McKinnie: The timing, 'Big Mac,' Philbin reaction

As I shared with you in the last post, the Dolphins' plan for Bryant McKinnie is to play him at left tackle. Only left tackle. Period.

And today, McKinnie confirmed he worked only at left tackle during practice. Jonathan Martin said he worked at both left and right tackle during practice.

"I'm a left tackle," McKinnie said. "All I've ever played. I've never taken a snap at right tackle."

So, again, when McKinnie is up to speed and ready to play, he is the left tackle and Martin will move to right tackle.

I believe this is a deal general manager Jeff Ireland had to make. It was a must-do move because to sit by and watch Ryan Tannehill get hit week after week was a recipe for ruining the young quarterback, if not getting him hurt.

So I approve. Bryant McKinnie is not a great player at this late stage in his career. But this is a rental to survive the season. It had to be done.

But the timing of this move boggles.

Why didn't the Dolphins do this trade two weeks ago during the bye? McKinnie was available then. The Ravens were shopping him then. The idea of trading for McKinnie was no secret to anyone -- least of all readers of this blog.

Everyone knew Tyson Clabo was struggling for weeks. It should not have come as an epiphany to the Dolphins on Monday -- the day after Clabo once again gave up game-defining sacks against Buffalo -- that their offensive line needs help. Clabo gave up game-defining sacks against Baltimore the last time the Dolphins played.

So why the timing of this move now instead of the last several weeks when it made more sense?

"We considered a lot of factors and made the decision and we thought this was the right time," coach Joe Philbin said today.

I hope he's fibbing. I hope he doesn't really believe the timing here was right. If he does, the Dolphins are in bigger trouble than anyone might think.

As you know the McKinnie addition fits like Chad Johnson fit. In other words, he doesn't fit the culture. Everyone knows it. And everyone accepts that desperate times call for desperate measures, thus this trade.

But Philbin said he's expecting McKinnie, a well-known party animal with a history for visiting all sorts of clubs on late night jaunts, to fit in with the Dolphins.

"We expect anyone who works for the Dolphins, coaches for the Dolphins, plays for the Dolphins to represent the organization in the right way on and off the field ... All of us have a responsibility to act accordingly," Philbin said.

McKinnie said his party reputation won't be a problem because when he's working, he's working. He said his party persona only applies to when he's off. McKinnie said "Big Mac" is his offseason persona. Bryant is his in-season persona.

(First of all, it's never good when a player claims to have an alter ego. Secondly, the infamous Love Boat incident in Minnesota in 2005 and Party Bus incident in Baltimore this year happened during the football season).

"I'm concerned about what he does in this building," Philbin said. "I don't mandate what people do outside the building. I enjoy my free time when I have free time. I expect him to be a professional just like the other guys."

Dolphins should keep their fingers crossed.

great glad to see everybody has a rookie they like the only problem it is AFTER the draft if Ireland hit on every pick hes a genius but u miss one here or there and u suck easy to do after the fact suck it up u r no gm leave it to the pros Ireland is not that bad u could have the gm from the jags

We're due for a good game. I think we finally win again in Foxboro. At least I can sit there without snow being thrown all around after every touchdown. Offense is going to click, defense is going to click....somebody wake me up after its all over.

I don't agree with the idea you need to bring in players to push others. If the player needs to be pushed to perform, even if they do perform better it won't last long at all.

Tell me who pushed Marino, Elway, Kelly, Moon, Manning, Brady....

I'm not expecting Marino, BUT, it's pretty clear he's not going to be elite. Good maybe, which might be enough, but he's not an elite guy, or we would have seen it.

Right now, he reminds me a little of Fiedler. Great athlete, lots of potential, not the savior, and lots of mistakes. He's young...hopefully he'll grow.

Right now this sounds a lot like MATT SHUAB to me. No matter what the Texans placed around him, he was good, but never quite good enough. This is my greatest fear with Tannehill.

We finally place the right pieces around him, then at best, a few one and done or 2nd rd playoff appearances. That isn't exactly what diehard dolfans are looking for either.

The first time I ever heard Philbin speak publicly after being hired, I was thinking, "if this guy coaches as bad as he presents himself we are in deep doo doo." My fears are being realized. And every time this guy opens his mouth there is more testimony to his being a clueless goofball.

I'm a left tackle," McKinnie said. "All I've ever played. I've never taken a snap at right tackle."

So, again, when McKinnie is up to speed and ready to play, he is the left tackle and Martin will move to right tackle.

F4L,

I believe Freeman was being mishandled in Tampa. He is a lot better than people give him credit for.

I happen to agree with you here I remember when he came out of Kansas St. a real rocket armed guy with effective mobility (faster Culpepper) if needed. Miss-Used and wasted in Tampa on 2 BAD Coaching Staffs. Hard admitting it when the Staff is so UM HEAVY but there BAD! The Vikes have the kind of speed at WR that Freemen never had in Tampa along with the BADDEST RB in this MODERN ERA BARR NONE!

Hell, we don't want to run anything here(as if we could, or want). But every Fan knows when there is something wrong and now we can write our opinion about it. More, even if probably none in these Blogs have ever been an NFL Coach, there is a lot of Football knowledge here and we can go so far as to delve into the causes of the problem at hand from different minds. Anybody that rejects this fact in this Day and Age, no matter who they are, must be labeled a fool. Even when Shula was dismissed from here, a case could be made that if we Fans had had Social Media as it is now at that time, that could have been prevented. MO

After 6 seasons, I am thoroughly convinced Jeff Ireland isn't the guy for personnel nor coaching searches.

How many more incompetent Jeff Ireland seasons do the rest of you need?

Ross, Ireland, Philbin, and Tannehill are all incompetent at their positions. Thats a HUGE problem.

NFL level players are intelligent and experienced enough to recognize when there is good or bad leadership and coaching in the organization they play for. That is why the Dolphins players often look flat and uninspired... they now recognize that there are a bunch of clowns calling the shots in this franchise.

Ireland passed on Boldin, Dez Bryant. Shipped out Marshall. That's a pro bowl list of its own.

Just do a little revisionist history. Jeff Ireland has passed or shipped out over 2 dozen pro bowlers in 6 seasons at Miami. Yet, we still starve for enough REAL talent.

JOE philbin is full of crap when he talks he reminds me of mr.obama. This team has tons of talent and little guidance from yhe coaches. You are about to lose the locker room soon. keep up the great coaching job. I hope we can get a better one next year unfortunetly. I had bought into this regime because i love the miami dophins next week we. go to 4 straight loses mike sherman needs to be sent to a nursing home for the lack of brains he shows us every week. Thanks for the tease mr ross & gang

If Ireland kept, drafted, or signed 1/3 of the talent we could have had here. We may already be a perennial playoff team.

Marshall is a whacked out locker room cancer. The only guy he can work with is Cutler. Still, not a playoff on his resume.

Boldin wouldn't have been effective with our QB's.

Dez, I agree, a true alpha receiver we should have taken. Maybe even Earl Thomas, there were a few stellar players in the top 20 picks that year.

james rice, Ireland selects the coaches, Ireland selects the talent.

You really don't want Ireland choosing the next hc, do you?

The Dullfins get rid of their best players every year and Irescum cant come close to replacing them.

We're due for a good game. I think we finally win again in Foxboro. At least I can sit there without snow being thrown all around after every touchdown. Offense is going to click, defense is going to click....somebody wake me up after its all over.

massfish | October 22, 2013 at 08:00 PM

Or a Con on work release with a snow blower clearing a path for Pats Kickers on Field Goals! God I'll NEVER forget that game although we CRUSHED them later in Miami on the payback with our own snow blower on the field, very comical!

Bodine, I'm speaking of when Boldin first became a fa and was still in his prime. He was screaming he would love to become a Miami Dolphin.

Yet, his screams fell upon Ireland's deaf ear.

You know Jake Long has got to be laughing.

Ireland wanted Ocho Cinco over Boldin lol

sam good point back to fireland and a clean sweep afain these guys make tony s look smart . Hate this bs.we cant get good mgmt.

The Kiss of Death! And my worry is it's already happened with that flat showing at home to start the Div. push! Although it must be surreal to have about 45,000 in the stands with so many empty seats and half in attendance rooting for your opponent. JRS has unfortunately become a neutral site! Alot of people have just quit going and I'm among them but lay it on a decade of futility preferring to be heart broken by a mediocre Org. for free on TV. I still get out to a few but they've been fewer per lately with maybe 2 games I'll see this Yr. (N.E. & N.Y.)

I think it is clear this is not a move the team WANTED to make but feels compelled to make. They held out hope that there would be improvement, especially from Clabo. It didn't happen. This is to protect Tannehill. I do not think he is the problem overall. He did come out stinking at the very start of the Buffalo game, but improved dramatically from then on out. He has a QB rating at 83.1. A very solid bump from last year and it will get better if we can get decent line play.

Ireland is working secretly under the table for all the other NFL teams sending them good talent who were formerly Dolphins.

Does anybody know how our former HCs, OCs, and DCs are doing with their new teams compared to the losers we have now?

I said this last year when we started the season with no receiving core outside of Hartline and Bess, Ireland has Ross convinced that a slow steady rebuild is the way to go and that constantly changing coaches is the problem in Miami.

Ross really doesn't know a thing about football so I think he has bought into this. Ireland sacrificed Sporano to get "his coaching staff" and laid out a plan to get the players they needed to run their scheme. Ireland most likely laid out how long this rebuild would take and based on the state of things I bet it is longer than two years. Unfortunately for everyone it looks like that plan will be behind schedule because the OC is horrible.

I wouldnt give a dome to that cheap SOB Ross and his loser team. He's buried this franchise 10 ft under yet has the balls to ask for charity from hardworking taxpayers. We have zero chance while he's owner. I dont know how he does for his ownership partners but he's a horrible owner for the fans.

So the euphoria of 3-0 is now looking like 3-4.

Will the team be able to pull it together after a 4 game losing streak?

Things are moving right on schedule. There should be no surprise.

How bout a 5 year losing streak? Give Ireland an extension! HAHAHA

F4L HAVE YOU GONE TO COUNCELING FOR YOUR ANGER ISSUES??????

I have stated on here several times that Philbin does not like heroes. When I said it, I thought it was a good plan.I have seen the light and I know it is not a good plan.

Listen to the players; "We all help each other out in the tight end room". I say to hell with that. They should be trying to beat the other guy out. Communism does not work in politics and it does not work in football. People who like to compete excel. People who like to fit in, fit in and get their butts kicked on gameday.

We need Regan running this team, not Obama

ALoco my friend.

Any snow yet?

Do you enjoy shoveling snow?

Armando,

Philbin's statement about the timing of McKinnie's trade could have been honest for any number of reasons. This, in addition to what the earlier poster noted: You're kind of scouting for the Pats and NO, the Coaching Staff owes you no allegiance.

Baltimore's asking price was probably higher initially. It usually is in these instances.

Also, the Coaching staff(For WHATEVER REASONS)might have felt that the bye week would offer a chance for the O-Line to get healthy and to start working together as a unit finally. They did show some improvement, the best rushing stats to date. But I for one wasn't surprised to see it wasn't going to be good enough.

I had reservations about this years O-Line from the start. Questioning the smarts of putting all of our LT Eggs in Martin's basket.

I believe I was one of the loudest in calling for McKinnie way back in the summer. It was a desperate move then, a desperate move now and that's how desperate I think we've been since Ireland addressed other needs in the draft.

Here's to hoping for the best!

PS: As bad as ANYONE wants to say McKinnie is, unfortunately, he's still a **MAJOR** upgrade for **Our O-Line**.

On twitter-
Joe Philbin is aware of the go, go go snap cadence. Says he's not worried about it.

Does this seem a bit concerning to anyone else?

Martin had to be REALLY REALLY bad. YIKES!

Only one here I remember liking Luke Kuechly was odin and when he pointed him out to me, I jumped on his bandwagon.

Real life is not a video game. To expect someone to trade teams mid season and play well his first start is absurd. Specially when we are talking about a QB. Football isn't a Plug and Play Sport. You train All week to play 1 Game. Preparation is Essential in the NFL.

If you can't understand that simple Fact. I can't help you.

I'm in the same boat but worse with a 2 hour drive. Bad enough to see a loss on TV but driving 2 hours (3 if you sit and cuss to the end) is torture. I don't think fans from out of driving range understand it.

Hi there Dashi!!

C'mon man! Really? There gonna gamble on this guy and think its going to work out why? Based on all their other stellar prior gambles? Enough is enough already.

Oh and Freeman? Really? He was inaccurate in Tampa, inaccurate in college and inaccurate last night.

Sherman = O line coach

Philbin = O line coach

Dolphins = worst O line in NFL

Coyle = horrific defensive coordinator

McKinnie = thank God, finally

So many of you complaining about the offense, but in my lowly opinion Coyle is the worst coach of them all. Just a couple of years ago we had a solid defense. We still have solid personnel, but the difference is we now have diarrhea for coaching.

So Ryno is in favor of keeping Clabo on the field and Martin at Left Tackle.

You must have the courage of your convictions Sir, and for that I.......yi-Yi.......uh.......

Well, alrighty then Ryno! Nice.....um.......good too........ah........

U Duh Man.......?

I predict that Exposingthefraud will die a virgin.

ALoco,

All those other guys sound so "Kool" when they add cities or states to their names. Like Miramar Dave! How Bad Ass is THAT?

Anywhoo, I was thinking that Sam guy could be like, "Daytona Sam".........the Twinks Guy could be like, "Twinks From Dayton".........and YOU......YOU could be something REALLY Kool like:

"Daytona is ALoco"

Huh? Yeah........you like that dont'cha?

People would be like: WHAT? Kah-Ray ZEE Daytona? I don't wanna mess with NO Kah-Ray ZEE Daytona's MAN!

See what I mean........?

I'm getting scared just THINKING about it!

There's nothing wrong wih the Dolphins a decent QB wouldnt fix.

We can always tank 2015 and get Famous Jameis Winston at FSU. I really-really believe this kid's the real deal. Has the size of Andrew Luck and far better than Luck was at the same point in their college careers.

Any team would be a fool not to tank 2014 for Winston. Just totally took Tajh Boyd to the woodshed. Boyd himself, many believe could be the 2nd qb taken in 2014's draft. He was no contest against Famous Jameis and the Seminole offense and defense.

@Mokey - Totally agree with you. The LBs have done nothing to impress me. Most tackles 5 + yards or more downfield, no constant pash rush, and horrible angles/tackling. Coaching is pathetic.

I'm not sure what I'm missing, but I don't understand the change to a 4-3. Seems we're better suited all around for the 3-4.

2014, 0-16, "Aim Us At Jameis"! Hear that Ross?

I'm not going to judge Coyle on this years start. He has to do a better job, we ALL do, but he's facing his share of adversity as well.

We've had some tough injuries and because of the rebuild, we don't have a lot of quality depth. Besides that, the offense(because of the O-Line IMO)has dumped a lot in their laps.

Week 1 we lose a starting Corner. Then Solia, who I think is one of the best. Then it's our Middle Linebacker, they're always tough blows. Then the leagues best Pass Rushing 4-3 end. That's not including all the other dents and dings(Like Misi, Wheeler, Clemons, Taylor and Davis).

Every team has injuries and they all have to deal with them. But being a young, rebuilding team without enough depth, I wouldn't crucify Coyle just yet.

Odinseye, Daytona? Am I missing something?

odinseye, Daytona? Am I missing something?

Posted by: Sam I Am | October 22, 2013 at 09:52 PM

Nah. I'm pretty sure its odinidiot thats missing something....a brain!!

Let me get this straight. Jeff Ireland is playing poker with Ozzie Newsome, who has been hands down the best GM in the last 20 years. My guess is that even for a late round pick, Jeff is going to be grabbing his ankles. Ozzie will NOT use Vaseline either.
