Update from practice and who is Danny Watkins?

Here's a quick update on what's going on at practice today:

The rookie cornerbacks are still not practicing. Will Davis (ankle) and Jamar Taylor (hernia) missed the second straight day of preparation for the Cleveland Browns.

Davis, in a walking boot Monday, is out of the boot today. He was walking quite gingerly. Interestingly, yesterday Davis wore the boot on his left tankle. The team complained to at least one reporter about writing which ankle was wearing the boot. Today, Davis is wearing wrapping and a sleeve on his right ankle. Pretty sly, those Dolphins.

By the way, The Herald's Adam Beasley has reported Taylor will likely not play against the Browns. Just as well. He was bad in the preseason finale and clearly not ready to compete on an NFL regular-season level.

Long snapper John Denney and quarterback Pat Devlin were also absent from drills today. No reasons for those absenses yet, although Denney's, at least, is believed to be excused for personal reasons.

Newcomer Danny Watkins was at practice today, as expected. I believe the best use for him is as guard-center swing guy. Watkins is a former first-round pick waived by Philadelphia after only two years.

Why the bust in Philly?

The media in Philadelphia questioned his passion for football and Eagles GM Howard Roseman questioned his toughness, which is never good for an offensive lineman. Or a football player.

“When you watched Danny play, the toughness, the hockey-playing aspect of him, never translated to Philadelphia, and that’s one of the things that I told him today, was that when you watched him at Baylor and when you watched him at the Senior Bowl and when you met him, he had this innate toughness about him,” Roseman told CSNPhilly.

“You felt like you were getting an enforcer, and he never let himself go here on that, and I don’t know why that was. I told him that was what I was the most confused by. Because that was something that everyone at Baylor told you about and you saw on his play on the field, and I think it all goes back to the pressure he put on himself here."

Roseman interestingly believes a change of scenary will help Watkins.

“He put a lot of pressure on himself, and he couldn’t just go out and play, and I think getting away from being Danny Watkins the first-round pick and just being Danny Watkins will really help him,” Roseman said.

Well, that takes care of Watkins' aggressiveness. But the media in Philly also questioned his dedication and passion. It is no secret Watkins' first love is firefighting. He came to the United States to become a fireman, not a football player.

From today's Philadelphia Daily News:

"That photo on the firefighting site Northeastbravest.com the Inquirer uncovered, of Danny dressed out in full Rescue 1 gear at a Northeast Philly fire last Dec. 16, carrying a motorized saw, is really all you need to know about Danny and passion. His passion was for firefighting, which is what he left idyllic Kelowna, British Columbia, to come to the United States to learn more about. He got sidetracked by football. When somebody tells you that you can win a college scholarship, and then make millions of dollars doing something professionally, you pay attention. But paying attention does not put you on the intensity same level as someone who has spent his life hungry to play the game, living it, breathing it.

The Eagles were off that day in December when Danny toted gear around for his fire department buddies. But less than two months earlier, he had left the starting lineup with an ankle problem, and then he’d lost his starting job to journeyman Jake Scott, signed off the street. You’re a recent No. 1 pick consigned to the bench. Wouldn’t you want to spend every extra minute watching tape, perfecting technique, working in the weight room to get bigger and faster?"

Interesting.

Funny, but the ad on the top of this blog page advertises a Toronto Argonauts fan cruise ... which one of you jackarses programmed that???

This article is everything I basically was told on Saturday from a good friend who works for the Eagles. Must be true and not BS about the change of scenery and not being able to deal with the pressure.

Regardless, Samuda sucked this preseason more then not. He couldn't pass block at all which doesn't bode well for a team like Miami is seeming to become as pass first.

Gary Stevens has the following to say on Mr. Danny Watkins:

1) Danny Watkins will be a better pass-blocking RG than John Jerry. I say this with confidence because a half-full bag of potatoes would pass-block better than John Jerry.

2) I reject narrow minded Parcell-isms in evaluationg players. The Great Tuna - as you will recall - would routinely ask players to answer "what is most important in your life." Those maladjusted enough to answer 'football' received the highest mark, while those misguided enough to say 'family', 'faith' or even 'firefighting' would get a question mark.

I mean, we all want football players on the Dolphins who are dedicated, hard-working and professional...but at the same time I like players who are capable of grasping concepts that exist off-the field.

3: The Dolphins do not need an enforcer at Right Guard. Please remember that we are blessed to have the DIRTIEST PLAYER IN THE NFL as our starting Left Guard.

4: By aspiring to, you know, save lives as a firefighter, Danny Watkines aspires to a standard of heroism far greater than anything we will ever see on a football field.

5: But again - think of the progression:
Danny Watkins > Bag of Potatoes > John Jerry

Gary Stevens has finished.

Do I have fears, butterflies in my stomach, hell ya. Dustin Keller was a HUGE loss (I'm not in agreement with Craig and others that the "next guy up" can fill that void). Offense, while looking better, still isn't churning the way the great offenses do (almost without effort). We've got youth EVERYWHERE (which means on the job training and learning in the FUTURE from the mistakes they make NOW). We're thin in a lot of areas (the injury bug could separate us from our goal of positive improvement this year).

But you guys think 31 other teams aren't thinking that right now? You think the NFL isn't a league filled with parity? Anyone can do it this year. Why not us? Stranger things have happened. Same owner, same GM, same HC, same OC/DC, same QB, same Cameron Wake. These guys make too much money to keep walking in place. When I went to the White House to honor the 72 Dolphins I heard the same refrain, "when will it be our time again?" Fans are ready. The Owner is ready. The GM is ready. The HC and the players want the glory to be remembered for all time as the guys that made it cool to be a Dolphins fan again. Because being a Dolphins fan means you're a fan of a WINNER. In the end, in Feb 2014, only 1 will stand. We don't have to escape reality and demand it's us. It might take longer than that. But there are attainable goals. 3 FGs last year would have made them come true. With a rookie QB. With a depleted WR core. With a horrendous secondary.

Playoffs isn't a dirty word this year. Playoffs is a laudable goal. AND IT'S WITHIN SIGHT. We just need to play with passion. And ferocity. We need to see ourselves as winners. This isn't the post-Jay Fiedler Dolphins. This isn't Saban's Satanists. This isn't Cam Cameron's Band of Dysfunctional Disasters Waiting to Happen. We've been through those nightmares. We've made it to the other side. We have nothing left to fear. We've seen the worst they have to offer. There's nowhere to go but up. Protect your house. That's all. Falcons, Ravens, Bengals, Chargers, Panthers. PROTECT YOUR HOUSE. Then go 4-0 vs. weaker division rivals (or split with 2 and go 2-0 vs. the other) and you're right there. It's not hard. But it takes sacrifice. And effort. And yeah, a little luck. But we have to believe. If we don't believe, then how can anyone else.

I BELIEVE! Make a difference. Join me.

Yeah Mark -- targeted banner ads are staple of online advertising. The abilty to microtarget viewers is a huge source of cost-return for vendors as well as for the Herald and other high-traffic sites. What I see up-top is quite different than what you see.

Now, if you see lobstertube ads up top...well that might be embarassing.

Of course, Toronto Argonaut ads might be even more embarassing.

lol

DC,

Let's go DC!!! lol

Good stuff bro!

IMAWriter from the last blog),

I have a number of friends who kids go to school in theUS. It's also a worldwide held belief that Americans know much more about themselves than the rest of the world. You're questioning this? You're taking my comments as criticism, when in reality it's simply an observation. You obviously don't agree with me but I'm not sure that makes me a 'tool'.

Whatever man.....have a good day!

dc,mr roarkes' sea plane is ready 2 depart.
lol

Kris,

Breaking Bad is clearly my favourite show on TV. Stick with it. It keeps getting better and better. Great writing and great characters. Glad you are getting into it.

YG or Awaken ... please recognize sarcasm when you come across it ....

DC channeling his innner Lombardi ... love it!!

2watt, you're my first believer. When the camera pans the crowd, and shows you, you'll be right there pumping your fists for the Dolphins. I'm convinced.

I think 2 watt is the big dude in the end zone they show every game ...

Kris, Breaking Bad is the best show on TV. I came late to the party too. But once I watched 1 episode, I was hooked. I couldn't watch them fast enough (sometimes had 6 hr marathons just watching back-to-back-to-back episodes). Mark's right too, the cinematography is amazing. The acting is good too (Jesse's my favorite character). Just a great show. Only depressing thing is this is the last Season. But all good things come to an end (and so do all bad things, so that's another reason to be optimistic with our Dolphins).

I am nervous about the season which means I have hope, That is a good thing to start with. :)

IMA, the MOUTH is a tool. He thinks he knows everything. As if you couldn't tell. Just like he thinks I'm YG today LMAO

Some people just can't accept the reality of how much they are liked or in his case, disliked. In part because of his snobbish arrogant attitude.

Let him have his queens English. Since he acts like one it's quite fitting that's what she uses.

DC@1:25pm,

Very we'll said. I echo those comments. Also a bit late to the party on this show but go through the first 2-3 seasons using the marathon method. To me this show is right up three with The Sopranos as one of the best shows ever to hit the airwaves.

DC is your team team 72 Undefeated? It looks like we're playing week 1. You have a pretty good team. It should be fun, good luck.

Low Winter Sun isn't bad either. I'm getting into it (though it's nowhere near Breaking Bad).

Holy,

Not bothered by your comments in the least. Just the fact you need to hide behind made up sign in names tells me all I need to know about you.

I won't be losing any sleep knowing I won't be getting a Christmas card from you again this year.

Guppy Gossip says that the first game of the season is a "must win" or the season is pretty much over?!?!?!?!?!? Seriously????? Gut Gawwd man! Every game is a "must win" but is a loss going to kill the season? Hell no! Thinking like that just pisses me off.

Hey NeMo, yes, it is. Good luck to you too. I'll try not to run up the score too much (this being Week 1). Don't want to embarrass anyone.

"The team complained to at least one reporter about writing which ankle was wearing the boot. Today, Davis is wearing wrapping and a sleeve on his right ankle. Pretty sly, those Dolphins."

I don't get it, do these reporters really not see why the team is doing this? Is this a f%$#ing joke to them? You want to put a kids career in jeopardy and then laugh about it? If you write the exact nature of the injury down to the side it's on it allows the opponents to better game plan against that player.

Am I the only person who sees this?! wtf!

Now if he comes in the game the offensive coordinator will obviously test the bad side of his injury by calling plays that will force him to plant on that ankle. We are thin at cb and this guy is trying to get better so why not announce to the league that the day he comes back this is the side you should be targeting! Make him cut on this leg, block him on this side. Then Davis can either aggravate the injury or simply wear down due to overuse of a leg that isn't quite ready. (then why would he be playing if he isn't quite ready,,,,BECAUSE THIS IS THE NFL AND PLAYERS PLAY HURT ALL of THE TIME)

So the coach is trying to protect his players. And the media is doing the exact opposite because they think we want to know the exact nature of the injuries?! WTF!

I hope Ireland addressed his possible lack of passion for football. It wasn't that Ritchie Incognito lacked a desire to play ball...he just lacked self control...meds can help with that sometimes...happy to have him too. He had one of the best lines ever out of Hard knocks other than Sherman on Egnew: When learning he won starting Job incognito is like "dude grats..pound it...don't f#*k it up!, lol

Not bothered Ms. Queen? That's why you bothered to reply? What a doofus.

Oh wait, doofus isn't the Queen's English! Freakin` tard!

lets go fellas almost here. gonna be a very close game. lets win the turnover battle

To IMAWriter from the last blog//I do have 1 child in school (10) and a niece and nephew in college in North Carolina. I also have two nephews age 8 that I help my sister (who works for the school board here in Upstate NY) with so I'm pretty close to the situation.

I teach my son and nephews everything they need to know about our religion (christianity) and they attend Sunday school all together. When they are old enough they can make up their own minds on religion as I'm not forcing my personal beliefs on them. I do not want the school system teaching my children about my religion when they should be spending time with more important courses that will actually help them get ahead in a very competitive world.

Why would I want a stranger teaching my child about my religion? Silly you know?

And the only reason they are being taught about the Muslim way of life/religion (they're not just being taught about acceptance of the religion but about the way the people are as well) is because people in this country have no clue what these people are like and think they are all terrorists. They are beating them in the streets because of their religion. Is that America? Not my America, they should have the same freedoms I'm afforded. And it's not my religion or culture so how will they learn about it if not through the school?

Who's going to teach them about Muslims,,,,me,,,you? We don't know the first thing about these people so yes the school is trying to educate. They feel that between church and home we should be able to teach our own children about our OWN religion.

And if they grow up more educated about a religion and way of life that covers much of the world won't they be better able to face future challenges in the workplace? The Muslim population in this country is growing and are kids are going to have to work with these people to get ahead.

So do we want our kids scared of every Muslim they encounter when they grow up or do we want them to be able to accept their differences and work together toward building a better world? That's my stance, I'm not going to let hate and irrational fear guide my childrens lives, I want them to be happy and successful for the betterment of our country. Just a different way of looking at it I guess.

Too funny....................................

Just to think, 3-4wks ago there was talk here of moving Pouncey to rg and Josh Samuda to center.

My how things can quickly change. My how quickly dolfans can promote a scrub to starting position, then the coaching staff thinks polar opposite, and that same player is lucky to get promotion to ps.

Samuda began to suck, about the same time dolfans here had him promoted to starting center ahead of Pouncey..... Just saying...............................

2watt, you're my first believer. When the camera pans the crowd, and shows you, you'll be right there pumping your fists for the Dolphins. I'm convinced.

ofcourse i will be.
lol.
i just see things differently than u.
lol

Why so much fanfare for this Danny Watkins guy? I doubt he ever sees the field.

"They are beating them in the streets because of their religion. Is that America?"

78,

I would LOVE to see evidence that this is actually going on. Not just an isolated incident. By the jist of your post, you made it seem this is rampant.

Haven't you heard? A WWII vet was beaten to death last week.

An Aussie kid was shot to death.

Do you want the schools to teach kids about Australians & WWII veterans as well?

What a warped society this has become. Pardon in advance for not using the Queens English. LMAO!

78 will be happy, 1st tail gate is lasagne.
lol

seth, let go to 1 of those inside burning bldg. trainings,
he'll change his mind.
lol

Danny Watkins was better than Samuda and he wasn't even trying? lol isn't that a good thing? Doesn't that mean we just upgraded the position and if the change of scenery is what he needs we now have a blue chip 1st round pick taking up the spot previously held by an undrafted free agent? And if not he is still better than Samuda, and it's costing us nothing. There is absolutely no downside to this but don't let that stop people from hating on Ireland.

Also to Watkins defense, the entire Philly oline was pretty terrible the last 2-3yrs. Vick didn't help things by holding onto the ball a little too long at times, poor pocket presence, and many times the oline not knowing how to pass protect for a qb that was a little all over the place.

Michael Vick is a difficult qb to pass protect for.

What's the chances Holy and YG would be on the blog at the same time and spewing that same tone? Unreal.....

Ok, that's my exit guys. Cheers!

Posted by: Mark in Toronto | September 03, 2013 at 01:24 PM

You know what's creepy about this guy? He's obviously a regular in here and he uses a different persona. Not a different sign in!!! An entirely different personality. He actually purposely uses misspelled words and has a whole character outlined for this sign in name. Is this not disturbing to everyone? That there is a creep who gets off on being different people in here? Yikes, I can hear the Psycho music in the background.

ey Mouth, why don't you ask Armando instead of the blog?

Obviously, the truth would have to shut you up because we'd all find out you're wrong.

Go stare at your Queen of England poster. Mary!

Why so much fanfare for this Danny Watkins guy? I doubt he ever sees the field.
Posted by: Seth | September 03, 2013 at 01:54 PM

Because as a 1st rd bust, he's still better depth than Josh Samuda and Dallas Thomas.

If either og went down this season, we would have been royally f-cked with Thomas or Samuda. With Watkins we're probably only mildly f-cked.....

Posted by: For all that is holy | September 03, 2013 at 01:54 PM

This post is all over the place and makes no sense. And who gives a f%$k about the queens english? Not me.

db,it's coaching, if watkins goes to ne, he's an all pro.

and maybe watkins is a dog person and he wanted vick 2 get killed.
lol

Lemme do it for you big mouth M.

Armando Salguero, Can you PLEASE shut the Mouth up & tell everyone whether YG & I are the same person?

Please! Serve her majesty up some humble pie! I want the blog to know how WRONG he is, as usual but, won't admit to it.

EXPOSE HIM!

sure 2 watt just like all those other bums they sign and release

Really? Was it NOT you who said Americans are beating Muslims in the street?

I asked you for EVIDENCE! Got any? Of course not!

I gave you 2 examples of non muslims being KILLED & you ignore it.

Instead of backing up your RIDICULOUS CLAIM, you tell me I'm all over the place 7 make no sense.

WHAT A COP OUT!

dusty, how many phinz have gone 2 ne and exploded.?
i have 3.and soon 2 be 5.
lol

What's REALLY FUNNY............... I have my suspicions it's KRIS using the aliases pretending to you dipsh-ts friend, then being your enemy when switching to troll-drag......

You guys, and you know which ones I am addressing this to, are the most idiotic and gullible saps on the entire planet.

AND YES, I AM YG........

See, you didn't even have to guess wrong on that one. We cant have that, now can we...........

I think we should look at Danny Watkins (Guard). He was released by the Eagles. A 1st rd pick two years ago.
Posted by: The Woodshed Gang | August 31, 2013 at 09:30 PM

It looks like Ireland is finally listening to me. This is a good pick and I could see this guy picking up a lot from Richie Incognito. He sounds like someone who is tough and mean but doesn't understand how to use it on the field. If anyone can help him in that aspect, it's Incognito.

Hey 2 watt, how did Derrick Dennis and A.J. Edds work out for the Pats?

You want proof, look it up stupid it's all over the news. An army vet who was a muslim was just beaten on May 16th. There are news stories all over the net. You want proof? Are you smart enough to use google or youtube? They actually have videos of Muslims being beaten with people laughing in the background, one even playing "we will rock you" while it's going on. Get your own proof dumbazz I wasn't even talking to you to begin with.

They are dumwits. I agree. Notice how they all ask th eblog to confirm someone is a troll or you.

Yet, NEVER ONCE, ask Armando to confirm it like I just did.

They are all dunces without a clue in the world that they are gullable suckers!

What I wouldn't give to have Armando come here & tell them how wrong they really are. PRICELESS!

Holy,

Armando already served those idiots that "humble pie". Their retort was that Armando and I are in cahoots together.

Not only are these retardo's super dumb, they're super paranoid to boot....... LOL...

Samuda didn't have a great preseason and they felt Watkins is farther along as a prospect backup. Good pickup for depth

You're an idiot! You made the claim, not I. The burden is on you to prove it. LMAO

How privelaged you think you are.

BTW, do you think it's just muslims who get beat in the streets? Not blacks, whites, Asian, WHOEVER?

Should schools start educating on every single race so we better understand them? What a Mornic thing to even fathom.

If they deny it, it must be true. Bunch of tards in here who think they know more than they do.

Like this one wanting schools to educate kids on muslims cause some get beat on the streets. As if, it's only relegated to Muslims.

Unreal the stupidity.

Posted by: For all that is holy | September 03, 2013 at 02:05 PM

You are so f%$#ing clueless. Oooohhh you asked Armando to confirm it so that's proof right there.

Armando doesn't read this shite you twit! LOL And he doesn't ever confirm who is who because he would be outing one person when multiple people do the same thing.

Are you pretending to be stupid or are you really this dumb?

I asked Armando so that means I'm telling the turth! lmao

That did it. Moron had to ruin a good thing again, later.

nemo.
how did evans
thomas
welker
ninkovich work out.?
lol

78, can you ask your local school principal to talk about Australian teens because 1 was recently shot in the back by black teens who were bored?

You are a total knuckleduster.
