Dolphins starting to string embarrassments together

How has this Dolphins season, only seven games old, already been something of an embarrassment?

Consider:

We start with Mike Pouncey pictured wearing a cap requesting the release of suspected murderer Aaron Hernandez. The picture hits the Internet and causes a public outrage. When Pouncey wants to apologize for photo to quell the public indignation, as his brother Maurkice immediately did on the advice of his team the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Dolphins forbid the center from saying anything. They apparently think saying nothing will make those offended feel better.

They also forbid Pouncey from saying anything after is subpoenaed to testify in front of a Grand Jury in relation to the Hernandez trial. Glad to see the team learned a lesson. Not really.

Right tackle Jonathan Martin on Monday then goes AWOL from the team when he gets upset over a lunchroom prank by teammates. He hasn't been around for three days. But the Dolphins, who refuse to acknowlege the national story, list Martin as doubtful for tonight's game against Cincinnati.

Defensive tackle Randy Starks, upset he is demoted from his starting job after going to the Pro Bowl last year, celebrates a sack by shooting his bench a one-fingered salute. The player denies it publicly, but the gesture was aimed at the coaching staff.

It took receiver Mike Wallace one game to show his unhappiness with the Dolphins game plan when he wasn't targetted at all in the first half of the season opener and only five times all game. Wallace, by the way, has toned down his distaste for how he's being used publicly but not so much privately.

Other players are also questioning the approach of offensive coordinator Mike Sherman. Guard Richie Incognito is unhappy Sherman stopped calling running plays in the second half of the New England loss and has been public about the Dolphins abandoning that which was working.

"I think we should just keep running the football 30, 40 times a game," Incognito says. "That's our blueprint for success. We have to run the football for four quarters."

The dislike for Sherman's play-calling can be found throughout the Dolphins organization. One high-ranking person within the team is dumbfounded by Sherman's approach in some situations, saying the coach misses "101 stuff" -- meaning fundamental things.

Coach Joe Philbin's relationship with the media has grown tense and, earlier this week, even combative. It wasn't that way last year even during a 7-9 season. The difference this year is the increased influence of Executive Vice President of Football Administration Dawn Aponte, a member of the New York State bar and a Bill Parcells disciple. Aponte, originally hired to manage the salary cap underJeff Ireland, got from under the general manager's umbrella when the two clashed. She has become a close Philbin ally.

Aponte shadows Philbin during television interviews, radio interviews and press conferences. During one recent taping of Philbin's coaches' show, she stopped the taping to straighten the coach's tie.

The second-year coach meets with Aponte before every press conference and accepts advice on what to say to the media. Can you ever imagine Don Shula doing this? Aponte's typical advice is for Philbin to say as little as possible even though the mission statement from team owner Stephen Ross, Philbin's and Aponte's boss, was to have the Dolphins become a more transparent and fan-friendly organization after the Parcells departure.

Bottom line?

The Dolphins are trying to be just as insulated since the Parcells departure as before because Aponte believes in the approach. Except these Dolphins should probably concentrate more on improving their play than they do at honing their message. Except neither Aponte nor Philbin have any of Bill Parcells' credibility for winning anything, much less multiple Super Bowls.

And it doesn't look like that will change this season.

You jumped on the WRONG Bandwagon.

That look in the Dolphin's eye's was one of disbelief! They couldn't believe this was actually a non-biased officiating crew.

The officiating crew made WAY more plays than Brady, Bellicheat and all the Patriots put together.

This Martin thing is ridiculous, but lets keep things in perspective. The patriots didn't beat us in any way, shape or form. Not last Sunday anyways.

I think almost everybody on this board agreed last year to give Tannehill this year to see signs that he was a keeper.
My fear and some others as well is he isn't getting the training he needs. Add constant hurries/hits/sacks and to me, he hasn't got a chance.

Odin I don't actually think you're kris I'm just using kris' logic to make a point

No problem, I knew that.

I just wanted to make fun of Martin for smashing his food tray and storming out of the building.

This stuff never happened to coach Shula this coach is a fraud

"I just wanted to make fun of Martin for smashing his food tray and storming out of the building."

lol it was a perfect reference to make

Stillhardcore,

Garner can't play outside. He doesn't have the agility to play tackle.

I thought he was going to be the "Surprise Player" of the year, but........shows how much I know.

odinseye | October 31, 2013 at 05:13 PM

I envisioned RG were he did well in 2 stints for the team with J.Jerry (who supposedly came in to Camp in great shape) at RT and after the Clabo signing I figured BMA for the job in what looked like a team strength on the rightside for once. My BIG roll of the dice came with believing everything I was reading about the Off-Season work ethic of Martin (he was my surprise player) and debated with you plenty about it cause you didn't trust it and your not only right but now the guys gone AWOL in the make-or-break game of this Yr. (In my mind further evidence of how far Philbin's lost his Locker room)

I feel bad for Martin. I hope he takes his time to get well. Mental Health is a very serious illness, so lets hope this is not the case.

As for Philman - I think we got a DUD!

So you feel sorry for the p u s s y be-atch millionaire that couldn't take a little joke. The one that lets down his entire team with the season on the line.

But nothing but disdain for the poor guy that has to try and coach the weak littl be-atch up.......?

OK, got it..........

curiously, how would cutting Martin help this team? only positive is he won't freak out anymore but he isn't a cancer in the lockeroomc...he's just a puss

Our o-line is that of an expansion team it's the worst line I have seen in 40 years in any level of football

Martin is a quitter enough said

Hey...everyone wanted everyone to have their rights and here is what is happening.

Listen, any Team can win any particular Game even against the most improbable odds and under the most improbable circumstances and neither of those tonight are that huge that we can't overcome them. We CAN win this Game. Yes, we can.

4 losses in a row, THILL getting pounded with almost 40 sacks in 7 games, Pouncey and his legal ties to Hernandez, now Martin melting down....this is becoming a real circus.

This is where a REAL coach steps up and takes control of his team. Philbin loses this game and he will lose this locker room and lose the season.

That happens and he should lose his job!

They step up and win this game....the team is 4-4 at half way point and that is not so bad. This game is really important!

Go back to law school but what happens if the judge gets him mad ,does he throw his briefcase and leave the court room

THE HIGH WATER MARK OF TANNE'S CAREER WAS THE ATL GAME

I expect Tanne to get benched tonight after his 2nd turnover of the game.

I do not expect Tanne to take a leadership role, hoist the team upon his shoulders and carry them to victory but good for him if he can do it.

It's going to be a slaughter. We play horrible at home.

I think almost everybody on this board agreed last year to give Tannehill this year to see signs that he was a keeper.
My fear and some others as well is he isn't getting the training he needs. Add constant hurries/hits/sacks and to me, he hasn't got a chance.

cocoajoe | October 31, 2013 at 05:45 PM

I believe the problem far more serious! I don't think given this OL that you can properly gauge what he can be. Last Yr. it was the WR's this Yr. it's the line and the scheme which isn't helping matters. As for Philbin I've seen all I need to see he has the most talented team we've had in Miami for quite some time and their sputtering! I don't give a rats A S S about the OL issues scheme with what you have! As a Fins fan it makes me sick to watch the Jets who don't have a rightside to their OL either to speak of and a rookie spread QB with IMO inferior D talent ahead at the Midway point!

One must have gonads in sports and the owner, and this woman do not.

Yes, Martin is sensitive.

Yes, Anyone with self respect will handle things differently.

But None of this is Martin's Fault. (You can't Blame the victim)

Yes, You can Prank all you want. Except when the person who is getting pranked says they have had enough. Then it is no longer pranking but Bullying.

I have lived by one rule my whole life. Treat others how you like to be treated. So even as Captain of many teams I never abused on the scrubs. Yes, you make them do things for you. But pulling pranks is asking for someone to whoop your ass. At least where I am from. People knew not to prank with Dashi cause that would be the easiest way to catch 2 black eyes.

Leaders don't pull pranks it is detrimental into having other people follow you if you are constantly making them the ass of jokes. A leaders job is to give false hope. Make everyone feel better than what they really are.

Which brings me to my point. Incognito is a Prick who found his punk and rode him til he breaks.

I don't care if Incognito outweighs Dashi by almost 100lbs. He would know after the 2nd time Dashi isn't one to F' with. First time he will get a warning that I don't play games. Second time I will wait til he turns around and catch him with my helmet a couple times on his brick head.

But again that is how I was raised. Treat everyone with Respect but Mama didn't raise no Punk. If they don't want to give you respect you make them respect you.

Now Martin was raised a Punk like most kids these days. He probably played Soccer growing up. Was taught that fighting is bad even if you are only fighting for self defense. Use a gun not your fist. That is how we are raising our kids.

I was raised to use my brain but to understand that dumb people don't listen to words they listen to fist. Some people need to be taught that they aren't as bad as they think they are.

Reason Dashi wants to meet up with the resident Idiot whenever he wants. To beat some sense into him. Since we all know he doesn't comprehend words. Maybe a good old fashioned slobber knocker will do it.

P.S.- I'll be up in central FL for thanksgiving visiting Family. I can make the 1 Hour drive to Daytona to end you if you want.

Outside of the haters and trolls, I don't understand people giving up on Tannehill. He's been in the league year & a half.
Let's give him to the end of the season, shall we?

Ireland, Philbin, Sherman and Coyle? Nope, not even close

NICE TO SEE THAT DASHI,THE BE=IGGEST DONKEY OF THEM ALL........

I ASK DASHI ,THE DONKEY......

WHAT HAPPENED TO ALL YOUR PREDICATIONS . DONKEY ?????????????????

ounds like the coaching staff is finally loosing the locker room. Imagine that! Seen it coming at the beginning of the loosing steak that's not going to end. These clowns have won there last game this year. I think we have jumped in the same sinking ship as Tampa . Overpaid players and horrible coaches, another long year!

John,

I'm going to sit on the "Other Side" of the fence on this one.

I think this will serve to unify the team. I think they will naturally sense that they are on the verge of coming off the rails.

So, if for no other reason than self preservation, I see this as being a GIGANTIC unifying factor.

All the joking and bullshyt aside, Martin deserted the team at the worst possible moment. These guys are paid to be professionals and Martin just proved he's anything but.

Philbin and **THE TEAM** won't lose any sleep over Martin. They realize that the guy apparently just doesn't have what it takes to survive in the NFL.

Can you imagine Dick Butkiss, Walter Payton or Larry Csonka quitting on their teams because of a practical joke?

Martin was/is weak physically and now he's proven that he's weak mentally as well. It would one thing if this were just a pwersonal issue, but he has mucho obligations to a PROFESSIONAL Football Team and he's let THEM down.

I think this proves to be the wake up call. Philbin won't lose the locker room and the guys aren't going to curl up and quit like Martin. On the contrary, I bet they come out and play inspired football DESPITE Martin and "Jelly Roll" issues. I'll bet that Clabo even plays more inspired ball.

And for THAT....and THAT ALONE........I Thank Jonathon "Jelly Roll" Martin!!!!

THE GARAGE MANAGER................

THE PASTRAMI COACH ....................

THE 160 MILLION WR ???????????????????

ODINESE.......

HAVE SOME SHAME
HAVE SOME DIGNITY...........

HOW LONG WE R GOING TO READ YOUR CRAP ABOUT THIS MEATBALL TEAM ??????????

What ever happened to Dallas Thomas ?

DASHI WAS TELLING US WE WOULD BE IN THE PLAYOFFS BY NOVEMBER .......

NO SHAME
NO DIGNITY

MAR,

YOU MEEAN THE BUST ,D.THOMAS ?

Tonight is a must win game.

This can beat Cincy.

All I have to say is that when the SFLA Media wants to get you they can be some vindictive SOBs.

It was just 2 weeks ago a certain Fluffy Journalist said the Gloves are Off. And boy are they off.

Dashi expects this team to respond well tonight and play a complete game. All 4 qtrs.

L.Miller should see at least 20 carries this game. Making it his first 100yd game as a Pro. He should already have a couple but they have been limiting his carries.

Wallace just needs to shut up and catch the Ball. Nobody is going to throw you the ball when you drop half the passes thrown at you and you never show any fight for the ball.

Can't wait to see R.Matthews get some targets. Just hate that Gibson got hurt. But Matthews will prove he belongs the rest of the season. He is the only WR the fins have that always fights for the ball.

On the O-line they will have everyone watching. This offense goes as far as they take us. When they do their job they Skill Position players look great. When they block like chit everyone else looks bad.

The fins are still in it. But another loss can cause mass hysteria. We all know how it looks in here after a loss. Just expect that everywhere else. With the Sport writers down here doing what they do best. Hate!! Hate!! Hate!! Hate!!

Listen, man, we CAN win this Game.

Regardless of all our warts on offense/defense, circus atmsophere and ultimate dissapointment.

Love primetime football in South Florida. Looking farward to a beer and my dolphins.

However said Garner can't play outside ??? Have you been watching our games friend ? Neither can Clabo. Give Garner the chance. At least rotate them or bring one in fresh in the 4th quarter when Clabo normal goes from terrible to the worst RT in the league.

The RT, should have a TE helping out all day, Thill would at least be able to dump off to them after the inital block on the odd play/

I feel good.

Just to be clear, Jeff Ireland is NOT panicking. What happened is, he slipped and spilled a Diet Coke on his pants. It was not anything else.

Dashi/odin

I said it last night and will repeat! You can call it bullying all you want but to me bullying is when things take a physical turn! I grew up Old School as well with a Latin Father who the one time I came home after taking a beating to complain sent me back out to get some more explaining that that's the only way you get any respect in the concrete jungle, I knew better than to come home crying about anything! This isn't the case here!NOT EVEN CLOSE!!!!

Why didn't the 6'6"/315 Pd. Martin tell Cogs to solve it outside or on the practice field? All this bullying B.S. about him or his mental health which the Government and their legal (drug dealing) pharmaceutical Companies want us to believe one in 3 of us suffer from! Bullying to me is someone intentionally intimidating you with force again just not the case!

They didn't tape his butt cheeks together or beat him with soap balled up in their towels! This is something a grown man deals with in another way. I get what your saying Dashi but don't see why he didn't handle it by inviting Cogs outside for a minute or nipping it in Training Camp when fights are invited on the field, JMO!

Yes we can win this game. WE could in theory be 5-2, but with this regime we will never win the big games against top tier opponents.

Let Philbin Go home.

Shame?

When has Dashi given you permission to speak to him again? Fool!!

Donkey Taint Licker!! We are not friends, We are not acquaintance. Heck we aren't even enemies. You are nonexistent to Dashi. So do me a favor and put your hand on the screen whenever you see my name. I don't even want you to see what I type.

Oh yeah don't even respond. Cause Dashi doesn't want to hear it.

You get the point!! Right, you fool!!

ALoco is back with a vengance...

Oh the horror...

IRELAND AND HIS PASTRAMI HC ..........

fin4life | October 31, 2013 at 05:44 PM

Undrstood. JT did kill it hat year (and that Chicago game) as a rover. D. Jordan would be good at it too, although hasn't he been used (or proposed to be by Coyle) in a roving position this year? I thought their package on D ("Super rush" pkg.?)was going to employ a somewhat similar approach. On that note, I wish we would use this kid more. Wake is still being limited in his snap counts by coaching, so let's get the kid in the game progressively more.

IT'S SAD TO SEE OUR EESTEM DONKEY DASHI STILL WRITING HIS FAMOUS CRAP ABOUT DUMB TEAM LED BY A GARAGE MANAGER AND PASTRAMI HC .......

My BIG roll of the dice came with believing everything I was reading about the Off-Season work ethic of Martin (he was my surprise player) and debated with you plenty about it cause you didn't trust it and your not only right but now the guys gone AWOL in the make-or-break game of this Yr. I wanted to be wrong about Martin BIG TIME!

How nice it would've been getting our Left Tackle for the next 10 years with a 2nd round pick! A nice feather for Jeffy's cap. Instead, another acorn that failed to take root.

On Philbin's locker room, I see this as being a unifying factor. Otherwise, think about EVERYBODY's options. They **COULD** roll over and pack it in, but I don't see it. These youngsters are too competitive for that. I believe they'll come out and try to shut up all their detractors by **TRYING** to play their football of the year.

It could go either way, but I'm betting on the later.

stillhardcoredolphinsfan | October 31, 2013 at 06:29 PM

Was the point I was making, I get the apprehension at referring to the Saban ERA as positive in anyway but I did like the way he mixed-n-matched the D scheme's using his personnel.

Lets see oour RT is MIA, our left tackle is known for crazy partying and couldn’t even dress for his last team, our center has been subpoenaed and Incognito tried to fight our offensive coordinator this week.

Awesome lets play some football.

This team is imploding and don't think for a second Irefiend isn't gonna feel the true force of this after this season...personally its time to clean HOUSE for all involved in the front office.....and Philbin better realize that friendship with Sherman does not equal success and man up to hand this man his walking papers if things continue to get worse...and theres no sign that hes going to get better...just sayin!!!!

F4L,

LMAO, Agreed. That is how I was raised. Respect is everything.

But some people aren't raised that way.

I believe J.Martin spoke with Incognito. But Incognito doesn't understand words.

You don't have to beat someone up everyday for it to be bullying. Verbal bullying is big nowadays. I would've got suspended even more in school with these new rules. What we called rank sessions are now banned. Kids can no longer get in a circle and make fun of each other. You don't want to hurt another persons feelings.

I believe Incognito found his punk. And every good bully will ride a punk until he breaks. That is what happened.

Everyone on the blog is saying that Incognito is the source of the practical joke on Martin. Where and what story does this info' get attributed to? One blogger had pounce as the bad guy. All the stories I read say that the O-Line got up and left the table when martin sat down. To me, that is more than 1 guy, if true. Not a real good practical joke to play on a guy/teammate/supposed friend that was obviously one of the weak links. As a leader (and a man) you should be trying to pull that guy up to your level. I did read that Martin had the nickname "Big Weirdo". If I was a teammate and heard it, I would have lit into the guy that came up with it.

It could go either way, but I'm betting on the later.

odinseye | October 31, 2013 at 06:35 PM

I don't believe they come out and simply roll over either (although would you believe local sports radio on the Dolphins Network believes we will do just that?) I'm speaking to team Moral/Leadership when it gets tight tonight how will it go with these guys (Cogs is one of them and he blasted away at Sherman all week on local radio as well which gets little mention here)

Joe Rose on 560 went as far as to say he hopes they lose by 40 tonight with empty stadiums forcing Boss Ross's hand with Ireland (NEVER thought I'd here a local sports homer blast a Coach or GM like that) IMO without parroting I believe this team has enough talent to be 5-2 right now with relative ease and at whose feet do you place the blame?? How many times are we going to start the next Yr. talk in Nov. throwing up mock drafts?? At what point is enough, enough??

curiously, how would cutting Martin help this team? only positive is he won't freak out anymore but he isn't a cancer in the lockeroomc...he's just a puss

====================

I don't know that it would help the team, Martin appears to be the next best tackle we have.

Cutting him would send a message and provided Philbin hasn't already lost the locker room, it's a message I would like to send to my my team.

If you're that soft, that temperamental, you're NOT the kind of guy we want to have to count on. Ultimately, football is a business and Martin's actions are bad for business. That's not the kind of guy I want protecting my Franchise QB and it's not the kind of guy I want to give Millions of dollars too.

I do feel a certain amount of compassion for anyone that's suffering psychologically. But as an NFL Head Coach, my team has to take priority. Maybe it was a bad JOKE, but it WAS a JOKE for Christ's Sake. Martin has decided to let his team down and by proxy, he's endangering a bunch of peoples(GM's, Coaches, Players, etc, etc)careers.

So I don't know how it helps the team. Hopefully it serves as a unifying wake up call. In the long run, it sends the right message, that the team comes first. Especially when we're talking so-called professionals with million dollars contracts. Obligations to your Coaches and Teammates. And ULTIMATELY, literally, if you can't take a joke.............?

C'Mon Man!!!!

andy dalton ,,,,,,,,

A REAL QB ...............

Ireland can no longer be defended or excused from the current mess that is the Dolphins. His past few draft classes have been down right horrid and his free agent adds along with trades have had mix reviews, most being negative. Players brought in here arnt used to the best of their skill set and end up being cut or traded out of the organization. When does the GM become the one sent packing. How this man got a contract extension is beyond me.

Another observation which we all see. We have a playmaker in Jordan who when hes on the field is always making plays but still warms the bench more than not. What will it take for this organization to takeoff the training wheels and diapers and let the young guys play. Msg to Ross. You will never win anything with Jeffy at the helm. Oh wait. You will win most acorns collected

If I was a teammate and heard it, I would have lit into the guy that came up with it.

stillhardcoredolphinsfan | October 31, 2013 at 06:43 PM

I've been listening to Local Sports radio all day and all they did was discuss this back-n-forth. The consensus is they all played some sort of prank and laughed at him were he took his tray and slammed it to the ground leaving the team facility without saying a word (From an un-named inside source) The speculation is he's been very upset since McKinnie took his place and this is the real root of the issue because he doesn't feel he deserves to have been moved again this is the speculation from people with more info. than any of us and it makes more sense than alot of the other theories bounced around.

Odin,

Agreed Martin let the team down and as a professional, is inexcusable. He should be cut and good chance he will. now, let's look at the flip-side of the coin. The moron that started on his case is the cancer. His teammates that allowed it are not much better. Where is the leader? Where is the guy to come down hard on the bully? That's the player I'm rooting for. Not the jackoff that is hurting his team by starting the bullsh.t. See my post @ 6:43 PM.

Cutting him would send a message and provided Philbin hasn't already lost the locker room, it's a message I would like to send to my my team.

If you're that soft, that temperamental, you're NOT the kind of guy we want to have to count on. Ultimately, football is a business and Martin's actions are bad for business.
