The post-mortem from preseason opening loss

After Sunday night's 24-20 loss to the Cowboys, Dolphins coach Joe Philbin did his postgame press conference out on the field, by the end zone. As a group of reporters surrounded him for his four-minute talk, a nearby fan yelled over at the top of his lungs:

"Breaking news," the fan yelled, "the Dolphins still suck."

I wouldn't go that far nor would I make assumptions on a season or even a preaseason based on this preseason opener against the Dallas Cowboys.

But on this night the Dolphins definitely didn't present much of a counter-argument against that heckler.

They didn't just lose this one 24-20, but lost it ugly. They played poorly, they played sloopy, and they got beat. Not a good recipe for turning the thing around in time to start the season fast.

"I told the team I thought we would play better," coach Joe Philbin said. "That's obviously not the way you want to start any football game, I don't care if it's preseason, Game 1, the Super Bowl or any game in between."

The start was ugly. Lamar Miller fumbled on the first offensive play.

The Cowboys recovered inside the Dolphins 10 yard line and scored.

The galling thing?

The defense that started for Dallas was missing every defensive starter in the lineup save one. Yes, coach Jason Garrett sat practically everyone and still won.

"I told our team we've talked a lot about taking the ball away. We've talked a lot about ball security. We spent a lot of practice time but it didn't show up on the field today. We have to go back to work and get that corrected. That's the reason we lost the game and that's what's going to turn this program around more than anything else is us doing a much, much better job in that category."

Yes, it was a bad start for Miller, who is trying to replace Reggie Bush, but he recovered a little bit. He finished with two carries for 21 yards.

"I had to make up for it and look forward to the next play," Miller said. "I was trying to move the chains and help the football team."

Miller added the team, "can only get better."

Obviously. The Dolphins lost the turnover margin, 2-0. One of those was a 75-yard interception return TD by reserve linebacker Devonte Holloman, who picked off Matt Moore. The pick goes on Moore's stat sheet, but the problem was that rookie receiver Chad Bumphis sat down in the zone when Moore was expecting him to run through.

"It was a bad read on my part," Bumphis said. "That one's on me. But I'm going to learn from that and that miscommunication won't happen again."

Bumphis wasn't bad otherwise. He caught five passes for 85 yards to lead the team. Michael Egnew had four catches for 52 yards but had a drop. Keenan Davis had three catches for 48 yards and a TD.

"Keenan Davis made a couple of plays," Philbin said. "Bumphis has caught the ball in practice ... The kid gets open and he catches the ball."

Moore finished the game with 19 completions on 29 attempts for 238 yards. He played most of the second quarter but was forced back in the game in the fourth quarter when third-stringer Pat Devlin "got nicked," according to Philbin.

Dolphins05 rmattsacked jwrI'm sure Moore loved the idea of coming back in the game. He was sacked once (which you see courtesy a photo by Joe Rimkus) and hit hard on multiple occasions as the second-team line -- particularly reserve left tackle Dallas Thomas -- seemed to struggle. Frankly, I'm wondering if Thomas has the quickness to play left tackle. If he does, he didn't show it tonight.

It looked like Devlin took a shot that had him a little glassy-eyed in the locker room afterward.

Speaking of quarterbacks, starter Ryan Tannehill completed two of five passes for 1 yards. His 47.9 QB rating was the lowest of the Miami QBs. His inability to connect on a couple of simple slant throws to WRs showed either his lack or work with those receivers, or a twinge of inaccuracy or both.

Afterward, Tannehill conceded the Dolphins looked ugly.

"It wasn't our cleanest game, wasn't our best game," he said. "I'm glad we can get that one out of the way early. We have four more preseason games before we get into the regular season. So hopefully this was our sloppy game."

The leading rusher on the night for Miami was Jonas Gray. He rushed for 41 yards on seven carries. Gray missed all of last season as he rehabilitated a knee injury from his Notre Dame days.

"This was a reassurance that my knee is 100 percent," he said.

oscar, devlin better be ready, live ammo in 34,
he will b in by 1/2 x.
lol

So quick to criticize yet we had no hartline,Wallace, wake, odrick, starks soliai, grimes. Should i continue? Yes sloppy performance but everyone are saying we are garbage, yet the stats don't look so bad when you compare against Dallas. I I'm glad most of you aren't coaches that's for sure!!!!

there are still a couple of areas of concern and that was before this game, so i don't understand all the fuss when the game showed what we already knew needed correcting. Lets see if the coaches can fix these before either the seasons starts, or early enough for it not to damage our season!!

I'm happy to see what they can do, because i also believe we have better players on our roster than last year!!

Win the turn over margin win the game simple as that.

This game was about finding back-up players who can play and getting out of the game injury free. Nothing more nothing less.

Sporano trying to win a preseason game a few years ago left jake long in a preseason game against dallas and jake got hurt and he hasn't been the same player since that night. Jake looked like a future hall of fame player until he was hurt in a meaningless preseason game. I wouldn't play Wallace hartline wake or grimes at all and barely play pouncey and clabo. For star players the preseason means stay healthy, get in shape, gel with teammates.

aaaaaah, here b the spin drs. with the excuse fest.
lol

I'd be super impressed with this Dolphins team if they can get to 8 wins this year. That will be a huge step forward in progression for this team and will bode well for the future.

the future = 4 decades & etc.
lol

No Vacancy.Sorry guys, the Miami Dolphins have reserved all of the remaining rooms starting Jan 1 2014.

They'll be lucky to be 7 and 9...
The human turnstile Martin wouldn't make a pop-warner team...
Great job by the GM Ireland for 5 years of mediocrity..

Welcome to Fantasy Island.

Puuuuuuuuuuuuke.

I like the color of the uniforms, enough of that cartoonish version this is 2013, time for a new change. I didnt like how inaacurate Tannehill was, the OL looked horrible, besides the fumble Lamar looked fast as heck.

BTW I think we might have a stud in DJ, cant wait to see how how he does when line up on the other side of Wake. He needs to see the field plenty this presesaon to get adjusted to NFL speed

Lamar Miller showed what true speed looked like on a paticular run.

HERE IS A DOLPHIN FACT.

DOLPHINS ARE 0 and 4 in Hall of Fame games but had a winning season every time.

Its just a pre season game. But...... When your 1s get pushed around by another teams 2s....?

It is the first pre-season game... If we look like this for the 3rd and 4th, then I might get worried. The one thing I disagree on was Bumphis. He had a good game, HOWEVER, the most glaring thing for me wa the terrible INT returned for a TD. Bumphis was faster than anyone on that D, after the INT he jogged following the play. He needed to put the jets on and make a tackle. That aggrivated me.

homers, read again.
lol

I like that kid Davis, he looked like he was Vincent Jackson size and also looked very fast with solid hands, where did this kid come from?

Left tackle situation is a disaster. Fins need to bring someone else in. They could have had McKinnie if they had just offered a little more. Stupid.

Seems to me after last night game some homers are drinking there Kool-Aid and not enjoying it because it's missing a main ingredient..Sugar.

Sunny Dee, Mckinnie is Fat AF and outta shape, matter of fact the team he plays for put him on the PUP list for failing thr condition test

Some things I saw that bothered me, lack of focus and concentration to start the game, seems to be endemic with this coaching staff, don't know what they are failing to do prior to games to get the players motivated and awake, but they need to look in the mirror and figure it out!

Martin getting bullrushed by a guy he outweighs by 60 pounds, who was the scout that saw anything in this guy? If you ask me, I'd put Richie Incognito at LT before I'd put JM there. He is a total liability and I see a short season for 17 if JM is starting LT in September, in fact if JM plays LT this year, we may have to go QB shopping every other week due to injuries.

All those clamoring for Moore to be the QB, on 3rd down and short on one of the most critical plays of the game what does he do? He whiffs the center snap and has to fall on the fumble, sorry Moore fans, he is NOT ready for prime-time and never will be. Not saying 17 is the answer, but 8 isn't even a part of the question. We don't have a solution at QB, this is still an experiment.

This offense is built on band-aids and held together with adhesive tape and the coaching staff on O does not give me any confidence that they A. know what the problems are, and B. have the skill set required to repair it.

I like Keenan too last night. That was a dart from Devlin the he held on in the end zone. I don't know where he came from.

The same exact can be said about the LT position. J-mart not looking like the answer, Dallas Thomas not even the question.

Pretty funny to see the comments on the uniforms since the shade of aqua the team now wears is EXACTLY what they wore back in the glory years in the 70s.

If you went to games back then (and I did) then you remember they were just as bright--especially under the lights.

I think a lot of folks don't know that because they either weren't around back then or have only seen it in non high-definition that did not show how vibrant they really were.

You're free to hate it, of course. But if you do then you also hate the color jerseys the team wore when they won Super Bowls. It's the same.

All his doom and Tannehill threw 7 times...and was in the game for what? 2 series? The starters at WR didn't play and the O-line sucks and the Fins lost ground on the Pats.....all this after 2 weeks of practice and one glorified scrimmage against another team....reading these comments are like rubber-necking a car accident...I don't mean to do it but I just can't help it. Then I feel guilty for reading this mess....and yet I feel compelled to comment....oh well.

Don't know what some of you saw lastnight, but, none of our wr's looked fast imo.

Did they at times get open? Yes. Did they look fast? No. Unless of course I had the only tv in the nation that plays live action in slow motion.

Tannehill did make his slow recievers look fast by "throwing behind" them lastnight.

Is this what you guys mean by saying our receivers looked fast?

Bottom Line:
Dolphin players, coaches, management, ownership & phans were all UNPREPARED for last night's sausage fest.

More often than not, the first couple series for a qb sets the tone on how the rest of his day will go. Usually when they come out the gates sputtering, either it will be an awful game or he'll have HUGE ebb and flows the entire game.

It's nevr a great sign.

not panicking yet.. but one thing is for sure.. the new uni's are HORRIBLE! we look like an arena league team in those powder puffs

NONE of the Dallas starting D played last night.

That really makes you wonder about the quality of the scrimmage that we had.
Sure - our offense looks great - against our D.

Sure - our defense looks great - against our O.

4 bill. ota's
9 trill. tc practices and they still looked like chit.
lol

Dolphin players, coaches, management, ownership & phans were all UNPREPARED for last night's sausage fest.

This sounds like "pete" and "repete" of the last past decade. You hit the nail right on the head.

Also, its "pete" and "re-pete" in what the "overly optimistic homers" post after games like this.

Where have we heard: "It's only preseason before"? Do not the homers remember their own yearly posts, only to see a failing season once again?

"Breaking news," the fan yelled, "the Dolphins still suck."
lol

I'd been preparing us for last night for 4 months; that is what exposing fraud is all about - preparing my audience for reality.

TH17 is a journey man!!!.. plain and simple... and this guy Dallas Thomas sucks big time , he got devoured over an over for 2nd and 3rd stringers... it was really ugly... Dolphins looked like an undisciplined and sloppy team.

Yes. There is a situation brewing here about the QBs but it is a good situation. Both Tannehill and Devlin are very good QBs as Pat is showing every time he takes the field only they have different styles. You can say that RT is a Favre and Devlin is a Griese. The solution? A tough one to come up with. Interchange them according to the opponent? Maybe, but difficult to implement for many reasons. Who knows? In the end, you have to use the Player that best fits your scheme.

oscar, wit no ol, devlin w/ his quickest release gives the phinz the only chance at a w.
the 3 + out machine will kill u'r d.
lol

I agree, the powder puff blue uni's were terrible. I expect to see lots more of these uni's in the city of Miami's "gay day parade". They are just perfect for this event......

Tannehill had accuracy issues...again.
OL is still a problem.
Martin is scary at LT.
Daniel Thomas was.. Daniel Thomas. He just has trouble reading blocks and seeing the hole (if there is one!)
Dallas Thomas is not a LT - this was determined when he as in college. He is a G. Why do we play him at T??
Gray and Gillislee both looked OK.
L. Miller will be starting RB.
D. Jodan actually did pretty well. I am starting to see the potential others see. But he did get pushed around a bit and needs to get stronger. Still don't think he was worth 3rd overall pick.

Only thing from the new uniform ensemble were pleated skirts and pom-poms....

I really don't care how fat or out of shape McKinnie is, he is still an upgrade over Martin and Thomas. He was also dominant during last year's Super Bowl run.

db,they played like a girls team.
lol

missing

They had new uniforms last night? Never noticed, I'm not into fashion.

Cowboys sucked & the Fins SUCKED worse!!! NO offensive line, NO stopping the run, & a rally GIRLIE logo!!! Just a complete EMBARRASMENT all night long!!!

david is right. The "new" uniforms are exactly the same color the team wore back in the 1970's. I was there, too.

You guys have no idea what you are talking about because it's obvious you weren't around then!

ETF IS LORD OF MORONS.

WHO SAID DALLAS STARTING D DIDN'T PLAY?

AND DALLAS D COORDINATOR BRAGGING SAYING ITS HIS BEST FRONT 7 EVER.

DALLAS STARTING OFFENSE DIDNT PLAY.

STOP TELLING LIES!!!

...Wow. I didn't see that coming. I never "live blog" on game days just because the knee jerk reactions are too much for me. I don't even know why I waste my time reading the comments. Kind of narcissistic on my part as I know it is all garbage. This said. Wow is the over-reaction exactly what I thought it would be today.

...What did people expect?? As poorly as some of the units played, individuals within those units. Take away the turnovers. And the game was played pretty even. Now I get that we don't get to do that. I get that we made mistakes, and these are part of the game. They capitalized.

But....The first unit offensive line did have some moments..Run blocking. And the defense(at least the guys that we know are going to make it) Look fast. Really fast. And how about the play of Dion Jordan?? He looked every part of a top 5 pick last night..All be it against their scrubs..He looked good. The other thing that stood out to me was the size of our recievers...They are massive. I really had no idea. This is a good thing.

So freak out. Cut your hair like Maggie did on the Newsroom. The sky is falling today. We are doomed. We know this because we played poorly in a preseason game. The first one. No way we can get better???????

David, is this true???

Ireland playing hardball with the LT position this offseason looks to have backfired big time. Passing on Long and Albert.

If Ireland has a single brain cell left, he's on the phone with KC's gm right now(Branden Albert). But if KC watched lastnight's game, Albert's trade value to Miami has just reached two 1st rd picks.

Tell you, Cowboys looked pretty tight and decisive. Might make a claim for a good place this year.

Miami has NO (NONE) running game. They had the chance to sign at the very least a premier fullback in vonta leach, but........lmao, yeah, anyway.
The Dolphins have nothing but an empty joke for a running game. How stupid does one have to be to actually think for even a second that miller or....(whoever else we have) is an NFL calibur RB.
Good luck..........

Yeah, but there wasn't a 6 lane wide powder puff blue stripe protruding right down the center of the helmets.
We would have doe better having going back to replica early 70's uni's....

The Dolphins be-shamed the HOF by putting Moore back in against C'boys 4th string and still losing.

DD,

Every year we seem to look awful and somehow manage to keep the final score close. Seems we absolutely mastered this.

The final score hardly ever tells the true tale of how awful this team played. The pattern continues.

Konandy, I for one disagree with you on this one, I believe this will be strong point for the phins this season seeing how Tennehill will be injured by the 4th game of the year with Martin being his blindside protection.
A quick Question here, Any QB in camp happen to be left handed??
