On Jeff Ireland, cuts, and PFF metrics

After the Dolphins establish their practice squad and modify the bottom of the roster a couple of times, the work of general manager Jeff Ireland will be mostly done for this roster. His work then will mostly consist of scouting and gauging how well players perform.

And that, in turn, will measure how well he performed this offseason.

My column in today's Miami Herald tells you that Ireland did well in upgrading the Dolphins from a season ago. (I know that will be unpopular with some). But it is the truth and I give you the list of compelling reasons based on what I've seen in training camp and preseason.

The Dolphins yesterday made cuts. And it is interesting not one undrafted free agent rookie made the initial 53. That's a good thing.

To me, it suggests the Dolphins have a strong enough talent base that they're not augmenting to the roster with project players that basically were rejected for one reason or another in the draft. Yes, Miami has had productive players make it as UDFA inn the past -- Davone Bess and Dan Carpenter come to mind as a couple lately.

But these players rarely become stars. They are usually mid-level talent at best.

So the fact none made it this year suggests to me the Dolphins already had plenty of mid-level talent and below and are working to fill the higher levels of talent, their blue chip player number.

As you know, I'm partnering with ProFootballFocus.com this season and will provide game insights based on their metrics film review after every game.

Here are some interesting things that showed up based on the preseason finale and how I view these results.

Offensive Summary

After a good performance against the Bucs, fullback Evan Rodriguez crashed back to earth vs. the Saints in his most extended action of the preseason (33 snaps). He participated in 20 run blocking plays and had a negative overall grade of -1.6.

(Salguero: As you know, the Dolphins kept Rodriguez and here's my concern: Of his 33 plays, the Dolphins ran the ball 21 times, according to PFF's study. If that is accurate it means the Dolphins will typically run when Rodriguez is in the game. Offensive coordinator Mike Sherman has to keep this from becoming a trend that defenses can recognize, otherwise he'll basically be tipping his run-pass selection when Rodriguez is in the game).

[UPDATE: The Dolphins cut Rodriguez today. He broke the news on his twitter feed. Makes sense. He had an unremarkable camp and, as you just read, an unremarkable game in the preseason finale.]

Third round rookie pick Dallas Thomas allowed a sack and a hurry in 22 pass blocking snaps.

(Salguero: Honestly, this kid needs a lot of work. He's a guard. A guard. A guard. The Dolphins continue to work him at tackle).

Michael Egnew got the “start” over Dion Sims, but Sims played one more snap, 29 to 28.

Pat Devlin threw both of his interceptions in the middle of the field and less than 10 yards from the line of scrimmage. Devlin attempted just two passes 20+ yards down the field, targeting Marvin McNutt on a long TD and Rishard Matthews on an incompletion.

Dion Sims caught four of his six targets, with all four catches coming 10 yards from the line of scrimmage.

Defensive Summary

Five players missed 2 tackles, including rookie cornerback Jamar Taylor.  The team had 14 total.

Taylor was targeted four times and allowed three receptions -- to Marques Colston, Kenny Stills, and Nick Toon.

(Salguero: The Dolphins need both Taylor and Will Davis to grow up quickly. It's been rocky so far with injury setbacks for both players. Taylor is nowhere near ready to play against good NFL wide receivers and win consistently).

Backup defensive tackle Vaughn Martin had a sack and 4 defensive stops en route to a +2.5 grade.

(Salguero: Now we understand why he made the team, in part. This game was key for him. He played very, very well).

Special teams

The Dolphins committed three penalties on special teams.

Mike Wallace just got cut.

Let this idiot keep having fun. Im out, hope the idiot finds a willing audience.

Choke this down pretend fans. Ireland did well...lol

I wish Mando would police this blog every once in a while and get rid of the stupid trolls imitating others and generally being a pain in Uranus...

What do we want?

When do we want it?

Whats Up "PHINLAND"??????????

As I stated yesterday. The Dolphins did not have a real FB on the roster....hence the Rodriguez cut earlier today. However Michael Robinson, 2011-2012 Pro bowl FB for a RB that gained almost 2800 yds in the last 2 seasons is available on the wire. He missed his last 2 PS games due to a stomach virus??, but he could be had for the right price.

The Dolphins are pure garbage.

If you want pure garbage try being a Jets, Raiders, KC, Rams, Cardinals, Browns, Chargers or Eagles fan!! But youre a real loser so I have you pegged as a sad and lonely jet fan!!

Ireland is probably THE worst GM in the league. But his ego is in the clouds. We all know that Daniel Thomas, Charles Clay, Dallas Thomas, John Jerry, Michael Egghead and Jonathan Martin are all draft busts. At best 1 or 2 may become an average player, but no pro-bowlers on the list. I'm hoping that Tanehiil will develop but his accuracy and defense reading talent are just not there. The O-line has been and still is very weak. Once again the running back situation is questionable. This team will not make the playoffs again this year, but Ireland will remain yet one more season. We the fans will just have to settle for mediocracy until then. This pre-season, nothing spectacular was seen other than the defense has hopes if they stop giving up chunk yardage.

Hey, the Jets went to the AFC Championship game 2 out of the last 4 years. The Browns beat the Dolphins the last 4 times they played. The Rams passed by the Dolphins already. Wake up and smell the garbage. Its the Dolphins.

tiredfinfan.... whens the last time you heard anything negative about Martin aside from the uneducated garbage some spew?

I was at the game Thursday nite....was on the sideline....McNutt is a worker ...out before everyone else working diligently on his moves..he looked smooth...will be PS if he passes waivers..if not, wish him luck wherever he ends up....

Sturgis worked for at least 30 minutes on FG's pre-game...he has a strong leg...but the New Orleans guy kicks BULLETS!!!..

...Fields is a real tall dude, and his practice punts are a work of art...

.....Graham, TE for the Saints is a MONSTER !! Yikes!! Looked like Herman Munster on Cleats !!!!...

...Pat Devlin looked in complete control during the game......wish T-Hill had his foot movement !! DO NOT NEED M Moore....Devlin is a suitable Back-up ...the 3rd QB is unnecesary ...I think the Fins know Devs won't pass waivers, so they are stashing him on roster...

...Coach Joe looks as lost on-field as he does on the tube...hope the lights are on upstairs...

....well...that's all I have...looking forward to the opener..

Browns > Dolphins

Whos drafting @ 6pm??????????

Arent you the same MORON that said Aaron Hernandez would be out of jail and on the Dolphins bt last week? HAHA

This is probably the only game out of the first five the Dolphins will be favored. They better win this one because this years schedule is front loaded. After Cleveland the following four games could decide if they have a winning record.

Ask Kris about me, he'll tell you all you need to know.

Turnover differential must be positive in the first five games as well as Red Zone ratio decidedly more Tds.
I mostly care about team stats because why do I want to know a players grade in a game, so I can blame him for the loss or help him renegoiate his contract.
Its about wins and losses baby, all the rest is hyperbole,or writing material for the sports writers.Who can we blame this time.

Dolphins wont be favored they're on the road...

Ok, so apparently A.J. Francis turned down an offer by the Patriots to be on their practice squad with the intentions of going to the Dolphin's practice squad instead. But, the Patriots claimed him off of waivers so, he has no choice in the matter now! I guess Belicheat will leave no stone unturned in order to gain knowledge of the Fin's playbook, huh?

Miami releases Evan Rodriguez and claims FB Tyler Clutts from the Texans. Really? A clutz? And, we got rid of Lane and Rodriguez for this guy? Hopefully, Ireland knows something we don't cause I just don't see it...

Rumors that Brian Tyms has been offered a spot on the practice squad should he clear waivers. And, that Miami is considering the same for Marvin McNutt.

Glad to hear AJ Francis got picked up by NE. Hate that he went there, but I think the guy has the chops to play NT or DT in a 3-4 or 4-3. Miami's depth at that position was the only reason he was cut loose. He did fade a bit down the stretch, but his game against Houston was a monster.

Good Luck AJ.... You'll be learning from the best NT in the biz while in NE, (Vince Wilfork)....

As of now on footballlocks.com the Cleveland game is listed as PK.

Cleveland was last in their division and 4-4 at home, the computers in Vegas know that they have spent a lot of money to upgrade their offense,so I wont be surprised if by gametime the Dolphins are favored. It all depends on how the betting goes.

The Dolphins vs Browns is a snoozefest LOL

Biggest spreads NE over Buff(10), Denver over Balt(9).

I am picking the Dolphins over the Browns, the first opening game win for the Dolphins since they beat the Bills 15-10 to start the 2010 season.

Of course the last two opening game opponents were the Pats in 2011 on Monday night and Houston last season. The Fins will play with urgency after the lowly Browns they play the Colts,Falcons,Saints and the Ravens.Only two of those games are at home.

The Dolphins are pure garbage.

That's a terrible post Mr. Off.
Have you seen the Jets lately?

Fact: Jeff Ireland did what most GM's would like to do this off-season; he had the cash and went out and acquired the best players available at the teams weakest spots...period. The success of this team now depends on the coaches (Philben) and the players. The team was upgraded this off season. And that is something to look forward to.

The Jets are in for an interesting season with Ryan going with a rookie QB.This will probably be Ryans swan song as the Jets HC.In head to head competition points won by the Fins will easily top the lowly Jets this year. The 3 ring circus will fold with Ryan and the press will have plenty to write about in nueva yor.

King.....were they favored over the Seahawks or Bengals last year? (if they were, couldnt have been by much)-beat 'em both.....playoff teams--Miami, like every team will win 1-2 games that they're not expected to--were winless last year in pre-season and were crappy Carpenter FGs away from 9-7.....and enough already with Francis......geez.

Ross is a good salesman. He conned the fans into thinking he spent more when in actuality he is spending less. And he almost conned the voters into charity for a multi-billionaire.

Benz and da bloggers Fins waive E-Rod pickup Clutts off of waiver wire from Houston and the Texans.

I had to take my man Henne.

How about finding Tyler Eifert?

Marlins 7 Braves 0 7th inn

Dan Uggla batting .184 for the season.

I was told this is where the cool kids post...
That being the case, here are a few thoughts regarding these latest roster moves.

I'm glad they were able to sneak both McNutt and Tyms onto the practice squad. Not that I'm expecting much of either, but I do think each was worth keeping around and really you can do a lot worse in terms of emergency depth in-house.

To those bummed that D.J. Williams was snatched up by the Jags - Remember he was in Green Bay. GB is a place where skill-players are put in a position to succeed and often look better than they actually are, so what does it about him that he couldn't do a thing in that offense?

Evan Rodriguez looks to be the tough-luck-story this year. I was just reading an article yesterday about his dream coming true. Tough to think that dream lasted less than 24 hours. Harsh.

Well nobody picked up the FB Robinson. How good could he be?

When will some of you realize these guys don't get cut for playing well, they get cut for not playing well.

Dion Jordan is a bust and will always be hurt. We need to cut our losses now. Wake is old and has 1 good season left in him. I would trade Jordan and Wake to the Bengals for TE Gresham. Also I would trade Tannehenne to the Raiders for Flynn.

LOVE FAKING 17-0-IN-YUR-ASS! | September 01, 2013 at 07:27 PM

Obviously this is Kris or Dashi faking others.

Sick fkrs

Cuban vs. Sahi....
Week 1

Week one in FF pits the Cuban VS. Dashi.....

Whatever you want from my roster for L.Miller.

Except, Fitz or A.Foster.

But pretty much whoever else you would like for L.Miller.

Next week at this time the dolphins will be 0-1.

Let's prepare for it now and not go ballistic. Give the team a few games to hit stride.

Lamar Miller?? Really???

I believe keeping Devlin is an indication they are looking to trade either he or Moore for a QB needy team. Ireland will try to get above market value for one of them. The two teams that need one of them the most are in our division, so I don't think he will be trading there.

Cuban I have some pretty decent WRs.

I would've picked L.Miller in the First 2 Rounds but I couldn't log in til half way thru the draft.

Seriously. Have your pick. I already proposed a Trade.

Devlin and Moore are both going to stay on the roster. You can never have enough QBs.
And if by keeping 1 of them we make someone else bad. Then so be it.

Next Year. Moore becomes expendable. And the Fins will probably draft a QB they can develop behind T-Hill and Devlin.

Many teams only keep two QB's.

We are short a WR, G, FS...one QB will be trade bait.

Soren, Irelands idiot, He just might....

Go back and read the scouting reports on Devlin. Everyone of them say he has a weak arm, can't through the out routes, can't get enough velocity to get by many NFL DB's.

That is what the scouting reports say, check them out.

And Some Teams Keep up to 4 QBs, your point.

We are the Miami Dolphins. We keep 3 QBs.

That is the reason Devlin went undrafted. 32 GM's didn't think he was worth a pick even in round 7.

with McNutt and Tyms on PS, the focus right now should be on bolstering OL depth-period.
