« Tannehill limited with shoulder issue | Main | The practice report from the practice that never was »

Who is responsible for getting Tannehill hit?

Nine sacks in two games. That's a lot.

That's the second-worst mark in the NFL right now. The Dolphins are getting quarterback Ryan Tannehill hit way too often so far this year. And it's one reason the quarterback is nursing a shoulder issue that had him missing part of practice on both Tuesday and Wednesday -- although the club was only required to report Tannehill's limitation on Wednesday.

Nine sacks is what the Dolphins have given up. The team has also given up 18 hurries.

So it's the offensive line, right?

Well, right. But not totally right.

Each member of the Dolphins offensive line has thus far given up at least half a sack this year.

LT Jonathan Martin has yielded one.

LG Richie Incognito has yielded half a sack.

C Mike Pouncey has yielded half a sack.

RG John Jerry has yielded a sack.

And RT Tyson Clabo has given up three sacks.

Clabo and Martin lead the Dolphins with six hurries allowed each. John Jerry has yielded five hurries by my count.

But it doesn't end there.

As tight ends and running backs also have pass protection duties for the Dolphins, they also are responsible for giving up hits on Tannehill.

Running backs Lamar Miller and Daniel Thomas each has allowed a sack on Tannehill. Oh yeah, and Tannehill is also responsible on getting hit occasionally when he holds the ball too long.

One sack the Dolphins gave up is probably being charged to a blocker but I put it on Tannehill. He held the ball too long. He basically got himself sacked in my book. So one sack allowed for him.

“Yeah, I had one in the game where I had all day," Tannehill said Wednesday. "We repped the play in practice several times and obviously it played out well in practice, it didn’t play out so well in the game and I didn’t have the right reaction to get rid of the ball and that is what it comes down to. The offensive line did a great job giving me all day to throw, it just a matter of getting the ball out."

Now that his right shoulder is dinged, Tannehill might be wise to get the ball out quicker. And yes, the Dolphins have to tighten up the protection of their quarterback.

All of them apparently.

Truth Home hopes so

Home has Kaep/ TanneHOPE @ QB in FF

plus Wallace/Hartline/Sturgis

Go Phins!

FINS 78 @ 10:34AM,

Yeah, I agree....I saw the same thing on that play....Tannenhill was shaking is arm in pain on the way back to the sideline....

Although expecting more like 10-12 TDs each for Wallace & Hartline

:)

Miami now -3. Mucho dinero moving the line -1.5 from yesterday. Dolphins train picking up steam but the secondary injuries concern me

..Deaners. I don't want to sound contrarian. I don't want to stomp on RDubs point because I have never seen evidence from him that he feels this way. But most here HATE the analysis that the guys on TV offer...They are all morons or ex hack players, blowhards, hornblowers. Would this change if these same guys had positive things, anything to say about the Dolphins?

I TD pass a game against crap defences is not good.

It was nice for a couple days without the trolls.

I will admit Tannehill can hold on to the ball for a bit longer than he should on a couple plays. Needs to either scramble or get rid of it and avoid the hits. Its just nitpicking at this point though, he is playing really well.

Both teams have a pretty good pass rush with the Browns having Kruger and Desmond Bryant and the Colts having Mathis and Werner.

Falcons only have Osi who doesn't scare me at all at his age.

DD, that is the exact reason I never wanted Weeden. We sw this movie before with former Toronto Blue Jay Chris Weinke. It is plain as the light of day - Tannehill was the right and astute pick at #8.

Dolphins talk of the NFL w a WIN over Hotlanta !

Go Dolphins !

neMo, don't try logic with this fool. remember, he's been banned by Mando before - only one other than Daytona that had to be dealt with that way - tells you the quality of person this is...

But before I depart. Dashi and I were the only ones saying we shouldn't extend Reshad Jones yet. I think it was Dashi but I know whomever was with me on it so far we were right.

MY point was that his duties were changing and he would have more responsibility now. I wanted to see how he handled it when he can't just play schoolyard football and roam wherever he wants to. He has to remember more assignments now and just as we suspected he's not doing that well. Hopefully he will get better but he's DEFINITELY not the player he was last year so far. Not even close to making impact plays and is responsible for a TD.

YOU DON'T EXTEND GUYS BECAUSE THEY HAD ONE GOOD YEAR!

*quantity

lol

Have to resolve the offensive line issue before the Baltimore game otherwise Ryan Tannehill will get killed by Suggs and Co.

We? There is only you, the lonely Jets fan in a Miami Dolphins blog. Weird

Matty Ice would be devastated w this loss to the Dolphins

1-2 Wow

DD, regarding national attention... if the Dolphins become a team to be watched .. they will get more games on national tv... it would be nice to be able to ditch the Sunday ticket and be able to watch fins games on cable for the most part.

Look if the OL is so horrible IMO they suck, than this coaching staff should design roll outs run pass option plays for T-Hill, because according to this coaching staff Tannehill is a great athlete which I haven't seen yet...has anyone notice? So far when he takes off running seems slow and not great mobility and he play WR in college? Now I know why he is a QB
But he has improved
So who's fault is it Mando! Its JEFF FIRELAND FAULT PERIOD.. 6 YEARS AND THE OL STILL SUCKS...in matter of fact its the worst I seen since guru Sparano OL's. Worst!

Yeah...no QB entering the league over the age of 25 has had success...now some have seen success over that age in the league that haven't previous...but they were also IN the league during that time...I remember debating JS about Weeden ad nauseum...he still won't admit the Weeden pick was wrong...heheheh...
All the talk about how much of a leader he was in college...he was 10 years older than everyone else...with 10x the life experience...he better be a damn good leader in college...get to the pros and its a different story...cuz no one really gives a shyt...

DarrylD,

Contrarian? I'm assuming this means contradictory?...never saw this word before....anyway, I guess the question is, is it better to hear positive stuff from the "blowhards" or just nothing at all? For the past couple of years it's been close to nothing at all....But, I suppose your right about most of those guys, however I like what Tom Jackson has to say picking one off the top of my head....

Will post some Home pics from the Home Opener

This is a must game to attend for any real
Miami Dolphin Football fan!

Go Phins !

Phins78 jeez give Rashod a chance to learn his new responsibilities he balled out last year and deserves a chance. I wish he can switch position with Clemmos who seems to get his hands on a bunch of balls but can't catch. If Jones got his hands on as much balls as Clemmons 90% it'd be a pick.

Sorry I type Dolphin RAY wrong. But where is that great athletic ability of T-Hill?
There isn't any that's why.

Gotta agree with Craig on Cleveland being one of the worst franchises in the NFL. Giving up after Week 2? Pathetic. Giving up on a 1st-rounder when you've proven NOT to be able to spot talent at the QB position (though they've been in draft positions when they could have acquired a franchise QB by now)? Pathetic. Now they're hoping they hit on a gem by getting two chances in the first round. We'll see, but overall, THEY ARE PATHETIC.

As far as Tannehill getting hit, what guys need to remember is MANY aggressive offense QBs face pressure. That's the down side of sending more guys out running routes, you have less in to block. Remember all those years our TE was NON-EXISTENT because he was helping block, how'd that work out for us?

Yes, our line needs to do a better job, but NOT at the expense of slowing down the offense. Matt Ryan gets hit, Aaron Rodgers gets hit, but the upside is, those teams score lots of points. There's a balance you need to have. Brady has been lucky up til now by having a good oline, but he also had lots of targets. Now that those targets are reduced, you're starting to see him face the same problems.

Time to takeover the AFC East. This is OUR year!

I’m gonna argue that the revamped Dolphins are having the greatest impact of any team in the NFL so far this season.

MIami beats Cleveland — the Browns decide to throw in the towel on the year.
Miami beats Indy — the Colts decide they need to get better fast at any cost.

Home totally agrees w stanger. Great Post

...Phins78..What are you talking about? I missed those debates. If you say so I believe you. But I can't remember a person here that was upset about Reshad Jones being extended. Also..the idea that he freelanced last year is false..He was the guy who made up for the mistakes by Clemmons. He was the guys that was solid on the back end..Yes he has been less then what many expected this year(I debated last week he was would grade out worse then Wilson..Jones was poor last week)..

To me...Jones is a guy we drafted..Those are the guys you extend. The players we develop from within. I wouldn't be so quick to say I told you so(If that was your stance from day 1)

DC, Cleveland better use all this ammo to secure Bridgewater or Boyd or whoeer is considered the elite prospects at Qb come April. They have one mission come this draft - get ur QB. Don't use a stupid outdated 1990s approach like 2012 to use a top 5 pick on a so-so RB and a secondary Qb prospect. Hey Holmgren, 1996 wants it's draft approach back ... loser

And regrding our o-line ... if that is our biggest problem in year 2 of the Philbin experience then that is an easy problem to fix and things overall are darn rosy...

now that I'm thinking about it, is there a TV analyst that anyone in here respects? Is there a consensus on who is the worst? Responses would be interesting....

Deaners, I respect Sterling Sharpes analysis as well as Jaws...they are usually not overly biased and very astute...

Before the first game I was a little nervous about the first five games. Now I'm thinking we have a great shot at 4-1 before the bye.

Falcons and Saints look really beatable.

Ravens look like they're not making the playoffs.
Go Fins

Exactly Mark, and to the guy who said same excuses are given for Tannehill as Henne, I say, "WHAT EXCUSES?" Why anyone would feel the need to give excuses for a QB in his 2nd year who's grading out at like #4 in the NFL and has his team undefeated is beyond me.

If you asked me right now, Year 2/WK 2, who's the best QB from that QB class I'd say RYAN TANNEHILL! And no, that's not just homer speak, watch the games.

..Mark in Toronto..Now that I can buy..More games on National TV(I know we were talking about the radio coverage the Phins have been getting..But yesterday they were mentioned as a possible flex option v NE down the road..That would be sweet) I do love the ticket though. It would be nice in a tourist town to be able to put the Phin games on the TV's...As of now nobody wants to see us. Steelers, Giants, Packers, Niners, Broncos, even the devil himself(Bellichek) I need the ticket at home just to see the games because I can't watch them at my own place.

Deaners...I don't know what contrarian means either.(I just thought it sounded cool)..

I like Mark in Toronto. Pretty much agree with everything you're saying, especially about Jake Long. Hope the Rams lose 12 games this year, or at least 6 of the 8 he'll be playing.

@1118

"Don't use a stupid outdated 1990s approach like 2012 to use a top 5 pick on a so-so RB and a secondary Qb prospect. Hey Holmgren, 1996 wants it's draft approach back ... loser"

...HAHAHAH!!! WOO!!!

the only issue I see with this paragraph is this...1996 CALLED...and wants it's draft approach back...
Either way...classic...

...Deaners..I enjoy Trent Dilfer, Pat Kirwan, Greg Cosell..Even Mayock. These guys IMO give great insight to the games as far as seeing the game on a level I cannot.

Dolphin Ray,
He was very successful last year rolling out and can move. I mean he was a pretty decent receiver in college as well... If your comparison is to that of RG3 or Vick then you are correct.

DD I agree with you on Trent Dilfer...but c'mon you all have to agree Suzy Kolber is the bomb!! lol

or at least 6 of the 8 he'll be playing.

HAHAH!!! you fkkers are on point today!!!

A contrarian is a person who takes up a contrary position...especially a position
that is opposed to that of the majority...regardless of how unpopular it may be...

I come on here and read what mando writes and i read some of the post. there are all types of post. I like to say stop worring about everything and anything and just watch the gaes enjoy the wins. I think miami will get ths one at home in front of there home crowd knowing they have to win to get fans. The big one is saints in new orleans on Monday night that will be the hardest game

Issue of Analyst's:
Keeping a tally while I work. If anybody wants to chime in even if its someone already mentioned....and don't forget the ones you hate....

thanks Jack!

I like you too Eric!!!

By the way, contrarian to me has a trading connotation. Pretty much means to zig when everyone else is zagging. Buy what everyone else is selling and vice versa. In trading it requires a lot of patience and the ability to have a high pain tolerance ...

THERE IS ANOTHER WAY TOO AVOID SO MANY SACKS AND THAT IS TO GET THE MAN A RUNNING GAME GOING AND THEN HE IS AT HIS BEST(PLAY ACTION).SECOND IS FOR TANNEHILL TO RUN THE BALL MORE OFTEN (SCRAMBLE) THIRD IS TO SIMPLY THROW THE BALL AWAY. OFFENSIVE LINEMEN KEEP UP WITH HOW MANY YARDS A RB GETS IN A GAME AND HOW MANY SACKS GIVEN UP,SO IT HELPS THEM TO APPLY THESE SIMPLE TACTICS THAT MAKES THEIR STATS LOOK GOOD. AS FOR SUNDAY THE DOLPHINS NEED TO START FAST GET THE CROWD INVOLVED AND RIDE THAT HOME CROWD EMOTION TO A 34-17 VICTORY.. THE FALCONS ARE HURTING AND DO NOT PLAY WELL ON THE ROAD AND THIS IS THE FINS TIME TO MAKE A STATEMENT. 3-0 WITH THIS SCHEDULE TO OPEN THE SEASON IS SOMETHING NONE OF US IMAGINED BUT COULD VERY WELL HAPPEN IF FINS TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS ON SUNDAY (THEY WILL). GO DOLPHINS!! WIN THIS ONE FOR THE FANS TO START COMING BACK TO THE TANK.

those of you talking about not re-signing Long in the context of money alone (too cheap) are clueless....it was money/contract relative to the risk of injury--the decision was based on the combination of the two.....decision might turn out to be right or wrong over time, but when you only bring up the money side, you show that you have no idea what you're talking about--but thats somewhat par for the course for many on here....

DD, yeah the package is great and all but man, it is subject to technical difficulties though - games flipping around, temporarily switiching to other games... I hate relying on Rogers up here ...

Deaners...Can't stomache listening to Sean Ohara......horrible analyses and very much a dolphin hater!

benz, also heard that Miami's deal was also the best deal he got. Forget him, he obvioulsy forgot us...

Long didn't even make the final decision..His WIFE DID!!lol

...The guys I don't like to listen to...Fouts, Deirdrorf, Colinsworth(which is a shame because the Sunday game is usually the pipe hit)...Berman, all of the Fox guys, Jamie Dukes, Warren Sapp, Boomer Esisaon, Shanon Sharpe..Keyshaun Johnson..All of them could be fired today, and I think the product would be better tomorrow.

answer to Mando's question is simply.....lack of a running game--defense has no fear of our running game so pins its ears back and brings the house--and you get 9 sacks after 2 games.

and of course you gotta love listening to Dan the man...

...The Fox morning show guys..Joe Buck is great.

Tedy Bruschi isn't bad if wasn't a former patsie

DD yea I like buck ,but Aikman is a horse's ass

DD, who do uou like on Fox or CBS? Seems like you hate em all

Another easy solution to protecting Tannehill is for sherman to call some screens to Miller...get him in space and the d-line can't pin their ears back when the threat of miller taking one to the house exists...

Berman is the devil!

Joe Buck is a baseball announcer, not a football announcer - his personal opinions and his story telling is not fit for football - more for America's pastime.

I think Dierdorf is a charity case - must feel bad firing him - him and Gumbel can take a hike.

I've figued out I don't like anybody besides Jackson and Sterling Sharpe... miss I could understand more of what his brother is saying ... and oh, I like Howie Long too

I think Aikman is an awesome colour guy...

MIT,
This will make you proud.. I have a song stuck in my head and yes you guessed it..
Informer- Snow The Canadian Rastafarian Rapper from the 90's

another solution to protecting Tannehill would be for Sherman to call for some screens to miller....with the threat of him in space and taking it to the house,d-lines can't pin their ears back and go after RT

Phil Simms is the best of all--objective, knowledgeable/gives good insight, not pompous
