Interesting week ahead for Dolphins

Big week for the Dolphins. It's one of 16 that will run through December and culminate with a game that will determine your mood for the next three months.

So what's on tap?

Let's start with the minimal stuff first. The Dolphins announced their practice squad this morning.

No.         Name                                    Pos.       Hgt.       Wgt.

31           De'Andre Presley             DB             5-10         188

44           Jordan Kovacs                   S              5-10      210

65           Sam Brenner                      C             6-2        310

76           Jason Weaver                    T              6-5          305

78           Al Lapuaho                          DT           6-2      301

85           Brian Tyms                          WR         6-3       204

86           Kyle Miller                           TE           6-5      262

87           Marvin McNutt                     WR         6-2        215

With two, count 'em, two wide receivers on the practice squad the Dolphins can actually stay at four wide receivers on the roster and make decisions on players as late as Fridays on the health of their roster players.

How does this work?

Well, if the Dolphins suffer some sort of injury to one of the top 4 WRs, they can monitor that injury and decide if that player is available or not. If he isn't, they can simply promote McNutt or Tyms because both players are familiar with the system.

Practice today gets underway at 11:20.

Dion Jordan will be there, I'm told.

[Update: Jordan is practicing, at least on a limited basis. He was actually working in on special teams kick coverage. So that's good.]

It is a big week for him. He needs to have a solid week of work to be on the active roster for Sunday's game at Cleveland. We'll see.

It's also a big week for John Jerry.

He is out of shape (still) and working on regaining his strength in his knee. He is obviously also trying to lose some weight.

While he is considered the starting RG, I'm told he needs to have a good week of practice to solidify that position because it is not sealed in stone. We'll see.

Finally, the Dolphins have questions at cornerback, near as I can tell. Will Davis is in a walking boot at practice today. No, he's not practicing. Also, fellow rookie Jamar Taylor was not present at practice during the open media portion of practice.

If neither Davis nor Taylor are available for Sunday, it explains why the Dolphins kept so many (11) DBs when they trimmed the roster to 53.

By the way, the Cleveland Browns added wide receiver Jasper Collins to their practice squad today. Coincidence?

And Dan Carpenter is among a handful of kickers trying out for the team today as well.

Man are you ever stupid, dumb as a rock stupid.

The situation with our top Draft Picks is frustrating.

So far Sims has been the sole bright spot and apparently he's not starting.

We need Davis and Taylor to start contributing right away. But......Nope!

And Jordan takes a couple of hits and he's out.

Everybody is praising the job Ireland did in improving the team. I agree. But golly gee, wouldn't it be nice if **ANY** of our top picks could contribute?

Posted by: odinseye | September 02, 2013 at 02:06 PM

The day after the draft we both questioned moving up for a Pos. of strength in the draft with other needs. At the time we wondered about J.Martin over L.Johnson, well forget Johnson the kid we also wondered about in late 2nd to 3rd Kyle Long who the entire blog said would be a wasted pick so far seems to be the better OT between him and Johnson going into the Yr. Although Bears grabbing him in Mid-1st was a BIG SURPRISE!

When we posted after the draft the others and us had time to digest the pick with everybody else already convincing themselves about this pick at DE in the 4/3 day-1 remember you and me being alone wondering Pos. while we openly discussed using him in HYBRID OLB/DE mode given alternative was a situational player taken #3 overall in trade up. What we didn't know is that the shoulder injury could be a chronic problem further compounding this move (PRAYING NOT THE CASE!)

The point is we had 2 questions regarding Jordan.

1) In what role (I personally have started to wonder why not SOLB in Misi spot given coverage ability) because if he plays it's as a situational and also Misi whose a one dimensional run Defender is in contract Yr.

2) Would he hold up given light for Pos. and so far not looking like he is maybe needing a couple of Yrs. to get weight and build conditioned like JT before him who everybody forgets took 3 Yrs. to become the player we remember being a situational guy before himself.

Not that were smarter than the rest but when objectively looking at this pick you wondered add the injury to pick 3 Davis and the fact our 2nd pick also came in injured (sports hernia which isn't serious)and you get the idea we took players who may contributed on a very limited basis with depth a concern.

My real question marks moving into the 2013 Yr.

You fools think the trolls are Jet fans? Are you really that clueless? I guess so.

They are the very same clod's you blog with day in and day out.

Humongous drop in play after Danelle Ellerbee.

If Ellerbee is injured and team puts Trusnik on the field were in trouble! In this scenario I would move Wheeler inside and Kaddu over to the weakside were at least given speed he can rush and keep up with T.E.

Lookithat, LV still has it pick'em between us and Cle. even when I told them we are going to win by 6 or more. Apparently they don't believe me.

Oh no, the resident EyeTaliano is here. Get ready for nonsense and bickering and dumb obvious posts.

Vegas won't give us much until we prove something. They see a team with too many players that never played together.

I would play Garner at RG this week if there's even a question about Jerry's conditioning (due to injury). There's no sense in throwing him in their before he's ready only to get him hurt and possibly knocked out for the season.

Funny how the Dolphins aren't panicking and trying to sign a bunch of cast offs from Cleveland so we can prod them for info. Funny because Cleveland IS doing that for some reason. I thought they were supposed to have a good squad up there. What's with the desperation?

It seems like there aren't a lot of people who know what the Dolphins are going to look like. People were ignoring them and figuring them for .500 but it seems like that's because there's not a lot of info out there. Teams don't have film and at least Cleveland may be having trouble preparing.

That right there is why I'm okay with Philbin keeping things close to the vest.

Uh, ok...we'll let him know you are ok with it. I'm sure he'll be thrilled.

Fin4life @ 3:50 PM,

Another way of looking at this post:

AJ Francis becomes a Ninkovitch. Jonathan Martin totally works out and becomes a borderline great LT. Totally eliminating need to draft Lane Johnson or Kyle Long.

Dion Jordan becomes a top 5 nfl defensive player. egardless of what AJ Francis contributes to the Pats in the fuure, Jordan becomes eons better. Totally ruling out need to keep Francis in the 1st place.

Francis is a DT anyway. What purpose does it serve to keep him. Its doubtful we let Soliai walk. Looks Odrick is Starks replacement. We only saw Francis against sure nfl backups and cut scrubs.

Just because he had some good moments against these types does not mean he's a future nfl star. Just my take on it.

If Ellerbee goes down, I fear we may have to go back to a more traditional 3-4 defense. I've seen nothing in Wheeler's career to suggest he can be a very good sideline to sideline tackling 4-3 mlb.

Even that may force to sign another ilb for the 3-4 because guys like Kadu are more suited as olb not ilb.

Agreed but kid is on the cheap rotational player inside. I'm not advocating a star player but in terms of value when weighing CAP as well I felt he showed alot of promise compared to V.Martin who I liked alot when signed but kind of underwhelmed at close to 3 Mil per.

Wheeler is the fastest LB on the roster and can play sideline to sideline the problem is can he shed the Guards given he would be a bit undersized inside. As I said I would place Kaddu at WOLB given speed for rush purposes although in that scenario maybe given coverage ability Jordan would be the best case scenario at either OLB spot if injury occured.

Vaughn Martin is already proven against starting caliber nfl olines. Speaking of cheap, he's comes at vet minimum too. Basically 1 million dollars.

So why trustt the undrafted, unproven rookie fa, playing against olinemen presently unemployed(cuts) over the already "CHEAP" buckup vet?

By outsmarting yourself going "TOO CHEAP" you may find its yourself that you most "CHEAT"....

I believe it was a 2 Yr. / 4 Mil. deal but your right!

That's exactly what "sideline to sideline" means. In the "middle too". A lot more goes into it than just sticking an athletic body type there.

Proof in the pudding is when it does or does not work out. Just don't see any evidence thus far in Wheeler's career that suggest's he would be a very good full time mlb.

If any of his past defensive coaches saw this, he would already be a fulltime mlb by now. You cant always plug players in spots just to hope it works. He plays olb for a reason.

For Clem ZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz...

We are ready for battle !!!!

Here's how I see it playing out for us:

1. Barring Key defensive injuries.

Easily a top 5 defensive finish. Especially when Jamar Taylor and Will Davis are completely healthy. Nolan Carroll will see nothing but wood grain(bench) from that point on.

We should have one of the top 5 lowest 3rd down conversion rates by offenses in the league too. Meaning our offense should consistently see "short fields".

2. Offensively

Since we should see a lot of "short field" on starting drives(many starting at our own 35, and closer). We will move the ball, but, the greatest key for me, will be how quickly Dion Sims develop into "beast mode".

If this happens, we will score and score in loads. I believe its absolutely crucial to have a dominant TE, especially entering into the "red zone".

It will be the greatest difference in whether we score 3pts or 7pts one in the red. That mind friend will be the difference in putting teams away and letting them hang around. Then losing a closely fought scoring contest on our on error.

Basically, giving a game away..........

Getting back to what I was saying earlier today, and for the past 5 years, we need to keep our first and 2nd round picks past thier first cotract.

I made the point earlier today that if we still had Smith and Long PLUS all of the acquisitions I'd think we were a 12 win team.

You pointed out that we could not afford that.

My counter: if they were resigned the summer prior to free agency then we could have signed them for less and we could have afforded them.

That is why I'm saying: Whatever starters are in thier contract year SHOULD BE RESIGNED NOW OR TRADED NOW. If not then next offseason we will spend the draft and FA trying to replace the players that leave instead of supplementing the players still here.

This article Mondo, explains why the Dolphins are so inept. We have no OL-men on the practice squad because there are no OL-men to place on the practice squad.
