Philbin thinks Thomas played well

I left this afternoon's Joe Philbin press conference scratching my head. (No, not because I'm infested with lice). I was curious because in discussing how players performed against Tampa Bay for the first time since studying the tape, the coach said he liked the way the running backs played.

"I think they played well," Philbin said of Lamar Miller and Daniel Thomas. "I thought both of them. Lamar had one of his better days in pass protection. His awareness was excellent. I thought Daniel Thomas had a good game as well. Lamar had a couple of cleaner run opportunities but I thought they both played well."

What?

Daniel Thomas played well? Really?

Thomas, vying with Miller for the starting running back job, basically delivered an unimpressive performance that should have knocked him from the competition. He rushed for 3 yards on seven carries. He caught two passes for 12 yards. Two of his seven carries lost yardage, including a 3 yard loss on first-and-goal.

He didn't break a tackle. He didn't turn a bad play into a positive play. He didn't seem to do anything that suggested the Dolphins running back job is in good hands.

And so that's playing well?

Now, I understand the Dolphins also grade pass protection and picking the right hole or running lane and all that. But this is a results-oriented business, the NFL. And 3 yards on seven carries does not sound like good results to me.

And yet, after a game that strongly suggests Miller is Miami's starting running back and Thomas needs to get better to be the backup, that's not how Philbin is thinking.

Asked if he's settled on a starting running back yet, the coach also did not give the job to Miller.

"Not necessarily," he answered.

Now, I'm not a dumb guy. (OK, maybe I'm not a smart guy but give me that I'm not dumb. Work with me). So maybe, just maybe, the coach gave this answer for some psychological reason or unknown agenda.

Maybe Philbin wants to put the idea out there that Thomas played well and is still competing for the job to motivate Miller and keep him from feeling comfortable. Or maybe the Dolphins wouldn't mind getting rid of Thomas and want to talk him up to improve his value.

But this would be so unPhilbinlike that it sounds improbable to me. The coach may not say much, but he rarely blows smoke.

So I'm stumped.

The coach, meanwhile, had other areas about Saturday's so-called dress-rehearsal that he was happy about:

"I thought our guys played hard. I thought we had a good opening possession," he said. "Obviously, we want to score a touchdown. We got ourselves off the field. We missed a tackle on the opening possession that could have gotten us off the field earlier, but we made a stop. We had a negative yardage play on third down that forced them to punt. We know we had special teams give-aways in the first quarter but I thought we came out ready to play. Our play speed was good overall."

Yea but he knows where to get a mean pan con bistec!

silver,
Let me get this straight:

The grafitti is bearable...
The loud music and honking hrns are bearable...
The heat and humidity are bearable...
The litter is bearable...
The crime is bearable...
The 5 gallon paint buckets filled with mis-matched tools are bearable...

The fans comments in Mando's blog make it unbearable. Now we know why al of our draft picks leave when thier rookie contract is up.

The D looks very good against the run once again this season, and the pass D looks much improved with the addition of Grimes and Ellerbe, etc..

....Fields as always is a weapon, and Sturgis has positively upgraded the kicking game on kick-offs and seems very capable on FG's....

....Wallace and Grimes and Hartline are a formidable, capable WR trio...

....so I am very encouraged...BUT...I feel we need to trade/sign one way or another TWO key positions..

...1) a veteran QB with proven NFL experience (and I don't pretend to know whom this would be)...AND...

and 2) a proven TE , either in trade or off the waiver wire....

....To make roster/cap space cut Egnew and Matt Moore...keep Devlin as #3, and Clay as the multi-facetted hybrid, and Sims for his future potential...

......if Keller makes a successful comeback...all the better...would then leave us with TWO capable TE's in the future...and wouldn't that be a novel idea !!!!...

...and if T-hill can keep improving and wins...fantastic...and if he needs more time to develope his skills, or goes down to injury, the veteran QB is there to take up the baton....

...just my take on it..(and I know it will never happen, but there's always hope)

GO PHINS!!!

WE NEED A TE!!!!

These issues need to be debated some more.

You guys go ahead and debate for a few more hours and I'll check in about 11pm.

And your point was what? That we have no talent.....yet neither do teams like the Raiders or the Chargers and they sell out every Sunday. Their local media is filled with intelligent writers who are objective and insightful. Their stories are well thought out and their fan base are well informed. Here all we know is how bad everything is all the time .... and you think that has no effect on the fan base?

Armando es un comemi-rda.

No matter how bad the Dolphins record is this year, Jeff Ireland should be retained. Nothing like continuity and consistency in the NFL.

OMG Oscar...he eats WHAT!!!!

Philbin thinks Thomas played well??

ARE U FRIGGIN KIDDING ME!!!

OUR HC HAS LOST IT!!! LMFAO!!!!!!

0.4 yds/carry is good??? Is Philbin working for the Jets??

And Cellar just proves my point ...... you see Philbin was just supporting a player because he knew where Mando was going (in a negative direction) and Mando spins it another way and a bunch of people by in ...............and of course this doesn't influence the fan base.

speaks like a politician, good ole Philbin does...

Yes, Irescum is the model of consistency. Leads the league in draft busts EVERY year and loses EVERY year. Consistency is his middle name.

Yah...agreed CF.....I don't see the man crush the Coaches have some of these guys........
...D Thomas.....Egnew.....Clay....

...I don't get it.....wtf ????????

silver you are supporting the blog by posting here and by just coming to the site so much and refreshing the page, that is how you know so much about this blog. So you are just as big of a supporter here than the other dufus queenies.

There isn't much you get. Come back when you grow up and get some life experience.

Probably, Armando has never tasted Classic Cuban Cuisine, the one very influenced by French chefs imported by aristocratic Cuban families after the end of Spain's rule. Popular versions of this cuisine exist still, namely, by Master Cook Teacher(same as James Beard in the US, not Chefs!, Teachers) Nitza Villapol. I just made some picadillo(ground beef) in n a tomato sauce with, olives, raisins and cubed fried potatoes strictly by her recipe. Delicious!

Um no .........am I blogging right now yes.......do I fall for Mando's BS NO. Do you really think that everyone is slamming the Phins right now just because? No it's this article, all of his articles ...... it's always the same old crap and then everyone repeats it like it's their own idea.

STOP IT !!!!! You're making me hungry..!!!

I mean do you really think Philbin is going to bash one of his players to Mando? ....... Do you think any coach would? Wait Jimmy Johnson would......but that didn't work out for the Phins too well (62-7) last time I checked. Again no insight by Mando, just BS and everyone keeps eating it

I've never seen a worse RB than D Thomas. I've watched him closely every year and have never seen him break ONE SINGLE TACKLE! not to mention he's ALWAYS INJURED!

Philbin is a MORON!

Three weeks ago, Martin should have been dismembered and sent to Buffalo according to this blog. And Armando.

John Jerry should have been cut on the spot, Long was all world in St. Louis and Bush was going to carry Detroit to the Super Bowl on his back. It appears that some of those judgments were a little premature.

Maybe we should trust Philbin's judgement a little, you think??

A worse running back.......how about Ryan Matthews (San Diego wants to kill the guy) or Darren McFadden (He averages about 4 games a year) or whoever the Jets have (Enough said) or the Cowboys RB (Wait they don't run the ball, because they can't) or you have a blast from the past - John Avery

Philbin is a MORON!

Well, he's perfect fot the Fins with football morons at GM and owner already. HAHA

and there's a Mando follower for you ........ once again no insight

I keep on reading that Devlin will be cut and Philbin has said he might go with only 2 QBs. Hmm...

Note the lack of proper grammer by the Mando follower

Philbin is 8-16. Sparano was better. You trust a loser not me.

TGH it's called Rosetta Stone ....... they have version that teaches you English

Ron Son ...... Philbin's been here 1 year.....Sporano was here 4 years ........... do the math otherwise you kill your own arguement

Ron Son......preseason doesn't count ..... just trying to help you out bro

Did any of you observe how GB's offense fell off track without Philbin last year?

Armando is the best Dolphin writer on the planet. Great insight and timely articles. The other writers copy his articles 2 days later. He also has great connections within the Dolphin organization. And he has the best blog.

And there's another one ...... at least he has a sense of humor ...... insight, timely, best, copy.......now that's hilarious

No. Actually it was the Dolphin offense that stunk.

Trolls don't address the issues. They just give you preseason records to make their point.

What was Shula's preseason record?

Damn TGH that Rosetta Stone works fast......the spelling is already improved. Speaking of offense what would you suggest - the Wildcat?

Hey, that wasnt all Philbins fault. He wanted Matt Flynn as his QB but Ross was too cheap to sign him. Same with Vonta Leach. Ross is a cheap SOB. Thats just part of the reason the team stinks. Its not all on Phibin.

I think Philbin is blowing smoke......maybe for one of the reasons mentioned, or maybe just to keep Thomas' confidence up.....seriously, why would he ding a RB he might need?--would that be productive?--these comments happen all the time, rarely is a coach completely honest about players in this context/setting......he aint dumb, he saw the game and I'm sure he knows Miller is/will be the starter--but nothing wrong with keeping both guys motivated--like it or not, unless we trade him, Miami needs Thomas for depth if nothing else.

I think Philbin is blowing smoke......

Only an idiot would believe anything any coach or GM says in public. Some people never learn this, like Armando.

and I saw the game and agree Thomas wasnt impressive, but to be fair, there were several runs where he had no shot, tackled/hit immediately, a few times in the backfield......didnt have much of a chance to break tackles in several runs that I can think of--not impressive, agree, but go back and look at his runs.....he had zip to work with--and I'm still not sure why Armando continues to obsess about this.....our running game wont be great but could be average at least, or a little better or worse--plus, doesnt the Oline share in (much) of the blame?

Talking a player down only risks your chance of trading them for something in return. You have to sell your players at all times. I learned this when I was 7. Some of you still haven't quite figured it out.

If I owned the team I'd fire Philbin for even insinuating that the RB's played well. Clearly, they did not.

Thats especially true for the Dolphin FO who consistently alienate the fans and media.

Does the Herald have a blog for adults? I don't want to get arrested interacting wtih these minors.

If seeing a huge hole (for once) and choosing instead to run straight into the back of a lineman blocking five feet to the left for 3 yards when he could've had at least 15 is "playing well" for Thomas, then I have to question Philbin's grasp of reality.

Seriously, am I the only one who saw this???

Finfans are just starting to realize that Philbin is a poor coach.

Found this from a reporter with intelligence and experience:

The whole article just reads better ...... its called objectivity and analysis

silver,

None of these posters are remotely serious or believe a thing they say. They are just bored individuals trying to entertain themselves by getting fools to respond to them.

There are lots of fools here that will never figure it out.

Go back and read armando's posts on Jonathan Martin from 3 weeks ago. Nuff said.

Nope, I saw it too. Seems to be more than a few on this blog that didn't though

ETF....."go-to guy"......not sure any team thats 7-9 really has a go-to guy......one of the primary reasons we were 7-9

thanks for responding, Sco.....you fool

benz, sorry I left some skid marks up there. I'll wash it out better next time so you don't stain your rod again.
