The post-mortem from preseason opening loss

After Sunday night's 24-20 loss to the Cowboys, Dolphins coach Joe Philbin did his postgame press conference out on the field, by the end zone. As a group of reporters surrounded him for his four-minute talk, a nearby fan yelled over at the top of his lungs:

"Breaking news," the fan yelled, "the Dolphins still suck."

I wouldn't go that far nor would I make assumptions on a season or even a preaseason based on this preseason opener against the Dallas Cowboys.

But on this night the Dolphins definitely didn't present much of a counter-argument against that heckler.

They didn't just lose this one 24-20, but lost it ugly. They played poorly, they played sloopy, and they got beat. Not a good recipe for turning the thing around in time to start the season fast.

"I told the team I thought we would play better," coach Joe Philbin said. "That's obviously not the way you want to start any football game, I don't care if it's preseason, Game 1, the Super Bowl or any game in between."

The start was ugly. Lamar Miller fumbled on the first offensive play.

The Cowboys recovered inside the Dolphins 10 yard line and scored.

The galling thing?

The defense that started for Dallas was missing every defensive starter in the lineup save one. Yes, coach Jason Garrett sat practically everyone and still won.

"I told our team we've talked a lot about taking the ball away. We've talked a lot about ball security. We spent a lot of practice time but it didn't show up on the field today. We have to go back to work and get that corrected. That's the reason we lost the game and that's what's going to turn this program around more than anything else is us doing a much, much better job in that category."

Yes, it was a bad start for Miller, who is trying to replace Reggie Bush, but he recovered a little bit. He finished with two carries for 21 yards.

"I had to make up for it and look forward to the next play," Miller said. "I was trying to move the chains and help the football team."

Miller added the team, "can only get better."

Obviously. The Dolphins lost the turnover margin, 2-0. One of those was a 75-yard interception return TD by reserve linebacker Devonte Holloman, who picked off Matt Moore. The pick goes on Moore's stat sheet, but the problem was that rookie receiver Chad Bumphis sat down in the zone when Moore was expecting him to run through.

"It was a bad read on my part," Bumphis said. "That one's on me. But I'm going to learn from that and that miscommunication won't happen again."

Bumphis wasn't bad otherwise. He caught five passes for 85 yards to lead the team. Michael Egnew had four catches for 52 yards but had a drop. Keenan Davis had three catches for 48 yards and a TD.

"Keenan Davis made a couple of plays," Philbin said. "Bumphis has caught the ball in practice ... The kid gets open and he catches the ball."

Moore finished the game with 19 completions on 29 attempts for 238 yards. He played most of the second quarter but was forced back in the game in the fourth quarter when third-stringer Pat Devlin "got nicked," according to Philbin.

Dolphins05 rmattsacked jwrI'm sure Moore loved the idea of coming back in the game. He was sacked once (which you see courtesy a photo by Joe Rimkus) and hit hard on multiple occasions as the second-team line -- particularly reserve left tackle Dallas Thomas -- seemed to struggle. Frankly, I'm wondering if Thomas has the quickness to play left tackle. If he does, he didn't show it tonight.

It looked like Devlin took a shot that had him a little glassy-eyed in the locker room afterward.

Speaking of quarterbacks, starter Ryan Tannehill completed two of five passes for 1 yards. His 47.9 QB rating was the lowest of the Miami QBs. His inability to connect on a couple of simple slant throws to WRs showed either his lack or work with those receivers, or a twinge of inaccuracy or both.

Afterward, Tannehill conceded the Dolphins looked ugly.

"It wasn't our cleanest game, wasn't our best game," he said. "I'm glad we can get that one out of the way early. We have four more preseason games before we get into the regular season. So hopefully this was our sloppy game."

The leading rusher on the night for Miami was Jonas Gray. He rushed for 41 yards on seven carries. Gray missed all of last season as he rehabilitated a knee injury from his Notre Dame days.

"This was a reassurance that my knee is 100 percent," he said.

What is clearly seen from this is the players that People love to hate, JMartin the frontrunner now. Lots of hate and bias here. My favorites are Devlin and DJ(as if it was a secret). I blame no Player's for last night and rather the Coaches.

It has been a very slow starting team for many years now. They don't hit stride until game 10, too late.

it wasnt that bad, 14 points were because of stupid mistakes of lamar miller and chad bumphis, fotunately bumphis will not make to the 53

Word around Dolphins headquarters is that Jeff Ireland reported to work determined to turn around the Dolphins personnel woes. To demonstrate his commitment to this purpose, he let the staff know that he would be having lunch delivered today.

Sorry, but, we have over a decade's worth of experience at this. Just like you guys have over a decade's worth of experience with these same old retorts and failing seasonal results.

YG, I would accept your point that you have over a decade's worth of experience...IF...the team has gone about its business exactly the same as it did over the past decade.

Let's be honest with each other (you're an astute fan), do you think the team "tried" to change it's approach with the new HC (and systems he brought), the GM being extremely active during FA, the type of players the GM is drafting and looking for, the offseason program, training camp, etc.? Or are you seeing the same thing (not outcome mind you) that you've seen over the last decade? If you're honest with yourself (and everyone else), you'll agree they've done things differently.

Doesn't mean the outcome will change, but I think it's a bit presumptive to declare the team unchanged from previous teams yet. We have all kinds of new players, all kinds of young players, this is a "feeling out" period. I can accept they didn't look great in their first outing. But why can't you guys accept that it's not how you start, it's how you finish? That's all I'm saying.

Armando you are a joke...half of these comments are jokes.......This team has been together two weeks. Are you kidding me??? Anybody that wants to bash the fins after this game is a douchebag. Armando you've been bashing them for two years now. I wish they would have fired your castro wanna be self when they had the chance a couple of months back. At least the palm beach post has interesting articles and in depth analysis. You are a jet loving basher. Get back on your inner-tube

Phins78 @ 12;21....point taken but I can't help feeling there's something wrong here. Team burnt out from practice? Teaching methods? Lack of focus? I have no idea but when you see a whole team (except for a handful) looking like a H.S. J.V. team, you gotta ask why?

Whatever the hell it is, it needs to get fixed pronto.

It was the hall of fame game.....players go 60%....nobody wants to get hurt. This team is gonna be fine. The worst part of the game was listening to cris Collingsworth riding the cowboys nuts all night.

The sky is not falling everyone, we're in year two of the rebuild.

LMAO! Dude, we are in year SIX of rebuilding! Aside from the mirage of going 11-5 after a 1-15 season, introduction of the wildcat, Pennington, Brady going down, and a perfect storm of luck, we have been rebuilding for YEARS! Sheesh!

or they have no clue how football is played. He gave up exactly ONE pressure and NO sacks. Yeah, horrible.
against scrubs who wil b loading trux in sept.
lol

1 hurry in 8 snaps against guys who will be bagging groceries at your local publix in 2 weeks.

Yes, that is cause for concern. Homers will never get it.

Now THAT'S a name that belongs on this blog! Much appreciated brother.

LMAO, and you are a delusional homer! Let me guess, you've predicted 11-5 or better every year for the last 4 years, right? To what do we owe this pathetic team who I spend hundreds of dollars on every year??? We have been living in the wilderness for YEARS, so until they SHOW IT ON THE FIELD, clueless homers can keep living that pathetic little dream. I love how anyone who criticizes this pathetic team is labeled a Jets fan. Facts are facts and we have SUCKED for nearly 7 years. I want the playoffs as bad as anyone for my Fins, but gimme a break. I owe this team NOTHING and neither does Armando until they PROVE it.

Billy,

How does Brady owing down have ANYTHING to do with us going 11-5. Please explain? Did the rest of the league throw the games because Brady went down? Your point makes ZERO sense.

love my fins......REGARDLESS.....ME AND MY WIFE BOTH HAVE TATOOS....MY SONS NAME IS DANIEL AND MY OTHER SONS NAME IS ZACH

aaaah, jet hater, when is u'r episode of tattoo nightmares coming up.?
lol

BILLY....

SO IM CLUELESS...YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHO I AM OR WHAT I THINK. YEAH I DO LOVE THIS TEAM. I DID GET PISSED OFF LIKE 12 TIMES LAST NIGHT. BUT IT WOULD BE NICE TO LOG ON TO THE HERALD AND SEE SOME ACTUAL REPORTING FOR A CHANGE. ARMANDO DOESNT TELL US ANYTHING HE JUST SAYS THE SAME THINGS OVER AND OVER. THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN AN ENTIRE POST TO HOW WELL OUR ROOKIES PLAYED. JORDAN WAS AWESOME...BUMBPHIS WAS GREAT....SIMS GOT OPEN...ALOT TO BE PROUD OF

WHEN I GET YOUR MOMS FACE TATOOED ON MY SHAFT...LOL

TANNEHILL IS INACCURATE, HE'S A BUST...ENJOY !!!

THATS FUNNY BECAUSE HIS LAST PASS OF THE NIGHT WAS A LASER TO GIBSON FOR A FIRST DOWN ON A SLANT....A RECEIVER HE IS USED TO PLAYING WITH BY THE WAY

Armando may say the same things over n over & you hae a problem with that but, it's the team that sucks major as* year after year & you're ok with that.

IF you want Armando to report something new, tell the phins to start winning. Not losing over n over.

I liked a lot Syms did too. I think there was one pass that went through his hands, but otherwise, I thought he looked like he belonged. Even Egnew caught some balls. We've definitely got issues, but the reason I'm optimistic is because I'm not going to see a team running 40 times, in the power I the entire game, ONLY passing when necessary. I'm sick of that mindset. Tannehill "may" not be the answer, but we'll sure as h*ll find out a lot quicker since he'll be asked to pass the ball a lot more than QBs were in the past.

jet hater, u and u'r wife can have the tat artists on the show change u'r phin tat into a mark sanchez tat just like rex has.
lol

REX DOESNT HAVE THE TATOO HIS WIFE DOES

Laughingstock franchise...

All these posters keep saying jmartin looked terrible...maybe you should learn the difference between jmartin and Thomas. jmartin had a solid 10 snap performance.

looks like we found our #4 wr in chad bumphis...this guy is gonna be really good. reminds me of harry douglas

holy cow..it is a pre-season game!

mike,u said that the past 40 p/s games.
lol

jet hater, ware wasn't even playing and he registered a sax against jm.
lol

2 watt.... your an idiot

SO TANNEHILL COMPLETED A SLANT, THAT MEANS HE'S NOT INACCURATE ? I'M PRETTY SURE CHAD HENNE HAS COMPLETED A FEW SLANTS AS WELL...JAY FIEDLER HIT THE SLANT QUITE OFTEN TOO. TANNEHILL IS INACCURATE, WHEN HE MISSES A RECEIVER ON A SLANT WHEN IT'S 4TH AND 6 WITH 1:40 LEFT AND THE DOLPHINS TRAILING...MAYBE THEN YOU'LL GET IT. HE'S INACCURATE...HE'S A BUST. I WILL LAUGH AT THOSE WHO ARE DISAPPOINTED !!!

how do you register a sax

youre a bust.

Jet Hater,

Yeah, maybe the positive-takes from the game would have been a good addition to this article, but I think Armando just took a step back and decided to write on the overall product as a whole.

Most teams this week is still training camp. The normal 1st game is next week which is usually a stinker for every team.

You can't tell anything until at least 2 or 3 more weeks

Too lazy to go through all 5 pages, but has anyone mentioned the poor play calling?
Miller tears it up 2 straight plays, and they throw it next 2 downs, with Miller out. Sure, It's an pre-season game, but why not give the )-Line a chance to puff out their chest a bit?
Red zone calls also pedestrian.

What I HAVE to question is the Dallas Thomas pick. He appears to have ZERO aggressive tendencies, nor physical talent. Jeff will undoubtedly keep him and Sturgis, rather than admitting he made a mistake.

LAST YEAR, IN THE 4TH QUARTER AGAINST THE BILLS ON THE ROAD, TANNEHILL THREW BEHIND AN OPEN DAVONNE BESS, THE BALL WAS INTERCEPTED BY A BILLS LINEBACKER...GAME OVER. IN OT AGAINST THE JETS, HE OVERTHREW HARTLINE. HARTLINE MANAGED TO MAKE THE CATCH, BUT WAS UNABLE TO KEEP HIS FOOTING. HAD THE BALL BEEN BETTER THROWN, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A TOUCHDOWN, GAME OVER...INSTEAD CARPENTER MISSED HIS FG ATTEMPT A FEW PLAYS LATER AND THE PHINS ENDED UP LOSING. TANNEBUST MISSED A TON OF RECEIVERS IN 2012. INACCURACY, INCONSISTENCY, MEANS YOU AREN'T THE GUY. PAGING DR. TANNEBUST, DR. TANNEBUST ?

hes only played 34 games at quarterback and only 16 nfl games. I think he l;ooks good and has shown improvement last year considering he had no help at all

After this year you can evaluate Tannihill. He have to give him this year to see how he does with talent around him.

JET HATER : INCONSISTENCY WITH HIS SPELLINGS OF YOUR* AND YOU'RE*. YOU AND TANNEHILL ARE BOTH BUSTS. LEARN TO SPELL FUKTARD.

New players, same team

thenne, 7-6 as a sr. at a+m.
thenne, 6-9 as fresh.in the nfl.
thenne is going backwards like a crab.
lol

People will always make excuses as they did for Henne. ie..he didn't have weapons, his o-line stinks.

But, a couple of early posts here rightly point out that Tanne was under pressure. The throw behind mcnutt could have been by design. Had in & out coverage. If it was thrown where it should have been it would he an int.

Mcnutt dropped a catchable ball. Out of 5 passes 2 were caught, 1 should have been caught & 1 could have potentially been thrown inaccurately intentionally.

Let the real games start or at least let him get MORE game action to really get a feel for him.

So I'll talk about the one thing no one seems to want to talk about or cares to talk about...

Dan Carpenter is having an excellent camp and is outplaying Sturgis. So are led to believe that because Carpenter makes more money he will be the one cut? Seems like a mistake to me. Best guys should be on the team and to date it's been Carpenter.

hey fire thank the herald for deleting my last post. 633 mimosa rd del ray. meet me anytime. I work from home. always here

Criticism is in order because it allows the team to improve, but still, it was just a pre-season opener guys! it's too damn early to be jumping wagons, even for a jet fan!!!

The game wasn't such a terrible nightmare as you might think by reading this blog. If we take aside two weird mistakes from the score (Miller's butt-fumble and Bumphis' turnover) we could have won!

Ryan Tannehill was OK (although he didn't play long enough to draw any meaningful conclusions), and roster deepness in WR and RB departments looks encouraging. Which is not to say we don't have pending issues. I expected more from the D (even without Odrick and Starks), and OL play keeps being the main concern.

By the way, Dallas Thomas is not supposed to be an "elite LT", he is supposed to GROW into a solid OG to provide roster deepness and maybe some versatility in a few years.

What about Will Year man at LT. I went to one of the TC practices and he looked pretty solid from what I could tell.. But #70 definitely sucked the big one

So I'll talk about the one thing no one seems to want to talk about or cares to talk about...

An excellent camp does not involved missing 2 fg's & having a xp blocked in 1 practice!

Golly Gee Willikers

Phone auto correct. Supposed to read Yeatman.

lol

Wowza,

Right you, because that doesn't happen to any other kicker. But what is clear is that Carpenter was money last night, while Sturgis has been inconsistent and injured. Clearly outplayed to this point.

so injured & not even competing is considered being outplayed? him being injured has nothing to do with it? lolololol

the way some minds operate is downright scary. WOWZA!

Wowza, submit to his holiness & spare yourself the pain to come. You're wrong..he's right. Now & forever!

Craig, I don't think anyone does not want to talk about it, I think it is a kicker and the least exciting topic. I do think Carpenter will be kept if he is much better than sturgis. The much more money can equate to much better, But if he is not MUCH better he will be done here.

What is clearly seen from this is the players that People love to hate, JMartin the frontrunner now. Lots of hate and bias here. My favorites are Devlin and DJ(as if it was a secret). I blame no Player's for last night and rather the Coaches.

No one hates Martin. Just hate the way he plays LT. Capiche?

I like Tyms the WR looked explosive out there, keep him and Davis.

Truth, keep it in perspective, Types wa playing 3rd team cover guys, I personally think we have to keep Matthews. he looked really good up up until the injury and he is not scared to go over the middle. Would you let Mathews go over either of the guys you mentioned? After one game I can not at thi point.

Who gives a crap about the kicker battle right now. Didn't we just spend nearly two hundred million dollars to score tds?

Then why the hell should anyone care about fistpumps? Geesh...

Who the hell wants to talk kicker battle when nearly 200 million was spent this offseason to score tds. Who givesafuck about fistpumps?
