Dolphins' Mike Wallace: 'I'm definitely worried'

When the Dolphins signed Mike Wallace to the biggest contract in their team history -- $60 million over five years -- they bargained for a deep threat receiver who would blow the top off defenses with regularity.

It is something Wallace did often with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

But as the first quarter of this season is over and those big plays have not happened, Wallace is now concerned.

"I'm definitely worried about it because it's game four," Wallace said Wednesday. "I'm not paranoid or anything but in Week Four it's not the way I imagined my first four weeks going. Definitely not. I'm pretty sure it's not the way anybody imagined it going. So for myself, and starting with myself, [quarterback] Ryan [Tannehill] and coaches, we all got to do a better job and find a way to make it work."

This is not to suggest Wallace being on the Dolphins isn't working. He's caught 15 passes for 176 yards and one touchdown. But his longest play was 34 yards and his 11.7 yard per catch average is well below the 17.2 yard per catch average he had before he arrived in Miami.

"I got to make big plays," Wallace said. "That's my main thing. I've been used to making big plays. And I definitely, definitely can make big plays. That's what I do. That's why I came here. That's why they signed me. It just hasn't happened so far for one reason or another."

Wallace is proven after four NFL seasons. He works hard. The talent vampire didn't suddenly drain him of his skills in the time since he left the Pittsburgh Steelers.

But the Dolphins' system doesn't seem to be a fit and his chemistry with Tannehill isn't the best. Indeed, Tannehill seems much more comfortable throwing the football to Brian Hartline and even Brandon Gibson, who also came to Miami in the offseason.

No one outside the Dolphins knows why that is. And if the Dolphins know why, they're not saying. But this much is clear, the current trend is not acceptable for Wallace.

"I know one thing, we not going to be able to go through a whole year like that," he said. "We have to make big plays. We have to back defenses up. That's what we have to do. Extra film work, different plays, whatever it is, whatever it's going to take, we have to get it done. We have to make big plays."

This current big-play drought doesn't mean Wallace is suffering from a sudden lack of confidence. He doesn't lack for that at all.

"I know I can do it," Wallace said.

But how fast it's done is now important for him as it should be for the Dolphins because the season is starting to leak away. So I asked Wallaced if his current worry would indeed grow to that "paranoid" state he mentioned if things don't change in the coming weeks and certainly by the middle of the season.

"Definitely," he said. "Then definitely something's wrong. And we're almost there. We only have four more games before that. We're already four games in. We don't have too much longer to figure it out. We got to make it happen. I don't know what we have to do. Hard work, I guess, by everybody."

First!! I knew this was coming, everyone saw this coming. And you know what I agree with him. Yeah he drops certain passes, BUT...how many times has he beaten his man, and that pass is never on the money IN STRIDE!

He had one IN STRIDE Monday night and let the freaking thing go straight through his butter fingers... catch that ball and the Dolphins have a TD... stop his complaining and put up or shut up...

The one down the sideline this past week, he clearly dropped and that was on him. He would tell you that. But.....if the pass is out 5 yards in front, its a TD. Ball was slightly underthrown.

Wallace doesn't know what he need to do but I do what about to start making catches that long pass that went thru his hand was a killer for us on Monday Night
Also the OC should call at least 2 or 3 long passes per game that what good teams do

Phillie it was dead money in his hands.... the throw was PERFECT.... stop making excuses for him... make the plays and stop whining.... plus he dropped another one to across the middle that yes it was tipped very little. GOOD receivers catch that one... he calls himself GREAT... so he should have had it easy.

Stop running your mouth Mike Wallace and catch the damn ball

Totally agree. Put the ball in front of him on the fly. If he drops it then we know. But if he has to play patty cake with the defender, the odds of a guy catching it goes down drastically.

PHILLIE,

Exactly!

Go Phins!!!

scott...well stated my friend. Many fans out there afraid to admit the obvious!
And by the way @odds, it's not some high schooler Tanny is throwing the ball, it's the 60 million dollar man. Wallace is being paid hella lotta money to MAKE THINGS HAPPEN, NOT WAIT FOR THINGS TO HAPPEN FOR HIM!

Finz.... instead they want to blame Tannehill... They would rather kiss Wallace's feet because his feelings may get hurt.... too many Tannehill haters

The problem , as I see it , is Mike Sherman. Bring him in as OC for Tannehill's rookie year made sense , but they need a more creative offensive coordinator to maximize the talent on this offense -- both through the air and on the ground.

Scott watch the freakin replay. He has the guy beat and has to break stride to wait for the ball. I like Tannehill, think he is finally the answer for us. But anybody that knows football can watch that play again and know that if the pass is 5 yards out in front he's still f'n running with the ball. Now, he does need to catch that ball though. That said, it was far from a perfect pass and if he does catch it the way the ball was thrown, would of been a good chunk play but not a TD.

The offensive line has to be able to give Tannehill time to throw the deep ball but it would be nice to see us take a few more shots down the field each game.

Wallace hates TanneBust LOL

Wallace knows more than he's saying. Only problem is, he really shouldn't talk with his poor performance Monday night.

Tannehill just isnt a pro QB. A good QB makes everyone around them better. Tannehill makes everyone worse.

hilarious....u guys want Tanny to hand Wallace the football on a deep pass!!! Really? Even if he just catches the damn ball, it moves the chains. How many passes has Hartline had to adjust, behind him, or Gibson above his head, yet they catch the ball. Wallace's effort literally SUCKED out there on the field vs a potential Super Bowl contender, on national tv.

I think we need to get Wallace and Miller involved in more screen passes not just deep balls. How many times did Matt Ryan throw the wr screen to Jones, how many times does Manning throw it to Thomas or Decker, Brady with Welker over the years? Alot of ways to get ur guy involved without a straight up bomb. Stretch the D vertically but also from sideline to sideline. Guys with Wallace and Miller's type speed just need a crease and they are capable of finding the house on any given play. Plus those are quick passes that help the o-line and prevent sacks.

That falls on Sherman though. Not impressed with his playcalling thus far. Didnt use Reggie the right way last year, not using Wallace and Miller right so far thru 4 games this year.

Go fins! 4-1 going into bye week would be sweet!

Tannehill played well the first 3 games. He funked it against Brees and the Saints. He wasn't the only one.

I just hope Wallace puts as much effort into practice as into these media interviews. If Hartline could rack up 1000 yds with RT, then RT can throw the ball. Room for improvement I'm sure, but not an issue. They just need to grow into each other.

Wallace is saying all the right things. He didn't say nothing controversial. This sounds more like a Fishing expedition than anything.

A want to create a controversy where one doesn't exist. Propaganda.

Wallace is accepting blame for his performance and said he needs to get better.

Ask, Pounce how he Feels about the O-line giving up 50 sacks. I bet Pounce will say he is worried.

Ask Grimes how he feels about only having 1 Pick. I bet he would say he is worried.

Dashi as a Fan would be worried if any of the Fins weren't worried about the way the Team is playing.

I am more worried with the sublime reporting of my favorite team. Than the Performance of my favorite team from week to week.

And PS - can someone please explain the Philbin obsession with not switching wideouts and corners from left to right? Does he have Asperger's or something? WTF?

This is what Incog said about current rate of sacks....

"If we give up 72 sacks, everybody should be fired. The whole offensive line," said Incognito, who has started the past three seasons at left guard for the Dolphins. "If [Ryan Tannehill] gets sacked 72 times there is obviously a major problem. I don't think anybody can handle that many sacks."

Maybe I'm seeing something that's not there. i'd appreciate your feedback. Live in Greenville, SC now after being a Dolphins' Season Ticket holder for years. There is a defensive end up here named Clownery who will probably be the Number 1 Pick and who talked this off season about seeing fear in certain QB's eyes. Am I imagining this or am I starting to see some trepidation in our QB. There just appears to be a deer in the headlight's demeanor to this guy. Maybe if any QB played behind THIS offensive line he would have the same look but I don't know if you will ever be able to win big with it. If I'm wrong, call me out. I handle criticism and learn from it.

Wallace needs to stop looking at safeties and get his head around out of his Break. Also needs to carry his slants and crosses farther. He did neither Monday and it killed them. Thats also why the qb doesnt trust him.

Tanny is holding the ball way too long. Time to switch to Matt Moore.

Sublime is to pretty a word. Meant to say atrocious. Please forgive Dashi for such an egregious error.

WHO SWITCHED THE FOCUS TO WALLACE?

Iowa Phin Fan, Good point. I actually believe he trusts Hartline to such a degree because he gets open quicker and Tannehill knows he won't have much time with this group. I would suggest a little zone read but that probably just gets him killed or battle fatigued Unable To Perform.

dashi, I'm new to this Forum but if it is like others, the real FANaticS will be those who wave pom poms and the BAD FANaticS will be those who realize 1973 was 40 years ago and Richard Nixon was the President and Barrack Obama was 12. A Little Urgency, PLEASE!!

TANNE DOESN'T THROW TO WALLACE BECAUSE WALLACE IS UNRELIABLE

And Tanne is not a gunslinger, he throws passes for a reason.

Clearly Mike Wallace and Tannehill are not there yet. Even a blind man can see that Wallace has to slow down to make an attempt to catch the ball. Good recovery by the defender on monday night, the same thing happened in Cleveland. Their timing is waay off. Plus, I don't think that they use him as much as they should. I'm constantly seeing Aj Green and Dez Bryant making plays all over the field. This is how we need to use him

Tannehill's biggest weakness has always been his long ball trajectory. He has a strong arm, but his trajectory is almost always flat. This makes it extremely difficult to loft a deep ball that receivers can run under. It is what it is.

DOES ANYONE UNDERSTAND TIME AND SPACE? IT TAKES TIME FOR WALLACE AND THE BALL TO MEET IN SPACE,
Time the o-line does not provide.

I haven't heard any complaints about the o-line coach.

Is the fins o-line that bad?

How much of the problem is on the o-line coach?

With one more second Tannehill can find his receivers. His rating was under 60 this past game. No playoffs if he keeps that up.

Lou, Tannehill has some confidence problems. Which if you pay attention to his facial expressions, might look like a 'deer in the headlights'. I remember a game (Cleveland?) that the TV cam did a sideline closeup and he had one of his fingers in his mouth. Not the picture of confidence you'd want to convey.

Not a Tannehill hater, rather the opposite just telling the truth

What can we do about this situation? odin proposed throwing deep more often to Wallace which I agreed with. Other options?

Oscar, along with the deep ball to Wallace. More screens and things like against the Colts. Just more targets in general I guess.

what we need an offance of line that can control the line for running and pass blocking ten isnt comfertable in the pocket to make thoose throws

=======================================================What the hell is that supposed to mean?

It won't happen this season. And it won't happen with Tannehill at QB. Dolphins only hope is that he is injured, because he sure won't be pulled in this political face saving league.

On Dolphins opening drive with 3rd and less than an inch at the Saints 8, the Saints' DL shifts, providing a clear crease for Tannehill to just take snap without even changing the line call and making the first down. He goes with play sent in and you saw the results. I was not expecting any intricate checkdown but any QB has the option to just take it and go when he sees that. Third and less than an INCH!!!!

This is for all those on the Wallace bandwagon:
After 4 games this season, Bess has 4 more catches and basically same yards, but WHO'S GETTING PAID?????

Davone Bess WR CLE 19 177 (ranked 68th)
Mike Wallace WR MIA 15 176 (ranked 69th)

BTW, we have 2 receivers in the top 50, nope, neither of which are Wallace.

Maybe Wallace isn't as good with %'s as he is with dollars....4 games thru the season means 25% of the season is over. So when does he plan to contribute...game 8??? Is that when he worries!?!?!?!

Well, IMO, everybody sukkked in that NO game, including the whole O line, the TEs, the WRs, the RBs, the QB, the water boy, the whole D, and most especially our Coaches.

Lou..why u gotta bring up 3 and inches??? Even Chucky (Jon Gruden) didn't like that call. LOL

3-1 right??? Okay...just checking...

What are you talking about? Tannehill dropped a huge pass right in your bucket! But your bucket had a big hole in the bottom. I never see you guys talking on the sidelines during games. You and the rest of the WR should be evaluating the CB on every play and going back to Tanny once you see a trend that you guys could exploit and make it happen!! Tannehill needs to learn how to out smart or manipulate CB and safeties into making mistakes. Either with his eyes or pumps.

On 3rd and Inch (not inches) we definetely had to sneak it there. If u are going to call that dumba55 run, why not go with the guy who already had racked up 30+ yards on the drive?

Shermanator strikes again!

fginzfan, As soon as I see Gruden's face, I hit the "mute' button. We don't have these Phi Beta Kappas telling us what happens when we attend games and we certainly don't need them to tell us what is going on when watching in HD. Mute the game, put on some jazz(or your choice) and only go to the volume when you need a penalty call explained or to hear crowd periodically. Trust me!! You will enjoy it!!

Ravens will decide our Season. We lose. we lose from there on end, perhaps 6-10. We win, we can go 10-6. We'll see. GN

The Saints game got away from them...all of them...except Solia...that's a man...the 3rd and nuthair...the fumble, the pick, the drop, the 3 and out...the no defense...you couldn't TRY to make that many mistakes in another game...they got it out of the way and to a non-conference opponent...plus that is pretty DAMN good Saints team...its not like we got handled by the RAMS!!! Woo!!! On to Baltimore!!! When did Wallace say this??? Shyt son STFU and get ready for Baltimore...

This team is garbage!!!! We got lucky the first three games.......We will lose the next three. Count on it.

stop obsessing over that one throw on Monday night.....reality is that they havent integrated Wallace into the offense all that much, or enough anyway.....havent thrown his way enough, designed enough plays where he's the primary receiver.....even that long throw vs Indy shouldve been a TD but he was stopped at the 1 because he had to wait for the ball, it was underthrown (go watch)--cmon, cant be throwing to Gibson and Hartline twice as often as Wallace--he aint crying, aint complaining.....he's the best WR we have, our best offensive player.....get him the ball, alot.

FuKC Mike WALLACE. Go work for 60 minutes with your 60 million prick. Guy is such a baby and Ryan put that deep pass right on the money. Wallace is soft and Hartline deserves the money as he never drops anything. If I was Sherman I would tell his sissy ass to run down the field every play since he draws extra defenders then I would throw it to Hartline. I can not stand Wallace and I hope he continues to drop perfect passes so Miami ships his ass to the Rams so he can play with that other FA Loser Jake Long. Out with the old in with the new. Those scrubs that are playing in NE are looking pretty good right now and they are a making what...250k per year..LMAO

Finzan you are an idiot!!

Hartline sure had a hard time getting open last year with out Wallace.

Hartline was targeted 13 X's against the Jets and only had 2 CATCHES!!

AND DONT EVEN MENTION THE SEA HAWKS GAME.

What is Gibson going to tell Tannehill on the side line??

HE GOT JAMMED AND BEAT UP ALL DAY LONG...

Wallace should be averaging 7-8 catches/game, like most of the top WRs (some average more)--and 10-11 targets.....every game--every game

how explosive is our offense gonna be if Gibson and Hartline are the primary targets/receivers.....getting the bulk of catches.....oh yeah, and Clay--sure, thats a real dynamic trio--solid/good/dependable possession receivers, but not playmakers--we saw how we did last year with Hartline leading the charge.....good player, I like him, but he's a weak #2/solid #3.....Gibson's a #3.....Clay is ok and improving, but not outrunning too many folks.....force it to Wallace.....please.

The Fins ran into a red hot Brees on Monday Night in his house. Payton and Ryan out coached our coaches flat out. Tannehill didn't protect the ball. On top of that our highest paid players were either hurt or didn't perform.

This is year two of the rebuild, letdowns will happen. That said I'm holding fast to my 10-6 prediction and vying for a wildcard.
