PFF-Salguero study of Miami over Atlanta

Another Tuesday has arrived and it is time to look back, probably for the last time, at the Dolphins rousing victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.

My partners at ProFootballFocus.com have passed along their best nuggets based on their tape study and metrics and I will add insight and opinion wherever I can.

Here we go:

OFFENSE

Daniel Thomas allowed one sack and three hurries in 11 pass blocking opportunities.

The Lamar Miller-Daniel Thomas timeshare is still close. Miller played 27 snaps to Thomas’ 24, but played exclusively on the game winning drive.

Salguero: Thomas is averaging 3.1 yards per carry so he is not exactly lighting it up running the ball. The reason he has value is because he pass blocks well, supposedly. Well, this was the second consecutive game he allowed a sack. So if he can't pass block well, either, where are we?

LT Jonathan Martin had his best pass blocking grade of the season (+2.3), allowing one sack and doing most of his work against Osi Umenyiora.

Salguero: As you know the Dolphins allowed five sacks on Sunday. But Miami's two tackles had their best days of the season. Tyson Clabo, who had given up three sacks in the first two games, did not yield a sack against his former team. He did yield a hit on QB Ryan Tannehill and a hurry. But all things considered, that's improvement.

LG Richie Incognito had his least productive day of the season. He yielded a sack and a quarterback hit. RG John Jerry, meanwhile, had his best game of the season. Yes, he also gave up a sack but for the first time in three games he comes away with a plus grade.

Tannehill only attempted two passes travelling 20-plus yards in the air.

Tannehill was 13-of-14 when blitzed, but also was sacked four times and threw an interception.

Tannehill targeted Asante Samuel just two times on Sunday.

Salguero: PFF has Tannehill rated No. 8 among QBs overall. But if you boil it down to just passing, which in my estimation is what QBs are about, the ratings improves to No. 4 overall behind Peyton Manning, Phillip Rivers and Matt Ryan. Are there issues? Sure. Tannehill is still holding the ball too long at times and that's perhaps one reason he's been sacked 14 times this year -- more than any other NFL quarterback.

Brandon Gibson caught at least one pass against each of Thomas DeCoud, William Moore, Robert McClain, Robert Alford, and Joplu Bartu.

Lamar Miller was matched up against DE Jonathan Massaquoi on the play where he dropped potential TD pass.

DEFENSE

DE Dion Jordan saw his first extensive action as a rookie. Rushing the passer on 20 out of 31 snaps, he tallied 4 hurries and a hit as the highest graded defender.

Salguero: PFF has Jordan rated the highest graded defender in the game -- for both teams.

OLB Philip Wheeler had rough afternoon with six missed tackles, repeatedly whiffing on Jason Snelling and Jacquizz Rodgers.

Salguero: The Dolphins missed 11 tackles this game. Safety Chris Clemons was the second-highest on the missed tackle scale with two missed tackle. MLB Dannell Ellerbe did not miss a tackle.

Wheeler was targeted nine times in pass coverage, giving up six catches for 68 yards and a touchdown.

Brent Grimes was targeted just two times by Matt Ryan.

Nolan Carroll struggled against Julio Jones, allowing 4 catches for 70 yards on 7 targets.

hey, regarding the draft class....if we had Sturgis last year we likely wouldve been 9-7

Odrick is not a sack guy, not his strength--I'm hoping he steps up next year if Starks or Soliai walk--but unless I just miss it, Odrick definitely doesnt seem to standout much if at all--he's ok, but Starks and Soliai make obvious impactful plays....if one of those 2 go, just hope Odrick can truly fill their shoes, or close....dude was a late 1st rd pick after all.

2watt, its only thenne when you post. Cmon man say something negative about the phins today. We are all waiting. Keep the streak alive please.

This is why Brian Billick is a pantload.

http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/powerRankings/2013/3

Rottin stinkin Jet's move up 11 spots by beating the piece of crap Bills, and the Fin's move up 3 by beating a team that was 5 yards away from going to the Superbowl last year. Makes perfect sense.

Billick is a little confused. 10th overall is a little light but the biggest ??? KC #7 for beating who exactly??

ZERO playoff teams not only from last year but Jax hasn't made the playoffs since Natrone Means was roaming the earth it seems, Dallas since Tomy Romo was a balls holder (I still thinks he likes holding balls holds balls) and Philly hasn't been in a for a few years now...

This proves Tannehill is well on pace to be our qb of the present/future. Like Armando says:

"Tannehill is still holding the ball too long at times and that's perhaps one reason he's been sacked 14 times this year -- more than any other NFL quarterback."

This at least turns some of those sacks into positive scramble yardage or incompletions.

Tannehill should slowly begin to see less blitzes. His blitz efficiency ratings will change how defenses defend him passing the ball.

I guess we can officially declare that Tannehill was not a reach anymore?? Seems plenty worthy of that #8 pick, maybe even the #2 when you see Bob on one leg hobbling around.

Less blitzes could also mean more time to find Mike Wallace deep in the near future. Kudos to this.

Jets shotty on offense, but Rex Ryan has them #4 overall defense. Please don't see Jets as a "gimme game".

Any team that can keep a game close has a chance to win. Even if they are the putrid Jet offense.

just wanted to thank Mr. Ross for making a great decision to hire Philbin and sherman, whatever they have done weather it be the assisistant coaches they have brought in, or the players they have chosen to play, it has gotten us to 3-0, so a big congrats to them for pulling miami up by the boot straps. now i know things will never be perfect and just as well i know they see the same flaws we do, so maybe the runningbacks they envision fit their scheme, but for some reason, if miami were to make the playoffs, i see the runningback position being this teams achilies heel, and i don't think i'll ever get past the fact that after such an impressive offseason, we opted to pass on eddie lacey 6 times and then pass him up in 5th round only to draft another fly weight runningback in gilislee a few short picks later...maybe i'm wrong, maybe a little runningback is the way to go but, how then do you explain the colts making that trade for RICHARDSON...how can any possibly say that they would rather a lamar miller over the likes of an eddie lacey or a trent richardson? wouldn't it be great to have a back that could consistantly move the chains, a back who is a legitamate threat, one who could blow up a blitz and at the very least take some of the pressure off away from the passing game while adding to the element in the playaction?? i guess i just don't get it. after all we are 3-0... GO FINS!

Despite the suspect at times pocket presence. Tannehill is showing definite signs of making the huge 2nd yr leap he was expected to make this year.

Man, that 4th qtr winning td drive was absolutely vintage. No questions about it!

Give Ireland 4 more years!!! LMAO!

I Goota find out what Bill Bellick is smoking... LMAO, Jets jump up 11 spots....
Thy beat a winless Bucs team,Lost to New England and beat the Bills...
He must live in Colorado...(Weed is legal there)

Jordan, highest rated defender on playing field Sunday? Wow!

Umenuri with his 2 sacks must have been totally invisible other than that. Is this the same Dion Jordan some say was a huge #3 overall reach?

How did we pass on Eddie Lacy 6 times? He was a 2nd round pick - we passed on him twice.. c'mon budtki!!

Sam, those geniuses also thought Tannehill was a reach ... dummies ...

With a win in the "big easy", there may be espn discussions on if Tannehill is the best of the bunch in the 2012 qb draft.

There has to at least be a discussion after slaying Luck, Ryan, and Brees in succession.

Was at my sons flag football game last night. Another parent from the team showed up wearing a Falcons cap.

I asked him, How about that Dolphin game Sunday?

He said, "Man, I don't even want to talk about it. Tannehill killed us."

Sammy, That's gonna(Beating The Saints)be A Tall order, I don't think it means Tennehill is better then those QBs, It would just mean he plays on better team, Which IMHO is more important....

Not shearing too much about how we 'should have given up the farm for RGIII' or 'drafted Weeden' these days. Where'd those guys go? Geniuses had it all figured out BEFORE LAST season even started. Guess that's why they're on a football blog and no front offices are seekig their opinions.

Also not hearing too much from the 'Fireland' crowd. You know the guys. They'd prefer we have a CLEVELAND situation here, where the teamm is CONSTANTLY changing their GM, HC and starting QB. How's that working out for Cleveland these days? I'm confident a lot of the clowns that were calling for this aren't even Dolphin fans.

Miami signs DT Austin, but I can't find where they cut anyone to make room for him. He could be a beast if he can keep his head together. He's been known to be a problem child.

Where was the pass rush against Atlanta? Matty Ice should NOT have left that game with a clean uniform! The Defense HAS to step it up against New Orleans or Brees will eat them alive. He's still mad at the Dolphins for going with Culpepper and not signing him.

If Miller & Thomas keep having problems running the ball, they won't be with the Dolphins next year. Other teams with bad O-lines have RB's that are breaking through arm tackles to make yardage...just not Miami's. Using Sims as a FB to block could help.

Egnew caught a pass? Wow!

We're banged up, and sometimes it's not a pretty win, but we're 3-0 after beating two playoff teams from last year! I hope Atlanta puts it to the Pats this week. But, we really need to win against the Saints! They can be beaten! Philbin & Co. just have to figure out how and coach it!

GO MIAMI!!!

just think if our running game or offensive line play improves, even a little....how much better TH can be if he sees less pressure/has more time

Speaking of free agent RBs - Darren McFadden may be out there???

Tracey is that Marvell Austin from UNC? That guy is ultra talented but ur right, mentalcase.

I must admit that I'am not a fan of Jeff Ireland, With that being said I had the fins at 7 and 9, yes they have a very good team as far as starting players(10 or 11 win team) But I also see no Depth in the team, Injurys are already happening, I'll still go with 7 and 9...... JMHO..

Sorry, marvin ... that guy may be lightning in a bottle. Good situation for him here, he will be learning from some major pros. If he can't get straight here, he's done.

Well said Craig. Don't forget about Jake Long and Jeff Fisher. What about Matt Flynn? Not Many THenne comments either. How about Kyle Orton or Vince Young? Wasn't Mando on the Carson Palmer bandwagon (lol)? How about Tyler Eifert?

Yeah Ireland hasn't been perfect, but much better than the couch GM's especially since Philbin came along. And I agree most are probably trolls or one troll with 10 different names.

Cuban, there is no freakin way they go 4-9 from here on out.

Toronto awarded the 2016 NBA All Star Game - Strippers rejoice!!!

yeah, Cuban, forget it.

As long as Tannehill is healthy, they will be playoff bound...

Marvin Austin was a good pick up. The leaders on this team all the way up to the GM will cut his butt in one second, if he is disruptive or turns into a Buttclown! Finally feel like we have a team that are unified and what was Omar Kelly saying about civil unrest in the locker room?

EK I was the one who wrote "just the facts" and it was regarding the the site I pasted.

How did you take my words, attribute them to DC, and then try to use them to disprove a completely separate story?

lol holy crap.

As for Soldy/holy/FIREROSS or any of these other fukkers who want to make comments when I'm not here....

I couldn't give a shyte about you. You're a piece of garbage. I think you've been told that on more than one occasion, by more than one poster. You're here for no other reason than to try and cause problems. The rest of us are here celebrating our team and enjoying it. Not one of you clowns is going to ruin for it. Capiche?

Now go fukk yourself!!

"How did you take my words, attribute them to DC, and then try to use them to disprove a completely separate story?"

EK, I'm 99% sure you are a huge Fox News fan. They're training you well ;)

Mark,

I didn't realize Toronto still HAD an NBA team. I couldn't care less. They're as sad and pathetic as the rest of the Toronto franchises. I wouldn't shed a tear if they folded and moved. HOPELESS!!

Cuban there are 13 games left. You have them winning four more games? lol whhhhaaatttt?

I'm not saying they're super bowl bound but FOUR GAMES? We could win four games alone against the Jets and Bills.

The team's THREE and 0 and you get clowns like SOLDY on here regurgitating the same list, day after, day after day....

'This guy is a bust'.....'that guy is a bust'.

It's the same FUKKIN' list. How pathetic must this guy be to come onto a DOLPHINS site, day after, day to post the same junk. And the KICKER is....these guys RUN for the hills when the Dolphins win....HILARIOUS!!

Had to sign in again, So here it goes..
NeMo, Injuries my friend(No Depth)
MIT, Gotta give us the Place's to visit during the NBA all-star game....

So this defense has me baffled, which is not very hard. I really try to follow defense, trends, etc.But I am usually drunk when I watch football and forget the score, what down it is etc. LOL

Our Defense pretty much looks like wet turds for the beginning of the game and seem to step up in the end. We can all agree on that. I think alot has to do with halftime adjustments, I presume.

What I was thinking, with all the blitzes ,different defensive looks and high motor guys who hit hard. Is it possible this defense Mentally and Physically wears down the team? It seems Wheeler and Ellerbe play at the same speed in the 4th quarter as they do in the 1st. Ok, maybe a little slower but not terribly noticeable. To me it seemed like Burnett and Dansby were done by the 4th and hence the usual drop off in production.

I dont know just something I was kicking around

Craig, it may be true that the Raptors stink but look around and see what their true legacy is. The City of Toronto produced Tristan Thompson (#4 to Cleveland 2011), Bennett (#1 to Cleveland-2013), and Andrew Wiggins (#1 - 2014) - and there are many other first round picks recently and future #1s. So although the pro team sucks, they are helping produce studs in the Association and before long - hopefully these guys and/or others will want to do what the big 3 did in Miami a few years back and conspire to all join the Raptors to make them credible for once....

I mean, that's the Raptors only chance of ever being relevant anyway ...

plus if the raptors left - half of the stripper economy would disappear - think of the strippers Craig!

"I couldn't care less."

YES!!! I didn't think I would live to see the day but someone actually used this statement in the correct manner.

For those who are confused, it is the only way to say that. If you say "I COULD care less" you are defeating your own point.

Thanks Craig! You've renewed my faith, some people do still care about grammar, hallelujah!

Mark,

I think of them OFTEN....

oscar. 6.5, bet the funny farm.
lol

Mark,

I miss fuji water bottle girl. Why did you replace it with Ben Roethlisbergerumbermurger sister?

"or 'drafted Weeden' these days. Where'd those guys go?"

Craig M.

Who Kris? He's still here. lol

Phins78,

The Queen's English....

Let the trolls on here hit away....going give a rat's ass...

rdubs, Ellerbe is an animal, that's why!

Eh?

ok rdubs, changed her back for you ...

" Injuries my friend(No Depth)"

Cuban Menace

Cuban?! Did you watch the game Sunday? Guess who came in and turned the game around on defense and then won the game with big plays? Our defensive backups. And they did it against a very good team. Isn't that called depth?

No team has pro bowlers on the bench. Those are your back up guys, they are your depth. Pats are doing it right now as well.

Craigy, no one gives 2 sh*ts about you or your thoughts about us trolls or what you care about.

Day after day though you bless us with this useless information. You're like a Snapple cap.

The more you address us in your whiny, bitcy way, the more you're targeted. You are a glutton for punishment.

P.S. We didn't know you had to be here for us to make fun of you. LOL

Get over yourself, you self abosrbed weenie!

Phins78,

I wasn't aware that who Kris wanted. I know there's been others, cause I've seen their inflammatory RANTS.

I think there was some debate about their merits as players but I think the real clincher here was Tannehill's age and his room to grow. To me Weeden was about as good as he was going to get. The unfortunate thing for him is he was drafted into a loser organization and he's going to go the way of Chris Weinke and Claussen. Overhyped and never really given the chance to show what he can do. He'll be a back-up in Cleveland next season or somebody else's organization.

lol

Craig I was totally joking but yeah I'm pretty sure Kris was all over Weeden. No biggy, we all like guys who don't catch on for whatever reason. But Kris and I had debated a little about Weeden's age and a few other things. I'm so rarely right I wanted to give myself a pat on the back!

Well, at least ESPN Power Rankings are listing the Dolphins at #7, the rest of them are hovering in the 10-12 range...ugh!

Whatever troll......BIG YAWN.!!!

And that's true too. Kris still could've been right but we will never know. Weeden, unfortunately for him, was drafted by the Brownies. Had he been drafted by the Phins or any other team the results could be different. He's probably ruined now.

Oh, and Mark in Toronto...yep! That's the guy. And, you're right, he could be a beast if he can get his head straight...
