Defense has to resolve issues vs. Saints

NEW ORLEANS -- It won't all be about offense tonight when the Dolphins play the Saints. This game will put a spotlight on Miami's defense as well.

And the Dolphins D has issues it has to address and overcome if the good guys are going to win tonight.

The issues?

Injuries is one. As we speak the Dolphins are hopeful Cameron Wake can play against New Orleans -- at least on passing downs. The team will not know for certain about Wake until a couple of hours before game time as that's when trainers and doctors will put Wake through a pre-game workout to see if he's capable of holding up despite his sprained knee.

Do not be surprised if Derrick Shelby starts for the Dolphins regardless of whether Wake is active or not. If Wake is not active, Shelby might get 50-60 plays. If Wake is active, Shelby might get 30-35 snaps.

The Dolphins are also uncertain about the status of defensive tackle Paul Soliai. His chances of playing are much lower than Wake's. As of this weekend, Soliai had not been cleared to play. Once again, pregame will help determine Soliai's availability. I doubt he plays. But he wants to play.

The secondary will be challenged again today and perhaps more than they've been all season. Yes, Miami faced good quarterbacks in Andrew Luck and Matt Ryan earlier this season without cornerback Dimitri Patterson. Drew Brees is better. He's more accurate. He's more experienced.

And Miami has issues in matching up with New Orleans receivers -- particularly tight end Jimmy Graham -- while also being without Patterson for the third consecutive game.

This has to be a big game for Nolan Carroll, Jimmy Wilson and R.J. Stanford. You might wonder about the rookies -- Will Davis and Jamar Taylor. My opinion is they help on special teams but tonight is not the time to introduce them to NFL action.

Week 4: Miami Dolphins vs New Orleans Saints Preview and Predictions

w.atch.me/72747M

7th!

Here's my counter-intuitive (i.e. wish) reason why Soliai not playing could wind up being a positive, follow me:

Soliai doesn't play. That improves the chances the Saints can run on us. ANY Saints run is a win for Miami because it means it's one less pass (and a chance for Brees to burn us). So the more success Saints have in running, the more they run, which burns the clock and gives us a chance to keep up with them offensively. Also, it hides the fact our best pass-rusher might be out of the game. And also camouflages (for 1 play at least) our lack of depth in our secondary. Thus, this provides Miami with a chance for last minute or 4th quarter heroics/comebacks/snatching a win from the jaws of defeat.

IF it goes down like this, the game ball should be given to Soliai (which is ironic since he won't have played in this game).

Watch Geno Smith perform his own version of the butt fumble:

Darren Sproles maybe the guy to fear most on Saints offense outside of Drew Brees. Very fast, very elusive, and a nightmare to cover out of the backfield.

And on my fantasy team (along with Charles Clay).

DC....nice thought, but if the Saints establish a running game this only set up Brees for the deep ball to Colston.

Soliai is the heart of our D line and he often swallows up two O linemen during running plays. He is an irreplaceable BEAST.

I don't want him rushed back into action, only to lose him for the season...we are a playoff caliber team and need him healthy.

Problem is...Brees knows we are vulnerable up the middle with him out, so watch for Brees to run up the middle and use play action to pick apart our secondary who is minus Patterson.

I still predict a hard fought, high-scoring game with Sturgis kicking a game winner at the buzzer: Fins win 27-24

yeah, no better o than n o's to fix the phinz d.
lol

Not concern about Graham having big numbers. Just as long as those numbers don't include tds. Gonzalez had 149yds 2tds receiving against Pats lastnight. But, by games end, on what would have been the go ahead and game winning drives for the Falcons. Bellichik had 2 red zone defenders jamming Gonzalez at the line, totally taking Gonzalez out of the play.

This is a ploy Coyle should consider anytime the Saints are in the redzone.

DC Dolfan, I am thinking the same though even w/ Soliai playing. Either way we need to defend pass first and concede the run in other words. That way, hopefully, they slit their own throats by helping us run the clock. Our runners/receivers need to stay in bounds and let's win this thing.

We have handled Sproles well in the past

Not while Drew Brees was his qb.

Sproles s so small, by the time the defense finds him, he's already running by them. He's a nightmare cover for lb's too.

Hmmm, thinking the opposite...Soliai and heavy on 3-4. Which brings up another point: It's been discussed Coyle getting cute with stunts. Which I have agreed with. Let's hope Philbin can reel Coyle in. Use the strength of this D....more straight up, less stunts

UConn fired our former defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni today. Wasn't he responsible for building some of our paper defenses during the Marino era?

Sam, short answer, no

olivedotti

Pasqualbaloney was a Parcells project

Olivadotti, that's right! I knew it was Italian, but remember Pasqualoni being as crap dc too.

Should have said one of the many failed Parcells projects

Good thing about those teams was the Over/Under betting line that hovered in the mid-forty's..

quick poll...who will get the game ball in tonights win:

Ryan Tannehill
Mike Wallace
Lamar Miller
Brian Hartline
Dion Jordan
Dannell Ellerbe
Brent Grimes
Caleb Sturgis

Pressure, pressure, pressure, pressure. Get into Drew's face early, knock him down a few times give him more pressure, if we get 2 turnovers albeit special teams or defense and we might just take this game and shock and awe will ensue. Steal this game phins, then and only then the respect will come out from all of these haters.

Grimes will have the game ball tonight

If everything goes right, Mike Wallace

DC....

I haven't left the MVA area yet....I am going to a school in MO...and I will be here till about the 1st of NOV...thus my sporadic posting during one o0f the better strech runs of the FINS in recent years...

I'll be back in the area the beginning of NOV...then soon after...off to Germany (before 1 DEC)for 3 years....so there you have it...

Armando...

I agree....about the defense....I think with WAKE our chances are even...without him (and thus zero pass rush)...I HEAD gives the edge to the Saints...but my heart will ALWAYS makem the FINS the favorite....

3rd 1 from the top.
lol

where's aloco?
lol

Armondo or some of you stat regulars... is it just me or do the Phins, now built for speed look even better/faster on turf? I also see Jordan having a breakout game. He reminds me of a young Peppers or Javone Kearse the freak? Like to see L. Miller and Sherman model his game after Faulk. Although hurt up front on D line. I'm thinking getting the youngsters health at corner will be huge. Anyone else a little disappointed on R. Jones play/efforg at safety?

Go Phins!

2 watt...

your not even a fan...

0-5...remember

or was it 1-4...

doesn't matter...

cause the fact is were 30- BIACH.....

lol

Good luck to you Kris. My wife just got back from a trip to Germany, she loved it. Everything is real clean over there, people are nice (of course the beer is excellent). You're a Dolphins fan, so the best ambassador Americans can hope for!

sorry...typo....

I meant to say...

3-0...BIACH...

my bad....

Thanks DC...

but I still have 60 days (give or take) of stateside time left...and I plan on enjoying it...don't rush me out man.... :)

I have been to Germany before...and had the time of my life....my only regret this time will be...not being single over there...@ least I have the memories of years past...

*typo city on my last post. Thumb typing on phone...

I think simple is better in sports its all about execution. This isnt NASA and it isnt a controlled enviroment like a lab where you control almost everything so you can increses complexity without compromising execution.
My two keys to the game on offense.I am a pass first advocate with the status quo of the 2013 Dolphins but I will take what the defense will give me and if the Dolphins have their best running game in this 4 game season I will take it.
On defense Brees is excellent when blitzed so I wont rely on the blitz to pressure him let him beat my pass coverage at their strongest. If coyle has any stunt strategies that havent been used NOW IS THE TIME to find out just how talented the depth of my defensive pass rushers are and I wont blitz Brees much but I will move around a lot and fake blitzes and hopefully unveil my NEW stunts with the defensive line.

Hope your kid likes Spatzle and bratwurst.

If we win, then plan on seeing Denver in the AFC Championship game. After we beat up on the Pats twice this year (with no Wilfork...YES!!!).

If anybody is going to win the Game tonight for us is the same one that has won our 3 Games for us this Season, Tannehill. As Tannehill goes, so will we.

Everyone should read Daniel Tosh's timeline on twitter. He is a huge Dolphin fan is talking mad crap about the Saints, here is one tweet. If you liek I reccomend reading all of them

daniel tosh ‏@danieltosh 26m

i will be personally financing 'bounties' for tonight's game. #goDolphins

DC...

She is so young...she eats whatever we are eating....evrything thing is good to her as long as its not comming out of a baby food jar (so grown)...

and the other one isn't here yet...due in mid febuary..So shinticzel...and Fries with MAYO will be all she knows...

moron coconut is soliais nik name .
lol

I don't know, the Dolphins have beat LV's spread all 3 Games this Season, why not a fourth? I'm breaking my head to see why NO is a 7 point favorite(besides the Superdome advantage) and I can't see it. Unless they stop Tannehill cold.

DC Dolfan,

Your wife sure seemed to enjoy her time with me. She was nice and clean too. Says you'd rather watch men in tight pants chase after a pigskin than watch her...

She got her fill of German bratwurst...that's for sure.

Saints 67 Sea World 5

FIRE ROSS, so YOU were the "toothpick" she was referring to. Please meet up with her again, every time she comes home from you she acts like I'm John Holmes.

DC Dolfan gets points for a good comeback lol.

Armando has issues with his aversion to heterosexuality

LOL!

Daniel Tosh ROCKS!

I love that gu.......er........ah.......

Daniel Tosh ROCKS!

It could be our toughest challenge in the whole season. But we can win this game nonetheless. Go DOLPHINS!!!!!

Continually amazed by these so-called experts on TV. Tim Hasselbeck on NFL Live just said: Miami doesn't want to get in a shootout with NO. What does he think is going on? Has he watched ANY Dolphin games this year. The black guy (X Steeler?) was right though...rush has to NOT come from the ends but through the middle

Oscar said it at 3:32.

We'll go as far as Tannehill takes us!

That's the way it's going to be tonight anyway. We have to pick up right where we left off last week. And I do mean RIGHT WHERE WE LEFT OFF.

We can't start slow. We have to have the same mindset we had on the last drive from last week. That's the next step in our evolution. We have to start strong, no mistakes and take it too Em.

We have to play like our first drive is our last! Every possession, every drive, every snap, every play, etc, etc.......

"The Perfect Storm" 3-0 Baby!!!!

(It's only wierd if it doesn't work....)

It's all about stopping the saints high powered offense , we must make it hard on Drew Bree's hit him hard and often knock him off his mark and limit them to short gains

We can win this game we have the talent

Fantasy Advice:

Brandon Gibson or Pierre Thomas?

If you can rub that stain off Drew Brees face (Tosh)
LMAO

I will be personally financing 'bounties' for tonights game (Tosh)
