The post-mortem from preseason opening loss

After Sunday night's 24-20 loss to the Cowboys, Dolphins coach Joe Philbin did his postgame press conference out on the field, by the end zone. As a group of reporters surrounded him for his four-minute talk, a nearby fan yelled over at the top of his lungs:

"Breaking news," the fan yelled, "the Dolphins still suck."

I wouldn't go that far nor would I make assumptions on a season or even a preaseason based on this preseason opener against the Dallas Cowboys.

But on this night the Dolphins definitely didn't present much of a counter-argument against that heckler.

They didn't just lose this one 24-20, but lost it ugly. They played poorly, they played sloopy, and they got beat. Not a good recipe for turning the thing around in time to start the season fast.

"I told the team I thought we would play better," coach Joe Philbin said. "That's obviously not the way you want to start any football game, I don't care if it's preseason, Game 1, the Super Bowl or any game in between."

The start was ugly. Lamar Miller fumbled on the first offensive play.

The Cowboys recovered inside the Dolphins 10 yard line and scored.

The galling thing?

The defense that started for Dallas was missing every defensive starter in the lineup save one. Yes, coach Jason Garrett sat practically everyone and still won.

"I told our team we've talked a lot about taking the ball away. We've talked a lot about ball security. We spent a lot of practice time but it didn't show up on the field today. We have to go back to work and get that corrected. That's the reason we lost the game and that's what's going to turn this program around more than anything else is us doing a much, much better job in that category."

Yes, it was a bad start for Miller, who is trying to replace Reggie Bush, but he recovered a little bit. He finished with two carries for 21 yards.

"I had to make up for it and look forward to the next play," Miller said. "I was trying to move the chains and help the football team."

Miller added the team, "can only get better."

Obviously. The Dolphins lost the turnover margin, 2-0. One of those was a 75-yard interception return TD by reserve linebacker Devonte Holloman, who picked off Matt Moore. The pick goes on Moore's stat sheet, but the problem was that rookie receiver Chad Bumphis sat down in the zone when Moore was expecting him to run through.

"It was a bad read on my part," Bumphis said. "That one's on me. But I'm going to learn from that and that miscommunication won't happen again."

Bumphis wasn't bad otherwise. He caught five passes for 85 yards to lead the team. Michael Egnew had four catches for 52 yards but had a drop. Keenan Davis had three catches for 48 yards and a TD.

"Keenan Davis made a couple of plays," Philbin said. "Bumphis has caught the ball in practice ... The kid gets open and he catches the ball."

Moore finished the game with 19 completions on 29 attempts for 238 yards. He played most of the second quarter but was forced back in the game in the fourth quarter when third-stringer Pat Devlin "got nicked," according to Philbin.

Dolphins05 rmattsacked jwrI'm sure Moore loved the idea of coming back in the game. He was sacked once (which you see courtesy a photo by Joe Rimkus) and hit hard on multiple occasions as the second-team line -- particularly reserve left tackle Dallas Thomas -- seemed to struggle. Frankly, I'm wondering if Thomas has the quickness to play left tackle. If he does, he didn't show it tonight.

It looked like Devlin took a shot that had him a little glassy-eyed in the locker room afterward.

Speaking of quarterbacks, starter Ryan Tannehill completed two of five passes for 1 yards. His 47.9 QB rating was the lowest of the Miami QBs. His inability to connect on a couple of simple slant throws to WRs showed either his lack or work with those receivers, or a twinge of inaccuracy or both.

Afterward, Tannehill conceded the Dolphins looked ugly.

"It wasn't our cleanest game, wasn't our best game," he said. "I'm glad we can get that one out of the way early. We have four more preseason games before we get into the regular season. So hopefully this was our sloppy game."

The leading rusher on the night for Miami was Jonas Gray. He rushed for 41 yards on seven carries. Gray missed all of last season as he rehabilitated a knee injury from his Notre Dame days.

"This was a reassurance that my knee is 100 percent," he said.

I thought Martin did ok at LT, he held his own. He aso blew up the D to give room for LM on his two good carries. I think people here are jumping the gun hating on this guy already. I do agree he needs to get better at pass blocking though, and fast.

Here's an idea let's talk about something that had nothing to do with last night. Chemistry with a WR that hasn't suited up in how many days? Really the chemistry excuse is just that. I really don't want to hear excuses.

Some of the guys played poorly in our first preseason game. No two ways about it. BUT It's ok It's a preseason game and there's no better time for a lousy game. Now if it's week 3 in preseason...I'll worry.

Wait a sec, but both Miller's runs were to the right.

Oscar, They went left. Or at least one did. Either way, He blew up the D on the run plays.

Oh oscar!

I was watching him at the beginning of the game, He destroyed a guy on one of the plays. I think you may be right that the last one may have gone right. Unless I was already drunk, but that should not have been the case. :)

The sky is falling (u morons)

Well, not much time to think about it, we have another Game on Friday.

I agree, the team looked sloppy, out of sync, unprepared, even for the HOF game. Dallas clearly looked ready and we didn't.

With that being said, I'm not ready to pass judgement, or worry, about Martin. He played most of last season out of position. we can't expect an instant pro bowler, but he has to start looking the part too. Remember, he helped Luck have a great college career. I will give him 3 games into the regular season before I pass judgement, I just still need to see the potential is there. Obviously the coaching staff things so.

Thank goodness. We only have a few days of covering this preseason game. Things that I did like.

Miller and Gillislee running the ball.
The low amount of penalties.
The play of Bumphis (except that pick 6 he floated up in the air)
Dion Jordan that guy has a presence on the field.
Shelby had a couple sacks
Fields punting the ball
Egnew played well and caught 4 passes

Except the one to open the game where he fumbled. . Other wise the hole was wide open

I have been a fan of Shelby's from the start. His technique, the technique he had early on as rookie reminded me of some of the greats.

Granted he needs a lot of work, a lot of reps. But Shelby can be special. He needs more work anchoring and setting the edge. But the Kid is a natural and should get a fair shake from this Coaching staff.

I don't even want to waste a lot of words on Jordan. With a little work, he'll be a guy we can put in almost anywhere on the front 7.

I tried to tell people about Dallas Thomas and they crucified me here. For the life of me I can't see what Phiolbin, Coyle or Ireland might have seen in this Kid.

Go check youtube on Thomas at Tennessee. When playing against quality opponents he looked just like he did last night. I said shortly after the draft and I'll say it again, I don't think Thomas has the skills to play at this level. A totally wasted pick in my opinion.

That was a bad showing. But it was a week earlier than our usual start to pre season. I mean, come on Trusnik started at MLB and Spitler got playing time early.

Anyone trying to make any **DETERMINATIONS** on last nights performance is Knee Jerking a little. Don't get me wrong, we have some major concerns. But their really no different than before last nights game.

Tannehill is still a major concern. As is Jonathon Martin. Which I would have played MORE. But that's just me. Also, I think, if you want to be honest, the entire O-Line and it's cohesiveness is one big question mark.

But the fumble is nothing to judge anything on and Tannehill's five pass attempts weren't either. After all, this was nothing more than a early scrimmage featuring mostly 3nd and 3rd stringers from the git go.

Philbin gets an A+ nonetheless, I didn't see him Fist Pump a Field Goal all game.

BTW-Armando, the last line of your article was "One For The Ages!!!!". I almost fell out of my chair laughing when I read it!

Go Phins!

Dam-! It's all on Tannehill now. I guess as it should be.

Only impressed by Jordan. 2 impact plays and a nice tackle dropping in coverage. 1 sack but should have been credited with a half sack with Shelby. He pressured the qb into him for the sack.

Bumphis/Tyms/McNutt/Davis, are you guys kidding me? We're talking 4th wr audition at best.

Vince Lombardi would have cut Dallas Thomas on the spot for getting trucked by a guy 70lbs lighter. His locker would have been cleaned out at halftime and told to catch the Greyhound home at his own expense.

Tannehill? He would still be having Lombardi's foot removed from his ass even a day later. It would be more painless if he were cut on the spot.

Shelby had an awesome sack. He bullrushed the tackle all the way back to the QB. The Tackle was holding, he was hanging on for dear life. Then Shelby finished like a Pro. Reached out with one hand and snatched the QB up!

That was a thing of Beauty!

When you wade though all the scrubs of pre season, we're going to end up with Shelby, Vernon and Wake at DE. Behind them, we'll have Jordan Free Lancing all over the place.

When it's all said and done, it's not a bad Proposition!

And Dashi can Suck and Swallow with the best of them.

Yeah, matty but the hole I believe was thru right Guard. Thinking about it now, Samuda and Clabo played very well(besides Pouncey of course).

Same crap every year. Homer bloggers saying:

Its only preseason. Or, It's only the 1st gm of preseason. How can you make a judgement on that.

Here's how:

2003 10 6 0

2004 NFL AFC East 4th 4 12 0

2005 NFL AFC East 2nd 9 7 0

2006 NFL AFC East 4th 6 10 0 Defensive POY - Jason Taylor

2007 NFL AFC East 4th 1 15 0 Walter Payton Man of the Year - Jason Taylor

2008 NFL AFC East 1st 11 5 0 Lost Wild Card Playoffs (Ravens) 27-9 Comeback POY - Chad Pennington

2009 NFL AFC East 3rd 7 9 0

2010 NFL AFC East 3rd 7 9 0

2011 NFL AFC East 3rd 6 10 0 Pro Bowl MVP- Brandon Marshall

2012 NFL AFC East 2nd 7 9 0

That's 3 winning seasons in 10yrs. Still, koolaid drinkers sing the same song every season.

Heard the Phins signed R. Jones to a 4 yr extension. That's some good news.

I think you're right.

From Pouncey to Samuda and Clabo we looked good.

But, it was only very briefly and against a lot of 2nd teamers.

Still, it was a bright spot. Miller was able to cut and go! It wasn't much, but it looked good.

It is a fact that the 1973 SB(1974) Champions Miami Dolphins and better Team than the undefeated one by Shula's own admission lost all of their pre_Season Games that year. Just saying...

Every team in the league has had bad stretches. It's a fact of Life in the NFL.

But that's not really the point.

I guess what you're saying is this. The Dolphins have been terrible for a Decade. So it's OK for me to judge them on this one, week early, Pre Season game.

OK, that's your right and your perogative. Knock yourself out.

I on the other hand, will stay balanced and keep everything in perspective.

But you go ahead, the team has been terrible, sooooooooooo, this ONE PRE SEASON Game means everything too you-ROTFLMAO!

Tell em Odin. I see no connection from one regime to the next. Players are different and so are the coaches. If Sparano were the coach I would be playing in traffic about now. Hated his training camps.

Heard the Phins signed R. Jones to a 4 yr extension. That's some good news.

Thanks for the info. This is Good News!

Jones was a Terror at Georgia. It took him sone time to adjust to the NFL. But now, it seems he has a Good Coach that knows how to get the most of his skills.

Jones is another guy I had in my Mock that Year.

I had Jamar Taylor in this years Mock!

One thing has remained the same, we still start off slow every year. All of a sudden the Jets and Bills are not looking like easy wins.

Did you see how worried Ireland looked yesterday? Philbin too.

I did not have Dion Jordan remotely in my mock and look how he's turning out. Mocks mean less than crap. The board of the GMs do mean so.

Darn that Jeff Ireland. He went and extended Jones behind everyones back. Where are the Ross is too cheap claims now? Care to explain? Yeah probably not as always.

miami solid everywhere except oline and that one flaw will bring down an entire series unless ireland fixes it. he had the chance to in april and refused

Good news wrapping up Reshad. Bad news about Devlin.

Lets pray for new ownership, and a new GM.

Whats the news on Devlin?

Ross and Ireland are getting exactly what they deserve. SHYT!

Bobbyd12, why is devlin bad news...hes not that hurt and wont see the field this season anyway... camp arm?

Nobody should be getting worked up over Pre Season Pre Game 1. Yes, the turnovers and tacking fundamentals were disappointing.Thats correctable. Martin will be ok, nothing spectacular. The concern for me is lack of depth at LT. If Martin goes down, we have a problem. Dallas Thomas is obviously not the immediate fix. Here is hoping John Jerry and Louis get heathy, quick. Jerry seems to be only one who might be able to back Martin.

Moore has outplayed Devlin 3 seasons in a row now. Moore is one of the best back up QB's in the league.

At least the"pundits" are exposing empress Ross for being naked. Nobody of the S, Fla. media has the stones to tell it like it is. Ms. Ross is utterly clueless. Ireland is a know nothing hack. Philbin is way over his head and his players don't play for him. This will get much worse before it gets better.
At least Tallahassee refused to take part in the taxpayer rape scenario Ms. Ross and Sandra DEE put together.

Many good college teams are better than these Dolphins. Texas A&M with Manziel would kick our ass.

The Canes are probably better then the Fins. They have a better QB too.

why did gb sign vince young

finfam13, you can never say Devlin won't see the field, stranger things have happened. But I like to see consistency, especially in camp. Even if he is just 3rd string QB, he still takes a lot of snaps and works a lot with the younger guys.

Moore is the best QB on the roster. Philbin and the Fins will realize it very soon.

Posted by: Neil'sGhost | August 05, 2013 at 07:46 PM

ROFLMAO! Same guy different sign in. Hysterical nonsense sprinkled with lots of calling people girls or gay. Fascinating stuff. I wish more adults visited this blog.

ticket sales have come to a screeching halt lol

shula if that was correct then we have huge problems and have no chance this year

Biggest issue will be this wr core. I knew we should have taken a wr high but chose to sign a slow outside wr in Gibson who isn't explosive or fast. Got Wallace and no one else. All these scrubs we found under rocks that were either undrafted on on other teams practice squads look awful. Bumphus is tough but slow ans hell for a little wr.

O-line was trash..starters and backups. Tanne looks like a rookie again. Locks on to primary..doesn't read the defense...doesn't try to make it thru his progressions....inaccurate...un-excusable. Don't g.a.f. if it is a preseason football game.

who knows if fins are good or not, but its hilarious to think that anyone saw either way in that game. u are either a idiot casual fan or legally retarded if u think u got anything from that game. weakness still the same, we need a lt

Great stuff in here. I remember the year the Dolphins went 11-5, does everyone else? I remember the hysterical whiners in here saying how we would drop another win (from 1-15) and go 0-16 that year. They knew this by the second preseason game apparently.

Now either the same people or people just as braindead are saying the same thing after the stinkin hof game in which our team used NO PLAYS FROM OUR PLAYBOOK ON EITHER SIDE OF THE BALL.

So the morons (2 or 3 of them) in here want us to now believe the team will be WORSE than last year. Meaning the coaching will get worse, the 2nd year players will play worse, and all of the talent the team acquired in the offseason will now take a step back and play worse than they ever have in their careers.

I'm just wondering, what are you basing this retarded evaluation on? Hate or stupidity?

In Irescums 6th year the team has more holes then swiss cheese!!!!

Odin, good call on Thomas way back. He looked like shyt last night. Still think his position is left guard not tackle and that he was likely drafted to rpl. Cogs next year but damn that boy looked bad last night. Didnt get a chance to look over his film like i told u I would, but the film he put out last night......brutal!

Props to u, sir

Irescum has more busts then Dolly Parton!! LMAO!!!!!!!!

No LT, no RT, no RB, no QB, no HC, no GM, no owner........whats that spell?

DISASTER 1-15 Again

Phins78 = Craig M

They both whine and ridicule and call others morons all day every day.

Pray for new ownership.

oline is what they have to fix and they have around a month

Great Dane's are majestic dogs. They love peanut butter and are big enough to take a good pounding (if you know what I mean)

Does any one remember a guy named brandon Albert that no one in here wanted except me and a few other guys? Hmmmmmm just saying

We need help oh huh maybe next year

Humans are such pathetic creatures. Always seeking recognition about being right. Hi, look at me, I was right, right? Wasn't I?

I was right...look at me.

Our o line sucks this might be a problem
