FOX: Martin 'flipped out,' leaves team

Jonathan Martin is doubtful for Thursday night's game with the Cincinnati Bengals because the Dolphins say he's dealing with an "illness."

Well, he's apparently dealing with more than that, according to FOX Sports 1, which just reported that Martin "kind of flipped out," and smashed a food tray on the floor of the team lunch room on Monday when a practical joke perpertrated by teammates didn't sit well with him.

Teammates apparently walked away from an ill Martin when he sat down near them in the lunch room. And not appreciating the joke, Martin went off ... like into the sunset.

And he hasn't returned to the team since.

The Herald has confirmed from two sources the story is accurate.

Martin is said to be getting "treatment" at a hospital for an unknown emotional issue, a Dolphins source confirmed for the Miami Herald. Martin checked himself into that hospital. The source declined further comment.

Martin, it must be noted, started the first six games of the season at left tackle and last week was abruptly moved to right tackle when the Dolphins traded for Bryant McKinnie.

At that time, Martin had hinted he was not thrilled with the move and said he faced a choice how to deal with it.

“You can approach this two different ways," Martin said last week. “You can go in the tank and be one of those guys who bitches and moans and is a cancer in the locker room, or you can be a guy who goes out there and can be a professional and plays as hard as I can."

But one source told The Herald he doesn't believe the move from one position to another is the reason Martin apparently "snapped." The source said the behavior is probably evidence of deeper issues.

The "treatment" Martin is seeking is apparently emotional treatment/counseling.

[Update 1: Martin has seemed "more aloof" in recent days prior to the incident Monday, a teammate just texted. This teammate said he's reached out to Martin and has been told the player is spending time with his family.]

Amazingly, the Dolphins listed a player who left the team, hasn't returned for two days and is in treatment as "doubtful" on today's injury report.

[Update 2: The Dolphins have released a statement on the matter: "Jonathan's Martin's status was addressed on the injury report as an illness." That is all the team has to say.]

Kris is correct

We still own his rights oscar

Get well J Martin.

oh kris kris kris. I'm glad you aren't part of any law enforcement agencies. Actually I wish you were that way I could get away with crap while you blame some ruffian

All we really need is 2 new tackles and maybe a center when pouncey goes to jail

now please engage me in football talk instead of worthless accusations and crap that hasn't pertained to any football point I've made

.Slam..So I see we are moving back to a 3-4.. Funny 2 years ago when that wasn't working that we were "better suited for a 4-3 team" Maybe we are(better suited for a 3-4) But you said I the coaches had a clue..This is the way it would be.

Darry Dunphy | October 30, 2013 at 02:18 PM

We haven't truly had 3/4 personnel since the days of Interim Bates replacing Wannstedt. The main stays at DT (LDT,RDT) on those teams were quicker gap shooters like Jeff Zgonina, Bryan Robinson, Larry Chester and even Tim Bowens before injury given his quick 1st step (before injury zapped his career) and of course Darryl Gardner. The DE's were David Bowens and JT, all waaay to undersized to play in the 3/4.

The culture changed in 05 when Saban made the switch and as fans we can hate on him plenty but he cemented the legacy of JT by making him a hybrid DE/OLB (adding Yrs and money with an NFL D-Player of the Yr. to his career accolades) The other DE of note in that ERA besides David Bowens was Ogunleye and both would have been run over like a freight train in the 3/4 at around 280 Pds and even lighter in the case of D.Bowens

In 05 we let D.Bowens walk (to the Jets) and brought in the 300 plus Kevin Carter along with the 340 plus Keith Traylor allowing the other (undersized) DT's to leave bringing in Vonnie Holiday who played both inside and outside in that scheme.

The difference was Saban ran a HYBRID version NEVER fully committing to one scheme realizing his pieces didn't fully fit what he wanted mainly because of the LB's and did a masterful job of having his D's ready on Sunday. I hate him like every Fin fan for his HIGH-N-DRY ACT but he Coached up his D well.

In the Parcells ERA more head scratching futility when we grab a 3/4 OLB (Dansby) to plug into the Middle and to make it worse last Yr. they wanted him to man the MLB spot alone were his coverage was terrible, it's lacked this Yr. but you guys must have forgotten what Dansby turning and running looked like??

Again this team to this day keeps grabbing players more fit for the 3/4 than the 4/3. It's what caught me so off guard by the D.Jordan pick, this kids a clone of Aldon Smith's and a wrecking ball in the 3/4 but we want to take away from his coverage ability to put him in a 3 point stance! I've read over and over about fitting round holes in square pegs but this is ridiculous!!

We must draft nothing but lineman next year every god damn pick

I thought you and the Dashi were tight, why all this hate now. Did someone massage you the wrong way? broader perspective please! Take the blinders off! now, how is Tannehill garbage again, enlighten my dumb bass

Of course he has to be weird, compared to the Neanderthals he has to play with.

I don't think there is anything wrong with this kid outside of a flu maybe? This is team is unraveling! It seemed very evident that when it started to go South last Sunday they all packed it in on this Coaching Staff!

Both our coordinators are total garbage coyle is a total joke his defense in never ready . Sherman is just being Sherman the brainiac

Offer Cowher full VP/GM/HC power...clean house(starting with Ireland) and the rest will fall into place.

We must draft in the top five to get a top tackle and there's a few of them

fin4life,

You make a lot of good points.

The coaches and GM are getting players then not using them correctly in defensive or offensive schemes. It doesn't make sense. An organization should be able to be on one page in terms putting players in a positions to use their strengths.

Somebody please tell Sherman "If I was the General Manager I would cut you today!!!!" ;)

Rob Ryan sounds good

I wonder who the teammates were who so bothered Martin?

Of course he has to be weird, compared to the Neanderthals he has to play with.

oscar canosa | October 30, 2013 at 07:29 PM

Your probably more right than you know, I remember reading in his Bio after we drafted him that before Graduating from Stanford he was accepted into Harvard Graduate School which he put on hold to play Pro Football sounds like the kids a Brainiac!

Rob Ryan. Why not, as long as Ireland, Sherman and Coyle go to Im fine with that.

This guy and his family, as highly Educated that they are, Jack!, do not believe that anybody own their rights. He could easily go into Law School and forget all about the Dolphins.

We won't win another game

Very true Oscar I see your point

On defense, I believe the problem is not the D-line at all, but is the zone coverage scheme. Now, I am not against it but you have to mix your coverage's up. Play some press now and then, when it makes sense, it should make it easier to disguise some corner and safety blitz packages.

POST OF THE YEAR

Offer Cowher full VP/GM/HC power...clean house(starting with Ireland) and the rest will fall into place.

NHFINSFAN | October 30, 2013 at 07:33 PM

Only if he's bringing Art Rooney Jr. with him whose the Architect behind those Pitt. teams.

Listen, f4l, don't patronize me. You fully well know I am a Psychiatrist and I know JMart's psychological profile way before you found out about it 1/2 an hour ago.., btw, I know yours too.

Great, another wasted 2nd rd Ireland pick. I'm sure this kid never wants to play in a Dolphin uniform again!

Jackoff1 says - "This is the earliest I ever started looking at draft eligable players"

You must have been really positive then when the Dolphins were sitting at 0-7 in 2011.

Cower will never ever come here!!!!!!

Joe Philbin should be fired.

Let's not talk the cam Cameron era

This guy and his family, as highly Educated that they are, Jack!, do not believe that anybody own their rights. He could easily go into Law School and forget all about the Dolphins.

oscar canosa | October 30, 2013 at 07:39 PM

I read that as well Oscar seems both Parents also attended Graduate School. I doubt they'll want him to walk in this fashion though but could see him asking to be traded or out right let go and before anybody laughs I'm sure there is at least one team out there that would give low compensation for him and even more that would give him a look if out right released.

The Giants have no Tackles, the Broncos have both on IR and Peyton is beginning to ache ect...

This team had very high expectations it nothing like 2011 this team was labeled a playoff team , well we know that's not happening . Truth of the matter is I don't see many more wins this year

Way back on September 23rd, Armando wrote about the Dolphins defeating Atlanta the day before:

"There was general manager Jeff Ireland accepting congratulations for his role in putting this team together."

"There was that exit out of the locker room earlier by team owner Stephen Ross when he confidently announced, 'We got a damn good football team.'"

Four games later, how things have changed. Reality has come home to the Dolphins.

Jake Mathews would make a nice pick for us, 6-8 325 lbs great bloodlines

This stuff doesn't happen in movies. Ross clean house. This team won't be in miami much longer

If Jeff Ireland had been given less managerial responsibilities, he would have had more time to make better decisions on the offensive line. It's really not his fault that he had so much on his plate that a few things fell through the cracks.

Please tank. Do not win another game. No more meaningless wins. Lets do it right this year and set us up next year for our new gm

We got a damn bad football team Mr. Ross and Fumblehill is about to get killed on Thursday.night in front of the whole nation

oscar canosa | October 30, 2013 at 07:46 PM

What are you talking about and what's your problem?? You don't think I read up on him after we drafted him all the way to his pulling trucks this Off-Season in Northern Cali to get into more Pro shape or the rave reviews he got at Stanford for his intelligence. Ask anybody whose a regular here cause someone must remember me being one of the few in this kids camp and alot of it I was basing on his smarts!

I hope Martin gets whatever's bugging him sorted out for his sake.

This team desparately needs a win right now

Loose for jake

we aren't trading Martin, sorry to ruin your fun. there is no compensation or player that we would realistically gain that would be any kind of benefit over Martin

Well Jeff Ireland:

'Another on down another one gone another one bites the dust'

Marc whole nation? Nfl network awful booth team and nobody ever watches a.miam game outside us diehards . Imagine how bad mnf looks next week with mia at tampa.Just pleaseeeee lose rest of games . That would force ross hands

Jake Mathews would make a nice pick for us, 6-8 325 lbs great bloodlines

Marc from nj | October 30, 2013 at 07:53 PM

Wait for the combine and look him up, he's a RT all the way and is playing LT this Yr. because Joeckel is in Jax. His lateral movement was exposed like a cheap suit by Alabama were Manziel was harassed all day from the blindside and is very liable in the Auburn loss as well. If the SEC speed rushers get him he'll be toast in the NFL on the Left. He will be a RT mark my words, the better LT will be Taylor Lewan another Michigan kid who happens to wear #77!

When will Miami ever have coaches who fit scheme to players and not players to scheme?

Don Shula comes to mind. Actually, more recently John Fox, and staff, creating an offense for Tim Tebow in Denver.

You know what an existential choice is, f4l? A choice between something, usually $, and your Self. Apparently you didn't read my post well. This guy doesn't need any $, contrary to Most others.

This issue pushes the moral of this team even further down the tubes.

Philbin lives in this holy dream world, where good, honest players listen to his every word and win games, wrong. He zero people skills, or football skills as it turns out.

He reminds me so much of Cam Cameron. Players are people, they are flawed and need direction and leadership. Ross amazes me that he has become a billionaire with so little abilty to spot talent.

Before the season is over there may very well be more Miami Dolphins choosing Therapy over playing for the Dolphins.

Maybe Ryan Tannehill should look into wearing a uniform made of bubble wrap for the Bengals game.

I think the coach who would be right for this team at this time, is John Gruden. I think with the pieces we have, he could get the most out of it. Without blowing up the whole team in the process

we aren't trading Martin, sorry to ruin your fun. there is no compensation or player that we would realistically gain that would be any kind of benefit over Martin

Florida #1 Education | October 30, 2013 at 07:57 PM

I'm not saying that we will do this but stating what he may ask for and realistically I remember Wannstedt cutting then Pro Bowl DT Darryl Gardner for less. Your right we would get nothing comparable but it's a fact he's abandoned the team! As in gone Home! The only thing they can do to him realistically is with-hold his pay check

This is about to get ugly folks. When I say ugly i mean pointing fingers inside the locker room will start. If the Phins lose tomorrow night this "organization" will implode. There are a lot of leaks coming out.

The pressure to win is enormous, but according to everything we're reading here and on twitter from multiple sources this team is on the verge of a collapse.

I wish Jonathan Martin nothing but the best. Mental health issues are nothing to laugh at. The past two years he's been yo-yo-ed between RT and LT. I guess the "prank" finally pushed him too far.

The buttoned up, mouth zipped and 4 game losing streak after a 3-0 start is about to blow and you can only point the finger at the Coaching and management.

It's starting to feel like it would be better to just give a crap about this team and disassociate. Would be a lot easier than constantly suffering. We finally know what the Bucs, Lions, Cardinals suffered through for decades.

No on Cowher! Don't need another burned out, maybe I'll return for a bunch of money just to quit in a year guy again... (see J.Johnson, Parcells etc.)

Who cares what they do with Martin. Hes awful
