Vernon likely starting DE, Lane demoted

First round pick Dion Jordan is unlikely to win the starting defensive end job opposite Cam Wake because he hasn't gotten enough work in practice or games to mount the challenge and is unlikely to get much work any time soon as he nurses the recurring shoulder injury that has nagged him this year.

Jordan, who had shoulder surgery in February and missed all of the offseason and the start of camp, re-injured the same shoulder in Friday night's preseason game against Jacksonville. It is not considered serious but he did not practice the past two days and while his status is day-to-day, he may not even play in the preseason game against Houston Saturday.

"We're obviously taking some precautions as we move forward with Dion," defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle said. "We don't want to overload him at this point. We got a plan in place to get him ready to participate at the level we feel best at at the beginning of the season so we'd like to see as much of him as we can but we're going to be careful how we proceed."

While the Dolphins do expect Jordan to be ready for the Sept. 8 opener at Cleveland, his role will likely be as substitute on passing downs. Olivier Vernon will be the starting right end, barring an unforseen circumstance.

The only way Jordan could change that is by getting more work in practice. But, of course, that's not likely to happen now that the team is taking "precautions" with the rookie because of the shoulder.

"He hasn't gotten the reps that would be necessary to put him out there and start at this point," Coyel said. "But you still have three weeks of training camp. It's a little bit premature to determine exactly what his status will be at the beginning of the season. We're taking it one day at a time."

Today it became clear Jorvorskie Lane is struggling to keep his spot on the roster, much less his starting fullback job from a season ago. Lane was relegated to snaps with the reserves while Evan Rodriguez took all the available first-team snaps at fullback.

That endangers Lane's spot on the roster because the Dolphins are going to keep one fullback at most when they trim the roster to 53 players and the backup fullback won't be one of those.

That doesn't, however, mean Rodriguez is secure in winning a roster spot. He must still perform well but even if he does, the Dolphins may still decide to go without any fullbacks on the roster and instead let H-back Charles Clay fill that role as well as his duties at tight end.

Dolphins offensive coordinator Mike Sherman has said he likes using Clay and tight end Dustin Keller in the lineup at the same time and that makes the fullback position one of uncertainty.

I think Clabo is the best RT we've had in Yrs!

J Martin was tons better at RT then Clabo!!!

Posted by: Get Sense | August 12, 2013 at 09:40 PM

To each his own I couldn't disagree more! Martin needed the weight room last Yr. and it was evident in Pre-Season week-1 last Yr. were Bucs back-up RDE on about 3rd play from scrimmage threw Martin back in the QB's face. I remember seeing the replay of what was an inside draw to Bush that went for a nice gain and thinking this kid needs alot of work! In technique and strength conditioning. He got better at RT as the Season went but started horribly! I read were this Off-Season was pulling tractor trailers in N.Cali to get stronger and feel he looks it this Pre-Season. His only big miss for me was Vs. Cowboys were OLB and DE rushed and he whiffed on both with Tanne rolling right but outside of that has been very steady. We will see this week Vs. Watt although just how ready he looks for the Season.

The problems I've seen in the preseason have less to do with lack of ability and more to do with a lack of communication IMO. The problems have been mostly on blitzes and stunts where guys are confused on their assignments. It is a problem that can improve with time and real game preparations (studying for opponents) instead of preseason play.

budtki,

To me the best player in this draft who slid because of supposed medical ? was Jarvis Jones and Steelers could have gotten a HUGE steal in what to me was the best player coming out! We will see given Jordan was a physical phenom yadda yadda yadda but Jones is a straight up baller who dominated in the SEC!

Fin4life must be Chad Henne
Jake Long just got beat up by Cleveland.
He was destroyed at least 3 times.
He must be still hurt...

did long really stink it up in the preseason game?

What I see as well being biggest issue!

I wonder.

For years now the talk is Brady/Belichek, the greatest QB/HC combo in the NFL.

But wait.

Why is it?

That few recognize?

That Eli/Tom slayed the dragon, not once, but twice. Not just twice, but twice convincingly.

Do you have a reading comprehension problem???? The ? was could Long have been worked in still making the moves we made and the answer is HELL YES! The fact we didn't speaks to what the Coaching staff and F.O. felt about him at this point and I happen to agree! Far cry from what you seem to have interpreted!

Who gives a crap about Jake Long anymore??? Next!!! The Eagle and the Jags are mimicking what the Dolphins did last year...take a LT and play him at RT until the high price LT you got leaves...then the switcheroo!!! Of course Martin was a 2nd round guy compared to these 1st RDers drafted this year...If we did not move up for Jordan...Kelly would have grabbed him in a blink...Jordan will be fine...Defense doesn't need Jordan to be an pro bowler this year...

jason taylor had 139.5 career sacks, 47 forced fumbles, 8 picks, 3 tds...should be a HOF

AMEN! Couldn't agree more!! I felt he was gone the minute he went back on IR last Yr. and in honesty felt he should have given back his FAT WEEKLY CHECK last Yr after Indy game were 11 Yr. vet Freeney(NOT EVEN SHADOW OF FORMER SELF EITHER) made him look BAD as in MEDIOCRE LT BAD!

Forget pro bowl but how bout gettin on the field for more then 1 play at a time!

All phases of the passing game need to come together better...still very early but not where they want to be in a few weeks...The running game is going to be fine...I don't think we had an offensive penalty in the Jags game...that's impressive...In fact penalties have been very low for the most part across the board...that's discipline and a good sign...I think...

Will be 1st ballot in 2017!

NO doubt...JT is HOFer for sure.....

I remember that very clearly fin4...I remember the first time he crapped on Long...I thought whoa Freeny still had a little something in there...then it just kept happening...and I thought...Longs done...Long was done way before he went on IR...and I'm not giving Martin a pass BUT...a good bit of the pressure I saw on that side looked to be Cogs bad IMO...and some miscommunication...I thought Cogs played like a beast about half the season last year and then started to look bad...The biggest thing we lost with Long was his leadership...martin wont be able to replace that no matter how well he plays this year...and that is a big adjustment for the unit...

If Long has issues against Cleveland, J. Martin will be a sieve in the opener!!!!!!!!!

Well no shyt JT will be in the HOF...not a ground breaking announcement...when the Dolphins played the first game in London JT was the face of the damned thing!!! Remember the punt that stuck in the ground??? Classic!!!

Jt a first ballot hof

Watching deep fried masters on Destination channel.
I love me some deep fried lemonade and deep fried ribs.
Deep fried pumpkin pie yummy to.

long was awful in first game, entire line was

So the Cubs are doing a 500 mill stadium renovation WITHOUT A DIME of taxpayer charity funds!!

I'll say it again; Thomas should be moved to FB. He can not read blocking. He can hit a spot designated to him. He can catch and block. He has good size. He is a FB. His fumble problem emanates from him trying to make open field moves.

gotta say that I was shocked to see Jordan get so much time (and even to see him in the games actually) in the first 2 (meaningless) preseason games--whats up with that? He basically missed all/most of the first couple of weeks of camp, or didnt do meaningful work on the field at least, from what was being reported.......yet there he is in the game against Dallas, and then again vs the Jags--what sense does that make?--not sure who made that decision, but considering our prized 1st round pick just had major surgery in Feb, it doesnt sound like a good decision.

I find it very encouraging that the Dolphins are looking beyond just this season. This team has been very short sighted over the last 10 to 12 years and it created a situation that we are still digging out of.

One example is at DE. We have Cam Wake who is one of the best edge rushers in the NFL. But Cam is already 30. It would've been great to have got him when he was 22 or 24. Maybe Not though? He needed some development and many Miami fans are clueless and impatient about player development. But now the team has Olivier Vernon, Dion Jordan and Derrick Shelby who can be brought along and set us up on the edge for years to come.

Hell.. I'm even happy to see Pat Devlin getting some developmental work. Who knows where the road goes for Pat? But he could be a trading piece or a solid backup.. Who know? Delaware puts some good QB's into the NFL. And Pat was no slouch in school.

Miami is bring players up in the secondary now. Nolan Carrol has come a long way. If he learned to play as he practices he'll be a damned good CB or NB. Jones is a nice developmental product. And Miami has a couple other safeties back there they are working with. I still see Miami drafting a safety in the next year or two in a higher round.

Wide Outs and TE are building blocks... But it seems we can't develop a RT to save our azzzzez. I'd love to blame Ireland, but for God sake, there isn't an easier spot to play on the Offense then RT. Miami has 5 players who are prospects for that hole... Get one or develop one. I put that on Coaching at the assistant level.

I wouldn't sweat Dion Jordan. Taylor was a rail when he came to Miami. I remember most people said he was "Too Thin"... "Too Tall"... or just "Too" and they were wrong. Jordan needs time... he has the motor and the skill... he just needs the body development and the run technique worked on. He'll be a liability on anything but 3rd down until he can reliably set an edge.

Good Sense, I orefer Thomas be moved off the squad. He's pretty pathetic. Expecting him to either play well or stay healthy is unlikely.

I am not advocating his retaining. I hate him at RB. I think he has the makeup to be a FB. If we keep him at FB/ backup RB, this would nullify the need for the roster spot that the FB position fills.

Good post and yes the short sightedness of the franchise going back to 95 really when Huzienga tried to buy S.B. with Shula and you get the recipe for what has done us in more than anything. Add a decade of BLOWN drafts dating back to JJ handing reigns of franchise to BFF Wannstedt then Huzienga to Mueller,Saban,Spleiman/Cam,Fats Tuna and you get over a decade of futility! This is the 1st time since JJ scrapped team and built D through draft that you see a plan. Had Marino been younger or say JJ would have inherited Dolphins in 89 instead of Dallas we might have been won a few SB.'s in the ERA seems team also a day late and Dollar short to go with quick fix attempts.

I would like to interject an opinion about a player that I have doubts about whether or not we will retain him. The LB Robinson-a dark horse in this race- looks like a football player to me.
I think MLBers are born not made. To me, he is a MLB.

What about making a play for the loser of the Jets qb battle? Get Geno or Sanchez in here to push Tannehill. Moore isn't taking any team to the playoffs. Two franchises have learned that.

Ralph.

I would trade Tanny for Geno Smith in a heartbeat.

People laughed at Vince Young. Well Green Bay picked him up. Nobody is laughing now. You need to have confidence in your decisions and not worry about the media.

In reply to an earlier post by some racist....That punk Trayvon did stand his ground and wound eating a bullet!!! Lets leave the racism off of a sports blog!

Ralph....absolutely..they need to bring in a veteran who can compete for the starting job....if he is more game ready than T-Hill he starts, while the sophomore QB learns....if Tanny is more ready, then he starts, and we have an upgraded back-up...
...now just who that veteran would be is a whole other issue....but I agree with your premise....

Was watching Sports Final last night where they were discussing Camp battles on FOX. They're Finsider is Drew Rosenhaus who given 20 or so clients on team probably has better info. than just about anybody. He said Sturgis is a done deal, forget the leg it's as money situation (doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one) The other thing he said I happen to disagree with?

Stated the idea is keeping Gilleslee on final roster given draft investment while putting J.Grey on P.S. with D.Thomas as primary short yardage RB?? I would cut my losses with Thomas (or maybe keep given rookie salary $$$) but in this scenario would let both Lane and Rodriguez go with Clay pulling double duty and Miller, Grey, Thomas and Gilleslee as my week-1 depth chart, again could be waaaaaaay off here but feel Grey a keeper who plays tough and has shown good hands out of the backfield aside from playing and looking faster than Gilleslee. Thomas at this point makes team as insurance policy against these kids falling down the stretch of long NFL Season, JMHO?!

I'm not sure why there is so much negative talk about Daniel Thomas. I'll admit I had my doubts he would recover from the injury bug before training camp.

I feel like he is our most complete back right now and I thought he showed more quickness and vision against JAX than I believed he had in him. I also noticed that our pass protection improves when he is on the field.

I'm sure Rex Ryan feels the same way!

Guys,

The fact Geno Smith came on the field as early as he did with starting OL in game vs. Lions speaks volumes! He injures ankle and wound up taking all 1st team reps in 1st practice back! I watched that game's replay and Sancheez threw a tipical sanCHEEZ pick-6 to rookie DE Ansah with nobody wearing puke green in the area, it was GOD AWFUL! That said even if cut today Jets eat 9.3 Mil in DEAD CAP money, so he's a puke greener one more Yr. regardless of how it pans out with S.Fla.'s Smith (how did Randy Shannon and UM not recruit this kid??) No denying Smith's a talent but we'll see as NFL QB??

I think Rodriguez goes to the PS, with Miller, Thomas, and Gilislee as RB, and Grey the short yardage back, and Clay as TE/HB.....
....that would mean Lane is history, along with Carpenter....

...with Carpenter's cap money, along with Moore's, a veteran QB through trade would round out the Offensive backfield ....

LMFAO!!! VERY TRUE!

Thomas has never been tried at FB; I want to see it. I think it is a fit for him. He still remains an RB option if on the roster.

Going to watch replay of Rams Vs. Browns to judge Long's play this Pre-Season in Yr. he has alot to prove to NAY-SAYERS! Catch you guys after the 1st half of this one.

Posted by: Good Sense | August 12, 2013 at 11:51 PM

If you think about it, he is playing fullback when he lines up in the backfield on 4 WR sets.

I would actually like to see Clay line up as a RB in 4 WR sets to utilize his big play ability.

Woodshed...did u notice in the Jacksonville game..one series ...Keller did just that...lined up in the backfield in a h-back position, with the RB in the I slot behind T-Hill...at the snap , he slipped past Tackle into a pass pattern....but Tanny got pressured and had to elude the rush...

Guys watcing replay of Rams game and Long got thrown back into Bradford like a RAG-DOLL!!! On 1st posession REAL UGLY! Given the Browns are playing some nobody group of DE/OLB's in their 3/4 I'll take it as a BAD OMEN for the sweet heart Coach of a few on here Fisher!

The single back set can be viewed as a FB position. this does allow him to pick up the blitz, run the ball or get into his route. My point goes beyond this aspect to insinuate that he can carry the responsibilities in a two back set, which would include lead blocking, and this would negate the need for Lane or Rodrigues. This open roster spot could be very valuable.

Fisher is way too smart to join the circus in Miami.

Rams vs Browns was a good game to watch for a LT comparison. Notice how effortless Joe Thomas makes it look in pass protection. I never saw him let anyone by him or get taken off his feet. At this point, Long looks average. He gets beaten a few times and has to throw himself to the ground to buy extra time. He doesn't look any better or worse than Martin at this point in his career.
Joe Thomas however plays like a stud and Weeden goes 9-12 for the game.

Half-game this week for starters. Three-qtrs the following week.

Posted by: Buster | August 13, 2013 at 12:17 AM

Thanks, I'll have to rewatch that series. Honestly, I'd like to see plays with Clay, Keller and Sims on the field near the goal line. Just Imagine all the looks you could give a defense with that combination.

D Thomas as a fb? ROTFLMAO............
Clay at fb? Still ROTFLMAO............

Exactly what down would you do it as an OC? You're fooling no one on a run or passing down. Neither are great run blockers, so you compromise your run game on running downs.

You definitely aren't fooling the defense to your intentions on passing downs.

How about you guys let the guys who are "EXPERIENCED" OC's and make the "big bucks" to do so, handle where a player should play and under what situations.

Jordan, another Ireland bust !

Woodshed,

What do you mean when you say you would like to see that grouping of players play "NEAR THE GOALINE"?

As an offense, "INSIDE THE 5Y LINE", best case scenario you want to be able to run the ball in, not pass. When you do pass this close in, you want to do it as a ploy to keep the defense off balance, not because your run game cant get the job done.

I mistakenly thought the children had gone to bed.

2 Places on the playing field you don't want to try and get to exotic in the run or pass game:

1. Inside your own 20
2. Inside of the opponents 20.

These are very common areas for pic 6's and fumble td's occur for defenses.....
