Dolphins CBs hurting? No problem vs. Browns

I was talking to someone who has been around the Cleveland Browns for 20 years this week and the conversation turned to that team's passing game.

"They have four wide receivers," he said, "and three are slow."

That's the reason when the injury report came out Friday and it had starting cornerback Dimitri Patterson listed as questionable with an ankle injury, and rookies Will Davis (toe) and Jamar Taylor (groin) listed as out, I didn't exactly flinch.

If the Dolphins were playing Atlanta or Denver or any other team with a capable receivers corps, this week would be trouble. But, with all due respect to the Browns, they should not be trouble.

The Browns won't have their most talented receiver Josh Gordon on Sunday because he is suspended by the NFL. That means Davone Bess, who was acquired in trade to be the slot receiver, is now promoted to starter alongside Greg Little, who becomes the No. 1 WR.

Little is a solid player who caught 53 passes in 2012. But he doesn't intimidate with size and speed like Gordon does.

The Browns don't look capable of challenging the Dolphins deep. Indeed, their only deep threat is former University of Miami player Travis Benjamin, who is better known for returning punts and kickoffs than catching passes.

By the way, the Dolphins are hopeful Patterson will indeed be active and play, barring a setback. So even that situation is not as bad as it seems.

Bottom line?

If the Dolphins were opening at Indianapolis against the Colts -- the opponent next week -- instead of at Cleveland, there would be major reason for concern. The Colts can throw the ball and boast multiple big-play and deep-threat options.

But the Colts come aren't the opponent. They're opening against the Browns. The Browns don't have that kind of talent.

So it's not as bad as it seems.

DD,

Reason Marshall got cut.

B.Grimes
D.Patterson
N.Carroll
J.Taylor
W.Davis
J.Wilson

All are better CBs than Marshall. Most teams only carry 5 CBs. We have to move J.Wilson to safety to just carry 5.

DD,

It's called "back injury". Kept him out nearly all season(2012). Back injuries are funny, just when you think its gone away it re-emerges without warning.

Back injuries never seem to 100% heal. At any point this season it could have come back.

Now throw in, Ireland drafts two corners, 1 to become a starter(Taylor 2nd rd). You don't draft a corner 2nd rd to backup or sit the bench.

So, with both Marshall and Patterson each having contracts right at 5 million, the writing was on the wall draft day that the loser in this battle in camp would be on the outs.

If you thought Manning was making history with 7 TDs Thursday night, you haven't seen anything yet.

Tannehill will make his own history on sunday with the ultimate team humility with 7 ints against the superior browns defense.

Don't miss out on this day of shame and disgrace for the Miami dolphins.

The road to infamy begins....

Patterson will be next to go. By next season, Taylor or Davis will be the starter. Ireland absolutely not going to pay Patterson 5 million to be "quality depth".

He'll be difficult to trade because teams know he'll be let go anyway. Might be tradable if Ireland doesn't ask more than a 5th rd'er max.

Ball game

Brady Quinn > TanneBust

Game over...............................

Strip sack Canes ball inside Gators 10. Gators will have to put Canes/Gator game on shelf again.

Canes still the better team. No "Gator Day" in Miami this time around..................................

The U is Back!!

Icing of the cake by The U. Duke Johnson TD.............

Don't forget to catch Miamis all new Fumbling by Committee backfield on Sunday as well featuring Daniel Thomas and Lamar Miller s your go to butterfingers in action.

Where will you be when Miami strikes winless for the season??!!!

The Road to 0-16 is upon us

This game aint over boys

Great drive by Gators. Terrible coverage by U secondary.

The U is Back!!

Both of you are IDIOTS!

The U wins.

YIKES TAKES A HIKE....................................

IDIOT

YIKES TAKES A HIKE. CANES WIN..........................

Yikes is a gator fan.

Cry all you want you dickswallower.

The U handled that ass today.

Which is more remarkable:

A Miami football teams wins in Joe Robbie.

Or

Joe Robbie actually having a full house

I expect the Hurricanes make the Top 25 next week. At least #25.

I don't know, but we put some kind of hurt on that UF QB.

How'bout drafting Teddy Bridgewater?

If Phillip rivers couldn't have a breakout season with norv Turner theres no wayweeden can ppl r idiots

Well ETF.... U aint looking to good....1 down, 1 to go....
Looks like a beautiful weekend.....I just got off work....time to collect $$$

Bridgewater will go #1

Bridgewater has the softest schedule in NCAA. He's very hard to judge but looks good.

But HaHa, first Oscar said RG3 ain't worth trading up for, now he wants Bridgewater.
You guys are clowns!!!

All you bumbs said RG3 will be a bust and a project, now what?

Samr losers that called RG3 a bust are the same people calling Jordan a bust.

You guys look dumber and dummer every day.

HOW BOUT THEM CANES?

Johnny Manziel is the best QB to come out of college in the last decade.

The Canes will be top 20 at least. Also agreed on Patterson. Can't afford to pay him 5 million next year unless he is great. They will cut him and put the money towards Grimes.

I'm thrilled the Canes won but Stephen Morris and Duke Johnson both looked terrible. Both way overrated.

If the Fish can't beat the Browns, there's NO WAY they have a winning record this year. This game should be a gimme for a decent team. Come on.....it's the Browns!

loser trolls @ 3:54

I don't get it, how am I looking bad?

Dashe moron was comparng Duke Johnson with BARRY SANDERS!! lol

Cry all you want you dickswallower.

daShe still obsessed with swallowing. Of course with no education and no vocabulary, he has no other recourse but to argue like a ghetto teenager.

The Dullfins are gonna have a losing record whether they beat the Browns or not.

Dashi gets his drivers license next year. Then he wont be on the blog 24/7.

Memo to Solai and Starks you guys are some of my favorite players... but maybe a new agent would be a good idea. That guy is a classless egotistical jerk.

Why are people predicting that Tannehill, Geno Smith and EJ manuel will all fail this year?
I don't get it.

One thing players have to know...fans never side with parasitic agents that do their negotiating through the social media. It makes players look greedy and stupid.

dadsmithwest,

You have to play tough to get a fair deal from Cheapskate Ross.

I am glad the fins are flying under the radar this year, only time will tell for sure, but I believe we are set at corner for years to come, need to sign Grimes to a 5 yr contract if he stays healthy. The new logo may lull opposing teams to sleep thinking we are GAY and pansies. the defense is top 5 for sure, the offense will struggle a bit at first so as long as the ball is taen care of and keep the turnovers to a minimum we will win 10 games this year nd possibly the afc east. Patriots are over rated this year, I picked them to lose the opener against the Blls.Bottom line is nobody knows nothing about anybody right now, anybody who says otherwise is just simply foolish.

Newsflash. The Pats have released AJ Francis...time to scoop that guy up Mr. Ireland! That kid looked good this preseason.

DD,

We'll disagree on why Marshall was ut. As far as I'm concerned it was all about money. As fans we should be pissed off about that.

Dashi,

There's no evidence to suggest that Nolan Carroll was better than Marshall. To me that's a ridiculous statement. They got rid of Davis a year ago and Marshall was the starter (notice I said Marshall NOT Carroll). If not for the back injury he would have continued to start. Carroll's never a starter in this league. When camp opened this year, Marshall was again the starter. Only recently was he passed by Patterson. He was chopped because of the money he made. He was picked up almost immediately by the Chargers.

As far as Taylor and Davis are concerned, neither you nor I have a clue what the team has in these two guys yet. It's too early to say they'll be good players. They've played parts of pre-season games so far. Next to nothing to go by.

I said it at the time and I'll say it again. Bad decision to get rid of Marshall.

bad axe,

You have to be kidding us. Fins under the radar?

Being the biggest spenders in fa alone painted a HUGE BULLSEYE on our underwater mammal backs. You only kid yourself if think every team we play doesn't want to make Ross' fa spending blow up in his face.

Bellichik will being trying to paste 50pts on us in both meetings this year. Under the radar? It will be more like "UNDER THE GUN".

BET IT ON VEGAS......................................

Newsflash. The Pats have released AJ Francis...time to scoop that guy up Mr. Ireland! That kid looked good this preseason.

Uhhhh................. Belichick cut him?

Name one player Bellichik cut that went on to nfl stardom? Cant, can you?

ENUFF SAID.................................

Let me get this straight. We should be pissed off because as far as your concerned, based on nothing more than your fantasy women's intuition, it was about money?

Sure, right, uh huh.

No way it could be performance or lingering injury?

I'm thrilled the Canes won but Stephen Morris and Duke Johnson both looked terrible. Both way overrated.

The Offense hasn't adjusted to the loss of OC Jed Ficsh who took his talents to Chicago's NFL Bears. Ficsh did more last Yr. with S.Morris than I thought possible. Before Ficsh I wasn't HIGH on Morris to be perfectly honest. Yes good arm and very good athlete but streaky passer. He seems to struggle with the underneath routes (timing/accuracy) Ficsh whose an up-n-coming OC/QB Coach broke Morris down in 2012 and re-worked his fundamentals. Then on gameday went with Morris's strength which is throwing the deep ball. In 2012 Morris lit it up throwing downfield more than any Canes QB I've seen since (The MAD BOMBER) Vinny T went Pro in 87.

So far this Yr. it looks like new OC James Coley hasn't figured out what made the team go. In watching this game it befuddled me why if UF's DL was stuffing the point of attack we didn't go with more wide open formations (3 & 4 WR sets) moving Duke some into the slot looking for the miss-match? Switching it up going bigger at RB with Soph. Dallas Crawford maybe some 2 back sets with Fr. FB Walter Tucker who on one carry pulled the pile about 5 yds. forward?? It just looked as if we NEVER adjusted to what UF did after our 2 early scored which was vanilla and simple going into a base 4/3 D with man across forcing our talent to beat their's.

Who the hell pays a 3rd cb(Marshall) $million a year?

Boy, that CraigM is "football stupid".

Jus Saying.................................................

Francis was picked up by NE only to get his brains picked. Belichek leaves no stone unturned when it comes to gathering any tidbit of information that can help him.

We'll disagree on why Marshall was ut. As far as I'm concerned it was all about money. As fans we should be pissed off about that.

CraigM should be CraigS, for STUPID on his chest. Bad backs are rarely ever 100% again.

Possibly they just didn't like Marshall or thought he wouldn't make it through the season injured. All kinds of reasons to cut a guy. It's not like the guy did anything great in his time here. Remember that time he won the game for us and made a pick six? Me neither. Do you guys know Marshall personally? Could be he just wasn't their type of player.

Fins are gonna destroy the Browns.

Plain and Simple, Ireland drafted a cb 2nd rd and suigned Grimes. Loser of Marshall/Patterson camp battle was "doomed to be cut".

Taylor wasn't drafted 2nd rd to be a perennial backup. 2nd rd tells you someone in house must go. It was Marshall or Patterson. Patterson will go nxt year too unless Taylor's a bust. Bank on it.................

How does someone with no inside information tell us we should all be pissed based on nothing more than his wild guess intuition something was about money?

Does Craig M think he now controls our emotions?

Raise your hand if you are pissed....

test

Im out, this stupid blog is posting when it feels like it................

great bess trade gonna come back and bite us right off the bat

Bobdole@ 5:55,
I can see that happening.

The bottom line is TNT tutting Marshall and relying on Carroll and two rookies to get the job done left us vulnerable. Argue the point all you want but we haven't even played a down of significance yet and the two rookies are out and Patterson's banged up. Not smart on Ireland's part.

Teddy Bridgewater is worth 3 1st Rd draft picks.

Tonight Kurt Busch will solidify his position in the Chase proving once again that when you act like a man you can always return to the top.
