh Samuda at guard (he's also worked at center) was pushed to a back burner. And the experiment of moving Mike Pouncey from center to guard (which I dislike) was delayed. And the experiment of moving Richie Incognito from left guard to right guard was similarly delayed.

The interesting thing in all this?

The Dolphins signed Lance Louis this offseason to compete with John Jerry for the starting job. The man is in his fifth season. He has satarted 28 career games including 24 the past two years.

So why hasn't he been at least an option to replace the injured Jerry?

The problem isn't that he wasn't the first option. The problem is the Dolphins have gone through four other options -- Incognito, Pouncey, Samuda and now Garner -- and Louis still hasn't budged from the second unit.

I know the thought might be he's still getting back from his 2012 knee surgery. Well, then how is it he's on second team? How is it he's taking all his reps and hasn't seemed limited physically in any way?

The Dolphins have moved four guys from different positions, including center and tackle to right guard but the right guard signed to be the backup to John Jerry hasn't been able to step in and fill that role.

Curious.

And, by the way, it's not good for Louis if he's not one of the options because that shows limited value to the team. The Dolphins only spent $100,000 in guaranteed money on Louis this offseason so he has to show strong and become a starting option when injuries arise because he'll be very easy to cut at the end of this month otherwise.

So there's that.

And then this:

The questioin throughout training camp has been whether Olivier Vernon has suddenly blossomed to the point he was often beating left tackle Jonathan Martin for sacks. Or ... was Martin simply struggling?

Well, during Wednesday's practice, rookie Dion Jordan got a shot at matching up against Martin. And he had two sacks.

That's great news for Jordan as it was previously for Vernon. But that's a poor reflection on Martin, the team's starting LT.

If a second-year player and a rookie are looking exceedingly good against him in training camp, how's he going to survive the regular season?

Tannehill seems optimistic about all this. We'll see if he can remain that way.

Martin plays left tackle

Martin sucks end of story, hes too fat and soft, its like going against the Pillsbury Dough boy, just tickle his belly when he bull rush him and he'll collapse on the floor.

Left tackle Mando

Well the plus side is there is still over a month for Martin to get his act together. We'll see an improvment if the coaches can start correcting his technique to cover his weaknesses.

Like I said before, Jerry is still on the team for a reason. They've released many other players, not him. Some of you will continue to say 'he doesn't fit their system', because that is what the silly media has told you.

Philbin and Co. have told you something else. Actions speak louder than words.

Jerry is a rare breed, a beast, and if he isn't the worlds best pulling guard, that doesn't mean he isn't very valuable in other ways.

Dion Jordan was playing special teams and 2nd string to start out at practices when he was coming back from injury. Let Lance Louis work his way up.

It just seems so wrong to question Jeff Ireland's personnel decisions.

Personally I'll look at Jordan and Vernon as the glass half full instead of the Martin glass half empty right now. Lets see what happens Sunday.

"Well, unless the line gets its act together what's going to happen is that Tannehill is going to get hit this year. A lot."

Look,,,lol,, am I the only one that realizes that when you have two injured guards and are moving players out of their normal positions (experimenting every day) that the line is going to struggle. I'm not understanding why this doesn't get mentioned by some reporters when they are worrying about the o-line. Louis is getting healthy and is a damn good guard. But Jerry will be back soon as well.

The only position I'm worried about right now is LT. Martin has to start winning more of these battles, can't win em all but he needs to pick it up

I've been saying this for a while now....if the line isn't right, good lukc running the ball and good luck getting the ball to the receivers.

Others want to dispute this and say you can get by with just about anyone at LT. I sure hope I'm wrong but I see this whole season going off the rails if we don't get that OL figured out.

If he is healthy enough to play #2, then why isn't he good enough to play #1. A player is only as good as they can play. If he is damaged goods, how good he used to be is irrelevant.

Way to complete validate my point on the pevious blog Armando...

The Dolphins are nuts if they cut Louis. The guys not fully healthy yet. Everyone can see that, apparently except Armando. Injuries will happen and Louis is a good guy to have on the team, even if he's not starting. His time will come.

"I know the thought might be he's still getting back from his 2012 knee surgery. Well, then how is it he's on second team? How is it he's taking all his reps and hasn't seemed limited physically in any way?"?

This would've been a great question for the press conference yesterday.

I suspect it has to do with the fact that they have tons of film on Louis and have very little film on any of the other guys at RG. They need to see what they have so when injuries occur in season, during a game, they can make a more smooth transition and use the guy they feel most comfortable with at the injured players position.

They also seem to be working him back slow against lesser talent on the d-line from what I read. Kheeston Randall is probably not going to blow your knee apart quite as bad as a Solai or C Wake. Another beat writer suggested he wasn't going against the bigs but I wasn't there so I obviously can't say for sure. But yeah, great question for the next press conference.

Once again it is interesting that Armando is stirring crap for no reason. One of the Heralds reporters Barry Jackson said "Nate Garner, Lance Louis and Josh Samuda all shared time with the first team at right guard. It was Louis’ first appearance with the first team since returning from last November’s knee injury, and he appeared rusty."
So who was watching who at this practice?
The offensive line coach said yesterday that they are giving all of these guys looks at different positions so if they have to move then it will not be totally new to them. He also said that he would look to have the best five in place by the 4th preseason game. Now am I concerned about Martin, yes. However lets give it time and stop worrying about the sky is falling right now. There is a reason that Armando is a "sports writer" and not a football coach. Let the coaches do their job.

Good thing there's 5 weeks until the season starts. That's a lifetime in the NFL so hopefully they can get the oline figured out by then. Wouldn't it be nice to go into the season set on o-line from the opening day of camp? Hasn't happened since Parcells came and brought his minions.

"Trew" the roof? Jesus Christ. Did you even pass second grade English?

It's "through," as in "the gaping canyon that runs through 2 watt's head."

u r such a moron that u don't c dat's slang u moron.
lol

If Lance Louis is not fully healthy, he wouldn't be practicing. Joe Philbin has said it a million times he doesn't practice players that aren't ready to go.

A true fan would know that.

thenne, if dey r doing a good job then y were u crying and trowing a hixxy fit at practice last nite.?
lol

I got another question for you....

I know its early AUG (the 1st to be exact)....

but do the FINS EVER do anything right (according to you)....EVER????

Craig, if Martin doesn't work out, you have permission to give me lots of "I told you so's", because I was one who said Martin would be fine. But if Jordan's looking like Ware against him, then I'm second-guessing myself now BIG TIME!!! Or on the bright side Jordan's just a beast.

Does everyone else just scroll right by 2watts posts like I do? It's great because you can see his name easy while scrolling down and it makes it simple to ignore. Thanks for that 2 Watt!

apperantly...I only have ONE question....

ecause my 1st post got DELETED already.....lol...

but you have a guy who has the word @ss in his sign in name post all the time....

and you (Armando) are questioningTanne's credibility...lol....

pot MEET kettle....

Kris, you been on the rag lately. Get over yourself and talk football. Geez.

By the way, now that Jordan seems to be stepping up, how are the Dolphins going to find a way to get him and Vernon and Wake on the field all at the same time?

Anybody?

Hey Giants stink,

Have you ever heard of easing a player back into action? Every team in the NFL does it. Take a look around the NFL at guys coming back from injuries. Very few of them are cleared for contact right off the bat. Dion Jordan was one, right here in Miami. There are TONS around the league, including RGIII and Revis.

None of these guys ar thrust into action right away.

A 'real' fan would know that.

Sad...we shoulda got Fat Albert

Same here. The guy has never written so much as one compelling or interesting thing here.

I am not exaggerating.

good question kris

mando ever writing a positive post ever????

when tannehill struggled the first two days of camp all we get are tannehill sucks posts

tannehill who is the most important factor in the dolphins being good this eyar has been fantastic this past week

no posts on that just on hats the centre wears when hes out drinking on his birthday and posts about second team guards

seriously man glad im not the only one who sees this

Kris,

YG was trying to tell us all on here the other day that the only two guys that have a problem with him are Mark in Toronto and myself. One of the funniest posts I've read on here.

Talk about lack of credibility....

Craig:

No. 1, I didn't address you by name so forgive me if you are very sensitive.

No. 2, as a season ticket holder who live in Miami, I have witness three practices already. Lance Louis is not being brought along slowly. He's been full contact at least five practices and a scrimmage. He's been second team the entire time. He hasn't been held back. I know because I watch a lot of Bears football and liked his signing so I paid attention to him when I visited camp.

DC,

You're not alone in thinking Martin would be fine going forward. He may yet still be. But boy, all the signs are there of a guy who's going to struggle. We heard all about the hard work he did in the off-season and how he added muscle and how LT is his natural position but when a rookie and second year player are having their way with him it doesn't set things up very well. We can only hope he improves.

Cant the canadiens find a canadien blog?

Scourt, good question. Like an all-out blitz package. But remember, Ellerbe and Wheeler were brought in because they have better blitzing abilities than the last LBs we had. So not sure they would need to use all 3 at the same time.

Mark...

I'm glad @ least one person saw the post....

and yeah....this negativity just because (from Armando) isn't working for me....

I'm all for being objective....but there is no balance here...not in the least....

2 watt = PLAYED OUT

2 watt sells slushys on key biscane

ANYONE WHO CAN'T TELL TANNEHILL IS PROGRESSING IS JUST PLUM DUMB!

Kris, the reporters seem to be under the impression that they have to point out the problems with the team for the fans. They feel their job is to point out the shortcomings and get to the bottom of whatever is going on so the fans are more informed. I've heard Omar say it and it's obvious from Armando's writing style that he does the same. It's their philosophy apparently and that's fine but I completely disagree.

The way to do it is to point out the good as well. Not in a one line snippet on twitter. In a real story or blog entry. Just like they do with all of the negative stories. And isn't that what the fans want? Don't we want to hear about good battles going on opr a nice story about a player every once in awhile? YESSSSS! It would be awesome to hear something good for a change. Where's the story about Tannehill's progression? No ints in 4 practices and a scrimmage? What about some of the younger guys who are stepping up? How about that beast Odrick?! Haven't heard a peep about him except on twitter and he's been a monster.

Pointing out the teams shortcomings isn't a reporters only job imo because I'm a fan. I want some good with the bad.

Looks like out resident moron is here.....always lurking in the shadows, like the low-life he is.

2 watt has a more objective and correct opinion than the blind homers. I enjoy his humor.

Tannehill will have less then 2 seconds to throw the ball

thanx.
lol

Craig I said the same exact thing in my post at 10:59. The guy is coming off a major surgery and some ignorant fans want him in their full time against our best guys 5 WEEKS BEFORE THE SEASON STARTS when we already know what kind of player he is and are still figuring the other guys out.

I feel like there are some people new to football in here today. Logic and reason do not exist in here today.

an all out blitz on every passing down?

The way I see this, you rush 4 but two of those guys are inside guys.

If your inside guys are Odrick and Wake and have Vernon and Jordan outside, you are asking your best DE to rush from a position he's not used to and is not big enough to succeed in.

If you're moving Jordan or Vernon inside, they also are kinda lean for the task.

Also Scourt, just thought of something else, if we have 3 stud pass-rushers, hypothetically (Wake, Jordan and Vernon), then will Ellerbe be used for his blitzing prowess? That's a lot of pressure and not a lot of defenders if the offense gets by that first wave of attack. And if he's not used for that, then why'd we bring him here? Interested to see how Croyle uses all these weapons (guess it's a good problem to have, too many pass-rushers vs. too few).

Craig, what you can't see is me backtracking in my position fearfully. I might even have to attend Services before Week 1 to say a prayer for Tannehill.

If TanneHenne has the "sophomore slump" they'll be 1-15...again.

Have to start proofreading, too many repeated words in my posts. ha

By the way, now that Jordan seems to be stepping up, how are the Dolphins going to find a way to get him and Vernon and Wake on the field all at the same time?

Anybody?

Posted by: Scourt | August 01, 2013 at 11:11 AM

You should watch some of Oregon's games from last season to see what Jordan is capable of. I saw him lineup at both DE spots. Sometimes he blitzed a d sometimes he dropped back in both man and zone coverages.

I even saw a play where he lined up at DE and moved outside to cover the WR and the CB dropped back as a safety. The QB was so confused he got called for a delay of game.

What's the feeling from everyone on Wallace? Are they just being cautious? I get that they don't talk about injuries but not sure about all this cloak and dagger stuff.

It'll be interesting to see if he plays Sunday. Doubt it.

Scourt....

funny....you always want to "tak football" when you and your many names are called out...and the BLOG has had it up to their respective eyeballs with your crap....

I got a better idea....talk football ALL THE TIME....and I woudn't be forced to shine a SPOT-LIGHT and connect the dots....

get your BOY's under controll...then we can ALL "talk football....

i mean really....I have s

sammy, when u r the worst at 3 + outs. u can't regress doofus.
lol

Mark in Toronto, I agree 100 percent. When Tannehill had struggles it was a big deal that he was comitting turnovers or missing Wallace deep. Now, he has no turnovers in 6 practices or something and it doesn't get mentioned.

Same with Jordan not looking good the other day, then his 2 sacks have to be because Martin is bad.

I mean I'm all for not being a homer, but mix in the good with the bad at least.

Also, everyone check out Barry Jackson's sports buzz. My Dolphins report read of choice these days.

It's his act. He's been doing it for a while. He's a regular poster who for some reason finds it enjoyable to post under a different name and act like a different person with the slang and all. He posts the most ridiculously negative things and says the opposite of what is going on to either A. help the Herald drum up hits or B. help himself to get attention.

That's it in a nutshell.

Craig M....

he/they are BUSTO no doubt...

This is NOT the time to let the pressure off...but ratherb keep your foot on YG and his band of TROLLS necks so that .....

1) They conform quit insulting and debate topics in a manner that is suitable for most adult conversation....

or...

2) leave...

either works for me....

Good posters in here today. Time to start ignoring the nonsense on the side.

Interesting stuff, Mando. Can you publish Louis's contract. Is he making 2-3 million this year or is he a minimum salary guy.

If he's minimum, I don't have a good feeling he's going to be around.

Meanwhile, on Martin, you asked the question that's been in my head since camp opened. Is he that bad or is Vernon that good? Now that Jordan is also whipping him, it shows Martin might be in for a long season unless he gets his stuff together.
