Dion Jordan's debut vs. Cleveland

The question about Dion Jordan much of this preseason was not how he'd be used against the Cleveland Browns in the rookie's NFL debut but, indeed, whether he'd be used at all based on his uncertain injury status.

That question has been answered. Jordan, nursing a tender shoulder much of the preseason, is playing in the Dolphins regular-season opener.

So now we want to know how much. And here are some answers based on interviews with players and coaches.

Expect Jordan on some special teams and on the field with the defense on some passing downs.

None of this is a surprise but what seems uncommon is the Dolphins may use Jordan in something similar to the New York Giants NASCAR pass-rush grouping of years past. Although Jordan is the backup to Olivier Vernon and plays the same position as both Vernon and Cameron Wake, it is possible the Dolphins want to use the pass-rush skills of all three players.

Together.

In the same pass-rush package.

So the Dolphins could include Jordan, Wake and Vernon -- three defensive ends considered Miami's best pass-rushers -- on the field and rushing the passer at the same time.

I'm told there might even be moments when the Dolphins have four defensive end types chasing Cleveland quarterback Brandon Weeden because linebacker and former defensive end Koa Misi might get in on the act as well.

How exactly the Dolphins would deploy this group of rushers has yet to be seen in 2013 -- not in practices open to the media or fans, not in training camp, not in preseason games -- so I cannot account for how much or little this might be used nor can I account for how the Dolphins would line up. (And even if I had seen it, I wouldn't report it anyway).

If the Dolphins go forward with this plan, it is good news at least on its face. There's been much speculation and hand wringing among fans whether the Miami coaching staff could find a way to maximize its talent at defensive end.

This is also good news because this grouping suggests a better pass rush.

But there are other ramifications because it likely means one of the down linemen will not be playing in a familiar four-point stance. It suggests someone will have to rush from a two-point stance (standing up).

The idea also may mean the Dolphins sacrifice pass rush up the middle for more pressure from the edge.

Defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle hinted earlier in camp that if Jordan was physically ready to play, there would be a package to include him in the game plan. He doubled down on that this week.

"We haven’t made any final decisions yet," Coyle said on Monday. "Today he got a good number of reps in practice, so we are excited about that. At the end of the week, we’ll really feel better able to judge exactly where he’s at, but he’s going to have a significant role in the game plan this week, I can guarantee you that."

Jordan's role on defense is expected to be limited almost exclusively to passing situations while his gifts on special teams seem suited for kickoff coverage and perhaps punt return and field goal block situations.

Jordan is quick enough and fast enough to run down on kickoffs. He's long and athletic enough to possibly block a field goal. He's strong enough to block on punt returns. Just saying.

Jordan worked on the kickoffs team early in camp and coach Joe Philbin has defended the idea of having valuable players -- including the first-round draft pick -- on special teams.

"We'll have starters on special teams," Philbin said Wednesday.

"It’s a critical play in football, the coverage, we’re going to use whoever we feel is going to be the best to help us pin the opponent down," Philbin said Monday. "Whoever that may be."

When he was asked about Jordan specifically on special teams this week, Philbin was coy about it but couldn't bring himself to dismiss the idea because, well, the guy's on teams and this coach doesn't lie.

“We think we have a chance to be a very, very good special teams unit," Philbin said. "We want to utilize our personnel in the best way possible. If he is on one of those teams, then we’ve come to the conclusion that is going to help that particular phase of special teams."

o yeah

Mr Salguero you have waited patiently all week long with fillers(ranking of starting Qbs)to spring this one on us.I think you didnt just find this out you already knew about it, and waited to spring this story onto the blog the last day of the week.
I would guess that the NASCAR package would probably only be used in situations that were obvious passing downs 3rd and 20 etc, because once the opposing QB sees who is in he could audible to a screen or a draw play.
If this package works well against the run then that will really help, because they could use the same players and change the formations, and where they line up because these players are hybrids that can play defensive end or linebacker.

Thanks Mando. Great post.

1st round draft choice on special teams lol
This franchise needs an exorcism

That would be killer. Of course you are not going to put DJ as a wedge buster but with his height and athleticism, he might be able to help rushing the punter on punt returns and on field goal attempts.

Welcome to Club Mando!

where the only handwringing was made by people such as myself.

Hey, whatever works! This guy has a skill set no one has. Get him on the field often as possible.

Worried they'll do to him what they did with Jake Long. Play him injured and cause permanent damage. Now Big Jake is nowhere near what he used to be after only 5 seasons in the league.

Tom Hartman, and you know this how. Morris Claborne, played ST, Mark Baron played ST,Luke Cuechly played ST,Bruce Irvin played ST, Shea McClellin played ST, Nick Perry played ST, Coug Martin plated ST part of the season, Andrea Branch played ST. YOu know what each of these players have in common Tom, they are all 2012 1st round draft choice. Tom I see you're another know nothing poster.

The entire Ireland's regime hinges on what DJ can do. It is truly an enigma what this Phins team truiy is. But make no mistake, nothing short of playoffs -in an awful AFC- and a good display of the rook -and no chronic injury to speak of- are the only thing that can save the GM this time.

Taking away a QB's time to throw with a great pass rush is a great way to fight the high octane offenses of today's NFL. That said the Dolphins will have to get the offense going also to win in today's NFL.

That Denver did a # on the Ravens does not automatically mean that we can do the same to them. Lookout!

Oscar,

The NFL effected the "wedge rule" in 2009, which bans any wedge formation comprised of more than two players. So no player is used as a "wedge buster." However, the use of Dion Jordan on special teams is scary nonetheless.

Dashi...

My hats off to you this morning....

Denver ver Ravens in and old-fashioned butt kicking...not even close...

7 TD passes from Manning...and my bold prediction was that he would fall off a cliff (professionally) this year....

Its still a LONG season...and one game does NOT a SB champion make...

but for today...

"Kings to you"

signed,
The Count of Monte Cristo (2002)

Great movie if you haven't seen it...I have watched it several times...HIGHLY RECOMMEND it....

A good QB will recognize it and can burn you with a short pass in the flat. LBs have to be sharp.

Kris,

Very upset at you this morning. Your pessimism yesterday got me thinking. Then after watching the Ravens fans come in to work all glum today, I'm starting to get nervous. I don't want to feel that way Monday morning. I must have erased the feeling I felt 9 times last year. Miami BETTER realize teams come to PLAY, EVERY week, and no game is given. They need to be ready, they need to start fast, they need to PERFORM!!!

You chronic loser type supposed Fin fans make me sick. I'm tired of your spinning everything as some sort of bash on the franchise and Ireland. Our decade long run of bad luck was karma for the 30 year run of unparalleled winning! We're the frickin' Miami Dolphins! Get on the bus or get the hell outta the way!
And for all we know DJ's on special teams to block field goals exclusively! ("but gee you never know he coulda woulda shoulda") Shut the futch up already!

DC....

Take what I post with a grain of salt...

I thought the Ravens would beat the Broncos by 10...I thought Maning was on his last legs....

Its gonna be hard to defend Flacco this week...lol...

So I take Solace in being wrong yesterday....maybe it is a good thing....maybe I am wrong about everything I said about Tanne....maybe he comes out Sunday and sticks his middle finger in mye eye as well....

After that Ravens loss last DC....I kinda feel better about the whole season....cause apperantly I don't know Jack.....

BTW...

I would LOVE to listen to some 105.7 radio riht now...I know Ravens fans...and right about now...they are on the FIRE RVERYBODY wagon....and I am sure Ray Lewis just went from demi-god status...to full blown ZEUS....

"Jordan worked on the kickoffs team early in camp and coach Joe Philbin has defended the idea of having valuable players -- including the first-round draft pick -- on special teams." Wow... Philbin wouldn't be the first HC to do this, and wouldn't be the first to be fired if it backfires.

Dam u Peyton Manning and dam u Denver defense for dropping that pick six running into the end zone, u idiot!!!

yes, I have the Denver defense in FF

Kris, the movie Count of Monte Cristo sucksed. bastardiz@tion of a great classic novel. Read the book, unabridged version. You'll spit on the movie afterwards.

Dolphins players are so awesomely talented that the third player chosen in the draft will mostly be on special teams. This type of team strength top to bottom is the result of the personnel genius of Jeff Ireland. Those who have criticized Jeff Ireland or called for his firing must be eating their words. If the Dolphins didn't have such a difficult schedule, I would even bet they have a winning record this year. As it is, anything better than 4-12 would be a huge validation of Jeff Ireland's personnel moves.

Philbin wouldn't be the first HC to do this, and wouldn't be the first to be fired if it backfires.

Posted by: Millions | September 06, 2013 at 09:01 AM

Please name a head coach that got fired because of it.

One solution to having all four will be mnoving Vernon inside like Justin Tuck was very efffective at for the Giants. Vernon is the one guy with a load of power among the DEs.

Man what if Manning had become a Dolphins we instantley would be Super Bowl contenders, wonder if we were his second choice?? Anyways he looks like same ole Peyton Manning, also the Ravens will suffer this year without there emotional leaders Lewis and Reed, thats good news for us! If we cant beat the Browns the season will not look promissing

Yeah Kris, I was talking to some co-workers yesterday (Ravens fans) who were positive, absolutely SURE they would win. I was trying to tell them, "in Denver, Manning-led offense, new faces on the Ravens D, Mile High stadium." But they didn't want to listen. Now they're saying they won't even make the Playoffs.

How things change on a dime in the NFL.

Everything's all good people, Greg Cote's predicting we make the Playoffs!

I'm normally quite an optimistic critic of the Miami Dolphins. However, this morning I'm just a critic. This post reminds me too much of how the Dolphins viewed Ted Ginn Jr.: Special teams, adds team speed, brings multiple dynamics to the field on downs with obvious pass plays.

I understanding they play vastly different positions...just too many similarities for me.

Truth, I wanted Peyton too. I don't think he ever wanted to be a Dolphin though. The lure of working with Elway was just too strong. Think he would've become a niner before a Dolphin.

They're not playing Jordan on special teams... it's a ruse.

Out of the top 10 picks all are starters accept for clevlands mingo and st louis' austin and az cooper (injured). Miami trades up for a second string injury proned dion jordan thats not staring opening day. teeerific Jeff!!!!

Clutt & Watkins solid pick-ups by Ireland this week.

Hey Mark, forget to tell you. You can remove me from the FF, I wasnt able to make the draft because I couldnt log in, it was my fault I typed my email address wrong and couldnt log in (I know just dumb). Im pissed cause I was looking forward to it

Mcrunner34

I had the same thought, but then I realized Ginn was far more valuable...I haven't heard about Jordan's family being part of any package deal.

(And now for a more serious response)
I'm just happy he will be active.
Realistically I wouldn't have expected a bigger role Sunday, because he hasn't earned a bigger role.
Hopefully the Fins can get out to a lead, create obvious passing downs and give him a chance to flash, in the situation where he should currently be most comfortable/have the most value.

Truth, I don't think I can delete you now. You don't want to manage the team it drafted for u?

Yeah Aldon Smith wasn't a starter season one either for the niners. I bet they regret that draft pick. Wish the trolls would at least be clever and relevant in their tauntings.

Much better book, the movie is a little disappointing if you read the book before hand.

I think Denver had revenge on their minds last night. No reason to keep running the no huddle in the shotgun throwing the ball everywhere late when the game was already decided. They could have run the clock but, chose to run it up.

Teams & players take notice of tactics like that. Not saying I thought it was wrong but, people notice when you do things like that. Coming from a conservative guy like John Fox, it was a lil surprising to see him keep his foot on the gas like that.

As for the Ravens, I don't think it mattered if it was Manning or someone else. The ravens are simply less talented than they were. They lost their defense. It is a shell of what it was. No Lewis, Ellerbe, Williams, Reed...

Cincy is clearly tops in their division & the ravens will be fighting with the Steelers to hover around .500.

If there was ever a year where the playoffs were realistic, this is the year. A Wildcard at minimum. It all hinges on the oline & Tanny.

Excited for Sunday!

f4l, a little is an understatement.

I was actually offended by the movie, personally

Mando states he doesn't know how this D formation will look?? We've posted about it (speculated) AD NAUSEAM here since the day after the draft! You could go with a front-4 of Wake, Starks, Odrick and Vernon with DJ at SOLB and Wheeler across or switch with Misi at SOLB and DJ at WOLB.

You could also bring in Shelby at LDE and line Wake up at WOLB with DJ on the Strongside. In these types of exotic packages you can keep Ellerbee or Wheeler on the field as the lone true LB ect.... Again we discussed and speculated it to death after the draft. Our talent dictates this thinking and to tell everybody the truth I've been waiting for the Reg. Season to start in large part to see just how Coyle would use his pieces.

Didn't want to be that hard on Kris.

Ok, some people need to get a grip. Our #1 pick isn't starting day 1, OMG, the house is on fire, the house in on fire. Lift your skirts up girls, it's not the end of the world. The guy was INJURED! I'm not a doctor, but I've heard somewhere that when players are injured, they eventually HEAL and become healthy. This isn't Jared Odrick who missed the entire year. This is MAYBE a game (not even since they aren't saying he won't play, just won't start).

And so what if he plays on special teams. Would you rather we play our scrubs on special teams and either have bad field position or give up a TD? As long as he's helping the team, I'm not worried about a ROOKIE playing ST (even our #1 pick). Damn, I know trannies are in but this blog has a bunch of them, like grapes in Sonoma.

For those screaming about how hard the schedule is for the dolphins maybe it just got a little easier with Baltimore looking like crap.

Mark, I cant log into NFL.com with my orginal credentials because when I signed up I inputed a wrong email address and dont remember my username I signed up with. I believe it was Truth with some numbers after that but cant remember the exact numbers. So when I go to forget password in NFL.com it asked me for my email address I signed up with. I enter the email I thought I signed up with but I get a "This email isnt on file with NFL.com" therefore not allowing me to log in.. This is how I figured I must of inputted the wrong email address when I signed up.. I know it was dumb. LOL

Truth,

I dont know if this helps, but your username is Truth86

I run a league on yahoo & it allows you to transfer teams to different email address. Doesn't yours have the same option?

Guy in my league has Manning & Thomas. Suffice to say the other teams in my league are seeing the writing on the wall and are nervous after just the 1st game of the season!

I'm shaking my fist at you rdubs with your garbage time 78 yard td reception and my defensive guy doing his best Leon Lett impersonation ... now I remember why i stopped playing this mess.

I get mad at the most insignificant things now ...

Mark,

LMAO..... I was so mad when he returned the interception for a TD.Then I saw the replay and was laughing my butt off. How did you like that meaningless 76 or so yard TD at the end of the game?

Rdubs BINGO!!!! I remember coming to the blog, asking Dashi and YG my username and they couldnt tell me, I thought it was the most basic question yet no one could tell me. Thanks

My team kind of stinks, guess Ill make the best out of it. Cam Newton my starter, Trent Richardson my starter. Pats Defense. Jeez Im going to hate starting Richardson this week against the Dolphins

Truth, I looked it up, I can remove your ownership from a team but I need to have a new one to add. You want to create a new profile and send me that email info?

ok, cool, so u can manage now.

And rdubs, those fickle fantasy gods ... geez... 21 point swing on those two plays.

Dominating performance by the Broncos last night. I got a good chunk of points from Welker. I think I'm playing DC this week.

Jordan should be able to make an impact this week. Looking for our D to shut them down and the offense to make a good chunk of plays to win.

Mark, were all good now, Rdubs was able to give me my username, I remebered the password, Im in the league, looking over the team in depth its pretty decent.
Cam Newton QB, WR's Dez Bryant, Victor Cruz, RB Trent Richardson

I think Denver had revenge on their minds last night. No reason to keep running the no huddle in the shotgun throwing the ball everywhere late when the game was already decided. They could have run the clock but, chose to run it up.

??? THEY NEARLY LET BALTIMORE BACK IN THIS GAME BY TRYING TO RUN IT OUT MID-4TH QRT.

As for the Ravens, I don't think it mattered if it was Manning or someone else. The ravens are simply less talented than they were. They lost their defense. It is a shell of what it was. No Lewis, Ellerbe, Williams, Reed...

RAVENS WERE IN THIS ONE FOR A HALF THEN LOOKED UTTERLY FATIGUED IN THE 2ND. SURPRISED ME CAUSE HARBAUGH'S TEAM IS USUALLY ONE OF YOUR BETTER TEAMS OUT OF THE BLOCKS.

Cincy is clearly tops in their division & the ravens will be fighting with the Steelers to hover around .500.

I'VE BEEN SAYING IT AS WELL THIS TO ME COULD BE THE DARKHORSE TEAM IN THE AFC.

Posted by: LOL | September 06, 2013 at 09:53 AM

SOME GOOD POINTS SO I THOUGHT I'D DROP MY $0.02!

Truth,

The sad is thing is I went all over the league trying to e-mail it, email myself, clicking on everything. I dont know why I was so determined. Maybe I just knew how much you were looking forward to it. I think your team is pretty good though.

Truth, in all honesty, the rankings on NFL.com were pretty good and closely resembled the order most people live were picking. Your team might've been slightly different if you wer live I'm sure but they still did a good job in drafting.

So how many people here DON'T have a waiver claim out there for Julius Thomas now?? HAHAHA!
