« The day's doings at Dolphins camp | Main | Fast start, sure, but Dolphins need more than that »

The lesser known DE is having a big camp

You know Cameron Wake. He's one of the NFL's top 100 players as selected by his peers.

You know Dion Jordan. He was the player the Dolphins boldly moved up in the draft to take at No. 3 overall and has already been likened to Jason Taylor and Aldon Smith.

You know Olivier Vernon. Much has been written about his fine start to this training camp and his potential to be a starter this season.

You should know Derrick Shelby.

He's having a fine camp. He had a sack in the scrimmage. He had a sack in the preseason-opener against Dallas. Coaches love him.

“Derrick is a very sound football player," coach Joe Philbin said. "He is going to do it exactly the way [assistants] Kacy Rodgers, Charlie Bullen and Kevin Coyle want it done. I love him because he keeps his shoulder pads square. He gives effort. He is in the right spots when he is supposed to be. He knows what gap he has. He’s not jumping around things. He plays through people. He’s doing a nice job."

Shelby made the team last season as a rookie that took well to coaching and rarely made mistakes. This camp, he's trying to make the jump to actually making plays.

And so far, so good.

"I see more production out of Derrick, stating the other night," defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle said. " He’s always a guy that you can count on the be in the right place, he’s very dependable, yet we saw that playmaking ability the other night and we’ve seen it throughout training camp.  He’s been difficult to block, he’s gotten more pressure on the quarterback, he’s been the guy that we feel very pleased with at this point in camp and he’s made a lot of progress."

As the Dolphins added talent at defensive end in the draft -- obviously with Jordan -- the idea of keeping Shelby seemed like something of a luxury. But Shelby so far has earned his spot. He is so far entrenched on the second team defense.

And because he's 280 pounds, he seems more able to hold the point on early run downs aside from his growing pass rush skills.

In other words, Shelby is finding a good niche on the team. And his prospects of staying on the team seem very, very good.

[Injury update: FB Jorvorskie Lane, who missed practice Wednesday with an unkown injury, is expected to play against the Jaguars Friday. The Dolphins are still finalizing decisions on playing Lamar Miller (ankle) and Mike Wallace (groin). Jared Odrick (groin), Brian Hartline (calf) and Olivier Vernon (groin), all of whom missed the preseason-opener, are expected to play. Dannell Ellerbe, who missed the preseason opener, is expected to play. Randy Starks (knee) and John Jerry (knee) are definitely out.]

[Update: Miller, who has been nursing the tender ankle the last two practices, is expected to play barring a last minute complication ... CB Jamar Taylor (hernia recovery) is not expected to play.]

DC lets chill with the comparison to Brady. Hes one of the GOAT of all time.

DC,

Too funny! Hope you're right.

Kris,

Big night for your boy Mallett tonight. By all accounts he's going to get lots of playing time in the New England game tonight. Good chance to see if the kids got the goods.

I just hope he doesn't start, 2-5 and look jittery.

With all due respect, If you can switch your allegiance that easily, you never were a true Dolphins fan. Have they been disgustingly, pathetically horrible for the last decade plus, definitely. But if you're as old as I am, then you'll remember they were the exact opposite the prior decade to that. Actually, up until the early 2000's I think, they were the winningest team in the NFL (even though they haven't won a SB in a long time). Things are cyclical. But a true fan has faith. I see things changing back. A winning team is not that far off. If I were you, I wouldn't jump off the train just when it's starting to get chugging again. The next few years are going to be quite joyous for the remaining Dolphins fans in the world.

DC, please spare me rants about who I root for, Im sensing you cant tell sarcasm in a post, possibly working for the government in DC have you brain washed?

Truth, it's about faith brother. Sure, bold claims need to be backed up by bold actions. But good teams have better fans. Teams around me (Redskins, Ravens) have great fans. Fanatics. They support their teams unconditionally.

F*CK BRADY! F*CK MANNING! There's 53 players I give 2 sh*ts about, and they wear Aqua and Orange on gameday. I save the superlatives for fantasy and after the Season. But in between the lines, from August to February, no one gets their due respect. EXCEPT THE WORLD FAMOUS MIAMI DOLPHINS!!!

It's GameDay, LET'S ROLL!!

Antagonizing each other in this blog is more fun than the team or the games themselves.

I guess I have to listen to the game on a radio stream tonight. NFL network relays on Sunday I think 8 in the morning. DVR is set.

Andy, that was a great post. Give everyone some much needed perspective.

firstrowsports.eu

I'm watching this biatch live .. then maybe some p0rn.

Poizen, Im sure theres some website you can watch the game, it can be a lil choppy at times but you can make out the players and the play that happen, beats radio IMO

DC, I'm with you. We've been in the desert a while but Moses (Philbin) will lead us to the promised land.

Tannehill will be manna from heaven!!!

BIBLICAL I TELL YOU!

Truth, I stream from the website I mentioned above. I have my laptop connected to my tv ... works super well with cable internet.

Peyton Manning is done by the way! Finished, a fried turkey! He's a shell of himself now and last year after going 2-4 for 13 yards in his first preseason game last night. The sophomore slump is also in full effect for Russell Wilson and last season was a fluke because in his first preseason game he was an abysmal 2-6 for 23 yards. The Seahawks may try to reacquire Matt Flynn from Oakland. Andy Dalton will lose his starting job after leading the Bengals to back to back playoffs (3-7 37 yards) and John Skelton is the going to be a STAR because after all he went 4-5 72 yards and a TD. Last but not least Brandon Weeden is on his way to the Super Bowl and will win league MVP after all he was 10-13 for 112 yards and TD with a QB rating of 127.7.

The panic button is on in Miami tonight. This game is HUGE. It's the biggest way to determine Ryan Tannehill's future in preseason game #2 vs the Jacksonville Jaguars. This is the precursor for Tannehill's future in the NFL.

I now hope you realize how silly this all is. Do you want to play well in the preseason? Absolutely. Does it mean anything if you play great or terrible? Like come on guys. This blog is full of either non-sense from trolls which is for a 5 year old or negativity when you don't have a clue.

Posted by: AndyNJ | August 09, 2013 at 08:03 AM

Best post of the day so far! That's precisely how these trolls around here want us to believe they think.

go finsssssssssssss

perfect post gang, the casual fans in here are beyond dumb. preseason means nothing at all.

Lobstertube.com

Nobody is talking about the key matchup tonight!

Dion Jordan vs. Luke Joeckle!!

I hope they go head to head, the number 2 pick versus the number 3 pick.

Ok, maybe I am overstating this, but anyone else curious?

rdubs, I like what I see from the kid, apparently his weakness is he doesnt know how to set the edge, but his athleticsim is off the charts. I guess for his first year he'll only play on 3rd down.

BTW I come to work Mon-Fri and spend a good hour on this blog before I touch work, I always wonder if others in the office "goof" around before they do work

I could care less about Joeckel but this will be my first time seeing the new Vernon and Odrick and the rookie Jordan. I'm excited about that. I fully expect this front 7 to be an absolute terror this year and for the Dolphins to be successful, they are as important as Tannehill because they will need to produce turnovers that will hopefully make life easier for our immature offense.

Truth, no worries, you are in the good company of casual workers here. No need to feel guilty. Kick back, stay a while. Just have the alt+tab ready ...

Mark the alt tab, yes indeed! As you probably know there always that one guy who peep at what your doing behind your back. LOL

Thanks Mark and Truth, I just emailed that to my house, will try and log on and watch there.

Thanks again

Mark,

There isnt a small part of you that wouldnt like to see see Jordan school the number 2 pick overall, the alleged sure fire pro bowler!!

The "lesser known" defensive end??? LOL, nice try. The SECOND they moved up to take him cameron wake became an afterthot.

Toronto, Woodshed

Thanks fellas. It's just insane the way people take such a small sample size and decide he was awful (Hoge) or he isn't the answer (Dennis Green, bloggers).

I've been preaching for days now don't judge Tannehill by the preseason and don't compare him to his peers. Compare him to himself. Is he better in 2013 then he was in 2012. That's how you guage a player if their moving in the right direction or not.

Truth, yeah, there's always that one guy. the same guy we used to punk out on the playground then hide behind the teacher's dress.

rdubs, i want to see Jordan school EVERYBODY. Wreak havoc on the NFL - be the next Jevon Kearse or Aldon Smith ...and if there's one left tackle I want to see him school more than the others, it's that turncoat Jake Long!

Poizen, anytime my friend. That site is fantastic for me ... watch all kinds of sports there ... save big bucks on specialty sports channels and PPV events.

Great post Andy. Still, hoping to see some good things from the team tonight.

Andy I'm with you 100%. I said as mch yesterday. I frankly could care less if Russel Wilson and Luck continue to excel or if Kaep wears godawful shoes and looks like a complete douche at the ESPYs. I just want Tannehill to keep getting better.

Ryan got the #1 pick overall and the awesome #s but Flacco has the ring....

Mark, does that site for the game work on an Ipad?

According to Dennis Green, Mike Wallace is no Reggie Bush...

No, he def isn't. Wallace has more rec TDs than Bush has rushing TDs in his career despite being younger.

I swear people get paid to say stupid things??

rdubs, not sure. I don't know much about Apple. I'm a finance guy so obviously I only know PCs unless it comes to playing music on a device ...

Reggie needs to be a contestant on "Dancing With The Stars" since thats what he likes to do.

Toronto,

Im with you. I think this front 4 is going to be a huge key to the success of our season expecially early on when our schedule is so tough. The Browns have a decent Oline but the key to beating Weeden as any QB but particularly Weeden is pressure. Weeden was dead last in the NFL when under pressure last in completion percentage. Luck doesn't have a great Oline. The Saints Oline is missing Bushrod so it will be interesting to see how that plays out and Falcons starting RT was Clabo who is now a Dolphin and his replacement is now done for the year. The Ravens lost Matt Birk and although they jelled late last year that Oline was very suspect early on. McKinnie always a hit or miss pass protector. We may just catch these teams at the right time with our front 4 looking so dangerous! If we want to come out of the first 5 games on the plus side in the win column the front 4 is where it needs to come from because we have a tough start.

The thing I love most is the complimentary pieces we have along the front. We've got speed rushers (Wake, Vernon, D Jordan), effort guys (Wake, Shelby), bull rushers (Starks, Odrick), run stuffers (Soliai, Starks, Odrick) and versatility where guys can play multiple positions (Dion Jordan, Starks, Odrick, Misi.

They key to all of this is the Wild Card, Dion Jordan. I dumped all over this pick when it was made and before it was made said he was over hyped well Im hoping he proves me wrong every game and Im optimistic he will. I loved seeing how he was used vs Dallas. Move him around and allow his athleticism to shine.

I think we can all agree, we still need to see the offense move the ball a little better, especially on 3rd and shorts and red zone. We have played 1 game already and the Jags suck so we should move the ball easily. I am not saying this means anything, but if we look inept this game and get stuffed by the Jags, it isnt a good sign

..Who cares if Merril Hodge, or Dennis Green have a different opinion then perhaps you or I. It is certainly their right to say what they want about Tannehill, and our team. The quote that they are irrelevant is funny too. This usually comes from a guy behind a keyboard on a blog site. Not a national television show viewed by millions. Sure. Who is Mr. Irrelevant?

Let these guys do the talking. What does it matter? That they could be right? Does it scare some that maybe just maybe these guys OPINIONS may turn out to be right? Look. Feel good about the team. Punch jet fans in the babymakers, get drunk and be somebody tonight if you have to. But until this team starts proving it on the field...Why would anyone(especially a relevant national television head) give this team the benefit of the doubt? That is for us..the fans.

There is no Football on lobstertube.com, man.

Anyone know how long the starters are expecting to go tonight?

oscar, thats for after the game when your wife goes to sleep. LOL

Posted by: AndyNJ | August 09, 2013 at 10:10 AM

I think you hit on a key point with Jordan. I think it is necessary to move Jordan all around the field. Aside from JT, I can't think of any guys built like Jordan that had long careers in the NFL. Speed rushers who get a knee or ankle injury lose value because of how it affects their speed.

It's better to keep Jordan as a 3rd down pass rush specialist and move him around in coverage. The worse scenario would be to have him as a starter who ends up breaking an ankle or tearing knee ligaments under a pile of offensive lineman on a physical running team.

Now I am curious and at work, what is lobstertube.com

rdubs, you might want to wait after you get out of work before you type that URL in. LOL

well it is Friday night, I could for a little tug-of-war solitaire version

Toronto,

We are on the same page with everything today.

I didn't even get the comparisons of Mike Wallace is no Reggie Bush. One is a WR and one is RB. Apples to oranges comparison.

This is the comparison I would make would you rather have Mike Wallace and Lamar Miller or Bess and Bush?

Wallace is a big play waiting to happen who averages over 1000 yards and 8 TDs per in his career. Lamar Miller is unproven but minus that fumble (who cares who's fault it was) looked like a big play waiting to happen as well. I realistically can see 1100-1200 yards 6-8 TDs and a 4.4 average or better.

Bess on the other hand is a crafty slot WR who was forced to start last year and gets the most out of his physical limitations. He has just 12 total TDs in 5 seasons and has a career high of 820 yards and 5 TDs that TD total doesn't even match Wallace rookie season of 6. Bush on the other hand is a very good player and in my opinion was never used properly. However an outside threat like Wallace and the potential of Lamar Miller trumps Bess and Bush by alot IMO.

Darryl very true at 10:12, good post.

I'm with you, rdubs... lobstertube.com. I'm intrigued.

Sounds like the kaizer Sauze of web sites ...

Who is lobstertube???

Andy NJ...

you guys are too funny....I mean seriously.....

If Tanne looked sharp I would say it....and you would be all like..."ggod post Kris"...I agree Kris"....

But since I (we) made REALISTIC observations on the SAMPLE SIZE (regardless of how small) we saw...then we are chicken littles who believe the "sky is falling"....

C'mon man....

When Tanne hits the recieves in the hads...or the #s...and they are drops...then we will PRAISE Tanne...and bang the recievers....

but that is NOT the case....so to be critical of Tanne to this point s not unfair...it is merely REALISTIC...

maybe tonight he improves...maybe he stays the same...but to NOT be able to critisize LACK-LUSTER performance is UN-AMERICAN....

I have HIGHLIGHTED the positives...

MILLER

JORDAN

Shelby (Armando)

guys who we NEED to show up every game day....

Tanne was NOT one of those positives....

thats just the way it was....

Daryl....

EXCELLENT PERSPECTIVE @ 10:12....

Woodshed,

I actually want to see Jordan used like Von Miller. That's how I will use him in Madden 25 lol. All jokes aside. I believe he has the athleticism to play as a
4-3 OLB and mix and match his assignments from blitzing from that spot to using him on the edge in a 4-3 over and allow him to either drop in coverage on the TE or blitz. On 3rd downs or obvious pass downs or even sub packages let him play with his hand in the dirt etc.

When you are as athletic as he is with his size why limit him to just a hand in the dirt pass rusher.

rdubs, just make sure to zip back up before falling asleep. That's not a mistake I will make twice!

Andy, Green even went further to say Mike Walalce is no Jake Long ... wtf is that supposed to mean?? After the Bears rant now this - he should be tested for post concussion syndrome or some other brain trauma...

I woul've liked to have Reggie around this year but not as a feature back. I wanted him to run about 10 times a game, wreak havoc in the passing game but I sense that wouldn't have gone well with him. he seems intent in proiving himself to be a hammer RB for some reason.

Does everyone know that we are allowed to type the name of adult sites but we aren't allowed to say the word ,,,,the "P" word that is? Oscar posted an adult site name, rdubs reposted asking what it was. I checked and then tried to warn rdubs not to go there if he's at work, I used the "P" word to describe the site and both times my post never made it through screening. Too funny. Don't say the word but go ahead and promote the sites. This is the most a@# backwards blog that ever existed. lol

Kris,

Sorry bro but you just don't get it. There is no fair way to judge Tannehill off 5 passes. And for you to think that I see there's no point in arguing or debating. But for blog sake I will entertain you just once on this topic and then I'm done.

So is the sky falling for the rest of the QBs who did nothing in a nothing game, last night? I don't get how anyone can say a QB was terrible after 5 passes. As far as I was concerned and facts are facts, he actually just got into a rhythm and completed 2 short balls for the first down and was then pulled. He was 2-5 at that point with one of those incompletions being a spike on a botched screen play where everyone had their assignments mixed up. We are 1 full month away from the season so judge him after Cleveland and tell me how he looks.

Craig M....

Its possible that Wilson may have a SLUMP....

I think of ALL the QBs that weredrafted and started last year...he is most likely the one to suffer a set back...

why?

because of his height....the one thing you can't teach....

DCs have had a year to put film on him...and will likely play Seattle a bit differently....perhaps stay in their lanes...and force him to make plays from the pocket with 6'4 DL and 6'6 OL IN FRONT of him...as opposed to the side....

but Wilson has PROVEN himself (albiet for one year)...and has EARNED the benifit of the doubt....he will get EVERY oppertunity to succeed...Wilson is SMART...and a natural leader...he will adjust...it may just take a few games....

Kris,

You didn't address my earlier posts to you. Russell Wilson, 2-6 for 23 yards. Looked jittery and inaccurate. Should Tavares Jackson be warming up in the bullpen?

Please tell me how it's different? Because Wilson had a good season last year? And that relevant how? Completely different supporting casts.

If Mallett struggles tonight are you off the bandwagon?

This is what I talked to you about before...inconsistencies and double-standards.

Congrats on the new addition on the way, btw.....

so Phins, is Lobstertube a themed adult website. Or just a site trying to have a clever name. Is lobster some sexual reference I am not aware of. Like Dirty Sanchez or a Rusty Trombone LOL

Phins78, replace the o with a 0 and all is well

P0RN!!!!!!!

Kris,

I agree with all your comments about Wilson. Where we might disagree is this idea that Wilson has 'it'. I believe he does....not sure about you.

Where I struggle with this stuff is, I don't even know what that means any more. If he has 'it' is he immune to struggles? I don't think he is. He's likely to elevate those around him.

Andy NJ....

I don't want to argue wih you...but I didn't know that having a differng opinion for yours meant that there was no room for debate....what else is there to this place if we don't have "room" for debate....

don't feel the need to appease me...not even this once....

clearly you just want to post what you WANT...when you WANT...and nobody should be able to challenge your opinion otherwise...

I got it...

Good day....

If I can say something on Kris' behalf. I don't think he's saying Tannehill is not improved or will be a bust. I think he's just saying that we didn't see him play well last week and would just like to see him play well.

I think it's fair.

Phins78 by the P word do you mean p u s s y?? And Rdubs I have no clue I came across it reading a blog and was like WTH is that? Went there and its been my go to site ever since. LMAO.
