Miami vs. Buffalo: Keys to the game

The Dolphins return to the football field on Sunday against the Buffalo Bill, The Miami Herald has learned.

These are the keys to the game:

When the Dolphins pass the football: The Dolphins have two goals when they throw the ball: Complete the pass. Keep quarterback Ryan Tannehill from getting hit. It’s debatable which of the two is more important. The Dolphins are allowing more sacks per game than any other NFL team and as the offensive line is unchanged from the previous five games, even coming off a bye week, there is little reason to believe Tannehill won’t get hit this game as he has others. Led by Mario Williams, who is third in the NFL with eight sacks, the Bills are ninth overall in sacks per pass play. The Dolphins will be looking to get some easy completions by running more wide receiver screens than usual and this should offer one way to keep Tannehill from getting hit while still completing passes. ADVANTAGE: Even.

When the Dolphins run the football: Lamar Miller was successful against the Bills the last time he played against them, as he averaged 7.3 yards per carry on 10 carries. But the Miami running game has been a major disappointment so far this season to the point fans are calling for trades for a running back or along the offensive line. The Dolphins might be wise to take a page out of the Buffalo game plan and simply not give up on the running game so easily. The Bills, you see, are
not very good at stopping the run. They rank 28th in the NFL in that department. It must be noted, however, that much of that damage came the first three weeks of the season when New England and New York bulldozed the Bills up front. ADVANTAGE: Even.

When the Bills run the football:  The Bills are third in the NFL in rushing yards per game and that because they run the ball well and often. C.J. Spiller hasn’t been the weapon he was last year but he still is averaging a healthy 4.2 yards per rush while Fred Jackson is at 4.6 yards per pop. The Bills had six runs of 10 yards or more against Baltimore’s solid defense three weeks ago and had another five runs over 10 yards last week against Cincinnati. The Dolphins are hopeful middle linebacker Dannell Ellerbe will be available to them for this game but the fact his status is uncertain and he’s nursing a shoulder injury is troubling because he is the team’s best run-defending linebacker. The Dolphins don’t like sinking the safety into the tackle box to stop the run but this might be a game that calls for exactly that move. ADVANTAGE: Buffalo

When the Bills pass the football: QB Thad Lewis, a South Florida native and Hialeah-Miami Lakes High alumnus, returns to his hometown as a little known and mostly untried professional quarterback. Lewis is playing because rookie E.J. Manuel is out for Buffalo but he also is nursing a foot injury. The Bills weren’t a passing team even with their starting quarterback and now are less so but they still pose a threat deep with rookie Marquise Goodwin, have a proven if also enigmatic veteran in Stevie Johnson and make good use of both C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson out of the backfield. The Bills do struggle to protect the QB, however. They are 27th in the NFL in sacks per pass play. The Dolphins are getting healthier up front with Paul Soliai and Cameron Wake both nearing 100 percent. Pass pressure has fallen the last couple of weeks so the Dolphins are hoping for a rebound. ADVANTAGE: Miami.

Special teams: Brandon Fields is the NFL’s leading punter and a weapon in flipping the field in Miami’s favor. The Bills punter is Brian Moorman and he’s averaging a solid 42 net yards per punt but the Bills are lucky to have him because their plan coming out of camp was having Shawn Powell do the job – until Cleveland had 179 yards and a touchdown in return yards. That one went bad. This one went right: The Bills signed former Dolphins kicker Dan Carpenter and he’s been excellent in that he’s made 12 of 13 kicks, including all three of his attempts of 50 yards or more. Leodis McKelvin, who returned a punt for a touchdown against Miami last season, is back in the punt return role after missing time with an injury.  He has only four returns and is averaging only 9.5 yards per, but he is dangerous. Miami’s Marcus Thigpen also had a TD return against the Bills last season. ADVANTAGE: Even. Coaching: Former Dolphins reserve offensive lineman Doug Marrone is instilling a solid culture in Buffalo. The team seems more disciplined than in the past and has been especially improved on defense where the secondary has played well despite injuries, veteran Mario Williams is having a solid season and linebacker Kiko Alonso is a rookie of the year candidate. The Dolphins have issues to address – no running game, no ability to protect the quarterback -- and coaches have had a week to get it right. The tweaks and adjustments the staff has made to address the issues will be interesting to see. ADVANTAGE: Even.

Intangibles: The Dolphins are coming off a bye. They’ve had two weeks to prepare for this game and are reasonably healthy. Quarterback Thad Lewis, meanwhile, is returning to his home town as an
unexpected starter for Buffalo – a big moment for him. OVERALL ADVANTAGE: Miami.

THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA WERE NOT USED TO JUDGE CITIES

Looki, ETF is writing away.

Andrew luck has 21 nits in 22 games and Eli has 30 in his last 22, what's the point of tannehil 's 18?

Yeah, that much is true, Although the episode is not in my memory, my Mother told me about it, of when we came in 1950 to vacation in Miami, and the bus driver stopped the bus and came to us, and motioned my Mother and I to come to the front of the Bus. We ? at that Time. That much is true, certainly.

Treach = ANOTHER WASTED SEASON..eh?

I see ETF was writing as himself and one of his 9 alter egos Cadillac. We know at least one person enjoyed it.

Armando has had this blog for years now and the best he can do after all this time is about 8 regulars and a few lonely sad sacks like Ape Tamer.

Archie @ 7:09

Some loser stole my CadillacDeVille handle a year ago so I let him have it.

I've posted under no handle other than ETF since I invented it in response to the fraud being perpetrated on all of you in free agency.

Since I never fell for it then I was not a victim of the fraud.

How sad = Archie = Ape Tamer = Rob

Gf and I are supposed to be going to a halloween party.
She has been getting ready for 90 minutes and is still naked.
I'm starving.

My costume: my Chad Henne jersey and some black grease paint under each eye.

Last time you said it was 2 years ago. The time before you said 3 months ago. Your story always changes, but we know.

You still have your one friend here though.

If ETF gets banned blog hits will go down another 30%.

I hate to sa it....

but Manziel is LIGHT YEARS ahead or wr Tanne @ the same point in their careers...

Manziel is Wilson ion steroids....WIN or LOSE....

If his antics make him drop...we got to pull the trigger...its just the natural progression of things....

a QB with instincts.....

We are about to find out about Tanny shortly. The fact that there is debate about about him is telling me there is still plenty of doubt about him.
I think he has talent.
Does he have enough to be a top 10 quarterback? maybe.
Lets see how he responds against the BILLS. If he looks assured and in control and takes the game on then we have something. If we get a repeat of the Ravens game, then this may be a Chad Henne repeat.
Nevertheless the pick at 8 was the correct pick at the time and the major error I see Ireland has made this last draft was not re signing BUSH.Bad bad error...I don't think Miller or Thomas are anywhere near the quality required at this stage and Thomas is in year what 3 ?????
So....we need 2 right sided O lineman and 2 new running backs plus possibly a blocking TE and an upgrade at one safety position thus far....ok...thats 6 new draft picks...we can get all this cleaned up if it doesnt improve....but we may have to wait another year for our breakthrough....Sherman needs to get a bit creative too.Very basic and predictable playcalling.....Henning???????

Make Tanne earn his job..VS...handing it to him every year....

BigAlfy,
If we use 6 draft picks on those positions then we will have to use acorns to replace the 15 departing free agents we have.

Looks like Manziel gets the loss....

dude is pissed....just what I want to see out of a player on he losing side of the game....

Can anyone remember the last time Kris was right about a QB?

Not easy to write on this Blog, because, many times, there are no arguments to write about.

I will proceed now to watch Max Schercher kick the asss of the Boston Red Sox.

Dr Canosa are you treating ETF? Doc wats your opinion on Wallace mental health?

oh, Mike's mental health is fine, he's just educationally deprived.

This Country, along with the Others, have a LONNNNG way to Go.

What do you mean by that has Mike learned the playbook yet because IMO up to this point Gibson has been more valuable to the team.

Let me turn on my Internet TV.

If Manziel or Bridgewater come to the phins they will suck.

suck.

ETF may be Dashi.

Is there a point to this blog?

@ 7:39...

I don't understand how expressing that I like the way a QB plays makes me wrong...

and unlike you...I don't wait for the game to be decided to FLIP-FLOP my opinion...and then write about HISTORY....my post are about the FUTURE,,,and I stick by them with MY NAME...not 1001 others....like...i don't know....say DAYTONA.....or FIRE ROSS...whate ever name you will chose next...

Unlike you "nope"....i can handle critisism of my opinions...under ONE name...

soooooooooo....

have @ it....

KrisOcrit,

You harped and hounded for YEARS that we have to take a chance on a first round QB. Take a chance you said. Put yourself in a position to get a player you said. Pick SOMEONE in the first round you said. Time and again.

Yet as soon as we FINALLY do it with Tannehill, you were sour grapes on the idea. Which was your own idea. How is that not a Flip Flop?

Whoever it is that always says you are the dumbest blogger here, he is right.

If the Noles keep it up it will set up a majorly hyped game against the Canes.

CORRECTION Daytona @ 8:38....

I said 1st RD talent....there is a difference....

Tanne was NOT that guy IMO...even tho...he has obvious talent...I don't think he is that 1st rd...sure fire....and even tho you like to attach hypocryte to my name (very corny)...by YOUR OWN ADMISSION...I have been consistent in my critisism of Tanne....

whaaaaaatttttt.....

lol....

your too funny Dattona.....

Daytona...lol....

Kris, you really are delusional. Chuckling that fact away won't change a thing.

Daytona....lol....

you should make your next NEW SCREEN NAME....

blog joke....

That would be the most apporiate and accurate name you could contrive to date...

and yes...I chuckle @ you...because you turned yourself into a JOKE quite some time ago....

ny way Daytona (joke)...

Its been fun....but I am on my way out...only have 2 more weekends in Missouri...not gonna waste this one talking to you....

Why don't you bring Oscar and Aloco out...you haven't used the latter in a little while....you and you....always have a good conversation....should make your night go by faster.....

.I don't think he is that 1st rd...sure fire....

Posted by: Kris | October 19, 2013 at 09:24 PM

More evidence of this guy's sheer idiocy. Nobody ever knows who is sure fire. How many 1st round QB's have been busts despite all the scouting by all the experts? Go back to Ryan Leaf. Or more recently Gabbert and Locker and Ponder and Sanchez all being drafted way too high. Sure fire??? Nope clown. That is not what you said in the day. You said take a chance, and we did.

2 weekends in Missouri. Hahaha, wow that sounds special. Might be the only place on earth he can feel smart, besides Arkansas.

Tannehill is more like a 6th rd project than a 1st rd pk. Thanks Ireland.

oscar my son, tell us again how scoring points could be the key to the game LMAO!

Tannehill wll never be as good as Manziel.

Manziel can't control his addictions. He will be the next Hollywood QB like Sanchez. Manziel is a bust waiting to happen.

I understand why some are so high on Manziel and he showed some toughness today when he was absolutely pancaked by 2 DL injuring his shoulder leaving then returning and nearly pulling out the win. I get it attitude aside there seems to be something to him. I'm just not sure watching his arm strength if his style will translate when the DB's will have the speed to jump those passes he tosses in the flat that hang a bit.

The kid I'm most impressed with (and the best looking Fr. QB I can remember in sometime) is Jameis Winston. Can make absolutely every throw! Is leading essentially the same bunch EJ Manuel had but has them on a different level. The beating he's putting on teams and blowout win over a tough #3 Clemson tonight has me thinking we could be looking at a very special future NFL STAR! Scary thing is this kid should only get better plays like a Seasoned Vet already and shows tons of the leadership qualities that allude a physically similar player like Cam Newton.

I see some hit and miss with the QB's leading the 2014 draft charge but if Tanne fails, I'll tell you all who I'd mortgage the house for in 2015!

JAMEIS WINSTON IS THE REAL DEAL!!!!

By the way while everyone will look to Teddy Bridgewater and Johnny Football I'll have my eye on Marcus Mariota if he were to fall into RD-3.

Given one hell of an upset Sat. the Canes will find themselves tomorow ranked around 6. Don't believe they're that good yet and hope to give FSU and Winston a better game than the one Clemson gave tonight. I believe Oregon, Ohio St., FSU and Alabama (only because Saban will scheme his team better than the others to play with anybody) are the ELITE and the 4 are so good it's a shame 2 will be left out of the Nat'l Champ. game.

IF I OFFENDED SOME OF YOU WITH MY OPINION I DO APOLOGIZE FOR THAT BUT THAT IS MY OPINION AND MY RIGHT TO EXPRESS IT. DOES IT MAKE IT CORRECT? NO BUT THAT IS THE PURPOSE OF DEBATE BECAUSE MAYBE YOU CAN SEE ANOTHER POINT OF VIEW IS CORRECT OR NOT. AS FOR YOU MR. ANSPARGER!! I WOULD NOT CARE IF YOU WERE 100 YEARS OLD THAT DOES NOT MAKE YOU OR ME AN AUTHORITY ON WHAT WE THINK IS RACIST. IT'S SIMPLY OUR DIFFERENT POINT OF VIEWS. AND FOR YOUR INFORMATION I'VE BEEN A DOLPHIN FAN SINCE 1969 AND EVEN WHEN OUR PLAYERS WERE NOT 90% BLACK I WAS AND WILL ALWAYS BE FAN REGARDLESS OF MY OPINION. THERE IS A SEGMENT OF THE POPULATION IN MIAMI THAT HATES THE DOLPHINS BECAUSE THEY FEEL THE SAME WAY.I CHOOSE TO SUPPORT DESPITE MY PERSONAL FEELINGS. AS FOR ME WRITING IN ALL CAPS!! AGAIN I CHOOSE TO AND YOU CANNOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT EXCEPT MOVE ON OR STFU BECAUSE IT'S MY RIGHT. I WILL AGREE WITH YOU ON ONE THING. I LOVE MY FINS DESPITE WHAT I SEE THAT YOU DON'T. GO FINS! WIN THIS ONE FOR THE OLD MEN!!

I've read over all these posts. About 90% of them are ridiculous. It doesn't matter what color you are or what you're a fan of. What matters is what type of PERSON you are. Judging from these posts, 90% of you are the Ridiculous Types. I'm seriously sorry if this offends, but.......just look back at what you post/posted-LOL. Again, the proofs in the pudding. I don't have to name, names either, you know who you are.

I could see these types of posts on a Philly Blog, The Giants, Pittsburgh and so on. But this team is 3-2 and wasn't expected to win more than one up to this point.

A further point to the ridiculous, you SEE the O-Line giving up sacks at a record pace, but you......APPARENTLY**......cannot fathom how that affects various players and aspects of the TEAM's performance.

How can you judge Tannehill or Wallace with this Line? My favorite is how Tannehill's "Pocket Presence" or "Pocket Awareness" is routinely criticized. Yet the O-Line assembles a viable pocket on "LESS than a 3rd" of their attempts. RIDICULOUS(not just the o-line. You KNOW who you are-LOL).

I LMAO at the poster above trying to draw comparisons between Sherman and Henning. In light of how thoroughly our O-Line affects these types of things-Ridiculous.

I'm not a Big Sherman Fan. Period. Having said that, I have noticed some times when things were clicking and Sherman was able to call the plays he wanted, he did a pretty good job. Back to the ridiculous, the O-Line is obviously affecting the play calls and I would go as far as to say their even affecting the Game Plans. And NOT in a good way. I'm not a big Sherman Fan, but it's obviously RIDICULOUS to strip the man naked, tie one arm behind his back and judge how he performs.

Ultimately, I have a guess at how the Staff addressed the O-Line. I believe they let them rest up and get healthy. Then they simplified the blocking schemes as much as they could. This means, they probably stripped down the playbook as well.

Ireland had too many holes to fill. He stretched it as much as he could and placed his bets: All In! The O-Line was the sucker bet, the proverbial straw. All that's fine by me, I can live with it......THIS YEAR. It is, after all, only Year Two of the Philbin/Ireland collaboration. Once you get through the RIDICULOUSNESS, you'll realize that by tonight we'll be 4-2 and ready for a Showdown with our Top Division Rivals.

How RIDICULOUS is it, that in year Two of the Rebuild, we're battling for First Place in the Division......?

(About 90% of you guys got me: ROTFLMFAO!)

ValHalla!!!!

Odin, just stfu, as an Ireland supporter, you have no credibility whatsoever. The Dolphins have as many holes to fill as they do because Ireland is an incompetent moron. Year two of the rebuild lmao. It only takes two years to build a team in this era...and this is Ireland's second five year plan. His first one failed miserably, and he's repeating the same exact mistakes. Ireland is incompetent as a GM, and anyone who supports him is incompetent as an observer. The Dolphins are playing like a 1-4 team. Their free agent binge has produced less than stellar results. Ireland's latest draft produced nothing remarkable, as per usual. This is why the team has "holes" to fill, Ireland drafts poorly. They have the worst O-line in football, and quite possibly in team history. Any GM who was fit to see Lamar Miller as a replacement for Reggie Bush is unfit to hold a GM's position. It's almost that simple. The Dolphins will never make the playoffs with Ireland as GM. Ireland's poor drafts will burn this team in the years ahead as well, same as Wannstedts. This is how the Dolphins became a 1-15 team. The Patriots sweep the Dolphins this year too...seriously get real. I think your head first dive into the Dolphins' locker room laundry bin has clouded your judgement. I could see how the stench that you enjoy might make a fan delusional.

Odin has fantasized about stripping Mike Sherman naked. He mentioned the idea in his post. He had obviously gotten the image in his mind...wants us to do the same.

No thanks.

Keep your gay fantasies out of this blog.

Thanx

Hoping the Phins lose today...the outrage in here would be roflmao...priceless.

If Ryan Tannereach has a three int day and the Phins lose I'll buy the whole town drinks. Bills front seven is good. Phins O-Line is high school quality, same as the team's uniforms. Gay logo Phins have little to gain today, everything to lose. Lose today and 3-0 becomes 3-4 next week...just like that. A month of losing for this loser franchise and its dumbo owner. Thank you Sir Ross for your contributions to the arts and education. Still most of us would prefer that you use your ears and fly away...for good...and take the redheaded step child with you.

I salute Steve Ross and jeffy Ireland for doing their best to help this team. Keep up the good work fellas GO TEAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!

E

The Bills will stampede the fish eh?

First- Armando/Herald-sloppy article-formatted poorly and"The Herald has learned" We've known this for months. Do better, please.

Second-Wallace needs to catch balls, no matter who throws. That's his job. A speed receiver needs to do this or no more than a potential track star. He is doing his job roger than that.

No way Miami loses. This is a warm up for a far more challenging game next week with New England.

oavery,

We don't match up well with Buffalo. We have a horrible oline and they have a top dline. They can run, we can't. Look for them to run a lot, eat up the clock and keep it a close game.

Also if we can't stop the sacks it won't be long before Tanne is on IR.

So Odin....

when DO we get to judge the Tanne....when EVERYTHING is perfect?

When every team member is a PRO BOWLER....

When Ireland is in year 8 of his rebuild....

As always...I respect your opinion....but i don't apperciate you disrespecting (90% Your stat...not mine) of other people's opinion to make your point....

BTW Odin...who do you think helped pick....train...and sign off on this pathetic O-line....you guessed it....Ole Sherminator....and Philibin isn't without his guilt as well...they ALL horribly mis-judged the talent on the O-Line...along with the RB postion.....

Forget the 90%....because most likely 85% of that is on person....and that person is a douche....

but for the other 5%....we can handle our opinion being challenged...or even proved wrong.....

Its why i post to people...and not generalities.....

Kris, like most idiot bloggers here, has no vocabulary beyond douche. He is the constant HypoKrist in that he can't see he is guilty of everything he complains about in others.

He challenged me to debate him directly last night so then as soon as I point out how he Flip Flops with evidence every knows, he ran away.

HypoKrist doesn't post to people, like he says. He posts to the mirror. As soon as people show up to challenge him, he'll just chuckle and say he won't waste his time and then leave.
