Vernon likely starting DE, Lane demoted

First round pick Dion Jordan is unlikely to win the starting defensive end job opposite Cam Wake because he hasn't gotten enough work in practice or games to mount the challenge and is unlikely to get much work any time soon as he nurses the recurring shoulder injury that has nagged him this year.

Jordan, who had shoulder surgery in February and missed all of the offseason and the start of camp, re-injured the same shoulder in Friday night's preseason game against Jacksonville. It is not considered serious but he did not practice the past two days and while his status is day-to-day, he may not even play in the preseason game against Houston Saturday.

"We're obviously taking some precautions as we move forward with Dion," defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle said. "We don't want to overload him at this point. We got a plan in place to get him ready to participate at the level we feel best at at the beginning of the season so we'd like to see as much of him as we can but we're going to be careful how we proceed."

While the Dolphins do expect Jordan to be ready for the Sept. 8 opener at Cleveland, his role will likely be as substitute on passing downs. Olivier Vernon will be the starting right end, barring an unforseen circumstance.

The only way Jordan could change that is by getting more work in practice. But, of course, that's not likely to happen now that the team is taking "precautions" with the rookie because of the shoulder.

"He hasn't gotten the reps that would be necessary to put him out there and start at this point," Coyel said. "But you still have three weeks of training camp. It's a little bit premature to determine exactly what his status will be at the beginning of the season. We're taking it one day at a time."

Today it became clear Jorvorskie Lane is struggling to keep his spot on the roster, much less his starting fullback job from a season ago. Lane was relegated to snaps with the reserves while Evan Rodriguez took all the available first-team snaps at fullback.

That endangers Lane's spot on the roster because the Dolphins are going to keep one fullback at most when they trim the roster to 53 players and the backup fullback won't be one of those.

That doesn't, however, mean Rodriguez is secure in winning a roster spot. He must still perform well but even if he does, the Dolphins may still decide to go without any fullbacks on the roster and instead let H-back Charles Clay fill that role as well as his duties at tight end.

Dolphins offensive coordinator Mike Sherman has said he likes using Clay and tight end Dustin Keller in the lineup at the same time and that makes the fullback position one of uncertainty.

You aren't paying him Jake long money. You can afford to develop the 3rd pick overall. No need to rush. D.Jordan would be getting paid in 4 years what Jake got paid for One as a Rookie.

D.Jordan would be playing so many positions it would be a waste of his talent starting him and playing him at only 1 position.

As long as he takes snaps away from Misi. I am OK with him coming off the bench.

And good thing we have Odrick at DT else we would really have a Log Jam at DE.

It is a good problem to have when you have so much depth you don't know how to divide Minutes/Snaps. I expect Philbin to do a better job than Spo rotating his Players.

Fake O. Kelly, did real Kelly block you?

That would imply I ever actually followed that tool. I get my information from his camp reports. Apparently everyone is doing great except for the undrafted guys and Tannehill.

My opinion is this: Cam Wake is 31 and although he hasn't been in the NFL long, that is old to NFL standards. So I think they have two great talents in Jordan and Vernon to have the two great Defensive Ends that we need once Cam gets a step slower. Remember, in two years Cam will be 33-34 and may be declining by then. In comes Dion Jordan at one End and Olivier Vernon on the other end. I like that we got some Marbles and moved up to draft Jordan. Now we can have two Defensive Ends for the future in Vernon and Jordan. So letting him slowly develop this year and to come in on third downs is fine by me. Wake is still solid and Vernon is ahead of Jordan, so why not just let him learn this year to be a third down specialist and hopefully will be part of the rotation later in the season.

WIN, LOSE, OR TIE... DOLPHINS TILL I DIE!!

DION JORDAN

NFL LINE BACKER, LINE MAN AND SAFETY

CADolFan,

Sounds about right. It also helps having a guy like Wake along mentoring the 2 for the next 3-4 Years. By the time Wake retires the other 2 would be coming into their prime.
Along with T-Hill and his Offensive line and Running Game.

The Dolphins will win now and in the Future.

Our starters are real good and we have some depth at key positions building up.

Well there's a few minutes I'll never get back. Yikes,,hope the blog picks up in September.

EVERYTHING IS STILL OKAY THE COUNT DOWN TO CLEVELAND GAME STARTS OFFICIALLY NEXT WEEK. REST ANY AND ALL IMPORTANT PLAYERS. THIS IS A MARATHON NOT A SPRINT AND THE FINS NEED A HEALTHY 53 TO GO FROM 7-9 TO 10-6 OR BETTER. BASED ON WHAT WE'VE SEEN SO FAR IS THIS 1) THE DEFENSE IS CAPABLE OF BEING TOP 5 IF NOT #1. WHY!! THE RUN DEFENSE HAS BEEN STRONG OUR STRENGTH AS WELL AS RED ZONE DEFENSE,, BUT NOW WITH THE ADDITION OF GRIMES AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF DAVIS AND THE IMPROVEMENT OF VERNON AND THE TALENT OF JORDAN THE PASS DEFENSE WILL IMPROVE. GUYS I KNOW WE HAVE A TOUGH FIRST 5 GAMES BUT I AM CONVINCED THIS DEFENSE CAN AND WILL KEEP US IN ALL OF THEM AND MAYBE EVEN WIN 1OR 2 !! OFFENSIVELY !! I DON'T CARE WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT TANNEHILL/MARTIN/MILLER/JERRY !! THESE GUYS PLAYED LAST YEAR AND DID A GOOD JOB FOR US AND NOW THEY ALL HAVE MORE EXPERIENCE UNDER THEIR BELTS!! WE ALSO NOW HAVE A YOUNG KICKER WHO CAN KICK THE AIR OUT OF A FOOTBALL 58 YDS AND MANY TOUCHBACKS !! FIELDS IS ONE OF THE BEST PUNTERS IN THE GAME AS WELL.. ADD ALL OF THIS UP AND YOU HAVE A VERY GOOD FOOTBALL TEAM. AS LONG AS THEY DO NOT TURN THE "DAMN" BALL OVER THEY WILL WIN A LOT OF GAMES (BARRING INJURES) SO REST THEM,SIT THEM, WHATEVER IT TAKES TO HAVE THEM READY TO KICK CLEVELAND'S AZZ!
GO FINS!!

Any reports from practice today?

Fake O. Kelly

I like Omar but yea he never said something good about THill, and if you post something he don't like it he just ignore or block you.

Hope not be block here.

Omar Kelly @ 2:40 that was hilrious! I think people are overreacting about Jordan right now. The team is just playing it safe. We still have a full 27 days until the season opener. Lets see how hes doing in a week.

Ireland seems to be taking an interesting strategy of drafting injured players in 13. Jordan, Taylor, and Thomas all had issues. Maybe he figured they slid and it is worth the risk.

Kinda BS Jordan is already hurt. College ball that rough on the body?

The Texans, if all their Players participate, will be a stern but good test of our Team. Their great D line will test our Oline and their safeties, including Ed Reed, will test Tannehill. On O, Andre Johnson and DeAndre Hopkins will test our cornerbacks. It is an excellent opportunity for us.

There is now talk of shutting Dion down for the season. They don't want him risking anything at less than 100%.

Eh, Lane/Rodriguez, 6 in one hand, half dozen in the other. Neither will do much to help or hurt the team IMO.

However, I think Mando really airbrushed over what should've been the main story from the Jax game. I think Sturgis did enough to win the starting kicking job. The 58 yd FG was impressive, but what was even MORE impressive to me was all the kickoffs out of the endzone. THAT'S HUGE! And a BIG negative on Carpenter (who rarely if ever kicks it out of the endzone). I would choose Sturgis on that ability alone (how many times have we seen big run backs and the other team starting with good field position?). Add to that the savings (though it's not a huge number) and I think we've got our new kicker. I like Carpenter, but it's fine with me if we change it up (kickers don't deserve any benefit of the doubt IMO). We may not know what we have with Sturgis, but we know what Carpenter is all about (excellent from 40 in, suspect from 45 out, and can't kickoff out of the endzone ever). #UPGRADE!

Shutting down Dion Jordan would be a great idea. And those who criticize the pick are totally wrong. The two sure things in the draft were gone when the Dolphins picked at number three. And keep in mind that the Dolphins got the pick for hardly anything, a high first pick and a second rounder. There were slim pickings in that third spot. Best to take an injured player who might shine in the future. That is why Jeff Ireland is GM and bloggers here are not. Learn from the tactics of the chess master.

go finssssssssssssss

Everyone pretty much knows Sturgis will be kicker gm1 reg season. But it doesn't mean you cut Carpenter right now. You wait until final cut.

Carpenter will kick for someone this year. So what happens if cut him right now and Sturgis goes down with a leg injury. Carpenter would be claimed right away and we will be dumpster diving for his replacement.

IRA @ 5:50...Now that's funny!

Lane? Definitely wouldn't have used the #3 overall ick on him.

Ohhh..................... you mean "the other" Lane. At this point who really cares what happens with his prospects of remaining a Miami Dolphin....

so wrong ireland rep, for hardly anything? could of had eiifert and b albert right now instead

Cocoajoe is old enough to remember who I am.

Please share your recollections.

I have to agree with you DC. As impressive as the 58 yarder was, it was only one kick.

A lot of Fads and strategies come and go in the NFL. But the Field Position Game has been the one constant. Sturgis' abilities on Kick Offs is HUGE! That's a Big Plus in his favor.

I personally don't think that Carpenter came overcome this fact. Carpenters Kick Offs are barely acceptable and he's always been iffy outside of 45 yards.

Sturgis can bag this competition by showing some consitency. Despite what the Coaching Staff might say publicly, At this point, I'd say it's his job to loose.

End note: Other teams will KNOW Miami won't keep both. BUT, If the Dolphins nix Carpenter, he'll go through the waiver process. This means the worse teams can make earlier claims. I believe that some teams will be willing to offer a 6th or 7th round pick to avoid the waiver process.

good points on sturgis but still the main reason carpenter is long gone is he makes a ton more than sturgis. younger ,cheaper, better easy decision

Yet another person who can't spell like an adult.

"Loose" and "lose" mean entirely different things, dummy.

IRA, Maybe some of the best writing this tired blog has seen this year.

And so you took the time to respond because???

I've already said all I'm going to say about Ireland and what he did with our 12th and 42nd pick of the Draft.

If you really want to look at it in it's **Purest Form**, it's not pretty(The Kool Aid Drinkers might want to avert their eyes).

Ireland took our 12th, 42nd and 54th picks of the draft and couldn't manage to land us a Single Every Down Starter.

Don't get me wrong, I love Jordan and Taylor. But none of it changes the ugly facts of what Ireland did with these Premium Draft Picks.

It might turn out that Jordan, Taylor and even Will Davis turn out to be Pro Bowl Hall Of Famers. EVENTUALLY!

But that's neither here nor there at the moment. The facts are that Ireland took the 12th, 42, 54th and 93rd(Will Davis)picks and might not have a 3 down starter among them.

I'm hoping for the best, but it's pretty ridiculous when you look at it in it's **Purest Form**.

Go Jeffy!!!!

Yah...okay...you maybe take a chance on ONE injured player...not three...(Jordan, Taylor and Thomas)
....and if you take A chance...you do it in the later rounds, not in the FIRST with the 3RD OVERALL frikkin pick!!!!!!
...let's be real ....

Quit crying!!!!
We haven't played a real game and I see so much negativism!
Get a life people!!!!
Draft picks are judged after the season...

Go Fins!!!

Odin, Afraid that we'll be stuck with the brain dead Ireland till..
#1 Idiot Ross has to buy 40 Thousand seats to have game Televised.
#2 Ireland is pronounced brain dead by a coroner.(Witch BTW is only a matter of time)
#3 Ross sells the fins.
Either way its a giant tuurd sandwich and we all gotta take a bite of it.
JMHO

BTW - Is it just me guys or has Monkey Boys Trolling been weaker than ever lately? I mean exceptionally "Panzified"?

Well, keep pumping up the blog hits champ!

(Oops......I misspeeled again, that should read.....** ChUmp ** not Champ. Two totally different meanings ;)

So I guess odin would have preferred to waste the #12 pick on a TE no better than what we picked up in the 4th round.

Complaining with out offering a better solution is what losers do. Knocking a trade up for the highest rated defensive player in the entire draft is what idiots do.

So odin is a loser and and idiot. (this explains his gold membership in the CJ club)

Dire = YG4L
It's sad..
YG, Call me I can get you work.

Odin, I think I understand now why you are a Joe Cocker fan.

Is it just me guys

====================================

Well, your special friend Dashe isn't here so I guess that would be a yes.

God, don't even mention Dallas Thomas. Throw that in the mix and Ireland is......is......(Sorry, I'll have to get back to you when I think of a worthy phrase to describe his latest work).

After we drafted Thomas, I watched his Highlight Reels on youtube. They were LOW-LIGHT Reels actually. I got crucified for posting how God Awful he looked at Tenneesee. He dominated College Scrubs that will never sniff an NFL OTA, let alone a camp. But against good competition he got schooled.....ROUTINELY!

Everybody crucified me, right up until they saw Thomas play.

The Cowboys 2nd and 3rd stringers were throwing him around like Monkey Boys Blow Up Doll!

Wow, YG, Stick to one name please.(It will help those who just want to skip your posts.
Again thanks.

The draft SOLUTION was to give KC the 2nd round pick they wanted in the trade for Albert (securing the LT position), use pick #8 to draft the highest rated RT, and thus solidifying the O-line, so that our DEVELOPING QB has a fighting chance to stand and throw instead of running for his life...

.....many here called for that approach THEN...so don't say it's second guessing....

Jacksonville's helmets make them look like palmetto bugs.

Dire we may have picked up a TE but Sims is a glorified blocker. He was one of the slowest TE's in the draft. Dude looks slow as syrup on the field. Not fast enough to be a lb or saftey and his routes are sloppy. Sims hands are average. His best attribute is blocking.

When your team is dying for an explosive playmaker at te you don't draft a big body te who can't stretch the seam. Keller has lost a step also. Ireland would have been much better taking a faster..more fluid te who will be a consistent threat in the passing game. Especially after looking at the acorns fighting for the 4th and 5th wr spot.

Gibson is un-impressive also. Wake me up when we get an atlanta falcons situation where they have 2 wr's on the outside that can get deep easily and beat single or double coverage consistently. Fluck the Mike Wallace will open it open for the entire passing game. Doesn't work for Houston with Dre who is better than Wallace..won't work for us until we get a 1b.

....I meant 12th pick...not 8th...

Sheesh, Monkey Boy seems especially ornaery today.

He must have had a rough night at work.

Whats-a-matter Honey? Blow out another Knee Pad?

I know.....I know Sweetie, it sucks spending your hard earned money on new knee pads instead of another 8-Ball of METH!

Oh well, them knees ain't going to protect themselves you know ;)

Stra8...I know one thing for sure...if the QB doesn't have time to wait on the deep pattern to open, it doesn't matter how many speedsters you have....

Oh for goodness sake Jordan is already out injured? well done Jeff:tosser

Oh yes, I'm inclined to take seriously the opinions of people that call themselves Buster and Stra8alla.

Now get back to the schoolyard where you belong!

Lol....okay Ollie!!!!

I know Sweetie, it sucks spending your hard earned money on new knee pads instead of another 8-Ball of METH!

----------

Does ever one single day go by that odin doesn't mention meth or homoTalk?

Ever?

I mean, EVER?

Stra8,

Sims had a better 40 time than Ertz and tied Eifert with a 4.68. He's shed 20 pounds since then and should be quicker/faster. Sims is a Junior meaning he should have considerable upside. And is anything but a slow plodding, burly blocker.

freep.com — When he was at Michigan State, Dion Sims was considered a pass-catching tight end with work to do on his blocking. Now that he’s about to enter the football workforce, the 6-foot-5 Sims is considered a burly blocker with things to prove downfield — even though he has cut his weight from 285 to 263 since the end of his junior season.
=========================

I think you're seriously underating Sims. You might want to check your sources.

Do you think the Dolphins are really going to just dump Lane or Carpenter??

We have trades in the NFL. Hopefully someone will give us a pick of some kind for them. Remember, Rishard Matthews was a 6th round pick.

I agree. The trolls posts are getting worse and that's astonishing because I didn't think they could get any worse then they already are.

The queer nicknames are where he jumped the shark.

Krissy cry is the DUMBEST nickname I've ever heard. Don't you just feel sorry for this guy when you read those posts? Kris isn't even here and he's fantasizing about what he will do when he arrives or talking about an opinion Kris had days earlier. lol I mean wtf?

Dire we may have picked up a TE but Sims is a glorified blocker. He was one of the slowest TE's in the draft. Dude looks slow as syrup on the field.

===================================================

Sims is faster than Ertz and tied Eifert with a 4.68. He's a Junior and lost 20 pounds since the combine.

I already said this earlier, but I wanted to add an interesting point.

Sims was a dual recruit(Basket Ball/Football). He placed 4th in the vote for Mr. Basket Ball coming out of High Scholl and was a 4 Star Recruit. Was offered multiple Basket Ball schalorships(as well as football) and even played B-Ball at Michigan State.

His draft status/ranking would have been a lot higher were it not for his entanglement in a computer theft ring being orchestated by his own Father.

You're seriously underating Sims and his abilities.

Oh yes, I'm inclined to take seriously the opinions of people that call themselves Buster and Stra8alla.

Now get back to the schoolyard where you belong!

LOL, so true,,,,hahahaha

Proud supporter of JIF peanut butter since 1993. My lap dogs like it, and I looooooooooove it!

It would be great to trade one or both...I'm sure the FO is trying ....BUT..
..we were 7 & 9 last season.....just how many teams would want them?....
...Lane was pretty much ineffective last year, and Carpenter seems to have seen his better days as an effective kicker.....
...well..here's hoping...

There is no way in hell this team is close to competing with the Patriots. Brady is probably in the top 3 best QBs ever to play the position and he is on fire. Miami with Ross and Ireland have made too many mistakes bringing talent down here. Now a first round pick, third overall, which they gave up a second to obtain, has a chronic injury. SMART! This season I see another 6-10 or 7-9.
