Philbin: "We got a helluva team in the making'

INDIANAPOLIS -- Joe Philbin is a planner. He's a professor. He's logical. He's not big on emotion. Basically, he's a vulcan without the pointed ears.

He definitely showed the media no self-satisfaction in beating the Indianapolis Colts, 24-20, on the road on Sunday despite it being perhaps his best victory as a Dolphins coach. Indeed, near the end of an emtionless press conference, I asked him if he was even happy he won.

"Absolutely, yeah" he said looking away, "real proud of the guys. Can't you tell?"

His wife, standing off to the side watching the presser, was among those who laughed.

But just before that presser, in the confines of the locker room right after the game, Philbin actually said something that was interesting. Yes, he read his bullet points off his card to the players as he often does in his postgame speech -- told you he's professorial -- but when he turned away from his notes he announced to his players:

"We got a helluva team in the making!"

Read that again.

"We got a helluva team in the making!"

Now, it's one thing if that's outspoken Pete Carroll saying that because Carroll looks at a Kia and thinks it has a chance to be a helluva Cadillac. That also wasn't emotional Jimmy Johnson. That wasn't Rex Ryan bragging as has been his style.

That was understating, undemonstrative, stoic Joe Philbin going all bright future on us.

And that speaks ... No, that yells ... It yells volumes about what the coach thinks is the celing for his young team.

As I wrote for Monday's Miami Herald, the Dolphins aren't quite yet a certain playoff team. You shouldn't be buying Super Bowl tickets yet. But the Dolphins now are relevant. They are rolling and about to gain more attention because they finally have playmakers as the game-clinching sack by Phillip Wheeler (Courtesy a Joe Rimkus photo) showed.Luck sack

And they're growing and becoming a good team.

I'm an outsider and I can see it.

Philbin, on the inside, obviously thinks it.

This team is headed in a good direction. And by the time the journey is done, the Dolphins might indeed be "a helluva team."

If your going to be SARCASTIC at least make it funny, I'll give you style points on that one although comment wasn't directed at me just happen to remember the debate given I was the one saying Wallace wasn't some one trick pony in Pitt.

(I can handle a joke at my expense)

By the way Sturgis is Da Maan at his specific role! The real BREATH OF FRESH AIR doe me is the fact he's not being looked at as a primary source of scoring which wasn't only a Sparano fault but one that dated back to the Wannstache ERA!

Any news on soliai. I hope its not a serious knee injury... If soliai is out for any period of time than we got depth starks starts no doubt!

"Get this straight Simpson. My name is Brent Grimes!"

"Whatever you say, Grimey."

Don't forget Vaughn Martin is a 4/3 DT as well, we kept him over AJ Francis who the Pats picked up, it was a toos up for me cause loved what Francis showed but Martin is a Vet who brings production from his days as a Charger and will get in on rotation if Big Paul misses any time.

On the pass play where misi left the field it was jelani jenkins #53 who was targeted by te-fb & luck not trusnick #93 great play for good TE cover rookie.

Where we differ tvegas, is this idea that you need a good back in the NFL to win.

Posted by; Craig

Craig- We will differ on that opinion... no problem. When you are trying to run the clock out on Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady, damn right you need a running attack.

As far as the Bills are concerned, they have as much to prove as the Dolphins do. But, if you live around here you should know better than most how improved this team is.

EJ Manuel will be a force in this league. Make no mistake about it. That rookie LB they drafted? A beast! M Williams finally stepping it up with 4.5 sacks yesterday. And Robert Woods is a GREAT complement, even as a rookie to Stevie Johnson. Fins should have drafted him. I loved the guy.

Do they have flaws? Sure? lot of the same ones that we do. Except for the RB position where they are far superior than Miami. Hey, I am still a Bills hater from the old days, but don't overlook this team. They are on the right track. Is NE a good team? Maybe not as good as the past, but hell yeah... everyone shoots to beat the Patriots. When we consistently do that, we could talk.

Later on, he mentioned that he had already picked the Dolphins to be the surprise team this year and believes they will take the AFC East crown.

Also on his Pre-Season top-32 NFL QB's segment put Tannehill at 15 I believe and said he was a riser! Got upset last night watching the NFL Net's closing Prime time show were Deion Sanders was asked how he felt about Luck and he said, "LOVE HIM!" then asked about Tannehill said, "AHHH LIKE HIM?" which ended talk of our game with ZERO Highlights! By the way Mike Irvin is drinking or something again given last week was obviously slurring speech and this week was all over the place with Faulk on his back about it.

Up next are the Falcons, Saints, and Ravens. This should be interesting. The Saints and Ravens are not as good as in years past. Only the Saints game is on the road. Starting yesterday, this stretch is the litmus test of the season. If we get past this stretch with a winning record...

When we beat Atlanta, they'll all have to start believing in the Dolphins!

I believe!

I won't be worried if we lose to Atlanta, losing to an NFC team is the least painful loss as it barely affect our chances of a wild card. They're a good to great team and almost made it to the big dance last year.

That said every loss is the worst so go Phins! I like how we have one of their own now (Grimes) hopefully the coaching staff picks his brain.

Darkoak, we have two in our starting lineup - Clabo

I released 3 of my FF players this morning.

Have you noticed how much better the blog is since Mando cleaned it out?

Finally we can talk about football again.

Dark & Mark,

I don't think Clabo can bend his knees very well, either cause there so screwed up or wrapped up tightly. I mean you have to be able to bend your knees at the line, but Clabo got blown away giving up a sack and he just stood there like no big deal. I hope he does not become a turnstile like Colombo was, someone mentioned that before.

Wonder when they will stick Watson in, the kid we just picked up from Philly? THill either Needs to get rid of the ball faster and throw it away or start stepping up in the pocket, or it's going to be a long season of 3-5 sacks a game and he'll be all ragged out by the end of the season.

ETF, whether Daytona is gone or just being congenial - it's better around here definitely.

Cleaning house ETF?? Is that because they couldn't beat Armando's Buffet Pants?

MADIN, yeah the pass protection is definitely the BIGGEST problem. Can't go on giving up 5-6 sacks a week. Those lead to fumbles or hurried passes that are picked off. Luckily neither Indy or Cleveland are dynamic in a pass rush but if we are doing that against baltimore - we may have a problem.

I was on the Dolphin band wagon, knowing full well is was smoke and mirrors. Well after looking over the game stats Im convinced the Dolphins were lucky as hell to get this win. If a motion penalty had not been called the Dolphins would have lost. That motion penalty ex'd out a colt TD in the second half. Dolphin defense gave up 145 yds rushing and 5 sacks, and nearly 500 total yds. Dolphin OL had 44 yds rushing, not exactly knocking your hat off, is it. I think the Dolphins are the luckiest team in the NFL this morning. Yeah the defense made a play in the second half that saved their bacon, but that wont happen every sunday. Dolphins 2-0, but I wouldnt bet the mortgage. Philbin this Dolphin team isnt knocking people off the ball. You were lucky to day.

UHm, AR-15, Dolphins had 101 yards rushing and 420 yards of offense themselves. Games come down to little things sometimes like penalties and discipline and special teams. Just be glad the Dolphins were more disciplined than the Colts. Points to coaching, maybe the Dolphins are just better coached?

AR-15 @3:57

Absolutely we could have lost that game but we didn't.

Regardless of who did what and when the bottom line is that we were in the game in the 4th qtr so we had a chance to win.

To me that is the best that we can hope for when playing a good team.

If the game vs Atl is close in the 4th qtr we will have a chance to win that one also even if everyone does not play perfect.

after further review of the game stats, Dolphin offensive line gave up 5 sacks and had 44 yds rushing, the Dolphin defense, the powerhouse defense, gave up nearly 500 yds of offense to the Colts and a motion penalty in the second half ex'd out a TD and save the Dolphins, this is not what Id call a great team in the making. Defense back saved the day with an int, but i wouldn't bet on that every Sunday. Great teams in the making dont give up 5 sacks and 500 yds of offense. Uncle Joe what you been drinking during half time? P/S get rid of those nasty ugly uniforms. light blue and "Dream sickle" orange wont cut it. Bring back dark green and bold orange. Dolphins look like wussey's

I still can't run the ball, but I'm working on it.

Posted by: Brian | September 16, 2013 at 02:47 AM

Brian, some would say gamblers regarding strange calls by officials to keep a game close. The apparent no calls on 2 Luck intentional groundings (he was clearly in the grasp and on the way down) are bizarre. By rule, if the QB is in the grasp, the play is dead, no penalty. But they didn't give us the sack, nor the grounding call. Can't have it both ways.

We had ZERO penalties, but that was a makeup call for the dozen times I saw our pass rushers on the outside getting tackled by the Colts O-Line.

Hopefully, Philbin will gently mention to next weeks referee to allow our rush to have a fighting chance. Of course, this means Martin and Icognito must be on their best behavior. LOL

They need to go read option more on short yardage.

Of course we let them score that TD with 1+ minute left, f4l. Nahh, just kidding.

I said before the season if we could get to 5-3 or 4-4 in the first half of the season we would make the playoffs. Now by watching all the teams for the first 2 weeks I think the first 5 games are going to be the measuring stick,I'm looking at 4-1 in the first 5 then the schedule calms down quite a bit from what i've seen. As always the patriot games are key and buffalo is better than people think, in all honesty provided we have no "KEY" injuries and the rookies can continue to progress we can start thinking about 12-4 or 13-3 and possibly some home field in the playoffs. Realistically it is a long season and things can change very quickly, so still a "wait and see" right now. If we take down the falcons at home next week things will be definitely "real" for the Fins for the first time in a long time. Keep the faith and come out to the ball park on sunday and give us a real home field advantage.

Also, as far as the uniforms go I would like to see all black uniforms at home games with the Teal for numbers and an orange outline, that would be "DOPE" and looks a bit meaner as well.

agree on black uniforms but wouldn't they be too similar to the jag's?

Black uni's in S Fla's sun? You may want to rethink that.

go bravesssssssssss

gonna be a fun game, they better pack that stadium sunday and get loud. falcons are beat up and we could get a huge win

I'm hoping we are in all white again this Sunday. Let the Falcons play in the dark colors. Let the sun beat down on them. It is a shame though, that they are playing at 4pm instead of 1pm.

Maybe we could bust out the black uni's on a night game, that would be cool. You're right on the dark uni's in the hot sun for sure, that one slipped my mind, just thinking how good they would look. Even though they would be similar to the jags uni's I don't think anybody will be mistaken the Fins for the Jags anytime soon, LOL.

4 pm game will still be hot, second half may be a little easier on them. but hotlanta is just as bad.

I live in the ATL. It is hot as hell here. They play in a dome though, and are used to playing in 75 degrees.
Not this week.

what would be 'dope' is if Jordan could have sacked Luck to kill the drive instead of letting him run for a first down.

What time does it cool off in Miami anyway? I'm stuck out here in 49er country, they all got their tails between their legs out here after that thumping last night, I love it cause they are some of the most aggravating fans in the country.

jordan looked awful

Kent -

Black uniforms would look sick, just intimidating and awesome - BUT, only wear them on a night game. Just like Rage stated, under the SoFo heat would not be good. Are own guys would melt, man I'm sweating just thinking of it.

Zero penalties...that was a lucky day? Right, no that's call great coaching! Philbin built a really good coaching staff, Sherman I don't think will go anywhere...but Coyle, if we have a great season expect his phone to ring for a promotion. I would hope Boss Ross would show him the Benji's to keep him.

What sucks is that when a team is really successful you lose coaching staff, management will need to guard on that but with the organization turning around and Philbin's coaching low key mentality, we will be a premier landing spot for coaches and players.

I hate looking ahead and perfer to take it game by game, but if we did go 12-4 or 11-5 Philbin wins coach of the year. I know that's a stretch, but anything is possible.

4 pm is actually the hottest part of the day

Thanks for the info guys. Jordan still looks a bit like a deer in the headlights out there at times and I don't know what he was thinking when he gave Luck that chest bump, all he has to do is wrap up ad that's a sack.He is still young and learning I would expect him to improve little by little each week,hopefully...

Tannehill looking much better so far. Yeah, he's holding it too long at times but better reads, progressions, decisions, throws and looks more comfortable. Despite ... the O-line. Still going to need to upgrade some personnel on that line in the future. Clays making plays, still cant block but he's been an asset. Grimes looking good. Wayne burnt him when he went for the pick on that long ball but cant fault him for being a playmaker. D brought the pressure when it counted. Last season, it would have been a 4th Q loss. And how bout the rookie, Caleb "kicker" Strugis. Nails 54 yards just after being iced and then nails it again ... same kick, both near dead center. It's early on but it's looking better.

PS. The new fins logo still looks like a penix tattoo.

People play the result, they could have lost but they didn't, they're 2-0...they deserve credit for that. But it's asinine for people to think that this is a great team in the making. They can pass the ball when Tannehill is protected. Credit to Philbin and the FA's they signed. They can't stop the pass. Blame goes to Ireland here for his poor drafting ability (Caroll, Wilson, gone V. Davis, S. Smith). They can't run the ball. Blame goes to Ireland here as well, six years of O-Line problems). If Soliai is out they won't be able to stop the run (Starks is not a DT/NT, and he's disgruntled, hates Philbin, flipped him off). The win yesterday helps the Dolphins chances of winning 8-9 games with no playoffs, instead of 7-8 games, no playoffs. How far the Dolphins have fallen that 9-7 would be a great year. I remember when 9-7 was as bad as it ever got. Still a mediocre bunch. That's all Ireland can produce because his drafts are so poor.
Helluva team lol.

wow ross big fan arent ya

We're 2-0 and still very young in this regime. Lots of improving still to go. We're not going to go undefeated so we'll have to come off this high sooner or later.

I would prefer it not be the 1st home game though. Hope were ready for the Falcons.

One thing with Philbin at the helm, there aren't too many highs and lows with his guy. Hopefully the team will take on that style. I think these guys will show up and play hard every week.

"Great teams in the making dont give up 5 sacks and 500 yds of offense."

I'm sorry but this post doesn't make a lot of sense. Great teams IN THE MAKING give up a lot of things, points, yards, whatever.

Because they're not great teams yet. They are good with potential to be great. You also seem to forget that Andrew Luck is a great qb and that the Dolphins actually won the game. They can give up 1000 yards to a team , if they win they win. You can't take a win away from a team because they didn't dominate. That's pretty ridiculous.

Further more 4 of the 5 sacks were coverage sacks. I'm not sure you know what that means so I'll let you know it has nothing to do with the offensive line.

But I do agree that the o-line was putrid in the first half but really turned it around in the second. They went in the locker room and got it straightened out. Good team, that's all that needs to be said. The DOLPHINS ARE A GOOD TEAM.

"But it's asinine for people to think that this is a great team in the making."

I don't think you're grasping the meaning of "in the making". Did you actually go back and look at the Pats stats two to three years before they went to the Super Bowl? Their stats and record sucked but they were a great team in the making. Ravens, same deal, Packers,. How about the 49ers. The year before Harbaugh arrived they were horrible. Not even close to what they are now, but they were a great team in the making. I know you're trying to put our team down but you should make better points when doing so, it's not working.

"They can't stop the pass."

Whaaaaaaaa? They have four players injured in the defensive backfield and are mixing and matching right now, they also played against one of the top qbs in the league who has a very potent passing attack. The Colts hadn't lost a game at home in over a year. They only allowed Luck to throw one td pass. One td pass, did you hear that? Who cares how many yards they throw for in between the 20's, the Jets defense used to do this all of the time, bend but don't break. Seems like maybe you didn't watch the game and are relying on stats to tell you the story.

"That's a mistake Blame goes to Ireland here for his poor drafting ability (Caroll, Wilson, gone V. Davis, S. Smith)." Ireland is ranked in the middle of the league and crushed ozzie newsome this off season. He's not the best, but he's certainly not the worst like you're trying to make him out to be. If you do a fair evaluation of the gm you will notice that he has kept a larger percentage of players on his roster than 17 other teams. It's out there for you to see, you just have to want to know the truth and stop making things up to suit your Dolphins bashing agenda.

"They can't run the ball. Blame goes to Ireland here as well, six years of O-Line problems)."

I don't entirely disagree with this point. But you did see they ran for over 100 yards yesterday right? Maybe the first game was the only time we will see that. Not enough games have been played yet to say they CAN'T run the ball. In one of the two games they played they couldn't. Miller averaged 4.9 yards per rush yesterday. That's pretty good.

Who are you talking to?

LOL, I'm reading it Phins. Give FIRE ROSS hell.

" If Soliai is out they won't be able to stop the run (Starks is not a DT/NT, and he's disgruntled, hates Philbin, flipped him off)."

And this right here is when I realized you're a Jets or Patriots fan and a Dolphin hater. Starks did not flip the coach off, he said so, Philbin didn't fine him and even made a joke about it. You're reaching because you hate the Dolphins and are telling stories with half truths. It makes you look like a very ignorant fan or a fan of a rival who has an agenda. And more proof is the fact that STARKS VERY MUCH IS A DT AND HAS BEEN FOR 5 YEARS NOW. So yeah, wrong again

What up Crew!!! Nice to have a troll free blog with real fans!! Yesterday was a big win and another step on he right direction.

Few things worth mentioning about the Falcon game.

1. Home opener!!
2. Atlanta is nicked up!!
3. Clabo and Grimes played for Atlanta last year and want payback.
4. They know the playbook for offense and defense!!
5. Grimes has covered Julio and company for 3 years in practice.

Lots to like!!!

I still think Sherman is not a good play caller.

Can we run a fake handoff bootleg just once?? He has no clue how to keep DEF off balance!

Posted by: FIRE ROSS | September 16, 2013 at 05:46 PM

The rest is just complete and total proof that you are lying and are not a Dolphins fan nor have you ever been. A fan doesn't come in to a fan blog after his team goes 2-0, beating two teams on the road, (both of which were supposed to win according to most), displaying playmakers all over the field, showing signs that the team is finally getting it together, and you're here bashing them.

You can talk until you're blue in the face about being a fan but I'm calling you out for being dishonest. I am 40 years old. I have met thousands of fans in the thirty or so years I have been involved in and watching football. Not one of them ever bashes their team when they are winning games. It doesn't happen, it's not reality. You're a rival fan and your posts are short sighted and ignorant. Thanks for dropping by but you lose, no one is buying your BS.

So both Ron Jaworski and Jon Gruden be both watched RGIII closely and said that his mechanics are off right now because of last year's injury. 'He can't fully plant his right leg right now. That prevents him from getting full velocity on his throws'.

And yet there was YG live on this blog last Monday berating anyone who shared this viewpoint on here during a Redskins fight back. Like he knows more about playing football in the NFL than Gruden or Jaws......

What a COMPLETE tool!

etf I'm exposing Fire Ross. He's not a fan. Every single one of his posts since he first arrived have been laughing at our team our just purely bashing them.

He has never said ONE GOOD THING about the team. So you guys tell me, sound like a fan to you? Even when a fans team is doing poorly they can always find a couple of diamonds in the rough to talk about. Not this guy, not one good thing to say about a team who is supposed to be 0-2 but instead is 2-0 going into their home opener?

Give me a f$#@ing break already. I don't care that his opinion is different than mine. I care that he is lying about who he is because he thinks it will make his posts more relevant to us. I can see through it. Fans DO NOT act this way.

Kris is cautious as s$#t and always points out the teams shortcomings. But you know what, he also points out the positives he see's. That's what real fans do.

Debate is great and I would love for him to answer any of my posts regarding the team, I think I stated my case pretty clearly by using mostly facts.

But stop with the nonsense I'm so tired of it in here. Be honest. You're a Jets fan say you're a Jets fan, Pats fan same thing. Everyone is welcome right?

But don't laugh at our team, badmouth all of the players and management, and then tell us you're a fan. It's obviously a lie.

Craig wasn't that YG character banned? We should make this the last night anyone speaks his phoney names in here. You know he will be reading and getting off on the fact you're talking about him. Why give him the satisfaction ya know?

Last thing I'll say on him. I used to love how he would call us circle jerkers while he spent every day of his time in here trying to get in the middle of that circle. Engaging every single one of us and trying to get us all yelling at him. So in the end, he was the lone man standing in the middle of the circle taking loads of criticism from everyone in the group he supposedly despised so much. Hated us so much but made every effort he could to get us talking with or about him.

Hahaha just a ridiculous person. I won't speak his sign in ever again, that was it.

Just think - now we can come to a football blog and talk about football.

One can talk and talk about the yards given up. But Indy can get yardage on pretty much anybody. Yet we've given up only 30 points. That might be bested by Pitts. tonight but if not we're tied for the league lead in that category. Granted one was against the Browns but the other was Indy. A good balance of opponents.
